Way to go, Denji ! Show your friends some love :ninja:
Goddamn that chapter hurt
Fuck this shit!
How good was this chapter, really!? From the moment Makima announced what she was going to do, I became so tense I started scrolling through the pages at a glacial pace. I actually scrolled back when I got to the page Denji is watching Makika's head from behind and only then I realized I was avoiding advancing through the chapter.
What I mentioned above makes this chapter a great example of two things: first, when a lot of people question why readers are "so obsessed with death" and why they keep wanting writers to kill the characters instead of bringing them back to life - you can't get the effect I mentioned above unless the reader truly believes a character can die and be gone forever once that happens; second, why I think manga is SO much better than anime - you can't affect the anime's rhythm, but your reading's rhythm will be dictated by your own eagerness or fear to advance, making the experience so much more personal (not to mention motion being in charge of your imagination instead of the animation team).
On a more personal note, for nearly 2 years now I've been annoyed by how so many people (particularly here in Brazil) seemed to, for some reason, reached a point where they decided to stop thinking and deciding for themselves. I've watched people I used to admire repeat the most unbelievable stuff, stuff a couple years ago they would laugh at (there is a guy at my work who truly believes Earth is flat and the moon is a hologram. I have no doubt five years ago he wouldn't even believe me if I said someone in the world had such belief). So it's really interesting to see Denji going that way and what consequences it may bring.
Anyways, a part of me wants Power to get out of this (and technically the possibility exists) because I love the character, but at the same time I hope she doesn't because we need death to be definitive for moments like this to work.
p.s.: I advise rereading the first two chapters. Lots of callbacks.
p.p.s.:
Well… my heart hurts now.
Bravo. What an awesome chapter. This series has such a strong grip on how to explore character's struggles and feelings, and passing those on to the reader. It's by wide margin the best thing that's come out of WSJ in the last three years (at least discounting Act-age due to its scandalous end).
We are constantly being reminded that the author also did Fire Punch.
We are also constantly reminded the Fujimoto wants parfaits, to the point he made his own but still craves for the store ones. All that happened this year in Chainsawman is due to his parfait abstinence.
Makima killing the competition lol
And just like that, the number 1 popular character in the series die
If Angel's belief is correct, though, Power was just reborn in Hell.
I would support a new saga of Denji going rogue to rescue the Blood Devil from Hell.
At some point I have to question where the series goes once every character in the series except the MC and the main villain are dead.
Like yea death is good and all to keep stakes high, but how are you going to keep readers invested if you kill ALL the good characters?
I'm sure it'll find a way to succeed at that but… I sure am curious how.

It is said that devils are reborn in hell with no memories of past lives. So blood devil is reborn.
Only thing they remember is the sound of chain saw engine or whatever.
And even if blood devil remembers, it will be full devil not embodying power corpse as a "fiend"
And even if blood devil remembers, it will be full devil not embodying power corpse as a "fiend"
The fiends are just the devils wearing a human corpse as a host. The Blood Devil is Power, it just won't have the same human appearance (and memories).
When the Violence fiend explains he is under the influence of his human host "brain" he explains it is something very rare for fiends. Normally fiends are the devil in a human corpse, they are not a new hybrid entity.

Fire Punch, Fujimoto's previous manga, is the story of Agni's journey. There are other characters that come in contact with him, some stay for a long while, some for a shorter period, some go away for a time and come back later, but really Agni is the only character we follow through the entire thing. Chainsaw-man can be similar (although I suspect Makima isn't going anywhere until the end).

Yeah what I meant is that power as we know her right now is dead. Even if she comes back it will be the full devil, completely new design.

Isn't that how Devilman went on?

Well it's not like this is Akame Ga Kill, I got faith in the author. This is also probably going to be a relatively short series.
Fujimoto to Editors: "I'm going to kill off all the other characters and just have Denji be Makima's slave"
Editors: "Uh…"
Fujimoto: "This was actually just a story about how Makima took over the world with Denji as her slave. You never saw it coming, did you? What a twist."
Editors: "Ok, let's start looking for a new job."

"Nante Twisto-desu. Subarashii."
Anyone guessing how many chapters this series has left? I'm gonna go ahead and say it's over in 20.
I don't think is coming to a end, but this is Fujimoto's wild ride after all so who can guess.
I can see this actually being the end of the first stage of the manga (as if everything so far was kind of a prologue). It really depends on what happens next.
As for dead characters, let's not forget human/devil hybrids are immortal. Given that and how strong assets they can be, I doubt Reze and Quanxi are gone. Makima can bound them with a contract and have 2 OP soldiers (sword-guy probably met this fate as well).
Could be a time loop, I'm not sure.
I'm sad.
sometimes this manga just seem to be shocking for shock sake.
but i also wanna keep reading it so i guess it's working?

I feel there is a purpose and substance to all this unlike something like Akame Ga Kill! where it was all pure shock value. Makima is genuinely interesting and the mystery surrounding her was built up properly. She did not randomly murder or rape people for no reason right after she was introduced to make her look despicable.
She did not randomly murder or rape people for no reason right after she was introduced to make her look despicable.
Yeah, she's the opposite of that when you think about it. At the start she seemed like a ruthless but kind officer of the law, but the more we learn about her the creepier she gets. I was half-expecting Denji to litterally turn into a dog and join the drooling pack of her former admirers after last week.
Either way, I'm eager to see what comes next and how much of it is connected to Future (is best !)'s predictions.
Well i guess there will be an arc about Denji killing Power,
I just want to say that this didn't aged well and I find it funny.
Not trying to pinpoint but this manga is off the rails.
You can't get off the rails if you never been on them.
! But rest assured that chapter 82 will explain the motivation for the senseless killing.
! Makima wants to null Denji and Pochita's contract.
I'm afraid to click that spoiler lol
No, no, don't tempt us ! It's one of the few series that are wacky enough to remain unpredictable on a weekly basis, I want to enjoy its madness to the fullest.
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1007510
! Makima is a devil. Makima is lawyering to null a contract. Makima is a devil and a lawyer.
Ultime Evil Detected.
In the first chapter Pochita said " I will give you my heart.. in exchange, show me your dreams"
I wonder if Denji giving up on life constitute a breach in the contract ?
.
Finally I got something right :D
Makima for villain of the decade.
Non, Jump female villain of the century.
Aizen? Madara? Light?
Hahahaha
After all the excitement from last chapter, this one didn't really worked for me :/
I like that Denji is so in the shit he can't even fight back in the slightest, but the whole explanation seemed like too much bs to actually make me interested.
Maybe manga in general got me desensitized with terrible father figures, but getting the hyped-again-and-again-and-again-and-again "secret behind the door" to be "you killed your father" was awfully underwhelming. Particularly when immediately followed with "you had no choice though, since he was trying to kill you". I get why the reveal would shock Denji still, but as a manga reader I really couldn't be bothered.
Underwhelming also that the "it's time to pay for your sins" was followed by this reveal, because that line made me think it would be followed with something related to what the Chainsaw Devil did in the past that put him in everyone and Makima's radar, but instead we went for something that clearly was not the cause behind Makima actions. Unless, of course, his father was the previous Chainsaw-man…

The whole "atone for your sins" is bs excuse Makima is saying to continue to manipulate and own Denji. She doesn't give a shit about that.
It is even more ridiculous when you think of all the atrocities she committed herself, and yet have the audacity to tell him he doesn't deserve to be happy since he killed his father. Fuck off Makima.
What a wonderful Villain <3
That's why I said it was also underwhelming for that reason. Underwhelming in a sense because we were teased so much since the first chapters by what lied behind the door; and underwhelming in the sense that the "pay for your sins" gave a fake hype that it would be followed by some actual reveal behind Makima reasons and instead we get something that clearly isn't that (which I concede can still be if his father was more than just a drunk nobody, but for now I assume that's not the case).
It's a different door, someone on Reddit pointed it out.

Edit: also the father thing is clearly just manipulation by Makima.
It's like the last straw on a camel's back. It was the push she needed to break him.
She probably dont care about justice and that's not the reason at all.
The reason for breaking Denji is probably darker. There's no way she give two shits about his father.
I feel like that is not what is behind the door precisely because that. It sounds like something that would have made sense to tell the readers early and then hit denji with it. But it is such a human thing to affect him that makes sense within the plot.
Like this is what happens if you try to move on, and this is why you don’t deserve to move on.
But she hasn’t said why he can’t move on.
the good ol' door switcheroo, never gets old.
So intense… !
The childhood trauma door, I feel, is possibly real but completely unrelated. Unless we later learn that Makima had ties with Denji's father and this is personal to her, there's no way something so simple is what motivates her. I agree that it's more manipulation instead, to further her goal of breaking Pochita's contract. Why she wants to do that is mostl likely linked to the reason everyone out there and their sister is after Chainsaw's heart.

That's a relief. So the DON'T OPEN THE DOOR door is still locked.
So the fact the door in this chapter looks exactly the same and in a corridor that looks exactly the same but with the knob on the other side might suggest this is a fake. I mean, not that this is another door hiding a different thing, but the entire thing it fabricated by Makima.
@.access:

Yes, Pochita will only open the door to his heart after marriage. Not after mindfucking.
So Makima want's Denji to lose the will to live so he will give-up his contract with Pochita so she can make a contract with Pochita instead.
But I think Makima might be mistaken on why Denji and Pochita even have a contract so her methods aren't going to work.
Now seems like a good time for a timeskip I think.
I see the timeskip scenario going forward, with Denji living as a dog for a while as a possibility.
I also see the posibility of denji being the first shonen protagonist to murder a room full of inocent dogs/getting attacked by a squad of demon dogs, trying to battle Makima, fruitlessly, and managing to escape thanks to Power's blood.
! What!?
! >! I mean wut?
! >! Makima's fiends are the Hierarchy of Angles. Joint that with the "ignorance is a bliss" theme and we are Paradise Lost know boys.
So some theory from JP twitter:
! > “Datenshi” means Fallen angel in Japanese.“Datenshi” can be broken down into two parts: “Daten” + “Tenshi” Now 1.) “Daten” means voiced consonant mark (“) (*Editor’s note: in fact it’s “Dakuten”) 2.) “Tenshi” means angel And in Japanese language, 1.) + 2.) “Tenshi” てんし+ voices consonant mark(“) = “Denji” でんじ
The MC name “Denji” refers to Datenshi = Lucifer.
So our MC was once served under God = Makima. But became/or will become the top of the hell = Lucifer. (Please refer to the concept of Lucifer.)
And the picture above in Makima’s house shows the birth of Lucifer. It means 1.)the most feared Devil will be Denji. 2.) There will be Denji vs Makima
Is what the Japanese Twitter says
!
! What!?
! >! I mean wut?
! >! Makima's fiends are the Hierarchy of Angles. Joint that with the "ignorance is a bliss" theme and we are Paradise Lost know boys.
Where's this coming from?
Where's this coming from?
Korean spoilers on mangahelpers. It's not like they give full summaries like they have in the OP, MHA or BC threads but it's better than nothing.

! Oh no…Oh Yes...oh no again
They changed Prince's name to "Princi"->Principality, Dominion, Power, Angel, Seraphim. Galgali->Galgalim->Ophanim. Virtue is easy, and beam you have to squint to make into beam of divine light I guess. Shin Megami Tensei does group the first few ones into a cohesive package of the angels, and Makima could easily be Throne.
And here I was thinking that Power chose that name because stupid reasons.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Wikipedia says this: (also that Ophanim/Galgali is a Throne, so makima is outside this hierarchy, and Beam is a Cherubim, Cherubeam if you will, we are only missing an Archangel)
Oh damn I remember the Power angel from Shin Megami now.
Ohhhhh. Okay, cool.
