Yeah, I'm really hyped for the anime. Seems like a breath of fresh air.

The cartoon is going to have some good staff, so I'm hoping it it will turn good. My concern is that it's not going to have a comparable sense of leadership. The comic feels like it has the unified voice of Fujimoto, as one might expect, but I'm not sure I sense Nakayam Ryuu's voice as the series director of the cartoon from the trailers we have gotten so far.
-
I'm still having plenty of fun with it, even though War Devil seems a bit bland up until now
-
New Chapter out.
-
I loved the cat thing.
Also skinning someone alive with a swipe of a chainsaw is one hell of a feat.
(I thought that was what happened at first, then realized on a second glance that it was merely the skinless cokroach devil smashing bat devil to death) -
I skimmed the latest chapters and this seems cool, but also very, very bleak. Like, is this some sort of "everything is very heightened, Human Life has barely any value so don't worry about the gruesome deaths" type deal

While entirely true, it is also not really new in Chainsaw man I would venture ? We've had gruesome deaths and a cast of main characters who don't value human lives a lot since day 1. Characters survive to the best of their ability amid the omnipresent devil attacks (and not for a very long time in most cases) while trying to cope (and sometime care) with the sudden disappearance of their comrades. Where the recent batch may differ from the first half of the manga, is that devils seem more present this time around. They're introduced as some sort of natural disaster you get used to, whereas before they felt more like a men-in-black type of occurence that devil hunters and governments hunt down and exploit when possible.
It might be a signature of Fujimoto's works at large that most characters out there are borderline psychopaths who are almost completely numb to everyone dying around them (cf Fire Punch). As a reader there were a couple deaths that left a mark in part one, but I have to admit most others are either there for the fireworks, as part a joke, or both.
-
As someone who has gone through all chapters in a couple of days, Chainsawman is extremely creative in some parts, but it's also quite aggressively bleak, yes. Also, it is horny in a very bizarre way.
I enjoyed it quite a lot, to be honest, though it's true at times the disregard for characters' lives can be a bit numbing, as in at some point you just go "ok, wathever, guess this guy's also dead". For some reason, the art, the quirkiness and the "world" reminds me a bit of Dorohedoro, just. . .much angrier.
Still, it's a worthy ride, me thinks.
-
That's a good point, I guess.
-
If even bishonen Yoshida can refute, is because Denji got some big brains.
-
y-yes, that'll probably happen, too.
-
Convince me people. Is this manga worth reading?

I've only read the first two volume so far. Fujimoto is really funny and the art is great but personally I think his true masterpiece is the 200-page one-shot Goodbye, Eri. I definitely suggest at least checking that out but Chainsaw Man almost feels like a warm-up to that work in a way.
-
@JulieYBM I felt that Don't Look better was better. But in any case, being in your taste or not, Fujimoto is absolute kino.
-
Manga Chainsaw Man gets an anime produced by MAPPA and the author Tatsuki Fujimoto commented
"Chainsaw Man is like a copy cat of DoroHedoro and Jujutsu Kaisen,
and the studio of DoroHedoro and Jujutsu Kaisen will produce its anime !?
I have nothing to say ! Please do it !!"
If any of those two is of your taste, Chainsaw will also be.

I don't think I've read Don't Look Better yet. I was just re-reading Goodbye, Eri yesterday and it had me in tears again. I think the themes just really hit home for me. lol

Wait, there was a 200-page one-shot goodbye? I didn't even know that.

To me it is the best manga to debut in SJ in over a decade, maybe more. It is a manga that is meant to be fun first thing and is so competent in doing so, while also having the most pungent scenes that hit you like a truck.
The writer is known for his absolute lack of adherence to tropes, being a cinephile that loves making references, deeply moving scenes that come from nowhere, but also can be very bleak and loves gore (two things that some people may dislike). And I definitely don’t think you should read any of Fujimoto one-shot firsts because: their tone is completely different, they are not meant to be a battle shonen, and, due to be one-shots, are much better packed. Those could lead to expectations that will obviously not be met
-
I read Berserk. I'm no stranger to gore. And what series that features a chainsaw wouldn't have gore?
But you convinced me to at least give it a try.

I'm referring to the 200-page "Goodbye, Eri" from Fujimoto. I don't know if there is an official free upload of the one-shot anyone, though.

As I said, first time I hear about it. Will have to check if I can find it somewhere. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
-
@Ivotas If Goodbye, Eri and Don't Look Back aren't anymore on Mangaplus they are on nyaa
-
"Goodbye, Eri" is a must read for any comic fan. Not even just manga.
My feeling reading it was pretty much the same I had watching "Everything everywhere at the same time" (and I don't think there is a higher compliment I can give).Unfortunately is not up on Manga Plus anymore. If you are going to read somewhere else I recommend trying to find a reader that loads both pages together like Manga Plus. A lot of Fujimoto scenes (not just in Eri) are made taking into account how it will visually play when both pages are together even when they are not a double spread, and which page will lead into which when you flip (most artists do that, obviously, but Fujimoto really put emphasis on that).
-
Thanks for the feedback guys. Will see what I can do.
-
@access-timeco It's on Viz if you have a subscription.
-
New chapter out.
It's pure comedy gold.
-
Hahahaha I think I'm going to enjoy Denji's school life A LOT.
Here's to hoping War Devil doesn't ruin the fun too soon.
-
If he really wants to show he's chainsawman, is there a reason he can't just transform? I don't remember him having trouble switching back, controlling himself or anything that would be a huge issue, other than losing blood.

New chapter of what? Is the series being continued? O.o
-
-
@Ivotas Yes, the second part recently started. It's now in Shonen Jump +, but for us it makes little difference as it's still in mangaplus. It seems to come twice a month*.
-
@El-Matematico
I didn't even know that. That's great news. Thanks for the info. -
Twice a week no, one every two weeks.
-
-
Chainsaw goes FRRRRRRRMMMMMM! (I'm excited)
-
New chapter out.
-
KEKed with the War Demon this chapter
Justice Devil, uh? I'm expecting a twist on the victim's selection.
-
Justice sure is nosy.
-
I loved Asa scolding Yoru. "Come on, Chainsaw Man isn't that stupid"
...Or is he? ^____^
Also, Fuji really has a knack for creepy awkward situations. That friendly secrets sharing... -
New chapter out.
-
This either becomes weekly or we'll need more pages. This was way too short
sees next chapter will be out next week
Ok then.
EDIT: Opening (featuring Nobel nominée Power) and Ending:
-
anyone feels like the 3d/cgi is a bit janky at parts? for the first episode
-
That bit where he stands up in Chainsaw "form" and looks around slowly, yeah, looked weird. But I didn't had any problem with the rest. Was pretty excited the whole of the time considering how meh the first chapter was in the manga.
-
yeah I was wondering what exactly was offputting to me and I think it's the shading/lighting and the lower frame rates, I noticed this for other characters that use 3d models/cgi too. It seems a bit janky. I wouldn't exactly call this a great start tho but then JJK didn't start off as the best either. Can't wait for the wild rid.e
-
New chapter out
-
Dammit, I still forgot to get back into this series. What chapter does the re-serialization start again? Was it chapter 98?
-
@Ivotas yes, 98. Enjoy!
-
@akagami7
Thank you very much.^^
