Yeah, maybe her cat or something. Lol.
Hmm. Lack of base might also have to do with the recording equipment standards here vs Japan. Or at least the standards of audio levels in engineering.

Speaking of Clint, sometimes the script writers lean into really kiddish translations that forget the age of their audience. In episode 700, pirates literally say, “Nahnahnahnabooboo, stick your head in doodoo.” Surely that isn’t so accurate a translation it needed to be written that way. Every so often the dub makes me cringe really hard with its translation, and it does no favors to us arguing (with sub-only idiots) that the dub is good and well-written.
That line your talking about was actually translated pretty well, in japanese I’m pretty sure he said “bunpuku pu” which doesn’t have a direct translation but the one they went with is pretty close.
Well, finished V3 and my wife and I have decided to just sign up for the Funimation service. I’ll get the collections as they come out, but I’ll stop buying and reselling the individual voyages. Much better for the wallet this way.
Also my big take away from this set was just how annoying Dellinger is, something the sub really can’t convey since I don’t understand Japanese. Same with Machvise’s speech quirk. Excellent. Happy to have 3 voyages worth of episodes to catch up on (4 by the time we catch up).
Yeah, it has to be frustrating being that behind. Hope you enjoy the almost 40 more episodes lol.

I actually think the dub did a great job with machvise. You can’t really convey it that well in subtitles, so all the ways they incorporate words ending and “een” just works much better.
still catching up
Huh…in episode 670, FUNi got fancy with their English on-screen text for Lao G.'s introduction box. But only in that once instance.
You mean they like have the background that’s in the original? I think I remember there being one instance where they did that. No idea why they don’t all the time.
Interesting fact I just found out. Ethan Gallardo, Señor Pinks VA, also voiced the guy on Hodys crew Franky fought on fishman island. I find it amusing both his roles have been Franky opponents lol.

That’s the thing, it’s great! It’s like how when reading and watching the subs, the Yeti Cool fight was whatever. In the dub? Oh my gosh it was hilarious, or at least the brothers themselves were. These are the things that frustrate me with dub haters (unless they’re fluent in Japanese) is that how do you know the acting is better in the sub? Just cuz they’re shouting or crying? You’re also missing out on some great jokes just cuz the sub can’t carry them.

Yeah, and it also starts zoomed in higher on the screen, and then slowly shrinks toward the bottom. I wonder if the "box" was harder to remove because of it moving in the original, so they kept the box and just replaced the text inside for once.
Presumably, they remove the box in most cases because the English text needed to replace the Japanese text would not have enough room.
EDIT - Actually, I just checked the original simulcast footage. The English text follows the Japanese text perfectly in how its presented in that scene.
They've been removing the border around the character captions? If so, that's annoying to hear. If they're going to replace stuff like that then they should replicate it in full.

So then maybe my complaint is more with the anime filler writers for making something uncharacteristically kiddie. I’m sure the dub writers could’ve picked something a little less kiddie, but if this is a close translation it’s a valid choice.

Dellinger and Machvise’s voices are fun. Good to see someone besides me and Blake are watching the dub still. Haha. Feel like everyone’s falling behind and not chatting about it on here as often as we used to.
Yeah I think most people here are collectors and don’t wanna shell out the extra money, which is valid. Not exactly a fan of double dipping but I don’t wanna wait and I’m definitely not giving up 27 collections in so…
The only reason I'm not talking about the dub recently because I been waiting for the blu ray/dvd releases for the series. The main reason, I'm switching to Collections starting with Collection 28 is due to the price increase of the voyages, and the Collection prices is going to be where the Voyages prices was at.

I'm assuming they remove the border because they don't want to redraw it, and English text naturally takes up more space than would be allowed in the smallish boxes.
Shades of Oda making his speech bubbles wider to accommodate international translations.
It was Randy Aguebor, who voiced Brownbeard in the last arc. His current VA Chris Guerrero also voices Gecko Moria and Pekoms.
Mr. Guerrero was also Cooler for DBZ Abridged. And the narrator for that short-lived Toriko dub. He was the best part, every episode starts with him enthusiastically describing some buck-wild food phenomenon in the world and there needs to be a YouTube compilation of just that.

IIRC, it's a plain white border. Couldn't they just stretch the middle? But even if they can't, there's nothing stopping them just leaving the Japanese footage in there. That means that there's a design element from the episodes, albeit a minor one, that's just plain missing from the English DVDs.

The boxes also have the little curvy spirals on the end corners. lol
If anyone doesn't have it yet, Amazon got One Piece Collection 26 (Episodes 615 - 641) for 20.99 right now.
Funi’s gonna have an industry panel for comic-con on the 24th, so if we’re looking for an early august release for voyage 8 it’ll most likely be announced there. I’m really hoping it is, voyage 7 was fun but it honestly just made me want to see all the voyage 8 episodes dubbed even more lol. We’re so close to the climax.
Yeah, I also don’t care about voyage eight, though. A single battle raging for thirteen episodes sounds like a snore. The real reason to get voyage eight out soon is for voyage nine to be closer. Haha.

First few episodes of the voyage seven set have been somewhat fun, at least. Feels good that there’s at least a little bit of progress being made each episode—the execs going down one by one.
I mean I just like the fight itself a lot. Although obviously I’m mostly referring to the last few episodes mostly. And as scattered as dressrosa is, I think having a set that’s mostly focused on one set of characters will actually be really refreshing by comparison. I don’t know though, I forget a lot of the specifics of about it, but it’s still a really exciting novelty. It’s weird to think about but dressrosa was the last sorta “traditional” arc before wano.
We caught up through the Corazon flashback last night and honestly, switching to The Funi service right now was the best choice. The content in each set (barring 6 since the flashback is worth it) just really shows how the pacing was at this time. Entire episodes don’t start until 6 or 7 minutes in, no wonder everyone was so tired of this by the time the anime finished it. It was great to just be able to keep going through this chunk. Looking forward to the next set and finishing some of these fights.
I had mentioned a few pages back how nice it was that each set is pretty contained in what it is—flashback, exec’s fight, Doffy fight. This season just breaks up really well into 13-episode sets. I remember back in Enies lobby (or maybe water seven?) when the sets broke up a flashback. I ration episodes but often try to marathon flashbacks, so that’s annoying.
I don’t think there’s another big flashback till Wano. Wow.
The sets were good at that, but with the actual new content in each episode it makes a very quick to burn through.
I suppose Sanji’s flashback stuff in Whole Cake isn’t too long, and Zou only flashes back (flashbacks?) to a few days earlier so yes, I felt confident telling my sobbing wife that Corazon was (as of now) the last super duper sad flashback.
I'd kind of forgotten about Sanji's. But that was so short and didn't have a ton of meat to it.
It's cool that remote work is catching on. I hope more 4kids voice actors start showing up more often.
There’s also big moms, that was a few eps I believe.

I dont remember there being any 4kids actors recently…
Mike Pollock voices Doffys dad. He didn’t voice any characters per se but he did a lot of narrations segments and ads for the 4kids dub.
I’m very excited to see them broaden their acting pool to get new VAs in OP. Hopefully the acting talent jumps if they’re not relying on on Texas actors.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! I love him. I had forgotten that!
15th came and went. No OP in October.
Not really surprising. They've been putting out voyages every 2 months and we don't have enough for a collection yet. I do wonder if they're literally just gonna release collections the month after they have enough voyages from now on.
I haven't manage to catch up yet because im waiting on streaming, but are all the executives defeated in english?
All except Trebol
When is the next release of dub episodes on FUNimation's site?
Eps. 707-719 come out on the 27th
Now that Voyage Seven is out on Digital and coming to streaming on the 27th, and only 2 more voyages left to be released after that, one will have 13 episodes and the other should have 14. Which way do you think they will go? I think it would make more sense to have 14 episodes on Voyage Eight since that would take us up to Doflamingo's defeat, where as if it was 13, it would be the episode prior to his defeat.
@Blake:

Perfect timing! I just passed the episode where Luffy and Zoro crack up at Pica's voice, and I know the most recent batch ends during the Law flashback. So I'll have more episodes to watch by the time I get through these.
I just discovered something REALLY weird. Did anybody else notice there just… isn’t a 5.1 dub mix on the dvds anymore???? I noticed on collection 26 it said it was stereo, and what do you know from season 10 voyage 4 onwards that is in fact the case. It does not even change at season 11 for some weird reason involving the blu-rays or anything. I guess it doesn’t effect me personally cuz I don’t have a surround sound set up, but what the hell? Literally everything they do nowadays is 5.1.
Yeah, that's odd. I guess it could be a licensing thing, although even in that case you'd think it would take effect at the beginning of a new batch of licensed episodes. It's hard to imagine why Toei would care, unless they want all the foreign versions to match and think that remixes might be too revisionist. Or we'll see more Funi titles forgo upmixes from now on and OP just happened to have the fastest turn-around. Maybe they'd already mixed most of Season 10 when the policy changed and they were allowed to use the surround mixes they'd already completed?
Not that it's a major loss. The series' sound design is pretty simple and there was rarely much chance for them to use the rear channels effectively. It's not like the Movie Packs, where 5.1 mixes existed but weren't used, but it's a bit of a downgrade none the less.
The thing is if it changes mid-season i’m willing to bet at least some 5.1 mixes exist that weren’t released.
There might be. I suppose it depends whether they mix them a "Voyage" at a time and whether they create the upmix at the same time they mix the English dialogue itself. The stereo tracks on Season 1-3 seem to be downmixes of the 5.1 track, presumably meaning that there wasn't a dedicated stereo mix for those episodes.
My Collection 26's here and I've noticed some technical things that I don't think have been mentioned yet.
The locked subtitles makes a lot of sense because Toei was worried about reverse importation with the Blu-ray’s being so cheap here.
- As of "Season 11", Marathon Play actually skips that New World introduction but keeps the recap of the previous episodes. Apparently the branching points weren't tied to chapters after all.
Oh wow really! I hadn't checked out Marathon play on my set yet, but that's huge! I've been asking Funi for that for awhile
