Characters from One Piece that don't necessarily have prominent roles, and might not be casually brought up in conversations by most people, but are still ones that you feel inclined to bring up for one reason or another. One for me would be Paulie, he's probably one of the best examples of such a character for the supportive role he played and was just a cool dude all around.

Duval will always have a special place in my heart for giving us the best joke in the manga.

Agreed. His mask was also cool, and wish he still wore it, but I suppose his winking joke is a good enough replacement for that.
-
After the legion of Paulie fans there's the Wiper movement.
What a cool character that was as strong as any other strawhat at the time and/or had as much willpower that would've been a great addition to the story if he wasn't solely focused on protecting his ppl, their holy land, and taking down Enel.
Also Gin shouldn't be mentioned at all in this thread despite his amazing contributions in the Baratie arc cuz obviously he will return to be a major character in the story. Obviously.
-
Of course I'd also have to mention Patty. Such a funny bastard he was.

I will always remember Yosaku & Johnny with fondness. Back then I even thought they'd join the crew as minor companions (destined to be ship guards or just part of a then-expected large crew of minor characters that would be the mook crew of the SHs).

Yeah, they were an amusing bunch of supporting characters that gave off a brotherly attitude and added levity where needed. Also cool how they respected Zoro not just for his strength, because they didn't abandon Zoro after he lost to Mihawk.

I've alway been fond of Conis. She was prominent her arc and had some good moments, just a pleasant character all around. Wish we coulda seen her fight with that bazooka and her dials, woulda have been interesting and made for better nakamate teasing.

I'm probably the only guy here who thinks Dalton is awesome.

I think he's a good example of a subtly quirky character, who's relatively laid back and not overly comedic, but still has his quirk like giving out trivial info in tense situations.
-
The guy who asked where Roger hid his treasure, he's the one that started it all.
Wonder what the WG did to him..
-
I think Oda missed something with Koza. He should have made him as strong as Wiper. Anyway, it's probably my favorite "side" character.

lol, I can only imagine.
I mean, even though it's anime only. This guy became a meme

I really like the mentions here. Personally I somehow find Koza, Wiper and Paulie to be somehow be similar in a good guy who at some point seems to be a hinderance to the protagonists kind of type. Definitely happy to see them mentioned here. Also happy to see Dalton mentioned. Also I like icecream!
-
The supporting casts of Water 7 and Drum are my favourites. They all felt like they were instrumental to their respective arcs without being in the way or wasting scenes. There's no character I disliked. Paulie is definitely the MVP, he could've been a main character if he wanted to, but honestly everyone in those arcs were great: Iceburg, the Franky Family, Kureha, Dalton, the lumberjacks… love them all. Also the giants from Little Garden, they were both fun. And Duval!
Then there's a whole bunch of characters I really like but they don't quite match up to the above, like Wyper or Lola.
And I gotta give a shoutout to Bartolomeo, he was the real standout of Dressrosa. Chiffon and Pedro were also memorable.

He's the Tianamen Square Guy of the OP world.

Will only accept old lady who was too tired to run with her Grandaughter getting hyped up after King Riku's speech and starts sprinting like an Olympian.

Ah, you mean Detamaruka?

Speaking of which, there's also Yu, who helped showcase that Smoker isn't such a bad guy.
-
I'm fond of the lumber shop guy who gave supplies and food to Usopp before the Aqualaguna. He looks funny and seems nice.

Its funny, if all were on one crew I could picture the three of them to be as volatile with each other as Sanji and Zoro.

Yeah, if somehow from Skypiea had to join, I could have seen it either being Wyper or Raki. I think it would have been interesting if either had come along.

for some reason I really like Baby 5. I'm glad she has married Sai and now has more chances to appear in the main series. Cool power, sad backstory, fliud fight scenes in PH and Dresrossa…she did a lot with a small window.
Also, Mont-d'Or. I reeeeeally like his book powers, and thought he really put effort trying to control the situation back in WCI. Wish Oda gave him a mini-boss status, kek.

Yeah, such as passionate lady with the potential to cause mass destruction.

The 2 train station guys in Water 7. They were absolutely hilarious and memorable to me.
Johnny and Yosaku. For being the only bounty hunters we have ever seen in Canon. They also had the balls to go up against Fishmen. And they had a pretty neat relationship with zoro as fellow bounty hunters.
Iceberg was also pretty cool. wink wink
I also enjoyed Gats and his biased commentary.
Lastly, he is always forgotten, but Kohza played a really pivotal role in Alabasta. Without him, Crocodile's whole plan wouldn't happen. He also had the guts to go up against Cobra. In contrast no one in dressrosa could do what he did.

LOL for an animal/character with barely any dialogue. That Bird had a lot of character.
One of the reasons I will never mind Oda's fascination with including animals in every single arc of his story.

Yeah, Oda tries to find the quirky in everything as much as possible, including animals: Chouchou, Surume, Gonbe, Pierre, Karoo, etc.

To hell with those two guys. I'm not even sure if they were in the manga but if they were than only a little, making them only rudimentary Oda characters. Every wannabe comedic scene they were in was anime only.

I kid you not when I'm saying that Carue/Karoo is what got me into One Piece in the first place.

I love random pirates that help flesh out the age of pirates. I.E. Candy pirates, tulip pirates, germ pirates(poor timing on that one), big helmet pirates, pinkbeard, crab-hand gyro, gashed albion, lip service doughty etc. The more pirates the more I enjoy the series.
-
I genuinely have a fascination for those random, gimmicky pirate crews Oda inserts in his cover stories, just to have them beaten badly in the next 1 or 2 chapters.
Speaking of which, it's been a long time since the last cover story. It's already been close to 40 chapters of color spreads and cover requests.

Yeah, like Seamars and his space pirate associates.

Makes me think about the future of OnePiece

partly it's because I'm such a W7/EL head, but Iceburg is probably my favorite supporting character overall. He's subtly odd, gets his fair share of drama and pathos, feels integral and not incidental to the plot of the arc(s). In that way he's narratively and emotionally set against Franky, as a weird blood-brother, and that's something I think is one of Oda's great successes in character storytelling (I will never fail to tear up reading their conversation before Franky boards the Sunny).

Yeah, Iceburg is one of the better "casual" characters alongside Paulie.
