Chapter 1,005: Demon Child
-
YES, a Robin chapter. Please Oda, push Brook away so Robin can have Black Maria 1v1.
A very enjoyable chapter!
-
I have no issue whatsoever with a strong man having to rely on a strong woman to deal with his weakness.
And I'm sure everyone will get their fight, some may even get more than one. There's still so much to unravel, we are nowhere near the end of this arc.
-
I'll let everyone else handle the Sanji stuff, but I'll let my thoughts be made clear on that with my review score of the chapter.
So. The chapter gets a massive boost for: Robin damaging an Officer level character of a very strong crew, and Jack getting back into action.
People can tell me it's "in character", but Sanji drags down the chapter a lot for me. I think there's plenty of other ways Oda could've handled this. I certainly also don't think Sanji needs to be this bloody. This is somewhat assuaged by the fact that there are multiple healers around, so maybe he'll get patched up.So due to the Robin part alone, I'd easily give the chapter a 9 or 9.5/10. Jack would've pushed it higher since he didn't HAVE to come back into action, but I knew he would because reasons. How Oda chose to handle Sanji's situation this chapter drops it down to a 7/10 for me.

I think depending on how Oda does things and the pacing the arc might not have as long as some of us think .
Like the fights can be done in 1 chapter and some of them being semi team battles would make it faster .
It the roof top fight and ending of the arc with how much info we can get i not certain about . -

Neither do I. What I do have a problem with is that the timeskip was meant for the Straw Hats to get stronger but the main thing it did to Sanji was amplify his weakness to women. It's not his conviction not to hit women because it's the chivalrous thing to do. It's the fact that even in this dire situation he can't help but think that this might be heaven.
To Sanji's credit he did try to run away. But maybe he should have focused on that instead of simultaneously beating up all of Black Maria's male goons while avoiding the women. We still could have gotten a scene where he frantically tries to get away because he knows it's not his fight to fight, eventually running into Robin and Brook who take over for him, showing that he trusts them to take care of it and that Robin especially knows how to handle herself. Oda could have made all three of them look badass, but he chose to focus on Robin, at the expense of Sanji. -

So sanji vs jack has anything to do with black power ranger having a mammoth zord…
-
This was a pretty cool chapter…
...though the Sanji scene is a pretty mixed bag for me. On one hand, it definitely seems like Oda's intention was for Sanji to intentionally cry out for help with the knowledge and faith that Robin was capable enough to handle Black Maria. Robin's affirmation of such was a great moment, and when you think about it, it's a very nice character development for Sanji who, in both Baratie and Whole Cake Island, thought it was better to take abuse and die rather than trust in his crewmates to help him. On the other hand, the scene still loses a bit of its oomph considering that Sanji's entrapment is almost entirely of his own design, and so for this development to happen now unfortunately has the implications of him being pathetic even if Oda wants to portray the "can't-hit-woman" thing in a positive light.
Still, I think the good outweighs the bad in that scene especially considering that it's Robin's time to shine baby! Seeing her flashing her badass, dark comedy persona was something that was long missed. And we have Brook along for the ride, who will certainly have things to say about Black Maria's womanly charms but not to as great of a degree as Sanji. And if the man Sanji can snap out of this and save the Scabbards from Jack, I daresay I won't have disdain for this scene at all.
-
My problem isn't Sanji relying on a crewmate (a woman on top!), but him being in that situation to begin with.
He knows very well that women are his supreme weakness. Yet he "abandonned" his captain and fell for such a dumb trap in the mdidle of a war against 2 emperors and needed to get bailed out for that.
I thought fishman island showed he could ignite himself on fire (Hell Memories) without even spinning, couldn't he have burn the spider web?
It's really cool Robin had such a great entrance after such a long time, and Sanji confidence in her ability to handle the situation. but as @Coookie and @Kaworu said I'm sure there were other ways to have these two things without making Sanji so pitiful. Yeah, I'm salty. -
Sanji runs away, Black Maria: "Come back here, Black Leg, I need you as a bait for Nico Robin", they end up running into her, cue Sanji's shocked face, BM: "Ha, you idiot, you brought me right to her after all", Robin bitchspanks BM, Sanji: "Joke's on you, she'll just beat you up herself"
This would've been so easy

**Eiichiro Oda
Koshizuka corn beef is so good it’s a problem. I’m having it at every meal. A big problem!**

5 stages of grief as Sanji’s fan in Chapter 1005
1. Furious -> when reading the text spoiler on Tuesday
2. Denial -> still don’t know why Oda’s put Sanji on trial. There are lot of possible scenario which doesn’t need to lead to this (Wed & Thu)
3. Bargaining -> Read at deeper lv. Understand Sanji’s awesome growth. Hoping that he’ll get redemption (Friday after scanlation released)
4. Acceptance-> the wise side of Sanji’s fan with deep insight (Saturday)
5. LOL -> laughing alongside Sanji’s fan and the internet There are too much to cover, we are on the same boat even with Hiroaki Hirata (Sunday after Official Release) -

He still needs to spin, Oda just doesn't draw the transitions anymore to cut down on panel time. Same with Luffy's gears or Choppers alt forms.
-
Anyway a big shoutout to Stephen Paul to make the things clearer this chapter, especially on Jinbei’s comment and Sanji’s Haki. He really takes the criticism positively then proof himself afterwards. Cool !

What about that time when they went to Fishman Island and Sanji activated Diable Jambe while underwater?
That time he charged at Doflamingo is debatable but to me it still looks like he activates Diable Jambe while midair -
10/10 for the much needed Robin hype, god that was so satisfying given how long we've been waiting. As for Sanji, a part of me was not into how long he was trapped, but this chapter having him openly plead with Robin to come and save him made me up warm to it. Nice unexpected reversal of roles that hyped up Robin while showing that Sanji's WCI developments didn't just magically vanish.
And as far as the cool factor goes, Black Maria is easily #1, which I wasn't expecting. Between the brass knuckles, badass weapon, and the tattoo, she has a really amazing aesthetic and vibe.
-

The water provided the needed friction, obviously!
That he and Luffy did fire moves underwater at all is… a thing.
-
I was assuming it would be Sanji vs. Queen, but Sanji vs Jack seems probably now. If it does happen, i can't wait for all the people saying that Sanji isn't hurt as much as Jack.

Lol, you know it's coming. Sanji beating any Calamity period would be fantastic as far as I'm concerned

The heat aspect of Diable Jambe can still make sense but Red Hawk's actual flames are highly questionable, yeah. But impressive, to use a fluid as a source of friction, he must've spun over 9000
-
Sanji taking on the original highest ranked subordinate of kaidou that has been around since 5 years ago, conquered zou, fought naval battles with sengoku and fujitora, was there as last line of defense protecting kaidou from scabbards on roof and defeating mink country twice, is way more hype then the other two that have been around only for 1 year or less and didn't get to do much. Like queen did something recently, but king is background noise, and is on his phone most of the time during the war like some instagram queen. Jack felt like mini kaidou and proper right hand man and was introduced right after kaidou's crazy introduction.
-
can't wait for all the people saying that Sanji isn't hurt as much as Jack.
What are you talking about?
Jacku is back and FULLY HEALED thanks to Zoan Regeneration
-
One of the more feminist chapters yet, I love it.
-
Jacku is adorable. That is all
-
My understanding is also that he definitely doesn't need to spin anymore. How, I'm not sure, but a lot of scenes definitely have no room for "Oda skip the spinning" interpretations.
The fight against Judge is a great example of that. The Poêle A Frire technique is a big sign for me that he gained some way to control the heat at will. I hope his next fight will finally clear up his post-TS DJ improvement.
The anime also stopped adding the spins and show him turn his leg on fire at will. I don't think they would do that without Oda's approval (it seems they had to receive some notes to correct their previous mistakes since early post-TS episodes had spins added).
As for the current situation, I won't say it's an inconsistency yet since next fight Oda might finally explained the new DJ properly. But it could just be that his haki being weakened by facing a woman prevents him from using his new DJ.

As I said in the spoiler thread, I feel Queen vs Sanji is more likely than Jack vs Sanji. With the scabbards in peril and the chance of Hiyori being with them, I could see Yamato rushing to the rescue and fighting Jack.
So, here's some craziness: maybe we do have a brief Jack vs Sanji, enough for Queen and Yamato to arrive. We get a Sanji reaction to Yamato, Queen reckognizes Komurasaki (he's a fan). Yamato vs. Jack, Sanji vs Queen.
Why Yamato vs. Jack may make sense:
- Some people have speculated that the former Jack may be Yamato's mentor figure. Yamato fighting the current Jack could have some meaning to both of them.
- Kaido has shown some concern and respect for Jack. Maybe Jack is the "son" Kaido wishes Yamato were?
- Yamato fighting to protect Oden's servants is poetic. A comparison to Oden boiling while lifting all of them.
- Momo is with Yamato. Hyiori (or Toki) is with the scabbards. That reunion would be interesting to see.
And Sanji vs Queen:
- Cyborg vs Raid Suit
- Queen has noticed Sanji's bounty and heritage
- Queen is a pervert.
- Sanji fights to protect Hiyori/Komurasaki
Edit: (Not to mention Sanji's reaction to Yamato, then finding out Momo is hiding in his/her chest, lol)
-
I forget, did spider femme know that Sanji was brain damaged and set up this whole trap around that? Or did she just make an ordinary trap and luck out with having female minions?
-

Lucked out. She had already caught a few samurai, Sanji was the latest victim

Yamato is so far away this seems unlikely. The castle itself is on the other half of the island and his priority right now is Momo's safety, so he may run the other way so he doesn't get spotted by all the eye mask people.
-
We all know how it's going to be with Jack, when Sanji gets to the Scabbards Jack will already be dealt with by the person who's with them right now.
Neither Jack nor Sanji are going to have any real fights, and will only be used as punching bags. :ninja: -
Yeah, Oda isn't quite done with the Musical Chairs of Match-Ups just yet. Queen is suspiciously gone. Jack and Sanji is going to meet, but might not even fight eachother. Fukurokuju is around, 5 numbers haven't been shown yet, the Big Mom Pirates, and Plus the Carrot/Wanda and Perospero stuff.
I guess we'll the match ups settled relatively soon, just not now.
-
I'll never get the people who hate on Sanji still. He's easily gone from one of the worst to one of the best characters post-ts. Lot of major differences in what's happening here compared to what happened with Kalifa. And thank god Robin is finally getting some action, she's barely gotten any spotlight that doesn't involve poneglyphs. Now just get Brook to fight Apoo and give us the dream Chopper vs Queen fight and this whole raid will be 10/10.
-

They may or may not fight but i simply do not see Sanji beating Jack.
Jack has shown he's got insane durability. He survived his encounter with Fujitora/Sengoku, survived after his fleet got smashed to pieces by Zunisha. Fought against an army of minks for 5 days straight, and then the battle
at the top.
I don't see what Sanji has that can put him down.He should be facing Page One
-

Jack might be a calamity on paper, but its more a running joke. Sanji beating Jake is similiar to him defeating a random gifter; its a foregone conclusion, which did not even deserve any panel space so late in the arc.

I don't remember any random gifter taking on both rulers of the Minks for 5 days straight or having a billion berri bounty on their head
Jack isn't losing to Sanji.
It was only several weeks ago in OP time when Luffy barely managed to get past Cracker with help of Nami's rain softening up his biscuits, and unless Sanji got a major powerup in that time, yeah no.
-

Good for you if you enjoy post-TS Sanji, I'll take tricking Crocodile into leaving his casino, asking Enel for fire after being electrocuted by him, secretly messing with Enies Lobby's levers to open the Gates of Justice, Mr. Prince over walking nosebleed, shin cracking, relying on his family's tech that he just renounced shortly before, Vinsmoke Sanji any time.
-
I love it when Nico Robin gets some time to shine.
Momonosuke is a lucky little bastard.
It doesn't pay to be a simp, Sanji.
-
I could see this act ending with the flying six, the all stars and Kaido all showing there hybrid forms
Not exactly tragedy like people want but more of a “holy shit we were having trouble with them before and now there in a stronger form, how the hell can we win now”
-
Why Yamato vs. Jack may make sense:
Some good points, but Yamato and Momo going to the top and helping out the others is still more likely, imo. Momo and Yamato have some MAJOR beef with Kaido. And I think there is just no time for the Wano MCs this arc to squabble with Jack.
-

This is a pretty ridiculous take but you do you

Jack isn't losing to Sanji.
Not sure which Calamity Sanji will ultimately fight, but idk what you're expecting to happen here given all the other Tobi Roppos are preoccupied…
-
I'm conflicted.
On one hand it would be so easy for Sanji to handle the situation himself without looking like a chump (I mean come on, the whole place is covered in virtually indestructible sticky webs just waiting for a clever protagonist to trick his enemies into!).
On the other, if it leads to an actual proper fight for Robin after all these years then it's totally worth it. -

I doubt you're referring to me but I'll say it anyway. I love Sanji, he's one of my favourites, which but there are things which annoy me and i just want to see him face a super tough enemy and show off how strong
he's gotten. Since the timeskip we've not even seen what he can do at all, other than his geppo type skill.I want more. I want Oda to let him shine.

Ther is no way Ussop and Nami are taking on Page One and Ulti. I can see them both taking out 1 of them with a combined effort. Which leaves Page One for Sanji to finish things off from last time.
He's not at the level of Jack-Queen-King
Plus it seems Marco has dibs on King as of now. -

I like Yamato vs Jack under the pretense of Jack wanting Kaido's approval as his "unofficial son" as some people were saying in the spoiler thread. The mentor route would be a bit weird since Yamato and Jack are the same age.

Nami and Usopp are on their rematch with the duo, now aided by Tama. Nami has also pretty much laid out the type of firepower necessary to beat Ulti. Seems clear to me where this is going.
As for Sanji, simple math. All the Tobi Roppo have their opponents. Jinbe is not switching with anyone most likely now that Brook is helping with Black Maria. And Sanji helping the weaker members beat a Tobi Roppo would be overkill given his raid suit performance against Page One. The point is that aside from arguably Jinbe, they're all going to be pushed to their limits to defeat their respective foes.

I was quite vocal about nosebleed Sanji, about how terrible it was and the way it brought down the manga. But that was like ten years ago. He hasn't been even a fraction as bad as that since he left for Zou. Yeah he still gushes over girls, but not in such an overdramatic fashion. And he can stay focused when he needs to, ie all the Pudding and cake stuff. He actually treated her with a respectful attitude and understanding of her character. And I love that he's actually bringing a woman into harm's way, as he knows she can cover his weakness and take care of herself. He's not going full white knight this time and is getting out at the right time to do something more fitting for him before he's beaten by spider lady. Like others have said, it's like that speech he gave at Enies Lobby.
And all the Vinsmoke stuff has been a positive. It shows he doesn't cling to all his hang-ups, and he's become stronger for it. Plus it goes both ways - his family was giving him more respect by the end of Whole Cake, in their own way. People like to paint them as one-note goons, but they and their relationships with Sanji were just really interesting to me.
Don't know why you would hold on to the shin thing, he's obviously very powerful, even moreso now that he has a raidsuit as part of his character progression. It makes him feel more human in a sense, as he comes off as the most "normal" of the emperor top dogs, like he actually had prove himself of being worthy of being way up there and is always the one a bit behind. And the fact that he does take some hits at times and gets right back up, and can become invisible and move at high speeds, plus the bullet proof cape and haki, makes him a highly viable tank.
-
A lot of the things with Sanji wouldn't come off as so bad to the fanbase if Oda didn't put his precious little Zoro-kun on a pedestal. But ironically enough, by doing so, Zoro really hasn't had the character development Sanji has had at all.
-

%100.
If there's one major disappointment in Wano so far, it's how Zoro got almost nothing in terms of character moments and development, which is something a Samurai Island was best placed to facilitate.
-
His state of mind seems worse. Back at EL or WCI he could at least muster some sort of defense. But now he's like oh no what if my desire to not die die hurts their knuckles i could not live with that. Even Zeff must be thinking dude get some professional help, i just wanted you to not hit women. But i mean i like the asking for help bit, make this a they trapped him fair and square and he was man enough to ask for help scenario and i would have zero problem with it. I just dislike the flanderized dumbness used to put him in that position in the first place.
