Man, crazy how Wano will be over likely in December or January. I can’t wait for Egghead.

But yeah. This episode was great. Lots of different art styles. Didn’t necessarily love all of them, but there was clearly a wide array of different talents on display here. I feel like this episode had a higher number of different animators than any other episode; there were just so many varied styles.

I think (hope) that most people who had problems with 1071 will find 1072 to be an improvement. The pacing feels much more brisk, it even covers more than one chapter, there's no repetition, and the action is easier to read while still being appropriately energetic and bonkers....which is impressive when you've got the triple threat of Bahi JD, Akihiro Ota, and the one and only Shinya Ohira (On a shonen anime?! In the year 2023?!) on the same episode.

The direction for the first half was quite strong, with the bit under the dome...and especially how the dramatics were completely deflated right before the eyecatcher...was fantastic. Second half was a little more "typical" but had some insanely strong action storyboarding from all the talent named above and I still can't believe Bahi or someone else was able to get someone like Ohira on board (he did the part where Luffy activates Gear Fifth again with all the trippy colors), even if just for a single episode. And also Ryo Onishi came back to the weekly anime for the first time since I wanna say Opening 12, "Search for the Wind" like 13 years ago (Gum Gum Giant).

1073 looks to be the breather animation-wise and then there'll be another recal the week after.

Man, I'm having trouble watching this. LOL

The episode plays perfectly on the Crunchyroll app on my iPhone, but when I try to AirPlay it onto my TV, the video glitches out right when the opening ends, and it's completely unwatchable.

For some reason, the episode isn't up on FUNimation yet, either. Not seeing it on the website OR the TV app.

I could just watch it on my computer or phone, but I really wanted the full surround sound experience.....

Gear 5 is just great... I actually watched the whole episode! I don't remember the last time i did that. I just had to see what the anime would do with it.

This was the perfect Gear 5 episode. I don't know why they did the mess they did with 1071, but this was exactly what it should have been all along. One Piece Space Jam, where Luffy is ridicolous and out of place and everyone else reacts to it.

Really happy to see it animated like this!

Hot dang! That was better than the manga. I'm inclined to say that was the best episode of OP. It felt like a culmination of what makes it so special in the first place. I couldn't stop smiling, which means that Nika was working on a meta level, too!!

edit: i've seen someone mention that 1071+72 should have been a double episode and I think they're correct. Splitting the impact of the 2 is a bit unfortunate, but I'm just happy it's happening.

To be honest, zoro vs kids second mate is far more memorable than gear 5, at least for me.

I still can;t shake the feeling that a better directot(like whoever did yamato and ace flashback, or yamato discovering luffy's dream) would have made these last 2 episodes the most memorable moments in One piece.

I didn’t like the previous episode, but this one really did the trick for me. The whole thing was super fun and exciting.
My only “con” is that I’m not a fan of sudden changes in animation/art style within an episode, but whatever.

Yes, this time we got Gear 5 in great animation and for a decent amount of time. Much better than last episode. Luffy's new power is on full display, and it looks brilliant.

Also, a tiny detail, Yamoto has pretty hair. While these two are just spectators, clearly some of that animation budget is going into hair animation.

The part where they are worried about the outcome of the battle, then Luffy's head popping in breaks the tension reminds me of how Who's Who clung to the legend of Nika. Fitting ability in multiple ways.

Much better Gear 5 episode! Animation was still all over the place (Luffy and Yamato looked a touch rotoscoped at one point) but it flowed a lot nicer.

Amazing episode. Not much more to say.

Someone on Twitter I think said the other night, "You can tell immediately when Megumi Ishitani's board section begins." It does stand out. That's how amazing she is.

That was way way better than last week. The animation and boarding was actually clear so you could follow what was going on instead of being obsessed with obnoxious camera movement for the sake of it... and the cartoon sound effects while still too much for my taste, were used more appropriately.

One thing I dislike about this amazing animation is that one day we'll probably have to experience Gear 5 in an episode with average effort and animation, and it'll look a lot worse than it does now. It's the quality of the animation here that's really selling Gear 5.

Yet, and I'll be vague for manga spoilers, I have to admit that Gear 5 has only been used at certain moments, so maybe that fear won't come to pass? Who knows.

Ishitani's section of the storyboard starts around where Kaido coils onto the ground after giant Luffy throws him and covers all the scenes under the Onigashima dome, at least up until the eyecatch and probably the part right after when Luffy pulls his head out of the hole and Nami's yelling at Marco.

But yeah, Ishitani didn't actually direct any part of this episode. The downside to her fame amongst the fanbase is people attributing every bit of good directing to her like the other directors don't exist (Yasunori Koyama? Ryosuke Tanaka? Ryota Nakamura? Nanami Michibata? etc.) and spamming her twitter account asking if she'll be on an upcoming episode.

A truly spectacular episode.

I think my only critique would be that with the sheer number of storyboard artists(who all did a good job), I think the episode sort of struggles having a uniting directorial voice.

Even in episodes like 1062, which had more than one storyboard artist, I felt Tanaka was much more capable of giving the episode a coherent narrative feel.

I sort of feel like 1017 had a similar issue, though I think that 1072 is the better directed episode where both halves feel very thematically, tonally and even visually corrected(there is a Katsumi Ishizuka homage at the end of the first half leading into the Katsumi Ishizuka animation directed portion of the episode). Shimaya seems very capable of allowing the staff under him to really use their talents, but I felt that resulted in the episode losing a little bit of a complete identity.

Even then, its still an absolutely fanatastic episode. All the staff involved deserve major credit for producing this. My complaint, is again, more of a nitpick than anything else.

After watching this episode a few more times I gotta say that Kaido's VA and overall animation were also fantastic. His laugh and comment of "Hey, you'll die" after Luffy gets up from going colorless was masterful.
