Oh man. Is his character from Mouse Hunt going to make a comeback?
-
I'm pretty sure the right thing to compare is Rocky and Bullwinkle.

I just got done watching the 1977 Rankin/Bass version of the Hobbit and…it was pretty dang good? I was honestly surprised how much I liked it. The animation is limited, some of the designs - Smaug especially - is a bit weird, and the frequent songs are an acquired taste...but it has real atmosphere, great performances, the big scenes hit home, and after what the Peter Jackson trilogy turned into, a breezier more whimsical version of the story was just what I wanted. Recommended, if people ever come across it.
-
That's an old classic. I fucking love the animation style.
-
On the subject of character designs, I'm not sure what the deal with Cat Smaug was or a Thranduil that looked more like a goblin than an elf, but Gollum is one that has a decent explanation in that a lot of illustrated versions, particularly those that were drawn before the rewritten version of The Hobbit that followed The Lord of The Rings came out, depicted him as a froggish creature. Another common trend was to draw him as being absolutely massive compared to Bilbo but that didn't happen here.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Now that I think about it, Cat Smaug might be the result of a character designer interpreting the horns in Tolkien's drawings of Smaug as being little cat ears.
-
I grew up watching the Rankin/Bass Hobbit. Yes, the character designs are odd (that's a Rankin/Bass thing), but it's still good. Their Return of the King (intended to finish what Baskshi couldn't), not so sure about. But maybe worth it for "Where There's a Whip, There's a Way".
-
I always think of three scenes whenever anybody brings up that one.
- Where There's A Whip, There's a Way. Obviously.
- A Nazgul flying in and having his steed perch on a castle we just watched completely collapse.
- And this,
because of what happens near the very end. The whole thing needs to be watched to get the full effect.

Even post-LOTR, there's plenty of foreign editions that depict Gollum as froglike or even larger than Bilbo.
I'm always partial to the froggish or ichtiyic version because I always get a Caliban-vibe from Gollum, intentional or not.

Hullabaloo is still going. They are like 95% done and estimate that the first two shorts will be done by February.
Finishing stuff like this:
-
Oh my. What is that?

The trailer for Lone Gone Gulch from a couple years ago popped up as a recommended video for me on Youtube the other day; guess that's why.

The Secret of Kells/Song of the Sea folks have another one that JUST came out.
They also apparently did another one in 2017 I totally missed, The Breadwinner.
-
Wolfwalkers is easily the best of the bunch (and I was in awe with Song of the Sea)
-
I would love to watch this movie, but it seems it's only on one streaming service, which is a shame. I would buy it because it looks interesting.
-
I saw Wolfwalkers in theaters through a Fathom event and it's really wonderful. I especially love the illustrated storybook style it had.
The Breadwinner is also extremely good and shows that Cartoon Saloon can branch out in other types of films.
-
Secret of Kells - Good from a technical aspect, but…I dunno. I didn't really get it.
Song of the Sea - Very lovely movie. Has a timeless fairy tale feel to it.
The Breadwinner - I remember loving it when I watched it, but honestly barely remember any of it now. I should rewatch it.Haven't seen Wolfwalkers, but I'll definitely check it out as soon as it becomes more...available.

Maybe it resonates more if you have a Celtic heritage? I dunno, but it gave us this scene which I absolutely love:

Netflix just released Hilda Season 2 out of nowhere!
-
I saw a clip of the first episode of S2 and decided to give a try. Really nice series, very comfy and good folklore lesson.
! I know that is meaningless but I think the Bell Keeper is Johanna's ex.
And Ahlberg is a glory seeking douche. -
Wolfwalkers was an incredible movie and something I'd comfortably recommend to anyone? Gorgeous art and animation, the main characters are a joy to watch, interesting story and plotting and it has these little touches all over the place in the staging, direction and design that just push it over the top. I'm already feeling nostalgic for it and I watched it like a week ago? It gud, very gud.
-
Talk about cliff hanger sish. Any one know were to find the Hilda comics to read?

Been wanting to watch it but I keep hearing it's only on Apple TV. Is this the case, or is there somewhere else where it can be seen?

Another little update from Hullabaloo:
Again not learning much from these, but it's interesting to see some of the animation process from it. And once it's finished that looks to be a cool race scene.
-
Time and time again, I have to wonder at how many hours a few seconds of animations takes to get finished. I can only watch in awe~

I think the same thing with claymation.

Here's the pilot
-
That eye showdown scene was one of the best thing to come out in animation since the 21st century started.
-
They Eye Showdown was goodly. Is this kinda of nonsense humor we need not TTG.
-
People are freaking out over this, and it's cool to see more ambitious indie animated pilots come out. The art and animation are really good as promised, but I feel like the writing is just a complete mess. The pacing and progression in the episode are kinda awful, the character writing feels very inside or incomplete because it seems like they expect us to know more about them than we possibly could in a pilot, the dialogue and jokes are in dire need of punching up, and many of the payoffs are just lacking setup. It's fine for a pilot to be rough around the edges, the main thing it needs to do is set up the characters, setting and tone, but by the end of it I felt like I hardly understood or enjoyed any.
I'm hoping that if they get a shot at making this a full scale production, that hiring more new writers will help with those issues. I got the impression that a lot of it stumbled because the writers were very inside and were having difficulty writing for people who didn't already know the world and characters more intimately, so having some outside voices might bring out the potential of this concept. I hope so because there is good potential here, but they have a ways to go if they want to live up to it.
-
Not Hazbin Hotel-good, but I was highly amused.
But like Wagomu said, the writing was choppy and the world building is lacking. And maybe it's me, but I feel like Snag sticks out like a sore thumb. But that Eye Showdown was awesome.

I think that was really the problem, if my mind don't fail me, ever since I first saw the concept on /co/ ( the beginning of the kickstarter) till the pilot it's been 5 years. 5 years of creators giving small nibbles of world building and animation to keep the project alive, so the one that backed it up or closely followed are to be far more into it than we.
I still found it amusing, but I agree on the flaws you mentioned, for a 5 year project it could've been more polished.

Just finished season 3 of Disenchantment.
Still dull as all hell.
! Bean had a relationship with a mermaid and she's queen now, so I guess there's that.
! And for god's sake, does every season have to end with Bean being caught in some trap by her evil mother that will ultimately have a disappointing resolution? -
Redwall is getting a new animated adaptation.

Yup, great show. I found Kid annoying sometimes but he really is the spirit of the team.

im surprised no one posted this yet
Demon Pupper.

Kid Cosmic is a great Netflix cartoon
Also Clone High is getting 2 Seasons on HBOMAX -
This is a bit late to bring up, but pop-culture site The Avocado has an animation-themed monthly challenge going, where theres a discussion prompt each day. Its been neat so far, and I know I got a few new filsm added to my Watchlist from the discussion on eurasian animation
The Avocado is pretty chill and fun place for discussions in general, come on over
-
Speaking of HBOMAX, here is the first look of the upcoming Aquaman series.
It's by the Roar team! Looking good so far, some people are complaining about Aquaman's hair color (???) but honestly seapunk Aquaman is such a good choice and I'm glad they went with it! I can't wait to see how the action turns out, since that was a real highlight to Roar.
