Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)

Thankfully Usopp kinda stops mattering lol.
EDIT:Please dont kill me lol.
-
You’re not entirely wrong. He’s barely in the next few arcs.
-
I mean yeah, so are half of the straw hats. You can’t matter if you’re not present lol. He still does stuff when he is, he ain’t no robin. I do wish things were more straw hat centric sometimes but as they go he’s been treated pretty decently I feel, I just wish he got another proper finished fight even if he has often been involved otherwise.
-
I miss Nami during this arc, so WCI will be nice for me. I’ll only really miss Zoro.
-
Imagine not being a franky and usopp misser - this post was made by the franky and usopp gang
-
Franky is my least favorite by a mile. I like Usopp, but we get a good bit of him in DR, so okay.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Until the dub, I’d forgotten about that stupid scene where Doffy tells Bellamy that his motivation is to destroy the world. Well, okay.

I kid, however if Franky is your least favorite I WILL fight you lol. My second favorite personally.
As for the Doffy scene yeah I can agree, like it doesn’t line up with the rest of him all that much. I mean yeah he wants to destroy things the celestial dragons hold dear which is, a pretty large portion of the world, but that just makes him across as generic mwahaha villain. I do think the angle of Doffys occupation being irrelevant to his goals and values is a good one, but I think it could’ve been handled better.
-
He was great during Water 7, maybe one of the best, but DR really had me disliking him. I'm just now rewatching the Senor Pink fight. Kissing the woman to "keep her quiet," then her falling for him immediately is pretty gross. Top three worst moments in OP. Thanks, Franky. People give Sanji shit, but this is worse than anything Sanji would've pulled. I've also always hated Franky's post-timeskip design. His OG design was so, so much better. Personal preference there, I know, but he looks like a knockoff Matel toy now.
And yeah, I'll say again that Doffy was such a disappointment to me this arc. They set him up as a brilliant mastermind and underworld broker, yet this arc has potentially the least complicated plot in the series: big fighting tournament, then bounty hunting tournament. Nonstop fighting. I just finished set five. Blek. This part of the arc is the worst. Doffy's only good plan this entire arc was tricking Law with Fujitora and the surprise Celestial Dragon relation. I also really wanted him to control the SHs and make them fight against each other with the string. That would've been such an easy heartbreaking grab; Oda passed it up. The back half of this arc is reminding me why it's one of my least favorites in the series.
Will finally marathon the Corazon flashback in a week or two. I'm waiting for the new set to drop before I burn through all those episodes. They'll have me enthusiastic again.
-
I fear that perhaps were getting too much into general OP discussion than the dub lol, but yes I can agree the whole Kuween Franky thing was really dumb and pointless, usually if something is problematic in OP it at least like… progresses the plot. Oh and I love Frankys post timeskip design (although its honestly partially because how hated it is, which I really do not understand). Like its really big and silly but just feels like a natural progression for him to me.
I don't really care how much of a good planner doffy is or whatever honestly, his character is interesting enough to me that it all really works. Sure there were other cool things Oda could've dont with him, but as things are the arc is already 100 chapters long and I'm not sure how much more straw hats falling into traps I'd be able to take lol. This arc isn't perfect but for me when its good its really good.
Getting a bit more on topic though, honestly voyage 7 is gonna be a frustrating for me. Not because the episodes are bad, but we're so close to the climax why cant we just get there already!!!
-
Other people hate his design, too? Hadn't heard that. It's very awkward, though, so I'm not surprised.
I wasn't saying to add stuff. I was saying I was disappointed with the routes Oda chose to follow–namely the fighting and tournaments. It was a suggestion of replacement, not addition.
Voyage seven will be decent at least because it'll wrap up a good number of the fights.
Back to the dub: maybe it's just because it's a long arc with a shitton of characters, but I've run into more voices I've disliked this arc than ever before. Could also be the work-from-home limitations, pushing Funimation beyond its normal actors pool (most likely), new directors making iffy casting decisions, and/or the faster production schedule. Scarlet's voice sounds immediately bad every time we hear her (sounds like a middle-aged old woman, possibly heavier); Rebecca's voice is fine but not great (the accent isn't good); some of the little people sound terribly bad (this was true of the kids in PH, too, so not a surprise); Pica I'm getting used to but still think sounds like an amateur voice actor putting on a silly voice; Sugar, who, yes, sounds even worse at the beginning of set six when she's forced to scream.
One thing I will say about Vic's Sabo is that he was a little more emotive than JYB. JYB doesn't put quite as much emotion into his lines. I don't have a strong preference for either of them, honestly. They sound pretty similar.
Of course, most of the castings and voices are still good. There's just a good many more than normal I'm not hot on this arc. Ideo and Blue Gilly's actors/voices are also really good and feel wasted on those characters. Some standouts for me: Trebol, Bartolomeo, Cavendish. My ears perk up whenever they enter the screen. To a lesser degree: Diamante, Kin, Don Chinjao, Fujitora, Senor Pink, Sabo, Machvise, Lao G, Kyros (though he sometimes phones it in and doesn't really get into his yells/screams), Dellinger, Giolla. They're all great. Much of the casting this season works really well.
-
I mean theres nobody I really dislike, but yeah its probably just the sheer volume of people. The tontattas sound kinda annoying I guess, but they do in the original too. I actually really like Scarlets voice, its just that yeah, it doesnt fit a 15 year old. At the same time her and Kyros age gap is frankly really gross, so if the dub makes me forget it its a positive in my book honestly.
I do really like Trebol, my only complaint with it is that it maybe sounds a bit too young? but its so silly in the first place that like its not a big deal.
I did say a while back that I didn't like Mach Vise's, but that was probably a bit premature cuz Ive really grown to like it (well, as much as I can for such a non-character). I like the more silly unique takes compared to the original where its just like big deep dude #4085684590.
If anyone is dissapointing out of the antagonists it would have to be sugar as we've already talked enough about, and Lao G honestly. Dont get me wrong I like his voice, but his line deliveries aren't the best sometimes. Like he doesn't sell his energy enough sometimes, idk.
Every voice or performance Im not crazy about usually belongs to a character I'm not crazy about, so it really doesnt bother me.
Oh and I can certainely agree on Blue Gilly and Ideo, they both sound really cool. I'm a especially a big fan of Kellen Goff (who voices the former) so I really want to see him in a bigger role eventually. In fact while i'm talking about people I wanna see in another role Id really like to see Mike Pollock again, Homing is relevant to the plot and everything but he doesnt get a ton to work with.
-
I'd love to see Aaron Dismuke voicing someone. His performance as Peco in Ping Pong is really wonderful.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
For Machvise, the quirky voices always get the most laughs for me, so I've been happy with it from the get-go. Your comments about Lao G are mine for Kyros. Some actors just don't want to commit to dramatic shouting. I disagree on Trebol. I don't think he sounds young, really.
-
I guess I can get what you mean with Kyros but idk, Lao Gs deliveries are just a tad odd sometimes.
I know Aaron voiced young zoro in unlimited adventure, theres lots of actors with him with kinda higher younger sounding voices that Id like to see in one piece but have no idea where theyd fit. OP doesnt have a whole ton of teenagers and such.
-
He has a very distinct voice. I always recognize it. He was the squid top three classmate guy in MHA too. I don’t think of him as young Zoro or little kids usually. Go check out Ping Pong; that’s a stunner. Top three anime ever for me.
-
Oh nah, I know what he sounds like. He did used to do really young characters back in the day cause he was one of the rare child actors (most of the roles he was recast in, which is why brina took over young zoro). I dont even mean like children neccesarily, there just arent a ton that kinda young bright sound? Not saying he sounds generic or anything, he just kinda has an uncommon vocal type for one piece in particular. Either way I've liked the performances I've heard from him and would like to see him in the show, I just dont know who.
-
Hmmm. Yeah, I can’t think of barely any teenage characters upcoming. They’re all adults or children. (I was happy with Momo’s voice. Now hopefully they do a great job with Tama. She’s so endearing.)
-
Well Tama is really far off to think about now lol, but yeah I'm curious. I've said this before but I'm really interested how wano charatcers will be handled, they're so japanese that I cant really imagine english voices for most of them. Even if Kin has grown on me he was still initially really jarring and seems to be to most people when they first hear him.
-
I’ve grown to love Kin, though some of his deliveries are occasionally weird. Still getting used to Kanjuro, but I like the formalism of these characters. Hopefully they can keep it consistent, but I don’t count on it.
-
Kanjuro was much easier and natural for me personally. I do really look forward to how they'll handle the recent material in 2042.
-
I imagine some of the Wano characters will have accents and others won’t—like with DR. Such an annoying inconsistency, since the whole point of Wano is that they don’t have outsiders. But we’ll see. I’m criticizing them already for a mistake I only suspect they’ll make.
-
Eh, if Kin of all people doesnt have one I imagine they wont. I think stereotypical asian accents in dubs nowadays is a general no-no anyways.
-
Sorry, I said accent but I suppose it's more in their delivery (and writing)–the formality and shortness with which they speak. I suppose it isn't really an accent--more a delivery style. I was saying I hope all the Wano characters sound similar in that respect. They've kept it up with Kanjuro.
Said another way: Kanjuro and Kin sound different from the other OP characters. I hope the citizens of Wano keep that trend up. In Dressrosa, we've got only the royal family who has an accent--and then for some reason Senor Pink does, too, which doesn't make much sense since it's only the royal family who has it--not even the citizens of Dressrosa.
-
Ah, I see. Well I feel like it’ll probably depend on the character just cuz it varies a fair bit in the original. Like I don’t think Raizo or the animal duo talk quite as formally, especially the latter.
-
Dog and cat not having Wano accents makes sense, though; they grew up on Zou. Note my updated post above, btw.
-
What I was trying to get at is like, Kin and Kanjuro in particular are overtly stereotypical samurai, and uh I still don’t know how to use spoiler tags lol but uh, they have reasons for maybe using outdated language. Wano natives such as tama evidently don’t speak the same way as those two.
We’ve talked about this before but I’m pretty sure the reason for his accent doesn’t have anything to do with dressrosa, he just looks like he’d have that accent. I can understand why it may be confusing in an arc full of Spanish accents already, but honestly I can’t imagine him sounding any different lol.
-
That’s an interesting argument.
! The time difference signifying different ways of speaking. The counterpoint is that Wano is a closed country, so there’s not really a reason why their manners of speaking would’ve changed to fit those of the rest of the world.
! The other argument is that the nine scabbards learned to speak formally when they underwent their training under Oden, so only the nine scabbards would speak so formally.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
As long as there’s some form of consistency. Maybe all the nine scabbards speak formally like that. Or all the citizens of Wano do. Give me something.
-
I just at the very least don’t think it’ll be the latter, it’s just kinda evident already from the official subs and manga translation, they use a lot more outdated honorifics and such. Like I don’t expect anyone besides the scabbards to call him “sir luffy” and such, cuz they don’t do the usual equivalent of “luffy-dono”.
-
I feel like most/all of the Wano characters speak like Kinemon, so I'm not sure I agree with you actually. I'm thinking Yasui, Hitetsu, Fukurokuju, the Kurozumis, the yakuza, even prominent citizens like Bingo all have phrasing that's a little more Japanese/formal in the manga. It's the Beast Pirates that don't sound like them, which of course makes sense. Maybe Tama is a little less so because she's a kiddo. Anyone on this forum understand Japanese? Would appreciate someone who speaks fluent Japanese to give their take on whether the characters in the sub speak with some sort of older Japanese accent or stressed formalism.
-
I've been enjoying the What's In My Head podcast for their Ed Edd n Eddy interviews, but it seems like they're getting some Funi actors involved as well, starting with Luci Christian:
-
She say anything worth reporting? I’ll listen if she talks about Nami.
-
Having Wano characters speak very formally or old-fashioned is fine, but letting mostly non-Japanese voice actors put on intentional Asian accents just to sound foreign is a no-no. Let's not open that can of worms.

Sure. Kin and Kanjuro were my examples; they aren’t putting on a stereotypical Asian accent.
-
No announcement for the new set yet, but I’m still betting on June 1st or 8th.
-
Its memorial day weekend, so we will probably wont hear a thing
-
Man, episode 695 had the flemmiest Luffy scream ever (as he runs up the stairs).
-
Welp, not today, eh? Hopefully next week.
-
Good catch! Wow. They’re only eight episodes from done, and they’re only two sets ahead. Wow. Seems super likely to me that they’ll need to take a break between seasons. Here’s hoping next Tuesday will be set seven.
-
I really wouldn’t say anything super confidently about future releases personally, but also of note today, Bryan Massey tweeted this and deleted it. Dragon gets lines in 737, so it’s almost certainly referring to that.

The embed fucked you with that so I'll just let people know that he posted a gif of Dragon with #TeaserTuesday lol
-
Fun. It's online and free?
-
Yep, I think you have to like register some kinda virtual ticket on their site but it’s all free.
-
Man, that episode of Usopp learning observation Haki was perhaps the slowest dubbed episode I’ve ever watched. Jesus that was tedious. Half the episode was two pages.
-
Getting concerned at this point. While it’s of course still possible voyage 7 will come out on 8th they normally would’ve made an announcement by now. I was kinda hoping voyage 5 taking 7 weeks was a one off but I think that may not be the case.
-
We’ll see. I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped it without an announcement. I don’t think they did an official announcement for the last one outside of a very quick mention during the simulcast event with Roger. And they’ve dropped it before without announcement.
No way to know, course. But I wouldn’t give up hope until Tuesday.
-
They did announce voyage 6 on twitter a few days before release. Obviously sometimes they don’t at all, but more often than not there’s some sorta announcement. Once again I just wish we knew more ahead of time like pre-hiatus.
-
Sets seven and eight are a little boring, but I’m looking forward to set nine! Kaido’s VA and bits of Zou and good OP mythology. It’ll be a great intro set to Zou.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Even if they release one a month without break (unlikely), it’ll still be over a year until we hit Wano. Bummer, but at least I’ll enjoy WCI and Zou way more than these sets.
