Maybe the real closed room mystery is why we keep reading year after year.
Nah but that's rough. Nothing worse than being hooked on a plot point for a long runner

I think every once in a while I come across a story where I am way too interested about a plot point the story dont care about.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Although usually thats tv show
That's quite easy. I've been following this series for exactly two decades now. And it's constantly being 2-3 episodes/3-4 chapters of the exact same cases over and over and over again, with literally no change in them. It feels like watching the movies Groundhog Day or Edge of Tomorrow only with constantly the same loop.
Yeah, same for me. I also would have loved to see some variation. Especially in the morality department. I mean it's basically always one victim and three suspects. And: The victim was actually a super asshole who did the murderer absolutely injustice in the past. Therefore, the murderer just was a better person that the murderee. Though, with varying degree, of course.
I mean let's be real: On an intellectual level all the detective characters basically are even. There might be some actual differences when they are introduced, but once they get promoted to regulars, basically everyone just feels the same. Like Heiji: In his introduction he wanted to beat Shinichi at all costs, therefore he prioritized swiftness over accuracy. That was his flaw which led to his demise in that very first encounter. However, after the narrative has completely dealt with his character flaw, he doesn't seem to have any real narrative purpose which justifies him appearing so often. He's basically Shinichi 2.0 - and nothing more.
I would like to see one of the following scenarios:
As usual, Conan and Heiji once again simultaneously solve the case. However, whereas Conan wants to resolve the murder, Heiji instead comes to the conclusion that the murderer is the fully real victim here who doesn't deserve any criminal prosecution at all.
Conan and Akai both solve the case. However, Akai tells him that for the grand scheme of things this time they have to let it slide. Otherwise, they lose some chances to finally take down the organization once and for all. Therefore, will Conan accept that this one time a murderer will get away scot-free…?
Are there actually some later cases which instead of the whodunit revolve around some morality issues as their primary source of conflict?
I remember heiji being cool.
Maybe the real closed room mystery is why we keep reading year after year.
Nah but that's rough. Nothing worse than being hooked on a plot point for a long runner
There's nothing wrong with being hooked on a plot point for a long runner if the long runner is actually good. One Piece is a prime example. Back then when I was not into the world and characters pretty much the only thing that got me to occasionally watch it, was the idea of them going for this big treasure a legendary pirate has hidden. Just like any good pirate story. Then I saw one thing that got me to watch it weekly and then I got into everything else because there's lots of things to draw you in.
Conan on the other hand is a long runner that long has overstayed it's welcome. There's nothing new or interesting in the repetative cases. Especially since it's clearly that the author or publisher or both are milking this. It was around 2009/2010 when the author said that all the pieces are on the board and all characters for the main plot are introduced and that the endgame would start in about a year. We're more than a decade behind this. But no, we get new characters like this Rum guy because we have to artifically inflate the main plot thread since the series has to be milked. Main plot threads in a long runner are not a bad thing in itself. Artificially extending it is.

My thought's exactly. Another thing that the author could do is actually stopping one of those murders from happening. I mean since most of the victims committed a crime in the first place, how about having Conan notice something is going is about to happen and try to stop the murder instead? Would also be nice change if we stop someone, who wants to bring justice on a criminal from becoming a criminal themselves. A private detective doesn't always have to solve just murder cases of people who die in front of their feet. Stumbling across something that history has deemed an accident for years and clearing up that it was actual murder is just as much a murder mystery case. Also there's only so much I can take a group of kids running into people constantly getting murdered in front of them.
Are there actually some later cases which instead of the whodunit revolve around some morality issues as their primary source of conflict?
As I said, I mostly skim through those regular cases but I don't think that anything has changed on that front yet.
I also used to get annoyed at the slow progression a long time ago because I only cared about the overarching plot that was being drip-fed, so in a sense I lost interest and abandoned the series. Years later I revisited it, paying attention to the cases, and noticed things that I might've missed or forgotten about. Somehow I found myself reframing my thoughts and started enjoying it more than I used to, and I stopped getting bothered by the immense suspension of belief required, not getting annoyed by how many Valentines they've gone through or how many unrealistic murders the kids are witnessing, or how much technology had advanced despite only less than a year passing in this floating timeline. I'm not saying everyone should think like this though but it certainly helped me go back to enjoying it.
I guess it's like I was asking myself if I got annoyed at Gintama or Sket Dance for their comedy arcs of the month that delayed their main serious plots. Now that they're done, in a fraction of Conan's time, maybe I'm subconsciously yearning for more so I started looking at Conan in a different light and appreciated the work that went into the mysteries of the month especially when compared to how weak the anime fillers are, despite how often the author takes breaks nowdays – Like One Piece, I think it'll be exciting to finally get to the end but at the same time I know I'll be really sad when it's over.
not getting annoyed by how many Valentines they've gone through
I'm super out-of-the-loop on Conan, but is that true? Years ago, I remember reading somewhere that there are actually no repeat holidays (in the manga). I found that pretty remarkable.

Never read Sket Dance but as far as Gintama is concerned it does in no way compare to Conan. Yes, there's stand alone arcs and overaching plot arcs. But the standalone arcs are all complately different and cover all kind of stories. Some are good, sone are not. But they are not a constant rehash of the same crap we've seen a hundred times before (that's not even figure of speech at this point).

Can't say I'm counting but as far as Valentines Day and Hanami are concerned, there have been definitely more than one occasion where those days have occurred in the story.

Yeah, this absolutely makes no sense. There are way too much cases where they meet both the victim and the suspects BEFORE the actual murder. And then - BEFORE the murder - the would-be victim gets into some kind of heated argument and then decides to go into his room or some other place - alone. Shouldn't Conan and the others after all these times at least be a little bit more genre-savvy?
Ever considered that Shinichi/Conan actually is the true boss of the organization? And that he actually is behind all these murders - including manipulating the fake culprits into believing it for themselves? And his only goal and motivation is just murdering for the sake of it. They want to revive the death? Because then he can murder them again and again. They want eternal youth? Because then he can murder them for all eternity.
He also came up with that whole Conan plot himself because as an innocent looking child it's so much easier to stay completely under the radar. No one can be that gullible, that child has to be the incarnate of killing.

They should. But since this is 'Infinitive Loop - The Manga', everyone's brains and memories get's immediately reset on stand alone cases, so that they can experience yet another closed room murder for their first time.

Heck, at this point I've accept even this. Just give me some conclusion to this horrible loop manga.
Speaking of Karasuma. I've tried googling him and while you are right, that there was a story about him and a golden house. However we see him only as a shadowy figure. Did he not make an appearance in the arc where you said he acted like a clueless idiot? I'm kinda confused why there's not to many images out there if there was an actual case involving him.
However we see him only as a shadowy figure. Did he not make an appearance in the arc where you said he acted like a clueless idiot?
No, there's only one image as shadowy figure in that case. He only appears in the backstory.
However, the more I think about the little we have about him, the more incompetent he looks. Aside from being an idiot, he also has absolutely no leadership skills at all. A decent leader would go for charisma and motivation instead for terror and intimidation. Besides, he was a multi-Billionaire. A few billions for whoever solves this shit should also be way more sufficient than just murdering everything in plain sight.

I know I'm comparing apples and oranges, they're still juicy fruits. Flexible comedy manga and mystery romcom manga. Gintama starts with comedy and goes wherever it feels like going, the characters could reset or advance the plot. Conan usually gives you a page of plot before starting the whodunnit case that you and many others find pointless, irrelevant, and repetitive before ending with a page that continues the plot. I wish I looked into Kindaichi to have a possibly better comparison, but I know a lot more about Gintama and I once recognized a pattern that made my eyes roll while I was eagerly waiting for something to continue the Takasugi stuff. Always started as a comedy, and wherever route it went I used to expect a profound lesson to be preached at the end, or seeing the "good and bad guys" put their backs to each to each other and sharing words before a heroic moment. Conan is insanely more repetitive with its formula and for a more girthy amount of time. Every series has their formula so I guess it depends on how tolerant you are or what you're looking for. Or maybe it's just identifying a mismatch between you and the author.

Now that I think about it, I'm definitely overlapping some thoughts with Gintama where it's expected to have multiple out-of-season stories. I'm impressed if the no-repeat is true, I'll have to check!

I see. Thanks for clearing that up.
Speaking of him respectively the idea of a boss. I mean I know it's an organization so of course there needs to be someone in control. But with how things have been handled so far I really wonder if we need one because up till now Gin has absolutely been a beast. Yes, the number of named members has increased over the years and while I wouldn't call them outright useless, they absolutely pale in comparison to Gin. That dude see's through everything and has always been the most dangerous aspect about the entire organization. Whenever a plan of the good guy backfires or things go south it's because Gin see's through things. I really wonder how this guy has no ambitions of his own, so for him to follow someone, that boss has literally to be a big boss (shameless MGS reference here). But even if we justify having a boss because this is an organization and Gin seems to be an amazing right hand man, then I wonder if we really actually need Rum. Like can this guy actually do something that lives up to the hype that puts him above Gin. Because so far he didn't.

I'd say it's not just a mismatch between ME and him. Judging by which characters are popular amongst the fans it really appears that nobody gives much of a damn about the kids anymore. The kids that grew up reading/watching Conan now are more interested in the pretty boys and girls and care more who's going to bang whom in this series. If the author really want's to continue milking the story it could easily be done by finishing the main plotline and then having the story continue with actual Shinichi. People would still read it for Amuro, Kaito Kid, Heiji and Shinichi.
Now that I think about it, I'm definitely overlapping some thoughts with Gintama where it's expected to have multiple out-of-season stories. I'm impressed if the no-repeat is true, I'll have to check!
It shouldn't be. Hanami appeared more than one time. And valentine's day also.
chapter 1000+ spoilers
! What I really don't get: Seriously, who the fuck is that Koji Haneda dude? What's the deal with him? Why did he manage to find out the boss's identity? Is there something special about him or is it sheer luck and plot convenience that he knew and could give the hint in his dying message?
His story is still incomplete. May another 100 chapters later we will get it.

Yet another example of terrible writing. As I said previously, supposedly all the elements for the main plot have been introduced over a decade ago. But then after almost 950 chapters this dude gets written into the story as if he's gotten a big lead on the entire organization in the past which is why he was killed. At first I thought it's someone I've forgotten (because of the problems I've talked about endlessly here) but then I found out that "nope, we just introduced this guy into the story".
The new Wild Policy Story episode just aired, it's the third one so far. I've never read the spinoff manga so I don't know how faithful it is, but I've been really digging it and I recommend it if you've wanted a different flavor in Conan universe and don't mind the unrealistic stuff that tends to happen in the movies. Each episode has been character-focused but I noticed there's some suspense being built up with Hiromitsu so I'm looking forward to that.
If you have crunchyroll, it's right here https://www.crunchyroll.com/case-closed-detective-conan/episode-1042-police-academy-arc-wild-police-story-case-hagiwara-kenji-843087
God i'm up to volume 78 now and the whole thing is just a never ending stream of organization stuff. Yes i get it, the obviously shady guy wasn't shady and the nice guy was actually evil all along. I can only hope that the next volume will be back to normal again

You and Ivotas are such polar opposite in that manga.
Btw who is your favorite side character? The thief?
You and Ivotas are such polar opposite in that manga.
Not necessarily. I never said the Black Organization stuff hasn't been going on for too long. I just want to see it getting resolved. But no, we keep introducing more characters to the main plotline eventhough the author said that everybody was introduced over a decade ago. Shit like this happens if you keep milking the status quo. Just friggin end the main plotline, have the BO be defeated and have Shinichi revert to a teenager permanently. You can still continue the story that way. Dragonball also didn't stup bein popular once Goku wasn't a little kid anymore. The readers don't care for the kids anyways.
I mean once you resolve the official plot you have to wrap up the story. Its like quantum leap. You can have him get back him go go back to his and go screw it lets just continue body hopping. You need to keep the official goal around as part of the framework of the episodic show.
If this was any other story I would agree with you. But we're talking about a series where the author gives absolutely zero fucks neither about actually moving the story forward nor about the infinite loop the case formula seems to be stuck in. If a continuation after the conclusion of the BO plotline makes sense or not should be the least of his worries.
Especially since the readers here in Japam are vastly (young) adults now who only seem to care about who's fucking with whom anyways. Focusing on Shinichi wouldn't bother anyone if we're honest about it.
You and Ivotas are such polar opposite in that manga.
Btw who is your favorite side character? The thief?
Every forum needs an Ivotas and a wolfwood to maintain the balance.
I dunno who is my absolute favorite but i like the doc, the police chief, kaito kid and the kansai rival guy.
Worst part about these last three volumes is that the translator is now using the Japanese names and i'm way lost. Dudes mom was taking about Shin-chan for like four pages before i realized she was talking about Conan. The last twenty or so volumes are gonna be rough on that metric alone.
Err, how is Shin-chan a new translation? His name was always Shinichi from the get go. That never changed.
You mean Jimmy Kudo. Nah but i've grown up with and up to volume 75 read with the English names like Richard Moore, Rachel, Serena, Harley etc etc. So it's super weird for me to try and attach these well known faces to like Kogoro or Shinichi or what have you. Messes with my enjoyment to some degree
Wait what? Where is he called Jimmy Kudo? O.o
In the English adaption all the characters have anglified names. So i literally had no idea who Shinichi was up until i caught up to the movies and had to start watching subs. And now i caught up to the manga and nothing makes sense to me anymore. When his mom was talking about how Shin-chan had a plan i was scrambling to think of which FBI guy that could be before it clicked lol.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
An example of what i grew up watching.
Oh yeah. Why is Conan living with that family again? Did they just adopt him? Or is he like Conan little cousin he just dumped on his not girlfriend for more than a year?
I think the cover story was that he was the docs relative and Moore was lured into lodging him because they dangled a bunch of cash for expenses in front of him

I was surprised to hear this so I checked, but I couldn't find it. Viz has been pretty consistent with keeping the anglified names and preserving every new name after Funimation's time. I'm guessing they're scans?
Yeah it looks like grainy scans from the Japanese magazines. I thought it was because Viz hadn't caught up. But you're telling me i could still be reading glorious Jimmy Kudo stories instead of this Shinichi stuff? This is wonderful news

Urgh, just reading this gives me some serious Vietnam flashbacks of the time I read the German version of One Piece. From the top of my head I remember Dorry and Broggy being called Boogie and Woogie.
Ha! Boogie and Woogie is how i will exclusively refer to them from now on.
Figured that would be something you'd enjoy. Feel free to refer to Laboon as La Boom too if you like.
I'm a bit ashamed to admit it, but I actually prefer Lysop over Ussop. Just has a nice ring to it.
Lysop took me a long while to get over too. It's also not one that's a bad name as it's literally the same meaning it has in the original.
Nothing will ever be as bad as having to stomach Zolo in the official English version.
Well, Luffy is translated to Ruffy (with English pronounciation) in German, which is pretty similar to the Zoro/Zolo thing.
The German translators did a lot of random renaming early on, along with some very questionable translation choices. Things got a lot better around Volume 45 or Volume 50 or so, when the translators changed. I've actually been very happy with the German manga since then, I usually enjoy things way more once I read the German volumes then when I initially read the English scanlations. Part of it is reading multiple chapters at once instead of one chapter weekly, of course, but I think reading (or hearing) something in your native language can affect you differently or more strongly if done well. But maybe that's just me.
Back to topic: translating the Japanes names in Detective Conan into English really doesn't work for me, simply because the story is so clearly taking place in Japan (as opposed to something like One Piece, which takes place in a fantasy world). Using very American names like Jimmy and Rachel, Richard Moore etc. to refer to clearly Japanese people living in Tokio is just too weird. It's like if you dubbed a tv show taking place at an American high school into German and renamed the main characters into Hans and Erika.
I'm a bit ashamed to admit it, but I actually prefer Lysop over Ussop. Just has a nice ring to it.
That's actually a good and reasonable change, as it's made in order to preserve to lie pun.
Same why I prefer Bunny Tsukino over Usagi Tsukino.
Hiruluk to Doc Bader on the other hand, I just don't get it.

Haven't read that far anymore. It was around Water 7 when I got into actually looking around for better translations because Carlsen just seemed to be inconsistent with the story. I still checked the first W7 volume after being interested in how it will be handled in Germen. When I read "Ecki Zugluft" I dropped the volume and never looked back.

I feel exactly the same. OP is a fantastic world. In Conan we clearly have Japanese people in Japan. Also Jimmy Kudo is even more ridiculous as it even keeps the original Japanese family name. Plus the original namings make the BO codenames stick out more because whereas everyone has Japanese names the BO have English sounding codenames.
Hiruluk to Doc Bader on the other hand, I just don't get it.
That's because Hiruruk is how Japanese would try to phonetically pronounce the German term Chirurg. I guess the German translators didn't want to go with Dr. Chirurg (which means Dr. Surgeon in English in case non-German speakers were wondering). Still kind of weird to go with Bader instead. As far as the worst name is concerned it would have to be Unicon for Laugh Tale. Even when it was Raftel that one just seemed utterly brainless.
Funny enough i always thought it was such a good fit for Americanization because the whole thing is so universal. I mean sure as an adult i could see that maybe there are a bit more ancient Japanese houses and flip flops than you would expect from an american show, but for the most part they just go to weird places that could be virtually anywhere. Like is this big ass amusement park inherently Japanese? This gothic stone castle some dong got killed in? This beach resort hotel that could be anywhere betwenn Hawai and and Spain. And all these woodland murders taking place in what could just as well be north Sweden.
It's like if you dubbed a tv show taking place at an American high school into German and renamed the main characters into Hans and Erika.
I would so watch saved by the bell with Hans and Erika. Imagine the limitless possibilities, you'd get to know what is like the German equivilent of a valley girl by which accent would be chosen for her.

Totally understandable. Whenever I re-read the manga, getting through the first 30-40 volumes or so is pretty rough. The original translator really sucked. Lots of mistakes, mistranslations. She often left out information, simplified the dialogue and also made every single character sound like a braindead twelve year-old. It's really not well-done. Thankfully, it really has become a lot better since, but the damage is done.
Since we are on the topic of dubs, translations etc., I really like the German dub of Detective Conan. It's a good example of how to keep the style and flavor of the original intact while also adding some little touches that make the show more accessible and more natural and real, for the dub audience. Like Ran always calling her father "Paps" or Kogoro calling her "Mausebein". It gives the series some extra charm and personality for me in German that I actually kinda miss when I just read the manga or watch it in Japanese with subtitles.
Regarding the problems with the story not going anywhere for years now and nothing getting resolved, I kinda stopped caring. I still enjoy reading, but it's the kind of mild entertainment you get when you watch an episode of Monk or C.S.I Miami or whatever. I'm not really invested in the story enough anymore to really care about getting a resolution or spend much time thinking about it otherwise. My excitement does rise a bit whenever we get a reprieve from those boring old "three suspects" cases. Those have gotten so tired and clichè by now that I have to force myself to not just skip through them most of the time.
Urgh, just reading this gives me some serious Vietnam flashbacks of the time I read the German version of One Piece. From the top of my head I remember Dorry and Broggy being called Boogie and Woogie.
Boogie woogie? That's awesome!!!
Just a quick reminder that Daz Bones' name in the German version is Jazz Boner
You Germans are killing it in the dub department.
Pushed myself to get thru the darkest nightmare movie. Too many alcohols, not nearly enough Moore. Hopefully the next one is better suited to my tastes
@Ivotas said in Detective Conan (Case Closed):
up till now Gin has absolutely been a beast
Speaking of Gin, did we actually learn anything at all about his life outside of the organization? Like did Conan or the fucking FBI actually do anything, anything at all to track him down and gather some useful information?
I mean we have enough reference points where they could start the investigation - like his love for old cars like his Porsche. Not saying that it'll be easy or not dangerous, given his careful persona, but at least they should try something, shouldn't they?
Just imagine Gin having a child somewhere from a long time ago, whom he actually genuinely cares for and therefore did cut off the contact entirely.
Howsoever, what do you think is the deal with his past life? My guess is he comes from some wealthy background, but then suffered affluenza big time, lacking any purpose and meaning in life, resulting in happily taking the offer of the organization to use him for whatever they need him.
I'm halfway into volume 83 and i can't even remember when we had a straight Richard solves the case case last. The big sister character who everyone thinks is a dude keeps horning in on the action and she does nothing for me. Bring in the kansai guy at least, or the doc. Hell i'd rather take some more organization bullshit. But then again she'll probably end up being FBI, or the organization. Or both. Probably both huh
Pretty excited about the last episode of Wild Police Story airing soon!
I didn't do my research but I really wasn't expecting each episode to get so spread out this year
In the meantime I've been enjoying the small spurts of Hanzawa anime every week to whet the appetite. Manga resuming in a few weeks.
I watch Zero's Tea Time. And it was really worth the watch. The episode with Camel and Rei at the cafe was really good and funny. I have to say that I like that recently that after every 4-5 episodes of filler episode, we're getting canon cases. It's a lot better then what it was a couple years ago, which is understandable due to the pandemic and Aoyama being sick.
I only saw the first episode of Tea Time so far but I should marathon the rest soon. I thought it was just a chill series but I'm glad to hear your recommendation!
They're also rescreening Movie 25 in Japan because of the timing of Halloween, and it looks like it just beat out Movie 23:
Movie 25: The Bride of Halloween reached 9.45 Billion Yen, surpassing the revenue of Movie 23: Fist of the Blue Sapphire as of 8:03 PM (JST) today, becoming the highest grossing film of Detective Conan.
