Chapter 1076: Old Friends
-
So did Shanks already dealt with Barto?
-
@KageKageKing He probably stopped by Elbaf, since it is his territory and one of the neighboring islands. Ended up spending more time than planned there because he met Dorry and Brogy and as he was about to leave to deal with Barto, Kid appeared.
Btw, now that we know the strongest island is not only Shanks' territory but also seems to be his HQ and is right next to Wano, I wonder if people will give him as much flak as they give Newgate for not trying to avenge Oden.
-
-
S-Hawk having the Dice Dice fruit was predictable. It was in my list of possibilities, thought I was hoping for something more original.
-
I love how Lucci was portrayed in this chapter. Good way to squeeze some comedy out of him.
-
Being frank, I wasn't expecting this team-up to happen so soon. I thought Luffy and Zoro would refuse, and Lucci and Kaku would run and hide until they returned later.
I like the way Luffy baited Lucci into cooperation. It was in-character for both. Good one, Oda! -
Shaka, Lilith, Pythagoras and York were cleared of all suspicion last chapter, and now Stella and Caribou (since this has been happening for 2 months) are clear as well.
This leaves Edison and Atlas. (And it's totally Atlas!)
(I knew the missing ships were important!) -
I wonder why Dorry and Brogy ended (or halted) their duel. I always thought they'd come out to the conclusion that both were wrong, so the Elbaf god wouldn't allow any of them to ever win.
-
Shanks vs Kid feels very one-sided, but... I can't shake the feeling that Kid may come through. He's certainly stronger than he was in Wano, and learned tricks just like Law and Luffy did. The big problem is not fighting Shanks 1v1, it's reaching Shanks to begin with, so...
Since Elbaf is known as a war-land, I guess there's warring tribes of giants, and I feel some of them (Loki's?) may ally with Kid, giving him the forces needed to match Shanks'.
Another possibility... what if Bartolomeu was captured by Shanks and allies with Kid as well? -
Law vs Blackbeard
Garp vs Blackbeard
Kid vs Shanks
Luffy vs MarinesIt's clear that a huge war is looming. The "someone vs someone" teased by Oda wasn't just about just two big names! And the free-for-all won't be in a single place!
This will put Marineford to shame!
-
-
So Sandman alluded to this already, but the dead comment seemed to be seeing the giants who thought Dorry and Broggy are dead, not that he thought Dorry and Broggy are dead.
-

What? It's about them not fighting till death anymore and that they are reunited again... just like Neko and Inu.

But they have seen each other every day. They haven’t seen the other giants for 100 years. Don’t think they were talking about the two meeting each other.

Who?
Shanks didn't see Dorry and Brogy every day...
He's happy to seem them on friendly terms instead of fighting each other till one of them is dead. -
Despite having evidence that the Seraphim attacks cannot be traced back to him, this chapter actually made me suspect that Shaka knows way more about what's going down than he's letting on. It already struck me as odd that Shaka seemed absolutely convinced that he was going to die before anything in the present even happened - right after Lilith found the Straw Hats no less - and that when CP0 arrived he knew immediately what their intentions were when the other satellites didn't. But now with this chapter, he not only stresses for the second time protecting the Stella is top priority (possibly implying that Punk Records won't survive if the Stella dies) but seems to make his decision on leaving CP0 up to Luffy after Lucci informs him that CP0's mission was to kill all 7 Vegapunks and now Stussy. He also knew exactly where Bonney was the whole time, and didn't seem to mind that she was in Kuma's Secret Memory Chamber that the Stella didn't want her to go anywhere near.
I wouldn't be surprised if Shaka and whoever ordered the Seraphim have been in something of an arms race over Egghead for the last two months. It would at least explain why the strange events seems to be at odds with finding a cohesive motive. Someone leaking the Poneglyph research to the WG either for personal gain or because they're a satellite with a death wish, and then Shaka responding by disappearing the Cipher Pol agents who were investigating those claims, and the other person in turn responding by deploying the Seraphim, makes a little more sense to me than one person doing both actions that cancel each other out while pissing off all their potential allies in the process.
-
So Kid is suicidal and who do you guys think the traitor is?
-
- Robin looking so good in the colorspread is always a treat.
- I wonder if the poneglyph research is about translation or more about the losing 4th stone. Maybe Oda will spice things up with a hint of the last lost red ponelgyph by the end of the arc.
- Ok when Oda drops 100 navy ships I can only think of a huge demonstration of power by the hero side - either Vegatechnology upgrades, the StrawHat Fleet showing up (Dressrosa's end alludes to something historical, right?), Zeus cooking up a storm, idk!
- I hope that Oda mirrors what he did with Law Vs BB so that we get to see what the Red Hair Pirates can do, and move on the next dramatic point. Law had a good run, but I'm a-ok with him fumbling the top positions and ending up as a silver medalist (or even change his goal and focus on the D plot). Kid had a...run. An ok-ish one, if any, and I can even see him surviving the clash with RHP and th Giant Pirates, but definitively loosing a spot at the front of the race and falling down to the mid-seats. I'm hella cool with Oda putting Shanks, Teach, Luffy and Buggy as the front runners for the One Piece treasure - that's what I'm getting with this week's chapters and the 105 cover structure.
- Watching the Giants again was a huge nostalgia slap. I'm really curious how Oda is gonna settle their honor based struggle without feeling souless, since I myself can't think of anything better than some postponement.
-
One Marine Battleship is said to be able to carry over 1000 soldiers... so, there are 100000 man headed to Egghead... wtf is going on...
That's Summit War level, isn't it? -
-
OMG, I love petty Lucci and him taking the bait. He was great in Water 7 because of how threatening he was, now being lower on the food chain compared to Luffy I just love their interactions. That and how matter of fact he is with what he will want to do was easily the highlight of the chapter. Which is crazy considering we had a wild Shanks appearance, as well as the return of Dorry and Broggy, with Kid coming in to fight.
I completely forgot that other Cipher Pols came to investigate the island, so seeing them there imprisoned alongside the real Vegapunk just furthers the mystery.
-
@Zhenja Battleships are the absolute biggest ships in their fleet, thought, and this one is said to be composed of ships of all sizes.
As such, the number won't go as high as that. There will be many standard crews.
-
Messy colorspread that I'm not really a big fan of. Especially when I just want the cover story to hurry up and get to the end already.
Everything with Luffy, Zoro, Lucci, and Kaku is pure gold fun one piece. It'll be curious to see what happens here next. Will Bear and Hawk just come right back and keep fighting or just start blasting elsewhere? Will our group give chase if the Seraphim don't come back? Or will Lucci just start trying to bite Luffy's ass immediately?
Hard to tell if Nami's scream is a sign she's getting attacked by S-Shark or she just found more treasure/was told the gems were all useless. I would normally assume Sanji would hear and come running first, but it started expectations that one of Luffy or Zoro will come running first.
I'm guessing the holding cells are gonna be in a basement floor or somewhere hidden off that we won't see any of the cast accidentally stumble on anytime soon. More of our cast up above are probably gonna end up captured down here eventually. I could definitely see a point of almost or all 7 punks together in the same cell and maybe some strawhats in another one. This feels like the room where the big reveals are gonna happen. The other scenario thought would just be Caribou stumbles into the room and releases everyone later.
At the moment, I think Caribou is just hiding outside around the ship and hasn't started exploring yet. Guy would be terrified by all the shit happening and would stay put.
I have no clue what to go off with the Elbaf Shanks + Giants vs. Kidd setup. This feels way too one-sided to not be suspicious of something happening to help out Kidd here. Maybe another faction of the "proud warrior race" will call foul and the giants helping Shanks. Law I can see recovering from the BB fight without being totally out of the game, but Kidd just seems doomed and it'd be a very awkward message after Wano. Unless Luffy's also getting set up for a big L. I'm at a loss.

Says who? Kizaru asked for Battleships, his fleet consisted of battleships...
-
Thanks Gizmo for remembering my post.
Unlike fan translations, Viz official translation about Shanks: "When old friends who thought each other dead are reunited." sounds like "The giants thought Shanks was dead." I agree with this translation. Japanese fans are already discussing why they thought Shanks was dead.
That said, it might be Oda's mistake. His Japanese wording is not always perfect. For example, in JP, Lucci said 鼻にもかけない, meaning they weren't boastful about Franky, which doesn't make sense. Oda should have wrote, 歯牙にもかけない, meaning not paying any attentions.
-
Our colour pages this week feel like a return to familiar territory. After a long run of both colour spreads and Jump covers being taken up by Film Red promos or Gear Five, we finally get some current-arc outfits on the cover and a more traditional colour spread that looks great, despite the lack of animals. The magazine clipping angle is a new and novel one that came out a treat. Hopefully Oda's been building up some more unique ideas like this while he was doing all the promotional ones. Hang on though, is Sanji wearing a Garfield shirt? Honestly I could see the off-brand Garf with the ill-fitting slogn going the distance in a round of Jackbox Tee K.O.
This chapter is either the first of volume 107 or the eleventh of 106, and I could see the argument going either way. The opening page reiterating Cipher Pol's offer is a good note to bring returning readers in on, but a big Shanks appearance makes for a very strong ending note. We might not know this one for sure until we get the next volume's pagecount.
I really like the interactions between the crew and Cipher Pol at the start of the chapter. Luffy being too trusting and Lucci being too blunt while their partners berate them is really fun stuff. How did Lucci manage to stay undercover for so many years with that big mouth though? Or does Luffy just put him that on-edge.
I think it's interesting that neither Cipher Pol nor Shaka contradict Zoro when he says there must be four Seraphim on the loose. Presumably because he's right and S-Crocodile, S-Bat and S-Flamingo are being used elsewhere. No more surprise extra clones. But it means we have to wait to see the younger Crocodile, which I'm a little curious about, given the theories about him.
S-Bear does some serious damage to the lab here. This probably won't be a super protracted conflict then, given that basically every move so far has caused noticable and lasting damage to the structure. It won't last through much more! Although we can see the two small buildings by the entry ramp looking mostly unharmed here, so what did the Seraphim's opening volley even hit?
Would have been nice to see more of the different fighting styles here working in tandem, but it also makes sense that big double hits from fighters on this level would be too much for even the mighty seraphim. Not that it's confirmed that these two are down for good, of course...
Luffy's coat managing to fit around him in Gear Four makes it all the more egregious that it magically disappeared and returned when he fought Lucci in Gear Give down below.
The scene deep within the lab certainly changes some things. I really was a believer that the Vegapunks were vanishing Cipher Pol ships to keep news of their illegal research getting back to the Government for as long as possible, but we see here that the Stella at least had no knowledge of it. Who or whatever the enemy is though, what goal are they trying to achieve by keeping all these captured agents alive? And what is the enemy's motive anyway, seeing as they've attacked Vegapunk, the Strawhats and Government operatives all, as well as drawing the Government's suspicion in the first place? Bonney hasn't been attacked since reaching the upper lab, it's worth noting, and may even have been led to Kuma's memories by the enemy making a machine beep at the right time. But she was attacked directly by the PX III cop that conveniently chased Luffy's group to the Ancient Robot before, so I'm not convinced the local machines are on her side either.
And then we get some Shanks scenes, which is truly unexpected so soon after his end of Wano cameo. Hey, how many kids in bars has he mentored over the years? Dude's been planting seeds all over the place. It's cool that we're getting to see Shanks having a larger fleet and more Emperor-appropriate organisation structure as well. One of those ships seems to have a Bepo figurehead. Distant relatives maybe? The spread of the Red Haired Crew and the giants is one of the cleanest we've had in years. I don't mind busy pages, but it is nice to see a big picture getting to breathe a little more. And ah, the nostalgia of Dory, Broggy, Oimo and Kashii all being there!
Kid's showing a lot of confidence challenging Shanks directly with his whole fleet there and the giants willing to back him up. I would probably not bet in his favour.
I'm hoping after the break we're due for at least one solid clue toward the enemy's identity or nature, but I'm not holding my breath for an update on Shanks and Kid. Whatever Oda puts in the chapter, if he keeps cooking with the same ingredients he's been using for the last couple, I'm gonna be happy.
-
@Zhenja what? This very chapter says it so: over 100 ships of all sizes. This means it can’t be all warships.
-
Been about 11 1/2 years since we last saw Dorry and Brogy, so about time they came back.
-
-
This arc is continuing a trend that everyone except for the Strawhats are having a really, really crappy day. Or in some cases, two months. This island sucks for everyone involved despite it being a fun adventure.
Also, we got a Luffy-Zoro-Lucci-Kaku team up. That was neat. I guess someone wanted to see that...maybe? It wasn't me, but if it's you it's fine. I liked it.
-
100 ships including an admiral and an elder star that could take control of all the Pacifistas and Setaphims doesn’t exactly sound like a good time. Plus there’s that traitor they gotta worry about.
Then again, the crew never really deals with the Marines at the end/aftermath of the arc and get away somehow so something’s bound to happen…
-
Details:
- Vegapunk's sillouette in prison matches perfectly with the one in Punk Hazard. Now I can understand that what I thought was a skinny arm was actually his tongue under the mustache. Cool to see his design so early.
- Oda knows how to make Sanji sexy in the covers
-
@Coookie The official ommited the information, then. Both unofficial translations included "ships of all sizes" in that transmission.
TCB Scans:
OPScans:
I feel it makes sense the marines are rallying all kinds of ships since this is not a planned operation and they are gathering as much resources as they can.
Since I doubt both unofficials would make up info, I assume official just thought it was too much information and cleared the message.

Shanks was never shown to be as close to Oden as Whitebeard nor was he ever his captain, and Whitebeard was established from his very first mention as the man who'll take revenge on anyone messing with his crewmates

Good chapter. So curious who the traitor is.
Still have no clue how Kidd and crew can win this... Or better... How Oda will make it believable
-
Do you think Cross Guild will give CP0 members bounties too? I wonder what Lucci and Kaku will get for a bounty if they do
-
@electricmastro it could also interpreted as Dorry and Brogy knew Saul from before and met him, in which case each had a good reason to believe one of the others had died. Shanks was simply present and enjoyed the reunion, no-one thought him dead.
-
Stephen isn't infallible, but always leave it to hobby/Google translators to have the absolute confidence to know better than paid professionals.
Borsalino ordering any Battleship to Egghead doesn't mean that all ships that are coming will be of that class. Just as they were heading to Egghead for an operation, even before Luffy teamed up with Vegapunk, other non-Battleships were likely as well.
Having a ship of a certain size doesn't mean it will be manned to its upmost capacity.
If someone tells you that there's a group of over 100 people coming to a place, do you expect them all to be the same height, or does it need to be specified that there will be both tall and short people?
And maybe you should bother to read the official version before claiming that something was or was not said. But that's just my common sense talking. What does it know.
-
@Captain-M Week three of the video experiment, this time trying to be a bit more freeform and less reliant on a script.
Thanks to all who watch and provide feedback.
-
Seing the cover makes me think I didn't imagine the suits with these colors (especially Chopper's one)
I guess he used the standard characters colors but it does not really match the strong black of the manga -
@Captain-M You are getting way better at this. I see nothing particular in need of correction. It's now time to aim for a bigger audience and get feedback from more people.
-
@Deicide Thank you! I've really appreciated the guidance through these first few videos.
-
From the last scene it seems like Elbaf is part of Shanks territory. Do you think it happened after Big Mum failed attempt to marry Lola ?
-
@Kdom Since Elbaf is called a “war-land” I guess it’s divided among several warring tribes/Kingdoms and Shanks may have part of the territory but not its entirety. Big Mom and Loki probably wanted to use their alliance to take over the entirety of Elbaf.
I theorize Loki probably controls most of Elbaf and may want to ally with Kid against Shanks.
-
@Deicide For what it's worth, Scandinavia during the Viking Age was not particularly unified, as Norway alone had several petty kings and independent Jarls.
-
@Deicide I've thought of some of the same things.
How divided up is Elbaf and why does certain parts require protection and from who? WG vs Elbaf, Elites vs common folk, split by religion/values.
What side would Kid and Smoothie take in the end if Loki and the crew opposed each other?
Killer is the voice of reason and if a Loki alliance presented itself, I think he could convince Kid to relax and listen.
After her mother and oldest brother, Smoothie seems to be more of a leader out of those that traveled to Wano. I remember the debate between Pero and other siblings over who would lead the BM Pirates that ended with Smoothie getting the last word (934).
Still waiting to see an update on that group. They either returned to Totto Land or followed Kid. I think they attacked the Cipher Pol ship as well. Also a chance that Pero might have given them BM's Vivre Card that he had. I think Nami has a piece still after the other piece was taken from her.
BM's fate can be revealed the next time her card is brought up.
Smoothie's DF allows her to grow in size, so she can visually fit a Giant theme too (894).
Beyond an Usopp narrative, Charlotte Family drama, Kid opportunity, befriended Giants, I think Oda has something in store for Elbaf that might date back to former subplots. Wano touched on a bit of Zoro origins, Pluton that goes all the way back to Alabasta, Minatomo, seastone, etc.
Maybe Elbaf has some link to a longstanding question. They could possibly be some of the early pirates because Vikings are raiders/pirates.
Kaido and BM's combined attack is not too far from Dorry and Brogy's Hakoku in name and the way they performed it. Wouldn't be surprised if there is some known lore with Giants and pirates.
Viz uses "Sovereignty" in the name for both attacks from BM. That leads to the next part.
There's the possibility of the non WG affiliated countries coming together in the future with Vivi having a part. WG probably tried to get Elbaf and it was a leader in self governing and successfully standing up to them.
-

If an Admiral orders Battleships, he better get Battleships...
-
@Zhenja As I've said, the World Government and the Marines have already been planning an operation on Egghead since before the Straw Hats got there. Borsalino is going to get his Battleships, still doesn't mean that the 100+ ships fleet will consist exclusively of those.
-
@Cockycent
Good call, I was thinking about the Big Mom Pirates yesterday!I think it’s a given we will see Revolutionaries, Big Mom Pirates and Cross Guild making their moves before Egghead is over.
BM Pirates could either move against Blackbeard (for Pudding) or in revenge against Kid. They could even splinter into factions!
Revolutionaries will probably face the Government.
Cross Guild is the big question… they debuted as marine hunters, but they also have ties to Shanks (via Buggy and Mihawk), so I could see them moving against the Government, against Kizaru’s fleet or even going to Elbaf.
-
Such a shame that Elbuff of all places needs a yonko protection
They shouldn't !!
Oda Fucked all its hype with this dumb reveal.
events in Egghead is more interesting than spike head dummy
one thing that makes zero sense is why would the government spy who informed on Vegapunk would trap and imprison cipher pol agents who are supposed to be on his side ? only a rebel would do that! but a rebel wouldn't inform the five elders about punk trespassing a prohibited matter so what the fuck is going on ?
also oda dropped many hints that the culprit is a vegapunk clone and 90% of readers bought that but not me
because that would make vegapunk the dumbest scientist without a question like how could you make something that suppose to serve you to kill you ? we're talking about a serious humongous mistake that simply doesn't fit punk's reputation as the most genius.
-
@Deicide This is why i'm keeping an eye on these non Egghead events.
3 individuals involved in the Rocky Port Incident are now entangled - Koby (hero), Law (mastermind), Teach (attained Hachinosu).
Now Garp wants to get Koby back and how would Aokiji act with Garp possibly in his way. Also, did Koby come on his own or was he captured?
Then, the entanglement of BM Pirates and Law. Law supposedly just killed BM and Puddin doesn't look that heavily targeted. Puddin can benefit Law if her eye ability awoken since he wants the truth.
2 things we know BM wanted - Puddin's third eye ability and Elbaf might can possibly end up with the 2 who defeated her in Wano - Kid and Law in theory.
It would be Kata on 1 front going after Puddin or even Smoothie setting her sights on Teach. It was reported to Akainu that Law vs Teach was going on on Winner Island. With Smoothie and the BM Pirates ambushing the CP ship, Smoothie most likely has that information.
They are good with intelligence gathering, so I can see taking over the resources of the CP ship after jamming their signal as a plus for them.
Then there's Cross Guild. I remember Croc speaking on ruining the WG's chances during the war and Mihawk just wanted a challenge.
This group is interesting because of the current OP world climate. Kid said that even civilians are getting in on it. It serves more as a movement than just a Yonko crew. It reminds me of how Buggy attained the following of the Impel Down prisoners.
In a time where the WG's possible worst fear of their facade slipping away, groups uniting, and truths being revealed, the people are revolting via the 8 Nation Revolution and regular folk are being empowered by the Revolutionary Army and Cross Guild.
I would also keep observing Vivi with the best communication device in OP - Big News. Her voice along with Croc's defeat (rain) is what stopped the civil war. I think her voice is possibly used to unite against the WG.
Cross Guild's existence just feels a lot like anti Gov't.
3 things concerning the Rev Army. 1, Kuma is on the move and we know it's tied to the immediate plot on Egghead. 2, Sabo's fate is still in play.
I mention this because Sabo, Sanji, and Zoro all have a piece of Luffy's Vivre Card. Will they be separated and need it?
Lastly, Dragon was the one told by Shaka that he thinks "his" death is going to happen. Does he mean the main guy or 1 of his 5 counterparts?
-
@Cockycent
This big war will have a ton of crazy reveals and developments, it feels like Oda will use it to shatter the status quo and set the stage for the last few arcs.Right now, I'm thinking next "arc" will this conflict, kinda like we got the Reverie focusing away from the Straw Hats for a bit. The crew will probably be trying to escape Kizaru's fleet meanwhile.
So, in a very short span of chapters, we may get lots of titanic battles happening all over the place, and old players falling one after another. It will be pretty thrilling, and I doubt we will be able to predict every twist or result in each battle.
-
@Deicide I haven't said this much, but I'm of the opinion that the Big War has been playing out basically since leaving Wano and will hit a crescendo after Egghead. I don't want to argue about it, but I wanted to have that opinion on the record.
