Talking with a friend we discussed the possibilty of the series winding down to a close. As unbelieveable as it might sound, the series seems to be reaching some sort of climax. All the major pirates are in the Grand Line, the Straw Hats are at the halfway point for the Grand Line. So does anyone else see any other reasoning as to why this may be the beginning of the end, even though I wish One Piece could go on for years.
Beginning of the end?
-
-
Dude.
Were.not.even.on.the.second.half.of.the.Grand.Line.
O_O
Its not winding down at all. -
Seems like almost all the major players have been revealed. Only 2 Marine Admirals, 2 Shichibukai, and 2 Emperors left to be revealed. Luffy's crew seem to be getting completed too. I can't think of another profession that the straw-hats need right now besides a musician, though they can just invite someone with no specific profession.
However, a lot of old enemies are still around. Some of them appear to be very weak now to be able to pose a threat, like Morgan or Kuro, but some others might still have a significant role in future stories, I'm guessing Buggy the Clown is one of those people.
It's all up to Oda-sensei whether he wants to stretch the story or make it real short; make the straw-hats face the enemies one by one or face them all in one big brawl at the end.
-
I have to admit it's only a matter of time before I lose interest. Also, Spaceman-Spiff, if Oda decided to end the story right now, it would still be one of the longest running Manga's out there.
-
Well, I agree on the point made that most of the major players have been revealed. Oda just has lot's of loose-ends to tie up. I also think more focus on piracy in general should be made in the next few arcs.
-
I saw 200 more chapters, no way this will go on another 10 years, I mean, I wish it would, but I doubt it will.
Still, he takes so long to tell stories these days, have you gone back and looked at the first 100 chapters? The buggy stories, albida, the who Don Kreig thing, the whole thing with Ussop and the sick girl and Captain Kuro, the who Arlong thing! And the first part of the Grand Line! He could actually constuct a plot and a story without taking 2 years to tell it back then.

100 chapters = 2 years…..
-
i think of this as the 2nd part of one piece. long are the days of the strawhats going on random adventures and now the story will be focused on all the main characters of one piece i don't think there will be that many new characters introduced only the ones we know of already and the ones that have yet to show up like the other admirals and shichibukai. there is soooooooo much left in the story and since oda is a really good story teller he is going to tell it in a really good way so i'm expecting the 2nd part of one piece to be 500+ chapters.
-
They've got so many islands left, and there may be more past the Grand Line. Wait, there's the One Piece but still there may be more. Ah, you get me. I guess about 220 chapters more, seriously.
-
400 chapters more to go…... and that should be it......
-
Yeah, we still got many old enemies out there. Kuro was not shown in good health in the manga (just in the anime) but safe to say hes well and good, Morgan is out there somewhere, same with Buggy.
-
actually, I would think that 400 isn't enough…. at current arc rate....... just look at Water 7 and Enies Lobby.......
maybe 500 to 600 would end this whole story till the very end......
-
I kinda wish people would stop speculating when the end will happen, it makes me sad. Most of us don't want it to end but we talk about this crap making it seem like we do, we need to spend more time WITH the story instead of looking into its FUTURE of its ending.
-
OP ends when Oda wants to, as long as Oda doesn't rush into an ending Im happy, and I seriously doubt that would happen. I think OP will go on for quite some years more.
Btw, I think there are many threads like this already… -
It's time Oda picks up on one of the tangets he left open for the next arc. The ones I remember:
- Mermen/Fishmen island.. been foreshadowed a few times, starting from the Arlong arc. They'll need to beat Arlong's boss there.
- Doflamingo who is doing well on his island and his "new era" bravado. He needs to be stopped.
-
Aim for Kochikame Oda! Go 150 volumes!
-
I just want this series to end before I finish college.
-
I'm guessing we've got abother 500 to 600 chapters left. Remember, the Straw Hats haven't even entered the second half of the Grand Line yet.
The only reason people are thinking that the story will end soon now is because we're getting so many major plot developments after a few years and 2 huge mega arcs (Skypiea and CP9).
Believe me, this will be done just like Jaya. After the Blackbeard/Whitebeard/Ace stuff is settled for now, Oda will put the focus back on the Straw Hats and their adventures for a while, just like after Jaya.
-
jackvance: There's lots of other things than that, that needs to happen before One Piece can end. Zoro VS Mihawk with Zoro's victory, Blackbeard's crew VS Mugiwara, Whitebeard VS Shanks (current), Mermaid island, some of the Shichibukai needs to have been involved somehow, certain people re-appearing…
And tons of other things. What about Buggy? Alvida? And there's also the other Cipher Pol's even though we won't see anything of them. Also there's Elbaf, the Giant's Island. I BET 500+. SERIOUSLY. How 1337!
-
Even though there's things left, he might tight them up and explain about them all, though I guess it's why everyone speculates for hope he does. XD
I'd say OP will go on for another 300 chapters maybe? Possibly.
-
I wouldn't mind the series ending if it meant there was more important things happening every chapter instead of the long arcs.
-
I enjoy the long arcs, and I hope that OP will continue for years to come. As many of you have said, there are allot of islands left, big vs. fights, main plot holes to be filled, and I bet a bunch of characters to come. So I doubt the o' so stated "fact" that OP is nearing its end.
-
How long has it been going on for?
-
@jackvance:
- Doflamingo who is doing well on his island and his "new era" bravado. He needs to be stopped.
Either that storyline or something along the lines with Luffy's father. Which I have a feeling will be the official wrap up arc of One Piece since Oda could make it where the World Government is closing in on Dragon's homebase, which happens to be the last island on the Grand line where One Piece itself is hidden, sorry I can't spell the island name so I'm not even going to try.
-
What's the obssession with going back to Alvida or Buggy or Kuro?
I mean, if it's like Laboon where Luffy promised to go back to him or that girl that Usopp left…then fine. Maybe Oda has to resolve that. But as for the others?
We don't even know if the other Shichibukais, Admirals or Emperors are really part of the story that Oda is planning or just 'cannon fodder' to complete the list. For example...guys like Doflamingo or Bartholomew Kuma look like Shichibukai cannon-fodder to me because I can't associate them with anyone or any significant story right now. That "new world/era" bullshit that Doflamingo mentioned during the Shichibukai meeting seemed to me that he was just flapping his mouth and did not hold any significant bearing whatsoever to me. It just seemed as if it was part of his personality.
I mean, I don't think Oda has to go in-depth with every shichibukai/admiral or emperor. With guys like Mihawk, Whitebeard, Sengoku, etc...he may have to tie loose ends up since he started some sort of 'stories' with these guys, but Doflamingo, Kuma, Jinbei and the others? They probably will be seen later in the chapter, but I think they'll just be in passing. (Ie: participating in a grand war or whatever).
Ace, for instance...I don't see a great deal of significance in his character other than being "Luffy's, stronger, older brother" who will most likely be a sort of "measuring stick" for Luffy's abilities. Once Blackbeard is done with him (or once he beats Blackbeard, I don't know)...I don't see much of a point in focusing with his character...but he's treated as some sort of a 'major player' due to him being Luffy's bro and one of the stronger logias out there.
Some guy out there worked out a list on what should be resolved by the end of the story, but I forgot where it is.
-
One huge thing that hasn't been brought back yet is Johnny and Yosaku. Oda introduced them and had them around for some number of chapters, my guess is they will come back at the end or something, just to tie up loose ends with the SHs, since they are still Bounty Hunters, and even Bounty Hunters gain experience over time.
The big obsession with Buggy comes where we see the fact that Luffy has never honestly defeated Buggy. We first see him sent flying because Nami tied up his limbs, then, at Loguetown when they next meet, Buggy has CORNERED LUFFY AND IS ABOUT TO SLICE HIS HEAD OFF, but it meets an unfortunate end when Buggy's struck by lightning. That's the last time Luffy and Co. came in contact with Oda's favorite villain.

Johnny and Yosaku? You mean Zoro's old pals?
What sort of story advancement will Luffy "honestly" beating Buggy do? Buggy never came off as a major threat to me because he was portrayed as a joke from the start. Of course, Oda may do a complete 180 of this and bring back Buggy as a bad ass, but storywise, I don't see any significance in doing so. It's like saying that Oda should bring back Enel simply because Enel should have beaten Luffy if not for his rubber abilities.
With regard to Luffy and Buggy's encounter in Loguetown, I view it more as a "oh, so he's (Luffy) like Roger who was executed in Loguetown" rather than "oh shit, Buggy's gonna own Luffy!". I think it was done in order to show the similarity of Luffy and Roger…not to strengthen the 'Buggy > Luffy' scenario.
And I dunno whether I read it right or not...it seems to me that you guys are giving too much weight to Oda's claim that Buggy is his favorite villain. As one guy said it, "well, Piccolo was Toriyama's favorite villain but look what happened..."
-
Buggy fascinates because he's outside the scope of Luffy's attacks.
Much like a Logia, you can't just punch Buggy hard enough and he'll drop. He won't stay in one piece to be punched.
Hmm… what if One Piece is part of Buggy? XD

Last time I read Buggy vs. Luffy, even in 'bara-bara' form, Luffy could hurt Buggy. (ie: kick to the groin, kick to stomach). What do you mean by 'outside the scope of Luffy's attacks'?
Buggy is 'immune' to slicing attacks, IIRC. Luffy is immune to 'clobbering' attacks.

-
Oda said before that One Piece was suppose to be a 5 year series…....before moving on..... but almost 10 years down the road, and it doesn't seem like he will stop anytime soon....
-
No matter how long it goes, where it goes, what it does, I think its apparent that Oda knows where he wants to end up and what needs to happend to get there.
And that is something to be grateful of. After all we could be wandering aimlessly making stabs at story development like a dying animal with a broken leg like Naruto has for nearly two years now.
Theres a sense of structure apparent by this point. And thats always a good sign. -
Aimless stabs? What did you think Skypiea was?
Moving along, it seems at this point Oda is back on track with the main storylines, bar any suprises like Skypiea or Water6/Enies Lobby, the rest of the series shall be dealing with the MAIN storyline at hand. I'd say around 400-500 more chapters until the end (atleast I hope). Anything short of a perfect ending, and OP fails (u know I'm right).

Skypiea seemed more like a somewhat tedious detour, an interesting one as well, just…..low on the relevance scale considering its length.
Everything Naruto has done in "part two" just seems to be entirely based on seeing faces and not actual story structure. Everyone sits around Konoha, and get a couple missions where we really spend time watching old characters do nothing new, except they're older now, and we see akatsuki faces.
Its kind of like a bad cop show spin-off. -
Oh God, not another Naruto vs One Piece argument.

You can be sure the "New Age of Piracy" as well as mermaid island is going to have a huge significance later in the story, as well as Akainu's absolute justice. That's at least 3 members of the great powers who're sure to be developped further down the line.
-
There is no OP vs (a certain series) argument whatsoever. I talked STRICTLY about One Piece, I talked about hoping there are no other side attractions (Ex. Skypiea) so we can stick strictly to the main plot. I was just making a simple observation, he wrote the essay.
Anyways, there still much to do left in OP. We need to find about about the 2 remaining Shibuchai (spelling), BB, WB, Shanks and just too many plots to name. At Oda's current pace of storytelling, it seems that IMO, 400-500 will be all it takes for OP to reach a conclusion. What gets me most is the ending itself, I don't know what One Piece is and could it possibly live up to expectations? Easily one of the most anticipated manga endings of all time, A make or break as they say.
-
I wasn't talking about you in particular, but it'd be nice if we could avoid "Naruto suxx" posts popping up in completely unrelated topics. No matter how much some of you were traumatized by the Naruto fandom it's getting tired after a while.
-
I'm just using an example to compare to what people are exspressing worry about.
Like comparing Caligula to worries that Clinton when people start claiming its the apocalypse because he boinked his secretary.
I mean he could be boinking his sister. One Piece could be boinking its sister, but it just had one brief fling is all. Rather than all-night orgies and eventual assassination.
-
Skypiea seemed more like a somewhat tedious detour, an interesting one as well, just…..low on the relevance scale considering its length.
Concerning Skypiea, there seems to be more than given, because if I know Oda, he introduced Skypiea for a reason, and a very damn good one at that, but Gol D. Roger's comment could have done it, but I doubt to the extreme that that's the last we'll hear of Skypiea.
-
I think he'll wrap it up in no more than 25 volumes from now.
-
@Dr.:
That's 9.5 years, mister, not 7.
Yeah, sorry, typo. I was kinda staring at the 7 in 1997.
-
Well… I don't One Piece to drag on and on. I love the series, and this forum would be destroyed once it ended, but nothing is worse than a truly good series that just won't end. They lose alot of fans right before it concludes, and that's not at all the way for a Manga as good as this one to have an ending.
-
as long as oda finishes it before i have children/die, whichever comes first, i'm happy :/
didnt he say he planned for 1000 chapters? -
@bigpun:

didnt he say he planned for 1000 chapters?I don't believe so but I personally think that's his plan.
I don't think this is ending any time soon but I do believe we're about to enter a One Piece driven more by character we already know instead of totally new faces.
-
As long as One Piece keeps going, I'll be reading it. Even when I get older and have kids and all that…
I hope Oda never feels pressured to rush to the end of the story, he needs to go at his own pace, I love that he actually enjoys his work, so that its not so much like a chore or a job....
We may have reached a climax, but there are so many possibilities that are beyond me... Fishman Island is a start though ^^
-
I'd read it to the end…
... Every big series I got into before One Piece ended and made me feel sad... They ended on blank notes, so many unanswered questions and future plots left untold. Disappointment is large when you feel that its over too soon.
-
lol… i just hope once everything is finished, they leave it as is, and not add another season or continue the anime when the manga is already done etc...
-
If Oda wanted to he could drag it out for many years or start a spin off after they find one piece.
-
I just want this series to end before I finish college.
I hope you're still in high school then…
