Chapter 1,000 wasn't enough, the epicness goes on.

Come to think about it, Volume 99 ends with Chapter 1,004, right?
I wonder what we will get in Volume 100.
No chapter next week.

The translation make what Kaido saying very different when see those guys in the back ground .
Yo, can we have the name of Kid's DF already? It's about time, I guess.
Side-Note: I don't think Jellyfishes are comfy.
It was great to see everyone in action. Zoro is who I'm most curious about, because his attack didn't seem to the level that he would make against a Yonkou. It was great to see Luffy not taken out by Thunder Bagua and I'm loving Kaido's attitude. Man, this two weeks is going to be long as hell.
The translation make what Kaido saying very different when see those guys in the back ground .
Yep, I like the official one way better as it doesn't limit the ones capable of fighting Kaido to only those.
Instead, it's Kaido asking himself if Luffy is able to reach the top.

Yep and then you see him smiling afterwards which also seem more inline with his character and what going on in the chapter .

Yep, it´s like the representative stages Luffy can reach both in terms of strength and accomplishment.
Is he gonna be an Oden, or reach Shanks, or Rocks, or reach the strength of WB and Roger, or become PK just like Roger?
Pretty nice chapter. It being focused entirely on one scene was very refreshing.
Not much difference from the scans, but I did like Kaido's ending dialogue better in the scanlations. I wonder though….why has Kaido's laugh not been corrected? I thought it was going to be "Uorororo" instead of "Worororo".
Still a great chapter nonetheless and Kid, Law and Luffy's banter as usual, is hillarious.
I like how Kid makes a big badass metal demon and still prioritizes punches.
Like I said in the spoilers thread, that comment from Kidd pretty much solidifies in my eyes the fact that he too, albeit begrudingly, will be Luffy's underling by the end of the arc. He laughed so much at Law being one that his fate can't but follow in step.
What a fun chapter. Been continuing my reread and got through Sabaody just as this chapter hit. I'm loving that I get similar vibes.
The interaction between these characters is just the greatest. When Big Mom first teamed up with Kaido I was worried they'd feel way too powerful, but seeing how much their interactions make this fight dynamic I'm really happy Oda made that decision.
It´s funny that with all the bravado Kid showcases, what convinces Killer of their prospects to win is Luffy´s display of power.
Kind of representative for Kid´s entire pirate career.

Kaido's laugh in Japanese is ウォロロロ, when the O kana (オ) is small after the U kana that typically denotes a "Wo" sound. So the wordplay is still there, but not formatted in quite the same manner.
Man, the spreads in this chapter were amazing. The chicken game between Luffy, Kidd, and Law made me laugh.
And Kaido finally gets around to doing the obligtory -What! How can this be? I used to be stronger than this shounen hero line. Fancy haki does what it's supposed to

He's like okay so i have given this a lot of thought. What about if i hit him from both sides? His final form will literally be a mega size fist, we've all been calling it. Just deliver on it Oder!
Incredible chapter. The amount of times I've re-read it is insane. Another 10/10 for me, and my standards for those are a lot higher now that we're past 1000.
If you would've told me the 3 Supernova lined up at Sabaody would've led to this back in 2008ish, I wouldn't have believed you.

To his credit he was trying to crush him more than punching him lol .
I still don't see how they will bring Kaido down. Let alone him and Mom together. I mean he just let them hit him and he's fine.
Hopefully the dragon form performs better now.

Thank you so much for all the congratulations on the day I finished chapter 1000. Thank you so much to all the authors in issue 5/6.**

It's meant to have that oppressive feeling, this is still 5 hotshot pirates vs 2 grizzled veterans.
From what I can tell, Kid and Killer have the least chance of damaging him. Maybe they'll go against Big Mom? Who is also considered an "iron balloon" in terms of physical defense?
I'm mainly worried about Luffy's Haki exhaustion with Ryuuou, I think that'll determine a lot if he starts using it with Gear 4.

The dragon form is his jobber form. He never did anything worthwhile in that form. So expect our heroes to get decent hits while he is in that form.

On the other hand you have Law saying “I’ll go inside the body and deliver a surgical death”, but then proceeds to throw a bunch of rocks at Kaidou.
I wonder when we’ll get to focus on events outside Wano. Oda alluded to shanks moving by volume 100 in the new year message. So this part of the fight will go on for another 10 chapters?

Doesn't surgery often involve cutting people open with sharp objects?

You have to cut open the body first.
Personally i'm not sensing too much dread or a feeling of being overwhelmed. I mean they cared so little about BM's attack that they made a whoever flinches first loses game

Big Mom is Buggy of Yonkou, everyone knows that.
Really great chapter in terms of action and humor. One of my favorite things about One Piece is that no matter what going on, Oda can always find a way to inject humor into any situation.
Also pretty good for those pressed over powerscaling. From how Luffy would deal with Kaido's attacks, and vice-versa for Kaido dealing with Future Sight, to what the others are actually capable of doing against Kaido's inherent defense, all of it had a logical answer to it.
Nothing to do with the chapter, but what do you think is going to be the next cover stories series? The last arc was still Whole Cake, so maybe Pekoms rescuing Pedro? Finally discovering where Cesar Clown will run off to? Or something unexpected, like Shanks
I wonder if Garp is in that list of people who can potentially hurt Kaido? Him not being in the backdrop gives me pause, but all of the ones on their also happen to be pirates.
Great chapter! Full of action.

New Adventures of Buggy: A clown in the New World
I remember someone in the spoiler thread mentioning the old World Government logo on Kid's robot, but I don't see it anywhere. Can someone point it out to me?

I'll just quote myself from the spoiler thread.
Either way Garps reputation is beyond reproach. If he thwacks you on the head you get an owie at least or experimental cosmetic surgery at worst
Garp is clearly a master fistler, a legend in the fistific arts, if you can think of it he can love fist it. He's the fist guy Kidd wishes he was. Y'know what now i'm rooting for Kidd, he's clearly just trying to punch the shit out of world like his idol. He's his Rock Lee limiting himself to the noble art of hand to face smashing. Good on him i say, Kidd you recovered nicely from being a brooding smug punk thanks to some good ol fashioned headcanon
I want to ask if anyone else has this weird feeling about the fight? Like, obviously Kaido has to be defeated, so Wano can finally be free and all, but like, it just seems still too early for him to be beaten?
I don't know how to describe it, but it feels like a Lv. 45 hero taking on a Lv. 90 boss or something.

I wasn't even aware the WG had an old logo.
Chapter 1000 was great, and the start of the Kaido and Big Mom fight is unquestionably a momentous event, but there was, in hindsight, a feeling that the chapter wasn't completely for us, the up-to-date dedicated readers. Oda chose to restate important themes and goals for the series, the Will of the D, the rise of the next generation and Luffy aiming to be King of the Pirates in a way that was fitting and appropriate, yeah, but also likely went a long to illustrate to new readers who flipped through to see what was going on with all the chapter 1000 hype what the heart of the series is, and remind readers who fell off the bandwagon before but checked back in for the milestone that it hadn't lost sight of what it was always meant to be. It was a great story showcase chapter, which was a good choice for one that would get so much attention. Chapter 1001 on the other hand, is pure action fanservice for the longtime fans from start to finish.
Strange seeing Kaido so happy for most of this chapter. With the moustache there, some of the close-ups of his mouth were giving me Roger vibes. It's good seeing him show a bit more personality as well. The strong guy who gets caught up in the thrill of the battle and even encourages his opponents when they pose a challenge is hardly a new anime archetype, but it definitely suits One Piece more than the stony-faced immovable object Kaido has been for most of this arc.
Zoro stealing Kin's move was a nice throwback to Punk Hazard. I wonder if we'll see him go up against Kaido's blast breath as well. Also loved the bickering between the three captains.
I'm not as huge a fan of Kaido asking Big Mom to stand back for half the chapter. I'm curious to see more of this fight as a real multi-threat team-up battle. It'll be a lot less exciting if one of the big hitters is literally just waiting her turn on the sideline. Hopefully it's just for the power showcase in this chapter though.
And what a showcase it is! The art is pretty unclear about how much damage Zoro and Killer were actually able to do, but from pained grunt and subsequent congratulation on the next page, I'd say they managed cause him pain, even if they weren't able to break the skin. Could end up being like Luffy vs Katakuri, where they're on the cusp of developing the skills they need and pull themselves up over the course of the fight. Kid and Law have their own approaches to Kaido's defences. Kid seems to think that even if his skin doesn't break, crushing wounds could do internal damage, and my initial reaction to this was to think he should know better after witnessing Kaido survive the fall from Balloon Terminal. How could he expect to to apply more pressure than the moment of impact after a sky island fall? But Kaido did get out of that crater with a splitting headache, and he makes another pained noise here, so there's some genuine merit to the approach. Haki levels are rarely the be all and end all of fights in this series, so it's good to see Oda showing other possible approaches even at this late stage. Law is taking a similar approach, but it remains to be seen what it takes to repel the energy-based Gamma Knife. It got inside Doflamingo without leaving a wound, but Kaido's dragon scales and haki are both far beyond anything Doffy could pull.
Also, is it just me, or do the fingers on the left hand of Kid's (absolutely sick looking) mech look pretty unfinished in the panel where he crushes Kaido? Looking forward to that getting fixed up in the volume.
The final spread is already one of my favourites of Wano. The scale, the detail, the nightmarish threat level of Kaido and Big Mom as a tag-team. I could look at this thing for hours. I was expecting the many social media artists who usually colour their favourite bits from new chapters to be all over this spread, but I've yet to see one that does it justice. Maybe it's just taking a while because of the level of detail. I think this one's going to be great in the digital colour manga when it finally gets here.
The Odabreak is a bitter pill to swallow after all the Christmas and New Years delays, but hey, one more off week and then the schedule should start looking a little more normal.
Oh, and wasn't the final version of volume 98 cover meant to drop today? I kind of expected it to be put out at the same time as the chapter, but here I am, still waiting…

Oh! I see it!
People are looking at the back of Kid's mech here
And thinking it looks like the old symbol in the straw hat room under Mariejoa here, speculated to be their former logo before the current flag
But I think it's more likely it's intended to invoke the Kozuki family crest
(Maybe there's a case to be made for an ancient Wano and World Government connection based on the similarities in the designs, but at this point it's such a minor detail any theories along those lines would probably come out more tinfoil hat than straw hat. Maybe toward the end of the arc when we learn more about Wano's ancient history, why it closed its borders and what it was doing before they were closed there be more things of substance to say on the matter.)

Thanks for sharing, that's definitely the best one I've seen. Props to the artist.
I think making the whole sky black darkens the image a little too much but I certainly couldn't do any better.

Agreed. I think the x factor would have to be a DF awakening, someone else jumping in to help even things out, or Big Mom and Kaido eventually turning on one another and it then becoming a free for all. Something's gotta give because I doubt even the three admirals can take on both at once. Right now, only Luffy appears to be close to admiral level.
I wonder if Garp is in that list of people who can potentially hurt Kaido? Him not being in the backdrop gives me pause, but all of the ones on their also happen to be pirates.
The viz translation put things into perspective, Kaidou basically looks at opponents he faced or admires under the battle for PK banner more or less, and then asks how far Luffy can go as an opponent, Oden, maybe even Shanks, or even above that. Hence obviously he compares them to people who he has a very good grasp on in comparison to himself, from guys who are dangerous to him, to guys who can match him (Shanks) to people even above. Hence why seeing Big Mom makes no sense either, or Blackbeard, let alone non-pirates.
The statement about who can fight him and the shadows are not necessarily related.
But yeah, we know what you need to fight Kaidou, there are a lot more who have the necessary Haki other than the 5 shown.

Not really, i feel Oda came up with a somewhat satisfying solution, Kaidou is so durable you need a special ability to beat him (advanced Haki) but after that it´s fair game. It´s somewhat unoriginal (since we had the same with Logias, only on a lower level) but it explains how he is supposed to be invincible for anybody not belonging to the greatest of the world.
Based on the reactions of zolo and kidd to luffy's advanced haki, it does look like only luffy and law will heavely wound kaidou. Law because of his ''anything goes'' no mi, and luffy with internal damage mixed with gear 4 attacks. Gear 4 internal damage Man!

I get the feeling that more people will popping in as the battle progresses if only so that Oda doesn’t have to constantly be switching out to see what other characters are doing. This is a battle that might very much take several hours, if not, days. I suppose some people would prefer if it was a one on one battle between Luffy and Kaido, reasoning that it’s more personal and dramatic that way, but as long as Big Mom is there, at the very least, then I really don’t imagine Luffy doing this alone for the majority of the fight.

Another reason why he could well do this is to add enough exceptions to "fuzzy the logic" of the Supernovas beating the Yonko.
Because right now he is trapped between either giving the Supernovas a victory (which would severely ruin the tension of any future fights, given that said victory will make them the new emperors), or giving them a defeat and essentially nullifying all the sacrifices that the Wano ppl made for Luffy to get this far, something he just recapped last chapter.
Killer being present in the fight feels so awkward. I get the symbolic nature of having the new generation of Pirates challenge the Yonko (I've actually wanted this) but what does Killer have to offer in regards to posing a danger to the Yonko?
Zoro is bonding with Enma and will eventually cut Kaido who will consequently be reminded of Oden and become mentally uncentered.
Kid, while focused on a brute force approach, could utilise magnetism on a molecular level to combat his opponents. I wonder if Oda will allow Kid's powers to work in such a manner.
Law has the ultimate Devil Fruit capable of turning him into an end boss within his room.
Luffy has advanced Haki and has been training these past two years to combat opponents like the Yonko and Admirals. Luffy is also a D (whatever that means exactly…).
So what does Killer have? From Killer's previous battle with Zoro before, he didn't seem that special. Sure he didn't have his "Punishers" but would that have really made much of a difference? Is he like a Jedi without his lightsaber when not using his weapons?
As for Kaido, I'm surprised he didn't list Big Mom and Garp as fighters who could challenge him. Has Kaido never seriously fought with Linlin or Garp before? If so, given that Rocks is listed, Kaido must have fought him before at one point before joining his crew. I like how all the characters in that panel are smiling save Shanks who is the only one currently still alive.
Kaido truly is a beast. Even a casual attack from him has Luffy straining his Kenbunshoku Haki and reaction speed. This makes me wonder how tough Yamato is to have endured beatings like that or worse from Kaido every time a challenge was made and lost. I suspect Yamato also possesses advanced Haki developed through the many fights against Kaido.
It appears through this battle Kaido will slowly be exhausted facing off the new generation of Pirates and Yamato to be eventually defeated in the end by Luffy who utilises a new form or attained power. The fight won't be decided in a one VS one manner.
As for Kaido, I'm surprised he didn't list Big Mom and Garp as fighters who could challenge him. Has Kaido never seriously fought with Linlin or Garp before?
Like Miyamoto I think the viz translation made more sense in this regard. Kaido "shows" us his imaginery tier of powerful pirates, reaching from Oden to Xebec, while Shanks is the only one that makes sense as the Yonkou-tier reference.
The absence of Big Mom is easily explained with their close relationship. It doesn't matter that Kaido pissed himself when Linlin attempted to raid Wano or their day-long battle that followed. In the end she's just Linlin - his big dumb sister.
And Blacky is just half a Yonkou based on feats. Just like Luffy.
How tragic it would be for Kaido if Linlin eventually ends up betraying him.
Hopefully that doesn't happen and Kaido is defeated through the efforts of the alliance and other characters that synergise their abilities with the heavy hitters against Kaido (and Big Mom).
This is my favorite Chapter in all of One Piece! Something I've never been able to say about part 2 of One Piece (not even for my beloved Dressrosa arc). Hands down, this is the best. The awesome battle, the hilarious moments that make me love One Piece above all other manga…this has it all in One chapter!!!!!
