If anything we should have said the same about Wills role in Aladdin. Shudders
And not the guy who played Aladdin?

I've got a real soft spot for Robin Williams and his work. I guess I feel it's pretty tasteless to resume one of his former roles knowing it was going to be another Disney remake flop.
Will Smith just resigned from the Academy.
I'm sure some will be happy. I think its a shame.
Something was going to happen one way or the other.
That being said do wonder what the Academy does from here on out in light of those conflicting reports.
Will Smith was great as the genie and the Aladdin is the only good live action remake.
shakes head It's all sad.
But Daniel Radcliffe said recently that he's bored of all of it, and I agree. There are far more important things to worry about in the world right now, let's just hope Will and Chris resolve things peacefully.
Well, he reacted violently to a joke
Well…whatever camp you're in, at least we can agree fans have milked this drama for every drop.
I'm sure some will be happy. I think its a shame.
Well it means very little, though. He can't vote any more? That's about it?
The 2023 nominees are up.
https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2023
Of the Best Picture nominees, I've seen four of them and I'd say Banshees of Inisherin is objectively the best. And considering all the other nominations it's gotten, it may actually win.
Would be cool if Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett got their respective Acting wins.
I would love it if Glass Onion won Best Adapted Screenplay.
For the first time in a while, I'd say the Best Animated Feature win is kind of a toss-up. Personally, I'd give it to Puss in Boots, but Turning Red, Pinocchio, and Marcel could also win (still need to see Marcel myself). Alos, LOL at Strange World and Lightyear not getting nominated.
Also, if possible, maybe we can just change the thread title to Academy Awards.
@Nobodyman said in Academy Awards:
Also, if possible, maybe we can just change the thread title to Academy Awards.
Done!
Michelle Yeoh's probably got a slightly uphill battle for Best Actress since Cate Blanchett feels like a clear but not overwhelming favorite. EEAAO leading all films with 11 nominations is pretty incredible, especially since it somehow wasn't nominated for visual effects.
It also looks like a pretty good showing for Netflix. Don't know how many awards they'll actually get but loads of noms for All Quiet on the Western Front plus a nomination for The Sea Beast (over Lightyear, etc.) is already quite validating.
I'm so happy that Stephanie Hsu got her Supporting Actress nomination, especially considering how baffling it was that A24 were pushing that spot for Jamie Lee Curtis throughout the awards circuit, despite the fact that her character didn't really factor all that much in EEAAO, whereas Stephanie Hsu's Joy is literally the 2nd most important character in the whole movie.
While I'd love to see Hsu get the award, I still think Angela Bassett is winning this one.
Nope not even getting a single nomination is complete bullshit. I suppose that's fitting for the Academy awards, which I will, once again, not be watching. I hope they miss my .001 cent of ad revenue.
Oscars reveal new diversity requirements for best picture nominees
Not News, but finally, what everyone was waiting for !
Not that I really care. I haven't been paying attention to films just because they got an award for a while now.
It would be great if Ruben Östlund wins awards with a satirical movie about this kind of stuff.
Saw All Quiet on the Western Front and Elvis over the weekend.
One thing I can say about AQotWF is that it's got a really good English dub. Like, it actually took me a little while to realize the lip flaps didn't always match. Anyway, it's a good update, but it's a shame it leaves out the reintegration aspect of the novel and 1930 movie. In any case, it'll win Best Foreign Film, so there's that.
I ended up liking Elvis more than I thought I would. I'm not super familiar with Baz Luhrmann's movies, but based on this and Romeo + Juliet, he seems to have a very bombastic style to filmmaking, which can be a bit overwhelming. Austin Butler, however, was amazing and I wouldn't be suprised if he took home Best Actor. Tom Hanks though, I'm still not entirely sure what accent he was trying to pull off.
Watched The Fabelmans. Only Steven Spielberg can make an autobiographical family drama movie about movies absolutely riveting.
Not riveting enough to put asses in seats apparently.
Not all great films get the audience they deserve.
It's really cool to see Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan get nominated, you don't see enough Asian actors and actresses getting nominated
Saw Tár and Triangle of Sadness
Tár - Very gripping character movie. And yeah, Blanchett was fantastic. If she wins the Oscar, it's well deserved.
Triangle of Sadness - Knew basically nothing about this movie going in. The only thing that really interested me was that Woody Harrelson was in it. So yeah, was not prepared for this movie to go totally off the rails halfway through. Definitely on the nose in its message, but I still had a good time and it got some genuine laughs out of me.
Caught Women Talking and Fabelmans last night and, interestingly, I watched them back-to-back at a theater, which I don't think I've ever done before.
Women Talking - Knowing nothing of the plot before hand, I honestly this was a historical drama going in (though I guess it could still be historical depending on how loose your definition of that is). But yeah, this is good. Some great writing and performances really holds it together.
Fabelmans - Spielberg's pseudo-autobiographical movie and, I think, one of his best in recent years. Just a wonderful love letter to the movies. And hey, I learned something about horizons in film-making.
And with that I've seen all the movies nominated for Best Picture. In terms of overall quality, I would rank them thusly.
So I think it's kind of a toss-up between Banshees and EEAaO as to who will win, but, of course, the Academy could surprise me.
Animation fights a never-ending battle for recognition. Which is one of the sadder things in media.
And Disney's domination of Best Music in the 90s is all Alan Menken (save Lion King). So bow to the Grand Lord of Disney Music.
So who do we think will win best picture? And who deserves to win?
@Shiebs
Having seen all of them, and from I know about the Academy, I'd say EEAAO, Banshees, and Fabelmans are the only real contenders for best picture. But, of course, the Academy could always surprise me.
Anyway, Oscars are just about to start now.
Ooh, doing Animated Feature right off the bat.
Yes, animated films are the essence of film-making, which is why none of them were nominated for any other categories.
Pinocchio wins! I still prefer Puss in Boots, but yeah, that tracks.
Yay! Ke Huy Quan wins!
Dang. Quan's getting super emotional, but I can't say I blame him. Bet he's glad he got back into acting now.
Jamie Lee Curtis? Eh. Should've gone to Bassett.
Well at this rate EEAAO may actually sweep the awards.
Best Documentary? Eh, the only one I managed to see was Navalny, which was damn good.
Well, there ya go.
Well, at least Ireland got one win this year, cause now I'm not so sure about Banshees.
"Disney created a truly beautiful and original story, and we are so proud to be taking part in shitting all over that with an unnecessary remake."
Jaimie has a 50 year career and is unlikely to ever be nominated again since she doesn't do the sort of movies that get nominated. Stephanie probably deserved it more but she just started 5 years ago.
And Bassett consistently does award bait roles, she's won lots of other awards and has been nominated for Oscars before and will be again.
Think of it as an honorary award for Fish Called Wanda if that helps.
Jamie Lee Curtis winning Best Supporting Actress?
Ugh.
Look, I loved Everything Everywhere All At Once, but Jamie Lee Curtis was by far the weakest part of the movie as her character didn't factor all that much to the story, unlike Stephanie Hsu who was basically the 2nd most important character in the film.
REALLY bad call here.
Yeah, that's pretty much the only thing I can figure that they just wanted to give Curtis an award while they still could. Oh well.
Oh hey Morgan. Where have you been? We'd really love to see you in more movies.
Well at least Black Panther won something.
If Naatu Naatu doesn't win I swear to god...
Eh, I feel like I remember pretty much every single scene Curtis was in really clearly while I can't really say the same for Bassett or Hsu. Part of that is a function of her having a smaller role but I've seen a lot of films with similar cameos that didn't stick with me the way Curtis's role did.
It didn't help either that a lot of Bassett's best moments were heavily promoted in trailers before the film released so I really can't tell if I remember those scenes for the film or because I saw them before pretty much every new film I saw in the past year before Wakanda Forever was released.
All Quiet wins best foreign film. Gee, who could've guessed?
Huh, interesting. I saw Elephant Whisperers and Martha Mitchell Effect. I would've given it to MME.
Yeah, I really wanna see The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and the Horse.
And there's another win for All Quiet. How many times are we going to have to hear that score?
And of course All Quiet was going to win best score. Ironically, All Quiet is being anything but quiet.
Okay, does All Quiet have enough awards now? Can we move on?
LOL, Cocaine Bear cameo.
Uh, is Elizabeth Banks okay? Did she throw out her voice?
A win for Avatar. Fine, as long as it didn't go to All Quiet.
I guess I can't be too mad if they give it to Lift Me Up, but...Naatu Naatu still deserves it.
James Hong. Speaking of people who are long overdue for an Oscar...
EEAAO wins best screenplay. Yeah, pretty sure it's getting the BP win.
Women Talking? Hmm, unexpected, but okay. Was really pulling for Glass Onion.
Enjoy it Top Gun, that's the only award you're winning.
Naatu Naatu wins. All is right with the world.
Another win for EEAAO. Man, Banshees ain't gonna get shit this year.
Okay, yeah, no question at all EEAAO is winning BP.
Huh, Brendan Fraser wins. Really though it would be Austin Butler. Guess I should see The Whale at some point.
Go Michelle Yeoh! Blanchett's got enough Oscars anywyay.
Great. Now give BP to Elvis just to screw with everyone.
Hey Harrison. Can't wait to see you in Indy 5 this year.
And there you have it. The movie where a guy shoves a dildo up his butt to shift dimensions wins Best Picture. I call that a win.
Still, wish Banshees had gotten at least one award, cause it is a really damn great movie.
Also feel like Fabelmans maybe should've got something, but...eh, Spielberg's already got enough awards and recognition.
In before some dickhead complains about Top Gun getting screwed by the movie with the Asians or some other tone deaf diatribe.
Good for EEAAO, and for Asian Representation in general
It's Asian Kick-Ass Night!!
@Robby Movies are magic.
The Academy definitely nailed it this year (for the most part). Though, granted, after the last two years, even a passable ceremony would've felt like a godsend.
Now I need to rewatch Temple of Doom and The Goonies.
I love adore and cherish Jamie Lee Curtis. Her One Piece love alone makes me a forever stan.
Her Oscar win wasn't it though. BSA was loaded this year and many great performances got snubbed along the way (Janelle Monae deserved a nomination at minimum) -- and she wasn't even the best performance by a supporting actress in her own movie (I still think about Jobu Tupaki daily) -- happy for her. That speech was one for the ages. But it feels like a courtesy win during a year with such a strong field.
Haha ... Curtisy win
cate lost...
Brendan Fraser gave such a sweet speech:
https://movieweb.com/brendan-fraser-wins-best-actor-oscar-at-the-95th-academy-awards/?utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_campaign=EchoBox-MW&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR28I2ARuJ0x9jNYiNKMb-cO_pPerAY9Mp755Y-iD0IDP9xJabWuBNZK624#Echobox=1678679122
And he mentioned the Multi-verse, so give him a MCU role now.
Well, it's that time again. The 96th Annual Academy Awards are upon us and the Academy just release their nominations for the year. You can see them all here https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2024
As usual, 10 films have been nominated for Best Picture, of which I have only seen three, so now begins my mad dash to see the remaining 7 before the ceremony. Although I think it's fairly safe to say that Oppenheimer will get the win and pick up a few other categories to finally give Nolan his due. But then they could always surprise us.
That said, Cillian Murphy is pretty much a shoe-in for Best Actor. And RDJ for that matter (though Ryan Gosling winning would be pretty cool).
Best Actress seems like a toss-up between Lily Gladstone and Emma Stone, and I have no clue about Best Supporting Actress. I guess America winning would be cool.
Best Animated Film has some great contenders (I'll have to check out Robot Dreams), but it's also pretty much toss-up between Spider-Man and Boy and the Heron. Personally I'd give it to Spider-Man as I think Heron was one of Miyazaki's weaker movies, but the Academy loves Miyazaki and hates sequels, so they'll probably give it to him. Who knows, maybe he'll actually show up this time.
Godzilla Minus One was my personal favorite movie of the year, so it's really cool that it got nominated, if only for Visual Effects. It really would've been cool if they had nominated it for best International Feature, but...I understand why they didn't. Not like it would've beaten Zone of Interest anyway.
Speaking of which, the Academy once again removes any tension that category may have had by also nominating Zone of Interest for Best Picture, meaning it's automatically going to win.
As far as Scores go, it's honestly just kind of surreal seeing Dial of Destiny get nominated for anything. But that's John Williams for ya.
Barbie got two songs nominations so, yeah, it'll probably go to one of them. Incidentally, Billie Eilish is killing it with movie songs lately.
Wes Anderson pretty much has to win Best Short Film, right?
And that's pretty much it on my end. No big surprises and the Academy continues to snub animated films from being nominated in any other categories. Perhaps some day.
The awards will be held on March 10th and Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting again (whatever).
I'm just cackling at the fact that, on Disney's 100th Anniversary no less, Wish got snubbed for Best Animated Feature, while Nimona, the film Disney tried to erase because of its LGBTQ+ themes, gets nominated instead.
Realistically, it's basically a 2 horse race between Across the Spider-Verse & The Boy and the Heron, but the fact that Nimona managed to get a nomination is a win in and of itself!
Was Leonardo DiCaprio not nominated!?
