Hm. If there’s no announcement today, next week is unlikely. Probably gonna be a two month break, huh? Bummer.

By the way, the voyage special feature was just a dumb series of silly questions that they made all the straw hats answer. The last question was to just name all the straw hats. Only three of the cast could name all the main characters. Yikes.
-
what do you want to bet that it took the cast of DBZ less than 14 years to learn all the members of the "Z Fighters" not to mention villains and side characters?
-
Eh, that’s not really a big deal. Like I am obsessed with this series but on multiple occasions I have momentarily forgotten to name straw hats because there really are just a lot of em. They obviously know the main cast.
-
Yeah, I don’t blame some of them. I do wish they asked real questions about the dubbing process instead of very stupid and silly joke questions all the time.
-
Catching up on the end of last set. Man, these episodes seem to cover less than half a chapter. Brutally slow with all the townsfolk and allies filler. Also, what the fuck: Fujitora can’t stop the birdcage, an extension of a single Shichibukai’s devil fruit while they’re weak and fighting elsewhere? And Zoro doesn’t even try to cut it? This arc is so f***ing dumb. Oda could’ve at least preoccupied Fujitora and had Zoro cut the strings only for them to regenerate. Such an easy plot hole to fill that’s otherwise glaring stupid…
At the beginning of this arc in the dub, I had started to forget why I hated it. The back half has reminded me.
Will run out of episodes if the new set doesn’t drop in the first week of October. Here’s hoping.
-
Also, Bartos barriers can’t stop it… the whole point is that they’re indestructible. Took a king punch and didn’t budge an inch.
-
Thats why im patiently waiting for the next batch of episodes to drop before i binge my way through the birdcage half of Dressrosa ,because thats when the episode really started to drag.
-
Kyle hosted a twitter space today and I got to talk to him briefly. It was about… the mario movie cast so I didn’t get a chance to ask any one piece questions but mildly interesting! I think! Maybe!
-
He’s dubbing TWEWY now. Probably safe to say he’s not working on OP. Got a feeling this new season of simuldubs has slowed them down even more; such a bummer they can’t keep up the one per month schedule to catch up. Getting anxious for the next batch.
-
Kyle like, has barely directed the show anyways. Doubt what he’s currently working on changes much.
-
The job of the actors is too voice act. They work on multiple projects. I don't blame them if they don't remember many facts of the series.
-
Yes, but it sounds kind of insincere when they say they love the franchise but can’t even name the main cast.
-
It’s possible they just think of them as the actors. Happens all the time in theatre. Or the choreographer for a musical who spends days upon days blocking and rehearsing a song but they don’t even know the words to it. There’s precedent.
-
No OP set again this week. Damn. Last set was 8/17, so we’re probably looking at 7-8 weeks. Wonder if the different roles in this set made recording a little slower. Not sure who they’re trying to get for Kaido.
-
maybe the real voyage 9 was the friends we made along the way

Other than the bad pacing, what was so terrible about this arc? Doflamingo was one of the best villains in the series, and the rest of the arc put the spotlight on Luffy’s new grand fleet. I thought most people enjoyed this arc.
-
The pacing is the main thing. But also nonstop fighting, little plot, and hard disagree that DoFlamingo was one of the best villains. His backstory is “I’ve been evil since birth, and I want to murder everyone,” and his brilliant plan during this arc was, “Let’s distract Luffy with a fighting tournament” and “Let’s murder everyone with an extremely slowly closing cage.” He had the potential to be one of the best villains—but I think most people had high expectations that he’d have more clever and purposeful plotting/maneuvering and better motivations than he did. I wish the arc’s plotting was more clever, less straightforward and predictable (Luffy/co will get fruit, then they’ll fight their way to Doffy and beat him; birdcage is closing but won’t hurt anyone; etc.). Add to this a number of smaller grievances (Zoro can’t cut string, Fujitora can’t stop the birdcage, and Sabo can’t help Luffy fight Doffy), not to mention the blatant sexism in the Franky fight. Did I mention this arc was nonstop fighting?
It has its high moments—Sabo’s introduction, Sugar vs Usopp, Law’s flashback, gear four, Bart & cabbage. But those are really only moments when you look at how long the arc is—over 100 chapters and episodes. Like I said, the complaints are mostly about the pacing. If he trimmed the fighting and made the arc 40 episodes, it would be a great arc.

I can agree a little that Doflamingo’s plan had some flaws, but I think you misunderstand his backstory. He grew up as a Celestial Dragon and had so much control, and when his father took that away and he could never go back, he decided to take his revenge on the whole world. It traumatized him and he basically went insane, unlike Cora who was able to cope. He was like a perfect antithesis to Luffy, someone who thought they were better than everyone else, like a Celestial Dragon but more powerful.
-
You’re too kind. DoFlamingo was rotten from the start. They don’t show him changing from good to evil with the move and loss of riches. He just goes from evil to more evil. It really isn’t an arc. And “murder everyone in the world” as revenge for some specific wrong that was done to you is so absurdly bad writing as a motivation and goal. I remember laughing at the corny line where he talks about getting revenge on the whole world (the lines where belamy is at his feet).
-
I mean, people can be multiple things. Doflamingo was a spoiled kid, his attitude was terrible but somewhat understandable. He then went through some of the most gruesome circumstances imaginable. This is not an excuse, Cora turned out a good person, but how much of doflamingo is how he was nurtured or his nature is left up to interpretation, and I find that pretty cool. Also his motivation of destroying the world is because he hates the people that control all of it. Perhaps not exactly rational but destroying the celestial dragons essentially means destroying the world.

Very random piece of information, but in case this is of even the slightest of use to anyone, the font used in the dubs title cards is called crackhouse. I uh, needed it for a meme lol.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
in an alternate universe where we have nice things...
-
I don't like that the dub still uses that font. The Japanese version ditched the "cracked" text with the timeskip, (and thank goodness for that; That font was basically unreadable) yet the English dub has kept it to this day. And I just… don't like how it looks to begin with.
-
I mean, I prefer some character over the most basic font imaginable. Anyways never complain about the dub being inconsistent again cuz we’ve now had 14 years strong of crackhouse font BABY
-
If you compare them directly, they look pretty different. The Japanese font looks less "broken" and more like it has TV static underneath it. I guess it wasn't really designed for English text, though.
!

Yeah, there's a lack of attention to detail when it comes to the actual editing that Funi does to its English releases. If they still used multi-angle, it wouldn't be an issue. Not a dealbreaker, but annoying.
-
This episode title screen remarks reminds me in why certain 4kids dubs had title card screens while others didn't.
-
I like Crackhouse. lol
-
Surreal. Now processing that dressrosa is actually gonna end.
-
Anyone see any hints online about them dubbing season twelve? I hope they are and haven’t taken a break. Another hiatus would suck, though it’s nice they’ve kept us fed for the past year an a half now.
-
Well no hard evidence but like, they’re really not hyping up the fact that this is the end of an 118 episode arc too much are they? I feel like there would be a bigger deal made. There’s really just no reason for them to. I feel like if they didn’t wanna work on it nonstop they would’ve just halted production when covid came along. The only thing supporting them taking them breaks is them taking a few breaks… over the 14 years this dub has taken. The only time breaks were really frequent was fishman island and we seem to be in a very different place from then. I really wouldn’t stress about it, zou is undoubtably coming. I think you might just have punk hazard ptsd lol.
-
Well I guess we get to hear Kaido next week, awesome.
I think the last hint we might have gotten was Sonny saying he recorded some episodes where Usopp doesn’t scream, but that could be part of the Dressrosa cool down.
-
Kaidooooooo. That’s what I’m most excited for this set. Most of the rest is pretty bland wrap up.
I definitely have Punk Hazard PTSD. I lean toward believing there’s a break until I’m proven otherwise. Will definitely ration this set a little harder than usual.
-
I mean I wouldn’t call it bland exactly, but it’s a bit slow and yeah getting voices for Kaido and Jack is definitely gonna be the highlight.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Oh yeah, Apoo also. Still just… so weird that he’s gone. Gonna be really weird cuz most of his lines here are like really short and reactionary. Anybody anyone would like to see as him?
-
We get Jack's voice this set, too?
Did anyone ever put up any guesses for who Kaido will be voiced by? I don't really care that much for him as a villain (seems rather bland strongman, not much motivation and character development yet), but he's obviously a huge part in OP, so I'm super excited to see who voices him.
-
Yup, he tries to retrieve Doffy from the marines in 746 remember? Only like a line or two, but he's there.
Most random trivial thing ever, but I was adding voyage 9 to the wiki (I don't normally edit on there but they're slow to add dub stuff so I just go ahead and go it myself) and I discovered that Funimation's official title for 746 is "The Numerous Rivals Struggle Amongst Themselves! The Raging Monsters of the New World", which apart from being like the longest title in the series I think, is punctuated differently.
What I mean is ever since like… impel down? all episode titles have not been punctuated properly and always have exlcamation points after each sentence, which isnt the case in the original.746 breaks this by having none for the second sentence (although the first exclamation point isn't in the original either...) and immediately goes back to normal afterwards. This was most likely just a typo on someones part, but I wonder if its gonna carry over to the dub title card.
-
The dub managed to complete Dressrosa within a year which is so awesome considering, i was dreading this would be where the dub would take man breaks and possibly years to complete. I feel like we been eating too good with both Punk Hazard and Dressrosa complete, im thinking we may have to wait a good bit for Zou and Punk Hazard.
-
I mean, again, theres no reason for that other than…. you feel like it. Like theres no evidence, they've gone on way longer production periods without stopping so I don't know what makes this different. I'm not saying it's impossible, and who knows maybe I'm jinxing it, but I don't think this is much more likely than say a break between punk hazard and dressrosa was.
That being said I can't wait until after zou and they give us PUNK HAZARD 2 BAYBEEEEEEEEEEE
-
Maybe my imagination is lacking right now but its hard for me to picture Kaido in english with any other voice than the one Daman Mills provided for Bullet, which looking back almost has me wishing that they saved him for Kaido. Then again there's nothing stopping them from taking Kaido in another direction like they did for Whitebeard, which, I wouldn't mind too much, but I know sub watchers would complain into oblivion that the voice doesn't match the sub even if the acting and emotion is great.
-
Personally if we're talking about pre-existing voices, while Daman as Bullet would work, I'd really like Chris Guerreros Hajrudin. That voice is like exactly what I'd want for Kaido.
-
Lunchlady Doris: Here you go! Chris Rager again!
lol sorry. Couldnt resist.
-
Chris Rager as big mom.
-
I feel like there’s a big risk he’ll sound generic and dumb. I’m really hoping they get a significant actor for Kaido—someone who can deliver a really great performance and isn’t run of the mill “big, tough guy.”

Have they gone on “way longer production periods”? PH and DR must be up there. I feel like there used to consistently be a break between seasons—albeit not always a very long one.
Once someone finds evidence that they’re all still recording, then I’ll have hope again. Until then, I expect a break. They’ve been slamming these out and probably need to slow down again either to get ahead in production again or cast a ton more characters. Or, yes, worse case scenario stop dubbing for a while while they catch up on other shows.
-
I hope the dub can reach a point where it's only a year or half a year behind the original.
-
I personally think Dan Green would make a great Kaido

Haven’t we like, gone over this though? Like no zou itself hasn’t been mentioned but like, they’re clearly still recording
If you want something specific, if you calculate what sunny has said he’s recorded, he would have to be recording zou episodes. He posted a picture where you can see him recording 734 through 738, 5 episodes. When he later said he recorded 3 episodes without screaming, he replied to a comment saying he screamed a lot in the previous 6 episode session. So, assuming he’s not like misremembering something, he would’ve recorded to st lest 747. Not to mention I’m pretty sure Usopp doesn’t appear at all in some of the silver mine episodes.
Once again I feel like if they wanted to focus on other shows they would of given up on one piece after the pandemic anyways. Like Id doubt they’d go all full throttle just to take this huge break after dressrosa. You’d think they’d just, dub it at a slower pace and have to breaks if they wanted that. Like there’s no point in going fast if you’re just gonna throw the time away.
As for Kaido voice concerns, my only real one is I feel like he should have enough age to him. He’s pushing 60. And like if you’re worried about him sounding like a generic tough guy… isn’t that how you already described his character? Like don’t get me wrong I like kaido, probably more than you do, but being the biggest beefiest dude is just kinda… his thing.
-
I’ve been pulling for Paul St. Peter for the big guy. Also really hoping SungWon Cho gets a part soon. Gotta be at least one Charlotte child he can be.
-
Sungwon would be great as Pedro, he can even do the same voice he did for the Jaguar character in Aggretsuko!
But I think he'd also be great as Oven or Daifuku, maybe even Perospero or Vito. But actually, I think he would be perfect as Zeus, Prometheus, and Napoleon!
-
Now I’m just thinking of him saying “yes, mama” in his “it’s Effie voice” and now I think I need more as one of those homies.
-
Okay so I’ve thought about this a lot but don’t remember talking about it here, if I’m repeating myself I apologize. Ace gets a a brief new line this set, and while I really want Travis to still play him, and he’s been surprisingly dedicated to him up to this point, it has been years. It’s been so long since he last recorded Ace that it’s possible, if not likely, the situation has changed. Hell he even failed to reprise knuckles in team sonic racing. I feel like we should at least be considering the possibility of a recast.
-
Dude, Ace will have many lines in the future, you are making a big deal out of nothing. They will keep Travis since he still has much work to do in Wano.
