Well, I would say that place is a wretched hive of scum and villainy…..but it doesn't get hit with DMCA attacks, either.
-
OH THANK THE LORD
It's finally back.Someone get spoilers for 1003 up

@Johnny:
Well, I would say that place is a wretched hive of scum and villainy…..but it doesn't get hit with DMCA attacks, either.
I just checked it. They have themes for Marco and Ace, but not for Sanji. Definitely not a place for me.
-
So Oda commented about gear 5 this SBS
Was he serious about Luffy using gear 5th to take down Kaido or was it some kind of joke?
-
Can someone explain to me why Sanji getting the swim swim fruit makes sense?
And RIP Jinbe not getting listed as what devil fruit he would have. Guess he’s not considered part of the crew yet officially haha. And yes, I do think despite him being a fish man he should still be considered for this game.
-
Because he could get into any building/room he wanted.
It works for his unoficial shadow agent role in the StrawHats and his pervyness. -
A dust jacket scan from a Japanese blog:
Unfortunately, they've left off the cover flaps this time, so no Oda's comment or anything like that.
-
Finally Kaido's DF has been fully named, and as I called it before in prior posts (Im sure others have called it too), its the Uo Uo ni Mi: Model Seiryu (Azure Dragon). Question now remains if the other three sacred cardinal animals will get represented in some way, with Yamato being my first choice for the possible Byakko fruit.

Well, he's blue rather then red, but there is Marco.

I just realized how cool Izo looks in the cover.

Wait what the heck is up with those waves?
Editor: "These waves are crash lull crash! I said lull crash lull!"
Oda probably drew them as they are moving but whats the change and/or problem?

The foam is meant to be white and stand out, not shaded. They weren't redrawn.
Just like how the minks' eyes in sulong form are meant to be black instead of white. -
You know I knew that. I was only testing everyone. Very good!
-
I don't think it's just to give the waves nice whitecaps. If i'm not mistaken, that's Kaido's Blast Breath going off on top of the island in that panel, so it's probably more about making a lighting effect to emphasise that.

Thanks for the link! The dragon form Kaido fights all look so freaking good! This volume is going to rank highly among the series' best just for the sheer scale and detail of those spreads alone.

Shouldn't we have a Volume 99 discussion by now?

Shouldn't we have a Volume 99 discussion by now?
There is no official or leak announcement, do you want me to open it ?
-
Let's wait until we have at least a release date

I think it would be nice for us to guess cover, titles and chapters, but waiting for a release date may be ideal.

Oh man I hope the other three show up
I’m totally in agreement that Yamato has the Byakko devil fruit, and I can’t wait to see his green and blue tint hair mix with the white Tiger fur
But who would the other two be? I mean it’s pretty late in the game in Wano to introduce two more power houses that have mythical devil fruits isn’t it?
Only person with a turtle devil fruit I can think of is Pekoms, but that’s not the same as the mythical devil fruit
-
I would guess maybe late May or June for Vol. 99?

@Johnny:

July-August, most likely.
-
July-August, most likely.
I don't see why they'd wait that long when the volume is literally already finished. Only squeezing three volumes out in a year had a really noticeable impact on sales for the past two years, so I don't see why they wouldn't try as hard as possible to keep them coming out as quickly as possible to try and squeeze four in for this year.
Plus, I bet they'll want to rush to the volume 100 release and use that big milestone for a mini revival of chapter 1000-type celebrations.
-
Didn't they actually had this whole celebration 'Road to 100' prepared that was gonna lead to Volume 100's release in July?

Seems to have been the case.
!
But after Oda's illness pushed volume 98 back two months, it's hard to say where any of it's going to land now. If 99 hits in May, 100 could come out in August, only a month behind, which isn't too bad.
On the other hand, volume 99 is already done, and assuming ten chapters and the normal number of Odabreaks, volume 100 could be finished as early as the end of May. They could conceivably rush it to a July release if they really wanted. I don't think they will, but it remains within the realm of possibility.

Having devil fruits of the sacred an8mals would be fun, but I don't think they will appear. Pekoms is already a turtle df, and also overlapping with the mythical Lion Turtle.
But the cardinal animals for sure inspired the 4 Emperors. The color schemes seem to match (Kaidou blue dragon, Big Mom black turtle for her hard skin, Shanks is the red one and Whitebeard white)
-
Yeah, and the fire bird would overlap with Marco too.
-
Although it should be noted the Phoenix in the Four Heavenly Animals is a vivid shade of red, rather then blue.
-
Most depictions of Phoenixes are red. I don't know why Marco is blue. I guess to make his flames more distinct from regular flames.

To be fair, the Phoenix isn't one of the four cardinal animals. Many tend to make that mistake a lot because they are very similar in being both birds of fire. Its actually the Vermillion Bird, so it can be another bird with a unique flame-based power set of sorts. That and Marco's DF is more based on the western definition of the Phoenix. Adding to that, Marco's DF is called the Tori Tori no Mi - Model: Phoenix, not Model: Suzaku, like how Kaido's DF is the Uo Uo no Mi - Model: Seiryu, and not the Uo Uo no Mi - Model: Chinese Dragon.
More, Kaido's Seiryu fruit doesn't exactly hold to the mythology of the Azure Dragon. In mythology and symbolism, the Azure Dragon represents the element of Wood, which mostly manifests with the powers over Wind, as wood and air are synonymous with each other in asian elemental symbolism.
That said, however, Kaido has shown major control over wind and air in the previous few chapters, and one could say that his fire breath (or pressurized heated air / ionized gas), lightning strike attacks, and Icy hail in PW4 are all derived from the basis of air manipulation, as air can ignite fire, air can create lightning and air can become cold enough to create hail. This also works with the fact he has control over the weather and can manipulate storms, moreso than Big Mom. In that case, Kaido represents the Azure Dragon in full.
In other words, Oda can easily add the other three and play around with their mythical powers of Metal, Water and Fire.
Seeing as Kaido represents the Azure Dragon literally through his DF, I could see Shanks either having a Tori Tori no Mi - Model: Suzaku but in a twist, is consumed by his sword instead, or perhaps Shanks represents Suzaku in a symbolic manner and his sword has eaten a DF such as a possible Tori Tori no Mi - Model: Gryphon, capable of unleashing red lightning and transforming into a gryphon for Shanks to ride into battle, seeing as his sword is called Gryphon, and his crew is called the Red Haired Pirates.
Red Bird = Vermilion Bird
-
it uhhh feels kinda forced and that you guys are overlooking things just to suit the theory.
i mean, Kaido and his DF are obviously inspired by chinese mythos; but it doesn't apply to the rest…Whitebeard is more of a Poseidon inspired character (if we stick to the myth theme) and Big Mom is just a force of nature. we know too little about Shanks to really say anything, but his crew name most likely comes from his red hair...usually it's just that simple.
-
Honestly there's probably enough animal and color themed characters that you can make any animal/color related theory work with or without any stretching. Especially since some characters got multiple animals/colors.
-
I think that when Oda had to create the group of characters called "The 4 Emperors" he started with the template of the four animals. As the story progressed they became fleshed out characters of their own and had a distinct enough personality that it didn't match the original template anymore.

I could see Shanks being the red bird Zhuque.
The two remaining beasts being the white tiger and black tortoise correlate color-wise with Whitebeard and Blackbeard, and I guess Blackbeard is kind of turtle-like in the sense that he patiently waited decades for fate to fall in his favor.
The tiger is the king of the beasts in Chinese mythology and Whitebeard was definitely the most intimidating and legendary Yonko. -
I don't think the four emperors were based off them at all
I think Kaido definitely is, and I'm betting his son has the Byakko Zoan fruit
honestly I'm not expecting the other two to come into play, seeing as how late in the game we are in Wano to include two more mythical zoan users
But I do agree it would be cool if the other two showed up (even though I don't think they will)
-
I've always found it amusing that you have a dragon, a tiger, a phoenix….....and then a turtle. XD
Like, not even an alligator snapping turtle, just a friendly ol' sea turtle.
-
Genbu actually isn't a sea turtle. It's usually depicted as a land tortoise with a snake for a tail (or sometimes, the snake is a separate creature paired with the tortoise).
Still not super intimidating, but certainly no pushover.

Zhuque is actually different from a phoenix
and Xuanwu is not a sea turtle, more like a pond turtle, but definitely not just an ordinary one lol
at least better than a fish -

His flames are hitodama, like Rin from Ao no Exorcist

Oh cool! Where's this from? I didn't realise the version with Kaido's body was every fully coloured.
And now, five minutes of photoshop later, the cover we could have had:
I'll be honest, it feels pretty busy even by one Piece standards. I kinda get why it might've chosen to simplify it.
