I watch Voyage to Danger earlier today on Pluto tv, I really enjoyed the movie. Zenigata had some great moments in it.
Lupin the 3rd

I finished ND best I can say is…….it was a weird movie.
Between the art direction which looked like it wanted to blend parts of part 2 and 3’s art style. Which causes some character’s designs to change in the same scene.
The twist of the treasure being a red herring.
Goemon’s weird Yakuza flick quoting is beaten into the ground.
The CIA guy who weirdly decides to go into business for himself and his partner/handler who Fujiko tries to cozy up to who also just disappears (maybe there was a scene I missed as I was kind sorta preoccupied with other things).
The way some of the scenes were awkwardly done.
The way the whole thing just ends.
Probably watch Bye Bye Liberty next which has been on to my watch list for like 16 years.
-
I’m watching Napoleon’s Dictionary which is also in Japanese so it’s safe to say everything here is potentially Japanese only.
That one was ALSO never dubbed into English, so that doesn't mean anything. Diskotek doesn't have the budget to dub stuff from scratch, and they only did seasons 4 and 5 because Cartoon Network co-funded those and aired them on tv. As a result most of the tv movies aren't dubbed, just hte initial 10 that were picked up by Pioneer 20 years ago… and those aren't even the good cast.
(And Cagliostro has had two dubs, neither of them the good group.)
My notes say ND one of my favorites largely for breaking formula (no villain) and being a heavy character piece with Lupin and Pops, but its been a loooong time since I watched it last. On bootleg VHS, so...
-
Finished Bye Bye Liberty Crisis (finally)
Definitely liked it better then ND. The remix of Zenigata’s theme in the opening was lit.
Also like how they never explained how they put the Statue of Liberty back.
Watching From Russia With Love and someone on the animation team must’ve really loved New York to set parts of all three specials there. Also the library scene was hilarious as hell.
Edit: Finished FRWL decent special all in all Rasputin was a weird antagonist I like how his goofy probing gimmick winds up being revealed to be deadly….damn shame it got Lucky killed when he was trying to get his revenge.
-
Watched all the specials that Pluto TV has that I haven’t seen.
Hemingway Papers was okay. Now I have 7 more specials,4 movies, & two series to watch.
-
The absolutely random (And aggressive) titty scene in from Russia with love gets me everytime. It is a solid one in book, nose and mouth poking and all that weird shit aside. Those two hitmen were good for one movie grunts too.
Nappys dictionary only makes me recall two things, Lupin disguised as Zenny waxing poetically about their never ending tom and jerry chase and that out of nowhere escape from the G7 by somehow launching the castle tower as a rocket. Also in my minds eye it looks butt ugly.
Bye bye liberty is near and dear to my heart because it was my second Lupin movie ever, and i got it back when you had to dig thru the import box at the VHS store to maybe find an anime that wasn't phantom quest corp or mazinger. But having watched it relatively recently i think it still holds up, ugly art style for sure, but it had good action, Goemon simping for someone, good Zenny chases and a decent plot. The annoying kid wasn't even all that annoying

I actually in relation to me remembering my backlog with the specials found out that ND was apparently the 3rd produced of those 4 specific specials. I can only presume mistakes were made leading to the art being such a mess as it was.
The annoying kid wasn't even all that annoying
I was surprised at that too.
-
I don't know why i can't enjoy Hemmingway, i mean it is essentially a sillier version of Yojimbo, but it just doesn't gel with me. Crazy mash is peak villain naming tho

That explains a little. but whoever came up with that hairy hands design needs to be fired tho

Lupin repeatedly playing that song on the jukebox even after the jukebox is blown up….which is also the ending theme for the
special? That explains a little. but whoever came up with that hairy hands design needs to be fired tho
I believe that goes all the way back to green jacket Lupin if not the orginal mangas.
-
More Lupin on Pluto tv news. Pluto tv launch an 24/7 Lupin channel.
-
All we need is a way to bypass ads and we Gucci.
-
That explains a little. but whoever came up with that hairy hands design needs to be fired tho
That would be Monkey Punch.
It works a bit better in his scribbly sketchy style in black and white though, not so great in animation.
-
I hope they do more standalone stories this time and less overlong plot arcs.
The solo episodes were almost all great in the last two seasons. While the arcs generally just left me incredibly bored.
-
I really enjoyed the two big arcs in Part V and absolutely adored Ami, I hope we see more of her.
-
I personally enjoyed Part 5 all the way through. Goemon's fight in the 2nd arc (Episode 10) is one of my favorite moments in Part 5.
-
I was looking for a new anime to get into, is this series worth watching? And if so where do I begin to start the series? How would you suggest to go about watching it?

Robby's the resident expert (and you too Wolfwood ^_^;), but if I may offer my two cents:
Lupin III is a very extensive and prolific franchise that, to date, encompasses 5 TV series (with a sixth in production) and countless movies and TV specials. Naturally, with any large franchise, it's kind of a mixed bag, with some being great and some being not so great. And there really is no one ideal starting point. Of course, there are some series, movies, specials that should be avoided since they're either not very good or just aren't good for first-time viewers. Counterintuitively, Lupin Part 1, the first TV series, probably isn't a good place to start since, from what I've heard, it isn't very good and doesn't hold up that well. So here's what I would recommend:
Lupin III Part 2 - Pretty much the definitive Lupin experience. It goes all the way back to 1977, so obviously it's a bit dated in terms of animation and storytelling, but I think it still holds up well. And, of course, it is 155 episodes, only half of which were even dubbed. Maybe check out the first few episodes and see if it's your speed.
Castle of Cagliostro - Probably the best Lupin movie and directed by the great Hayao Miyazaki. If you don't want to commit to a full TV series yet, this might be a good way to get a feel for the characters and style of the franchise.
Lupin III Part 4 and 5 - The two most recent TV series that came out a few years ago. Might be to good to watch if you want more modern animation and pacing. And with each series being only about 25 episodes, it's not that big a time commitment. That said, reactions to these series have been mixed. Most notably, these series tried to incorporate multi-episode, season-long story arcs, which really isn't typical for the franchise.
In any case, if you decide to check it out, keep in mind that the series is very episodic and formulaic, so there's really no way you're going to "miss" anything by watching one thing before another thing.
-
I was looking for a new anime to get into, is this series worth watching? And if so where do I begin to start the series? How would you suggest to go about watching it?
You can start anywhere with Lupin, its all standalone.
Either of the new series (series 4 and 5, "the blue jacket") are decent jumping on points. Modern animation and such, only 26 episodes each, so not a huge commitment. Though they do introduce prominent secondary characters that aren't anywhere else in the franchise so it might be a little weird if you get used to the new tagalongs that aren't anywhere else. They're also a little more arc heavy, when the franchise is traditionally all stand alone episodes, and your mileage will vary on that.
The second series (red jacket) is Lupin at its best though a bit dated having been made in the 70's, but its super solid and has a great dub. You can jump into any episode of that one and be okay.
THen there's about 50 movies to choose from, but if you go with one of those you'll want to start with
- Episode 0. An origin story AND one of the best films. Introduces you to all the characters very well, great animation. If you don't like that movie, don't bother going any further, Lupin isn't for you.
- Fuma Conspiracy- Ninjas and samurai and the greatest car chase of all time
- Castle of Cagliostro- the one Miyazaki did. Not exactly typical Lupin, as the characters all act a bit different than their norm, and the gang are a little sidelined, so its a slightly bad introduction for that reason… but its a fantastic film. If you only ever watch one Lupin thing, make it Cagliostro.
Cagliostro's my all time favorite film, in fact. (not just Lupin film, or animated film, just film, period.)
From there there's best/worst lists and opinions will vary, but if you get that far and like what you see, we can recommend more deeply.
Robby's the resident expert, but if I may offer my two cents:
Wolfy's on par. I might have seen a smidge more than him because I'm at like 99.9% now barring the last three movies (And I didn't like the Fujiko series so I'm in no hurry) , but Wolfy seems to have rewatched more of it, and more recently. I've only seen most of the movies once.
Counterintuitively, Lupin Part 1, the first TV series, probably isn't a good place to start since, from what I've heard, it isn't very good and doesn't hold up that well.
Yeah, there's some good episodes in there but they didn't quite have the group dynamics down yet or the fun of it… and the positively ancient animation does let it down. There's a reason they replaced the entire production team halfway through. It's very hard to get through and is mostly for completion sake.
The fourth episode is my favorite of the entire franchise, but they basically redid that episode in the blue jacket series anyway.
-

Is it okay to not like the twist at the end and therefore the special?
! Cause whether you come into First Contact with experience or without that was dumb and just invalidates the whole story…..which of course will not be the first time such a thing happens in a Lupin work but still.

No more harder to get through than part two because of it's large episode count and mostly badly written episodes with some bad art and animation here and there. Or part three with it's not for everyone Monkey Punch inspired character design.

First contact is the greatest shaggy dog story ever told
A lot was already covered, but here is my advice, don't watch Green vs Red. Other than that you can pretty much try whatever is easiest to get your hands on as long as you go into it with the idea of just getting the feel for the characters and if you have any interest in seeing how hat guy, sword guy, perv guy, chase guy and boob woman interact and get reimagined/reinterperted in literally every way you could think of. If you do then just start going down the rabbit hole in any order and enjoy the variety. Just don't watch them all in a row, it never ends well
-

Or Return Of The Magician which doesn't have a shaggy dog story but has some plot holes (not exclusive to this special) and some random nonsensical shit (also not exclusive to this special) but easily the worst of the specials/movies though some like Robby will mention Burn Zantetsuken!/Dragon Of Doom:ninja:.

Well except for Fujiko who goes through an extensive period of being either a backstabber or a distressed damsel or both. But who does switch between being a brunette, redhead, blonde, & raven hair.
-
Nevermind the story, the 3D effects in that movie are pure eye poison. I can live with a poor story, just don't assault me with cutting edge 2000's CGI. Also was there anyone out there who thought y'know i wonder what ever happend to that one-shot villain from 1972? Seems like an odd choice even for an anniversary

He somehow survived being set on fire and falling off a waterfall and ain’t even mad at the guy who did it nor is Fujiko for kidnapping and terrorizing her to the point of screwing him just cause.

Thank you guys for all the suggestions! I’m really looking forward to getting into this series

! Cause whether you come into First Contact with experience or without that was dumb and just invalidates the whole story…..which of course will not be the first time such a thing happens in a Lupin work but still.
That's not a twist.
! That was their way of acknowledging, "if you've seen other versions of the story about how the characters met, be it the green jacket series or the manga or some other telling that comes after this one… it's okay. This may not actually be exactly how things went, but it's pretty close.
! And that was the RIGHT thing to do. Because, for instance, all of Goemon's stuff was straight from his original introduction in green jacket/manga, including his motivation and the way the action scenes went. Like, some camera shots were identical and the exact stunts he pulled and the gags. It was straight up and I caught onto that immediately..
! But, if you're going to be a nitpicky fan, you might then go "but in the original version Goemon's master was doing blah blah, and they actually met another time before they did that part, and there were several other adventures in the middle, and yadda yadda!" Even though they did a scene-for-scene recreation of the first meeting with Goemon, the stuff surrounding it was different.
! Meanwhile, Fujiko has about 47 different ways she first met Lupin, and Jigen's was never really pinned down but depending on the special he may or may not have had a much longer career before he met Lupin.
! That was their acknowledgement that this wasn't the first version of the origin. And probably not the last. And that there was a decent chance of it contradicting stuff. And that they didn't want to stranglehold anyone else in the future that might want to take a crack at it by saying theirs was the only, definitive version.
! That's also why Fujiko's hair color switched in that final scene. To ALSO acknowledge "also sometimes the tone is really different, what can you do? THey're all just stories in the end though."
! That was entirely their "if you're wondering how he eats and breathes and other science facts, tell yourself it's just a show, you really should relax."
! Anyway. Wasn't a twist. It was an acknowledgment that you don't have to worry too hard about continuity. No more harder to get through than part two because of it's large episode count and mostly badly written episodes
Oh now you're just being hurtful.
Or part three with it's not for everyone Monkey Punch inspired character design.
THe character designs weren't the problem with pink jacket. The full embracing of "lets be CRAZY AND ON DRUGS!" was. The pinnacle of course being the Gold of Babylon movie. That was… something else.
It has some decent episode in it and is worth watching overall, but its not anyhwhere near the front of the line for recommends.
-
Oh now you're just being hurtful.
Now let's be honest Robby for as funny, thrilling, or engaging as many of those episodes were did you really like all 155 episodes in their entirety?

To be fair part 2 came out when Heroin was still the go to drug and there's a good number of episodes there where someone had to have been high or going through some things when they wrote some of those episodes.
Like Part 1 had Time Travelers, and Magicians.
Part 2 had Vampires, Rich Guys wanting to eat Lupin's Brains, An evil Mastermind who melts the polar ice caps, Wacky Races, and whatever the hell was the deal with the villianess in episode 59
-
Red jacket had some duds, that fucking popcorn rocket haunts me still, not to mention fat fujiko aunt. And that whole episode about the pencil shavings cat fishing wasn't too great. But for the most part the crack plots are what keeps me coming back

There were some misses to be sure, but on the whole it's solid.
You said "large episode count and mostly badly written episodes" which implies you thought most of them were bad, and I will not agree with that at all.

Be aware, that Lupin's "wife" is a character new to that particular series. She has a LOT of screen time there, but love her or hate her, she's a series 4 thing only.
Be curious to see what your take is since you don't know the franchise beforehand, so you may end up having very different opinions on some things, that I'll try not to bias.
-
There were some misses to be sure, but on the whole it's solid.
You said "large episode count and mostly badly written episodes" which implies you thought most of them were bad, and I will not agree with that at all.
So you would demand satisfaction for such disrespect?
All jokes aside though and to be less harsh not all the weaker episodes of Part 2 are cringefully bad as the randomly examples I mentioned but a portion of those episodes are still well weak episodes. If I were to reccommend how much of the show a first timer should watch I would probably only reccomend about 40-45 episodes out of the entire 155 run. Granted that number could improve or get worse if I rewatched the wholr show again…..but I don't think I'm gonna do that.
-
The raw charm of the dub elevates it a lot, even over the weaker episodes. And the stuff that reran a lot on adult swim I have a fondnes for though they didn't actually air all that many. The second half that never got covered is a bit weaker without it.
The Japanese cast is fantastic, of course, but that particular English cast is just perfect. I actually waited a very long time to watch series 4 and 5 in order to wait for the english version.
Its just a shame so many of the movies are… completely random other groups. And the license was passed around to so many different places over the years, its not even like there's consistent B cast to get used to. But a B, C, D, and E cast.
The first Cagliostro dub where they call him Wolf is pretty fun tho.
-
Is that the "should've worn an abestos suit" dub of cagliostro? Cause i absolutely love that one. But yeah the random dub groups are not great, i noticed that when i casually watched Nostradamus last night on youtube, i found it a lot more entertaining with the original Japanese cast. It still kills me that they didn't make the tower heist the main part of the movie, but that's neither here nor there.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I think red jacket has like maybe 6 or so genuinly bad eps. Maybe 20-25 weaker ones. Most fall into middling to good for me. And then there are the golden ones i can watch all day everyday. Oh who am i kidding i can watch 'em all
-
Speaking of Part II, I just finished the last dubbed episode, so it's all subs from here on out. It'll be interesting to see how they compare both in the voices and dialogue.
I agree that the English VA's and writers do an overall great job, though it is bizarre to occasionally hear 90's references in a show that was very obviously made in the 70's.
-
Just finished the first 3 episodes of Lupin the 3rd part 4, I like it so far gonna keep watching
It's an interesting starting point. But probably quite logical for a modern viewer. Once (if) you start going back in to the oldies you could consider looking at mystery of mamo, it's a visually interesting movie with the same gag dub gang as the Italian job had. And it gave us this gem. Still to this day my top five Lupin quotes.
-
I also recommend the Pioneer/Geneon dub for Mystery of Mamo. It is such a fun dub for the movie.
-
New Lupin, Part 6 trailer is out. I already like the new version of the Lupin theme.
-
Yeah that remix is pretty fire.
I'm still a sucker for the VERY first opening for Green Jacket that was only around for the first few episodes. It's so… old... and not the super theme from Red Jacket that's mega iconic, but its certainly the origin. THe "dabba dabba dabba daa" gets me. I remember my anime club would always jke "Someone got credited for writing those lyrics?"
It's so weird that they keep making new blue jacket episodes seperate "series", even though they're being made by the same teams in the same style. Yeah there's a year or so gap between seasons… and grenn-red had a five year gap and red-pink had only a two year gap so its not like the precedent is there being a really long time between versions... but they were all stylisticallly and tonally different, felt like different versions. ...
Blue jacket doesn't feel like distinct eras at all.
-
I caught a couple Part 1 episodes randomly, when I checked out the Lupin Pluto tv channel. I like both the opening and ending songs for Part 1.
-
"Quick what are the colours of San Marino's and Italy flag?"
"Let me google, sir. Hum, blue, white, red and green."
"We already done red and green, a white jacket is not eye catchy. Blue it is." -
Lupin can never wear a white jacket again.
-
Jigen is getting a new VA for Part 6.
-
It’s gonna take a bit longer to get through this season because I just learned that the Wheel Of Time tv show is coming Out this November and I have the first two books but I never read them, I want to read at least the first two books before I watch the show So I’m putting most of my focus into that right now but I’ve watched four episodes of Lupin the 3rd and so far I really like it

On my watch through of Lupin, Part 2. I'm up to episode 49 now. The Dr. Derange episode in my opinion was totally messed up and the ending was dark. I did like at the end of the episode that Zenigata got back at the Wanted Club.
-
Sat down to watch green vs red, but it is still just way too meta and up it's own ass to be fun. Like i get it, this scene is like a scene from a better movie and that Lupin imposter is like how he acted in -inserted classic series- but could you please try to make this good too. Like at it's core a guy challenges Lupin to his title has potential, except i would scrub the whole blah bit about how Lupin is just an identity you pick up and drop as you like. Also what was up with that nazi Lupin at the end? Try as i might i can't peg a reference to that. Oh well 2/10 for that bit where it changes to the manga style for a solid minute, the rest i exactly as i remembered it.
I caught a couple Part 1 episodes randomly, when I checked out the Lupin Pluto tv channel. I like both the opening and ending songs for Part 1.
I mean it isn't neccesarily good, but it is catchy gets in your head in that way a lot of random Lupin music does. Like i start humming that i'm a nice guy song randomly from time to time.
"Quick what are the colours of San Marino's and Italy flag?"
"Let me google, sir. Hum, blue, white, red and green."
"We already done red and green, a white jacket is not eye catchy. Blue it is."I'm holding out for a purple jacket.
Just like fifteen new shows til we get there.
Lupin can never wear a white jacket again.
Has any of you ever seen that film? If so is it any good in either a legit good or a the room kind of way?
Jigen is getting a new VA for Part 6.
I mean it's the end of an era but the man sounds postively ancient compared to the others. Hope the new guy can manage to step out of his shadow and that epcar never retires

Yeah that one is one of the weakest ones in the red jacket series. Not that that i neccesarily dislike dark, i just really hate that oh no the character gets kidnapped by the illuminati flavor of the week plot. I can't think of a single case of that not being ass of the top of my head
-
Has any of you ever seen that film? If so is it any good in either a legit good or a the room kind of way?
It's exactly what you think a Live Action Lupin made in the 70's would be. It's sort of got some Jackie Chan energy but without Jackie.
It is watchable but I can't really recommend it. I suppose the question is, what are your feelings on the Adam West Batman and Pink Panther movies?
-
I've started watching Island of Assasins, my third ever Lupin…thing, after Cagliostro and Nostradamus.
In 11 minutes we have surprising violence, an explosive physics-defying motorcycle assassin highway chase, orbital space lasers and Zenigata being brought back from the brink of death by hearing the word "Lupin"
The art style is throwing me a bit, but this seems like good fun so far.
-
Island of Assassins is one of the better ones. For a long time I assumed they were being inspired by by Cowboy Bebop because a lot of the style and storytelling and mood is similar… but it actually came out several months before Bebop. It was one of the first specials to really up the ante on the animation as well.
But I remember it when I got it on bootleg tape and it was called "In Memory of the Walther P38." I understand why they changed the title for the english release but the original is fancier.
