^ It’s just another port of the SNES game thigh this is essentially using the PSP version, with some QoL improvements some of which was in the Saturn port.

It's a partial remake(not graphically but gameplay wise). Outside Qol Improvements they reworked the AI and actually changed gameplay as well as rebalanced stuff.
Calling it just a port with some QoL is false, well at least if the marketing is to be believed. We won't know for sure until we can play it.
I’ve played the PSP version of the game and this looks pretty much like that game. From the touched up sprites & redrawn character portraits. To the fonts in the dialog boxes.
This isn’t say FF7 remake i.e. a whole new game being remade from a preexisting game.
It’s pretty much in the same vein as the Live A Live, & The Romancing Saga 2 & 3 remasters.

Yeah again they're not changing much graphically so dunno why you bring up it looks the same.
I'm going off on their marketing where they have announced several features and changes that actually change the game. Like class leveling isn't a thing anymore instead leveling is now unit specific is one of the more prominent changes they highlighted. AI changes as well don't really highlight well in videos.
Regardless maybe you have a different definition of "port" but as far as I've seen the term used by a majority of people a port generally doesn't change the actual gameplay and is mostly concerned with making it playable on another machine while maybe adding some QoL things like a speed up option or similar.
When we're starting to change the game it usually crosses in the territory of remasters/remake as far as I've seen the terms used.
Again I also leave it open for their marketing to overstate the changes and it might not feel very different in play as well, but just based on what we know it doesn't sound like just a port at all.
Anyhoo, here's some info about it:

Because you said it was a partial remake which is a bit overly generous. If it were a remake it wouldn’t look like the same exact game that was released in 2010/1995. It’d look more modern? Maybe even use the 2D/3D stuff they’ve been using recently.
It’s pedantic I know. And hopefully as many people play the game this time around so Square will hopefully pluck the series out of limbo going forward and either “properly’” remake some of the other games or make a sequel.

To me if they're rewriting game systems that's kinda partially remade to me cause I'm coming at it from the coding side. Like the AI they've written when this game was released was just done under way different hardware constraints and also based on a much different knowledge base in the sense that there is a lot more knowledge that has proliferated around in the years.
So with how they're advertising the AI thing to me that's basically a substantial rewrite of what those systems are from scratch. To me when I call it partial remake it doesn't really relate to how it looks I'm assuming the literal meaning that something was partially remade. It's not additive changes or slight adjustments but actually something about it got remade.
If that is disagreeable I'm not particularly fussed about the term and you can choose whatever fits your view better though. Just wanted to clear up why I called it a partial remake. That said I dunno what is generous about that either. Since I'm not claiming it as a full remake but a partial one.
I just hope it sparks some interest in making some more Ogre Battle.
I assume the price tag (~50 usd) will put a lot of people off. I'm looking forward to the game but definitely seen a lot of reluctance in my circle about giving it a try.
I loved the hell out of the game on psp, I'm absolutely picking up the new version. The story is really really solid.
Fair warning, there is a bonus dungeon with 100 floors in it. You might be tempted to do it because of loot or secret characters to recruit or whatever.
Don't do it until you've finished the story, it will eat all your time and demotivate you.

The game’s janky leveling system demotivated me even with me completing the story.
Well the update is fixing that by returning it to character levels instead of class levels, so that should help.
We can hope

Release tomorrow!
Been playing this hardcore this weekend and talking to people that played the psp version really highlights how deep the balance changes go.
No having reached chapter 2 yet but the immediate 2 things that I was told is that archers got super nerfed, coupled with the change to the leveling system cheesing your way through with mass archers doesn't work anymore.
The other change I was told about is that the new balance pass on monsters has brought a lot more choices into that aspect of the game although things might get figured out with time again, more monsters in general than before shine positively at the beginning of the game.
So, is this still like the PSP where you can recruit Orcs and Lizardmen characters for your standard classes?
yes recruitment is still part of the game nothing got removed afaik just things got rebalanced to allow for more gameplay variety from what I can gather.

Yes you can, but they lack a lot of the diversity of other units so they'll get overshadowed later on. They have some abilities that can make them useful early on but they're vastly outclassed by the unique characters, so don't bother unless you really love their look.
Reached chapter 3 and I'm starting to understand why people regard this a very special game based on the writing.
Having a great time with it but three things that did strike me are there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust what type of AI behavior you have set outside of going into a battle with AI off and then setting it again. This is also kinda clunky given you can only turn off/on AI for all units so if you just wanna change the behavior of a single unit you have to do all of them regardless. The way equipment menu and general navigation is nested away from the shop lacking features like equip on buy kinda sucks. The crafting in comparison is a much smoother experience.
It's also notable how this game has a very short downtime period between maps which isn't a negative really but more a thing that was interesting cause games like Triangle or Fire Emblem I think have deliberately included and leaned in more on elements that extends the time you have between one battle and the next doing things like relationship events or story scenes or similar. TO basically just has you checking in on equipment and skills and even then given that there isn't always something new it's common to just chain map to map.
Lastly the speed up turns option is nice but sadly still very slow overall.
All in all just minor things for me personally but def a game that might make people that only know modern games struggle.
I've learned one thing that was indeed removed from the psp version which was the psp exclusive addition of the rogue class.
Apparently the budget didn't allow for it to be re-included because of the extensive balancing work.
Damn budget cuts have now put video game characters out of jobs too.
The thing that sticks out to me in this game the most is how resilient the gameplay has been to devolve into one tapping units(1 hit ko-ing) which I think that is like core to like most SRPGs. I'm in chapter 3 now and this is about the point where I'd usually expect setups to come into their own and things getting to that one tap style gameplay.
While it makes battles slower I think it also makes a lot of decisions more interesting. It's really curious how I don't think I've played an SRPG in a while with this kind of approach.
