Chapter 1131: Loki in the Underworld
-
Robin-with-bangs fans can sleep peacefully
-
-
Yamato's cover story starts to pick up steam. I always thought Yamato would team up with Tama at some point, and here it is. Could this team be more than temporary? Is anyone else joining this "crew"?
-
I like how Oda introduced an (likely) extremely powerful character without upsetting the previously known world order. He was out of the game... until now. And "Special" bounty? I feel it's because solely for his DF. It doesn't measure his true strength.
-
Loki has been imprisoned for 6 years? That's suspiciously the same period Shanks has been an Emperor...
-
Also, this chapter confirms the Tree is Adam, so one of my Elbaph predictions is already true. It's not a difficult prediction, but I was surprised by how many contested it...
-
The chapter implies Loki's true strength. Befriending the beasts of the Underworld as a child? Dodging Gear 4 while weakened, chained and blindfolded? Luffy got stronger in 2 weeks because of seastone, imagine 6 years! Loki's perception and resilience must be out of this world!
-
I have this theory that Boa Hancock uses her conqueror haki to charm people, which is why she's so overwhelming. Luffy taming the beasts, with even little hearts appearing? Feels like I'm in the right track.
-
Oda really fumbled proportions here. The Sunny is twice as long as a giant's height, and thrice as tall. While Goldberg could still carry it (since it's One Piece), the ship should be three times the size here. Also, look at the owl. Even downsized, how the crow carried it?
-
A small detail I didn't notice at first: This chapter confirms the face in Goldberg's shield is not just a painting! It moves! It's shown "sleeping" here.
-
We finally see Hajrudin and Stansen again! I really want to see them interacting with the crew! What is the "painter" Stansen talks about here? "Sunstones don't work when it's snowing". We may get a new mystery element in this arc.
-
ROBIN IS BACK!!!! Really, this is so nostalgic. I was never much of a fan of her new style post-timeskip, so this makes me so happy! It also helps my dastardly agenda, so bonus points there.
-
Chapter concludes with a small cliffhanger, but whatever is happening to Saul I'm sure he will be fine by the end of the arc. We will get Robin's reunion for sure!
The arc starts to pick up steam. The main conflict remains unknown, but there are enough clues to keep us hooked.

Loki wanting o be free by dawn makes me think he has a Harvey Birdman-esque ability where the sun powers him up.

If only she had her Alabasta clothing style tho
-
@King-Cannon It's also interesting that the "sunstones" don't work there, and Loki also says the sun does not reach the Underworld. Plus his blindfold. It's indeed as if he's powered by light.

Where's the cowboy hat and the other half-inch of her nose.

Loving the return of 'Classic Robin', pity it'll probably be an Elbaph only thing.
Luffy immediately throwing a Gear Fourth jab at Loki, just for badmouthing Shanks once, seems a little out of character. Feels like we're missing a couple panels where Luffy warns him first but Loki won't keep his mouth shut.

I really doubt it, this feels like it's going to stick.
-
It’s cool Oda found a reason for Robin’s hair to go back to it’s old style, but I also feel like the in universe reason was more of an excuse to allow Robin to go back to her old hair style given out of universe, the common fandom opinion seemed to miss the bangs?
I do not at all believe this was all planned for Robin to revert back to her old hair style in Elbaf when she learned Saul was alive when the hairstyle changed initially post time skip.
-
Honestly, I just want Franky's pompadour back.
-
So Shanks became Emperor 6 years ago after he defeated Loki?

Didn’t Oda admit he didn’t plan everything out early on? lol
In fact, in Straw Hat sketches, Robin wasn’t there period. Goes to show creativity can come at any moment.

I can't overstate how much I wanted that to happen. 15 years and I still never got even slightly over the fact that Robin's new look rather than evolving or at least adapting her visual identity, simply threw it away (and I never felt like it managed to build its own).
When I saw Brook talking about cutting her hair I had to stop a moment before going on just to check my hopes. Her face looked kind off in that panel (she looked more like Kiku), but I think now the hair is right the rest will fall into place the more Oda draws her.
And hopefully this is something that will stay until the end of the manga, since the end will probably take place only a few weeks or a few months from now. -
Very interesting to see daily scenes like characters having a haircut, even if it’s tied to the story. The older-half of the crew is really charismatic, I like how they decided to go on ahead and are just following through. I wish someone would comment or acknowledge Kuma, so we can better understand the situation he’s in. Maybe through Lilith, who already feels more like a crew member than a passenger, even having banter with Brook.
Loki is the mystery of this arc: for me he’s definitely the main villain, but he feels different from the usual format. I loved the little detail of him calling Luffy by the wrong name, as Luffy usually does with others. A sign he’s kind of a wild Liffy type himself (with delusions of grandeur).
I don’t see Luffy freeing him from his chains, and he seems like past the point of being fooled by Loki. So I wonder how will he get free? My gut feeling says Usopp will play a part in it, but I don’t see the god of trickery tricking the king of lies. Depends of who finds the key in the village next chapter. -
You know, kinda makes me feel old that we're at the point where we need Dressrosa recaps.
-
@Chams-0 said in Chapter 1131: Loki in the Underworld:

I'm betting on 3rd party. I'd love to see the Big Mom Pirates doing it, though maybe Kid fits better that role. Anyway, I feel a 3rd party taking Loki's offer is the best bet.

Back after two weeks for the Elbaph kick-off, let's go! The mythology and characters of the island continue to slowly build and offer possibilities of what could be coming without committing the story too hard in any one direction.
It's still way too soon to make any definitive statements about where Elbaph is going and who to expect to be a hero or a villain. The standard setup for a One Piece arc is for the Strawhats to arrive right as the final act of the locals' story gets in motion - the critical day of uprising for the resistance or the last stand against tyranny, or the trap they're about to blunder into - a story that would have ended in tragedy without the Strawhats' inclusion as the Deus ex Machina to what had been building. Usually the bad guys start with the upper hand, poised to win. If Loki is our villain, that is obviously not the case here. There's a suggestion of some kind of succession issue, but none of the friendly giants we've seen show much concern about it.
This mission to steal the key to Loki's shackles could be a last resort for his followers if Loki is to be an ally, but it could also have just finished being set up with all the contingencies and escape routes it needs to go fast and smooth if he's going to be freed to become the villain of the arc.
I enjoyed the casualness of Luffy and Loki's chat for most of the chapter, with Luffy climbing and reclining on the giants' leg. Loki has a lot going on that would obviously pique Luffy's interest despite moments of anger from both sides, so I think we're in for an interesting dynamic between the two would-be sun gods as the story plays out. Well, it makes sense there'd be some personality crossover if they're meant to embody the same deity, right? But I wonder if the Nika lore is different on and off Elbaph. Is the Sun God version of him mythologised by the giants distinct from the Warrior of Liberation one that's spread through prisons and slave camps in any key ways, as would happen to real religions as they spread? And will Luffy be able to please believers of both?
The reveal of the Treasure Tree Adam is exciting, following up on its mention from so many years ago. And in the reveal panel we can see the top of the tree, confirming there are no more tiers above what was shown in the last chapter, and (unfortunately) that it doesn't go all the way to the moon or anywhere else ridiculous.
It's been noted that the animals guarding the mountains are almost all species originally designed for the Strong World movie. But whether this is mean to hint at a connection or just be an Easter egg is anyone's guess. The outlier seems to be the wolf that shows up with the koma-animal flaming mane and tail commonly seen on Wano. Were the two nations connected in some way far in the past for crossbreeding to occur? Whatever the case, I really enjoyed Luffy instantly taming them.
I'm very curious about Loki's followers. Not because there seems to be anything unique about this particular group - it's obvious they've been around for a while - but for the idea that they're where humans who fight Elbaph and lose end up. So if they start talking about any new recruits...
I'm not the biggest fan of Luffy getting so aggro about Loki badmouthing Shanks. It's not the first time, but it's weird how it's a maturity barrier he still hasn't crossed. I'm not a believer in any kind of evil Shanks theory, but I can't help wondering if this extreme hero worship is setup for disillusionment and conflict when the two finally do cross paths.
The scene with the rest of the Elbaph Strawhats feels like setup for a gag rather than a real set piece. I think Goldberg is carrying the ship either to reunite the crew with it or to take it to show Hadjurdin (who looks like he's doing well for himself).
And we go out on Robin's haircut. She looks so much younger with the bangs back, and so happy to have that reunion on the horizon... only for Oda to float the idea of it all being stolen away at the last moment. Come on, that would be too cruel. I don't expect him to follow through, but it might result in just enough delay that the meeting comes at the end of the arc instead of the start. Such is the art of making drama and cliffhangers for a serialised story.
-
Also, spotted an interesting note on translation differences for this chapter:
-
Random thought: how do you think Luffy will call Hajrudin since there's no way he will learn such a complicated name?

I always assumed Robin and Franky got such dramatic overhauls in the timeskip so that casual readers being exposed to marketing wouldn't be entirely spoiled to them joining the crew if they were going through the story for the first time.
It's now 15 years later so that point is moot, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was a goal at the time.
Similarly, Franky's shoulders have gotten WAY smaller over time. They're still the big round things but they haven't been quite as ridiculous as they were for some time now.
-
Franky's arms are still the worst timeskip redesign

umm surprise break according to pewpiece, hope Oda is fine
Edit: already on Manga plus, next chapter on December 1st. rough.
-
Terrible timing, all the best to Oda.
I think having a date outlined for the next chapter is a good sign it's nothing too serious. Given the threeish week publication delay, that December 1st chapter is probably coming along already.

December already has two Jump Breaks, so we are looking at 2, maybe 3 chapters, before the years ends.
-
That's unfortunate for us but I hope Oda is alright and takes all the breaks he needs.
-
Hope Oda is alright, so this makes 2024 the year with the shortest amount of chapters since syndication I guess

@trollatron786 2023 is still worse, but yeah, th last three ears have all been bad, even worse than 2020 during the pandemic. And it’s mostly the live action’s fault.
I hope this new “One Piece editor” position Shueisha is creating is so there’s someone to take off some of Oda’s work on the live action production.
-
@Deicide wouldn’t be surprised if Oda will also play some part on the new WIT anime too.
Personally, can’t imagine they’ll use the same VAs, so could see them vetting new VAs under Oda’s approval, but that’s just speculation on my part. Still imagine he’d had some involvement even if the VAs aren’t replaced.
-
So no chapter this week or until December 1st?

Yeah, I don't think an editor would help much with that.
When Oda gets involved, he gets involved. He doesn't seem to want an editor go to South Africa or LA and have meetings for him, he wants to do it himself because it's his series.Same way I wouldn't help the manga if Oda had more assistants when, from his own words, he draws everything that moves, including background characters and even the clouds.

It's really odd to me that Hajrudin got the little refresher box but Stansen didn't. I get he's more important as the captain and was more central to the story, but it's because of that I feel like he needs it less. Stansen is pretty unrecognizable from his appearance at the auction house, that I wouldn't be surprised if most casual readers don't realize he's interacted with the Straw Hats before.
-
@GreatLiver I think Stansen should get an in-universe refresher when the Straw Hats meet him. (like "yo remember me? I'm the giant you freed back in the auction house in Sabaody" They don't know he's in the fleet yet afterall.
-
Reading the official still has me in the same position. This talk is too friendly. If anything, Loki and Luffy are sort of alike. Even the imma kill him part felt like Nami barking on Luffy.
-
@cavendishsama Yeah, I too think he will get a panel like that. It would be short enough to not disrupt any scene.
-
Do we think Loki’s devil fruit has anything to do with his eyes? Why are they covered? Although he already has sea stone chains on and if he just needed his eyes opened Luffy or any of the other people down with him could have just taken them off
Also there seems to be a couple similarities between Luffy and Loki, they both have trouble remembering names and can befriend giant beasts
Plus when you add there bounties together you get 5.6
Not sure if that means something or is just coincidence, although there’s also a big chance Luffy’s bounty has increased after egghead so that wouldn’t really matter, although Oda hasn’t told us the new bounty yet
-
@Shiebs said in Chapter 1131: Loki in the Underworld:

I don’t know what to make of the 5.6 connection people have pointed out.
Oda can sometimes have a pun or double meaning when choosing bounties, and I guess Nika the Sun God’s lore does state he has rubber abilities, so the gomu pun would still be relevant.
Oda could’ve easily made Loki’s bounty higher just for threat purposes a la Moria being slightly higher than Luffy’s new bounty, so imagine the 2.6B was chosen for a particular reason too. Just dunno if it’s cause of this theory.

I saw someone mention it to so I just thought I’d post it
But yeah no idea if this is something Oda planned or not, but your right that him having a lower bounty than Luffy is weird since it would be a big way to hype him up as the villain this arc
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see and trust in Oda

Not gonna lie, I actually forgot about that/didn't connect the two until you mentioned it.

Mangaplus has reverted to the usual schedule on their website, so who knows what the deal is at this point
-
Does this back and forth affect spoilers? I assumed it was just the official coming in December, but things are not clear.
-
@Cockycent My understanding is that the source in the first place was Mangaplus updating that screen to say December 2 (or 1, depending on your time zone) and all the leakery types jumping at it and racing to be the first to share the big news, assuming it meant OP would be absent from the next two issues, despite this being too early in the week for them to have seen the upcoming issue to confirm.
Now it's updated back to what it had been and everyone's realising they might have spoke too soon.
If I was going to guess now I might say that Mangaplus has some kind of automated backend date setting for weekly, fortnightly, monthly etc series that someone set to every third week for OP for the last break and forgot to set back, so it automatically set the next release date another three weeks forward. Pretty sure they've had issues with the regular one week breaks not reflecting right away in the past too.
But that's just a guess. Whether or not there's a new thread in the spoiler section when I wake up tomorrow morning will probably be the deciding factor.

I came here to comment it. So, it appears there's a chapter as usual.
But it's strange that there's been no Redon hints for next chapter so far. Usually by now he has given like 3+ hints.

I think they may do. It also called my attention that Loki says the sun does not shine on the Underworld. I feel like he's powered by light or something.
@Shiebs said in Chapter 1131: Loki in the Underworld:

I'm torn on this. I feel it's a coincidence, but it may not be. Can't decide on which side I take.
@Shiebs said in Chapter 1131: Loki in the Underworld:

I think it may be to emphasize Loki as an failed Nika. Maybe fate had the Gomu Gomu Fruit choose Luffy, but it could have chosen Loki if the circunstances were different. But then Loki goes and tries to force fate's hand by taking the legendary power of his lineage, thus showing he was the wrong Sun God.
-
Wonder if Stensen mentioning a painter was inspired by the Bifrost, the Norse Rainbow bridge: they paint a rainbow to get quickly from one stage of the tree to the next one, but it needs to be sunny to work.

I did notice Redon posting a generic Luffy King of the Pirates GIF before the mangaPlus delay situation happened, which I assume was meant to be a hint for the upcoming chapter.
Given the radio silence since then, maybe the theory that they were trying to sniff out the spoiler providers holds credence. We’ll see in a few hours anyways if early spoilers come in and how spoilers go this week.
-
@Chams-0 I had a similar thought. Stansen mention "painter" and "sunstones", so I imagined this "painter" marks a place and the "sunstones" create a rainbow bridge to it, allowing travel between Elbaph's layers.
-
You know, this just clicked to me:
- The Giant Warrior Pirates say Hajrudin couldn’t go to Egghead because there’s trouble in Elbaph and mention Loki
- However, Loki is imprisoned with no sign of his chains failing
- Gerd and Goldberg were tasked to look out for intruders.
Ergo, there are foreigners trying to rescue Loki.
