Is there like a Lupin the first or the second?
The First is the one by Maurice Leblanc, the Second is his son and the father of the Third.
Is there like a Lupin the first or the second?
Yes. Lupin the First is unnoffically/officially actually a famous character by an entirely different creator… and while it was public domain in Japan and France, didn't enter the English public domain until around 2000, so that's why there's a lot of early english version Lupin movies where he's called "Wolf" or "Rupan". Like, its canon that he's the descendant of THAT Lupin, but they never asked permission originally so not technically official.
Lupin the II is obviously his father, but he's never really played a role in anything. It's always the 1rst that a big deal is made out of.
Lupin the VIII is a sci-fi future spinoff... thing. That exists. It's early 80's pink jacket era and... exists.
Also, Goemon and Zenigata are descendants of other famous figures. Goemon being a legendary outlaw hero in Japan from the 1500s, and Zenigata is based on a famous Japanese crime-fighting character named Heiji Zenigata. The character was known for throwing coins as a weapon (hence the Zeni in the name)... and famously had a live action japanese tv series that ran for 20 years and nearly 900 episodes.
Ironiclaly, the series has been around SO long now that Goemon really should be the 14th or 15th by now, and Lupin should be at least the 5th, but whatever. Its forever the 70's for them, no matter how technology moves on.
Well is hard to ask permission from a dead person, and I doubt that a 3 year old Monkey Punch knew he would create Lupin III and find a way to ask Maurice just one year prior to his death.

He has an estate.
Who tried to sue them when they started trying to bring it out in English countries.
Same sort of thing as the guys that created Conan and Tarzan and Peter Pan.
Well, my bad I wasn't aware of said estate.

Just watched Goodbye Partner and Fujiko Mine's Lie. Both good, the first is a television special the other a film.
Goodbye Partner feels like the classical caper. On the Fujiko movie I will mark my comment as spoiler as I don't if people saw A Woman Named Fujiko Mine and the movies that spanned out from that.
! I occurs that Jigen's Gravestone, Goemon's Bloodspray and Fujiko's Lie are all connected. All the assassins that target the group are altered humans coming from a Weapon X like facility being run by a secret cabal of billionaires. We don't know who they are so I expect a 4th movie( a Lupin titled one) to finish this.
and the remaining villains go extra over the top switching from androgynous to a full ballgown and umbrella right out of a suit.
Could be worse she could’ve been dressed up as a guy in Elvis Costume.
Elusiveness of the Fog- Lupin timetravelling. Bleh, that's like having Lupin and aliens, its just dumb. Bland villain that started out okay,
The funny thing is that absurd as his reasons for why he acted against Lupin was in this story Mamo was still somewhat better written in this version of this story than he was in the original episode the special was based off of. It
also helped that we actually get to see his time machine work in the remake whereas in the original episode we didn’t. Unfortunately Lupin doesn’t drive a badass looking car that then doesn’t show up in any other scene like he did in the original.
All this talk about Lupin gave me the final push I needed to finally check out Part II.
Five episodes in and so far, so good. Obviously it's a bit dated in terms of the animation, writing, and, uh…humor, but most of it still holds up and the episodic format of the show really plays to Lupin's strengths. While I enjoyed Parts IV and V, the multi-part episodes and overarching storylines may have been a bit more ostentatious than the show needed to be. Also, Part II has the advantage of not being limited to any one location, and thus the show can keep things fresh by taking place just about anywhere. In the first five episodes alone, Lupin has been everywhere from Italy, to Rio, to Scotland, to Switzerland. Actually, with the exotic locales, constant battles with mad scientists, Fujiko's femme fatale nature, Lupin's unique brand of suaveness, and his cockiness towards his enemies, the series is rather James Bond-ish.
One thing though, I know Zenigata is supposed to be a bit of a schmuck, but why does he even bother putting handcuffs on Lupin when he can apparently get out of them at any time? Or does it work on Roger Rabbit rules?
If you're Pops, nothing is going to make you admit defeat when it comes to Lupin.
I'm curious; are you watching the dub or the subbed version of part II.

Zeni's cuffed Lupin and had him not get out plenty of times, even gotten him all the way to prison and kept him there on multiple ocassions.. As pre-prepared as Lupin is, even he has limits to how many backup plans and lock picks he can have at one time. Especially if Zeni gets him after coming out of the water or after already using up his stuff from an earlier escape or whatnot.
Also, the game between them has rules. If Lupin feels like he's been caught fair and square, and not just through dumb luck or outside factors, he'll actually go along with it most of the time. "Hey look, Pops actually caught me!"
But yeah, pretty much Roger Rabbit rules. Whatever leads to the more fun scenario.
(Tom and Jerry rules, really.)
I always had the impression that Zenigata holds back and only wants to bring in Lupin when it's really deserved. I mean, whenever he really wants to, somehow he captures the whole crew in some fool proof way, but that's always only when he has some reason NOT to capture them.
Part II is hit and miss the whole way through. There are some really great, fun episodes and then some WTF ones. You can only watch the first 80 or so episodes dubbed. I've gotten pretty used to just sticking with subs at this point even though I always have liked the Geneon cast dub.
Which reminds me, anyone know how they are going to dub the new CGI movie in English? Established cast or new? I see it's going to be shown at the French animation festival in June but not sure what language it'll be in. I think there's already an Italian dub. I'm hoping COVID-19 doesn't stop the US theater release entirely, it might be the only time I get to subject my husband to Lupin movie.
Zenigata is all about the chase. He's caught Lupin enough, and had him on death's door, and teamed up with him enough, and given him head starts enough, that if the goal was really JUST to catch him he'd have done it.
It works out that as a side effect of their game he ends up catching lots of other big time criminals and bringing in millions in stolen goods, so his excessivness is allowed. And that he's basically allowed to do it worldwide too is a thing.
When he's handled right, its not that Zenigata is truly incompetant… it's that Lupin is just that good.
I'm curious; are you watching the dub or the subbed version of part II.
Dubbed. I've seen Parts IV and V dubbed and I think Tony Oliver and the other VAs do a great job. Naturally, I'll have have to switch to subs after episode 79.

Yeah, that's about what I assumed. I was being kind of flippant anyway. Just a little tick I noticed based on the first five episodes.
Part II is hit and miss the whole way through.
Well, there's 155 episodes, they're not all gonna be winners. Same deal with Doctor Who.
I always felt that the ones where Zenigata is portrayed as a bumbling incompetent nuisance at best sort of missed the point. In my mind pops is the closest thing Lupin has to an equal, and he is scarily competent, just not to the level of his prey. I mean i'm not opposed to him being comic relief, which he does oh so well, but there needs to be a balance betwenn him being a bloodhound to watch out for and him falling on his ass
If Zenigata was just incompetent, he'd be taken off the case. Instead, he's the only one that ever catches Lupin. And he also brings down other super criminals on the side in the process. So… yeah.
It's way better when they're equals.
And when you consider Lupin has a super specialized gang of four and Pops handles all of them with only mooks under him, he's even more impressive.
The CGI Film is gorgeous. A great adventure with everything I can thing a good Lupin caper can have.
! Is always a pleasure to ruin some nazi plans, especially with the uncanny resemblance to the Hitler's photo to a wheelchair bound senior Bolsonaro with a 'stache lol.

Bluray was released 25th of last month. It's o Nyaa, there a portuguese -> english translation and there's another. The pt-en has a larger screen but if fucks the subs, go with the 3.2GB on.
I'm halfway through of watching Lupin, Part 5 on the Adult Swim app. The dub of part 5 is great. Goemon's fight in the finale of the Black Notebook storyline was intense and I had to admit I didn't expect the fight to end the way it did. Anothter reason I think I'm enjoying the dub of Part 5 because I just think of this english cast which is an mixture of the Part 2 and Part 4 dub cast as my prefer Lupin dub cast, since I used to them now days.
I only seen one of the Funimation dub Lupin specials (Crisis in Tokyo), which I thought it was good and the Funimation dub cast was fine, but they don't come close to the dub cast of Parts 2/4/5.
Just watched Steal Napoleon's Dictionary. You guys were right about the art being a bit shit, but it's ok because the story was good. I'm always glad to have Zenigata be competent and effective rather than just showing up to be comic relief.
There is a villain in the story, the corrupt CIA agent chasing Lupin.

In your opinion, would this be a good movie for a person that has never watched any Lupin?

Frankly, yes. It has all the beats to understand the franchise, Lupin wants to steal something, Zenigata chases him but accepts catching a bigger fish for Interpol, Fujiko helps but for her own reasons, Jigen is the gunslinger and Goemon the samurai wanting to cut thing worthy his sword. Yeah, it marvelously animated, has a good plot, an endearing side character and the above beats that are the 101 of the series.

Great! Like I said earlier, I'm hoping to get my husband to see the movie with me and hoping it would be a good starting point to appreciate the series.

Weirdest part of that film is that - i'm sure it made sense at the time joke about how all other nations leave the bill to Japan. But it didn't have much recognition in 2020. Its a bit like when those old Abbott and Costello movies reference like a then current politician and it just wooshes past you

Yeah, I was wondering about that, but there are actually liner notes in the DVD explaining that part!
Just watched fujikos unlucky day/da capo of love/the columbus file. Damn thats a lof of alternative titles for one movie. It's so average its okay, it hinges on fujiko losing her memory of where the magical macguffin is and everyone wying for her while she stumbles around all pure and innocent. Kind of a stock plot but it does go into that whole does Fujiko love Lupin on any genuine level deal, which like Zenigatas competence, varies wildly betwenn films. This one is more in the yeah she kinda does, but it's complicated which is my prefered take on it. Sadly this is also one of those absolute moron Zenigata showings where he just sinks his own boat and can't work his way out of a paper bag which is a shame. They never really knew what to do with him in the "serious" 90's style movies it seems

Something to do with the economic boom i guess?
It doesn't really explain them joking about Japan lending them money. I guess it's as simple as, they did. But this is what the notes say.

Cool, always dig liner notes. AnimeEigo always did cool ones in their titles. And cool to see watching of vintage Lupin specials, I really enjoyed those. The majority of them were pretty cool I found.
Also, from last page, I do recommend Dragon of Doom. Everybody digs different stuff, but it's overall a reasonably received special. Has a 7 on MAL, I gave it a 9 myself. How can you say no to this plot sell:
"A Hong Kong crime boss contracts Lupin, Fujiko and Jigen to recover a legendary dragon statue that sunk with the Titanic. Unfortunately for them, the dragon is a treasure of Goemon's clan, said to have power exceeding that of his Zantetsuken sword". Plus, it's from 1994. Was there a bad anime made in 1994?
On if the CGI Lupin movie has all the usual Lupin tropes, for me there's one must have. Fujiko playing the seduce card on Lupin. Also, them getting prank married, though I think that only happened like twice. I'm not shipping, you're shipping, don't judge me (haven't seen the movie)

The plot is "The badguy is going to make an indestuctable airplane that can't be cut, and then fly it into buildings. And then Goemon cuts it anyway."
It was bad before 9/11, and outright terrible after.
Was there a bad anime made in 1994?
Quite a lot of them. Just most of that stuff didn't make it out of Japan because anime was so niche at the time the states only got the good stuff that was cherry picked for most of the 90's.
Didn't that godawful 90's mega man anime drop in 94?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animated_television_series_of_1994
Also apparently Highlander the animated series and Free Willy the series.
But it was the year of Gargoyles so… Also The Tick and Reboot.
But for anime...
Oh god phantom 2040 hunts my nightmares still.
How could they do that to such a great franchise
The plot is "The badguy is going to make an indestuctable airplane that can't be cut, and then fly it into buildings. And then Goemon cuts it anyway."
I know you don't like it, and that's cool. But plenty of fans do like it, so I was just sharing another view for the fan who asked. It's even getting a blu-ray release in the US in August, I've seen people talking about that. At least we all dig Lupin.
Didn't that godawful 90's mega man anime drop in 94?
That was intended as humor, with just a bit of love for how cool and fun the anime vibe was at that time. That said, I really got a kick out of that Mega Man anime. The characterization and style was pretty true to the games, and really fun. Them coming out of the TV into Japan may not be everybody's bag, but I found it really solid fun. Oddly enough I watched it just a few months ago, since I was on a Mega Man kick, reading comics and manga.
Oh god phantom 2040 hunts my nightmares still.

The same way they could make those Gene Deitch Tom & Jerry episodes, those sub-par Flintstones cartoons that came out in the 70’s, The Scooby and Scrappy Show, Those awful mid 60’s to 1980’s Looney Tunes shorts, The post Ego Trip episodes of Dexter’s Lab, and I know some feelings are going to be hurt saying this
! Space Ghost Coast to Coast & The Brak Show
The plot is "The badguy is going to make an indestuctable airplane that can't be cut, and then fly it into buildings.
Someone on the staff must’ve really liked that episode from part two that ended with Fujiko chasing Lupin with the
Zantetsuken cutting down random buildings in the process.
! Space Ghost Coast to Coast & The Brak Show
Well, those weren't strictly speaking revivals or continuations of the original series. They were essentially spoofs with completely different tones and personalities for the characters.
\Space Ghost Coast to Coast & The Brak Show\
Those weren't pretending to be sequels or remakes by any means. They were goofs. And they were good fun in their own right.
It was what a fledgling cartoon network could do on a budget of 5$ back in the day.
See also Sealab 2021 which had nothing to do with Sealab 2020 despite reusing all the props… to the point they eventually took the exact script from a 2020 episode and played it completely straight with the new voice cast and the results were... weird.
I've been enjoying this big post about the animators for series 2, very cool stuff. Had no idea one of the notable animators on that Lupin series also worked on Galaxy Express 999 movies, Batman TAS, etc.
http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/index.php/lupin-iii-part-2-credits
Watched from russia with love and i am suprised by how much i enjoyed it. I remembered this one to be pretty bad, but it had good characterization, lots of funny moments (the intro where the topless librarian beats up Zenigata and Lupin is nothing if not memorable) and Rasputon aside it wasn't too goofy. I still don't like his schtick of showing fingers in peoples face holes but i can enjoy the rest. But on the downside there is barely any purpose for Zenigata, the villains are fairly stock and the plot is the standard race to get the legendary treasure

I was thinking about that ep where some mafia guy built a flying zantetsuken drone that could only be stopped by its natural enemy yams

Oh so it's kind of like harvey birdman.

Yes, exactly like Harvey Birdman. Except Space Ghost had a lower budget so they had to recycle a bunch of the 60's animation

Which was even better when they got to Cartoon Planet and started breaking the fourth wall over it, making up insane songs, giving lessons on how to speak Italian, and doing things like commenting on Zorak's colors changing in every shot.
(All 22 eps are right here.)

In comparison Space Ghost Coast to Coast was just weird because they'd interview actors and take their interview completely out of context and just sort of… build a show around that.

For the longest time, I had no idea how the interviews on the show were actually done. Once I did learn it, honestly, a lot of the magic of the show was lost.
That Banjo episode still makes me cry, one of the most traumatic moments of my entire childhood.
I watch Castle of Cagliostro for the first time in long time today. It's an really fun movie. Zenigata and Fujiko had one of my favorite moments in the movie during the climax, while Fujiko doing play by play commentary of the fight at the wedding, which leads to Zenigata exposing the Count's plans to the entire world.
Also I watch some more of Lupin, Part V. The episode involved Lupin and the gang trying to get the toilet fixed was a fun episode just for some of the hijinks that was going on.
Cagliostro is such an incredible film in itself, but as a Lupin film it is at times a little off. Non-flirty seductress Fujiko, and 100% hero Lupin spring to mind, but that is minor nitpicking really when the movie is so damn enjoyable
As I've been going through the Red Jacket series, a hero Lupin and non-flirty Fujiko wasn't unprecedented.

Any examples for episodes when Fujiko didn't try to use her charms? My mental showing of Fujikos trajectory during that show is her rubbing up on Lupin pleading to organize a caper, screwing over Lupin and smoothing it over with cooing and doing the same thing to whoever owned the macguffin on that week.
Lupin sort of slides in and out of heroism. But it usually erred on the side of he'll still steal your shit. Or nice but kind of a horndog. He was rarely as pure and chivalrous as Cagliostro Lupin. Atleast thats my take, ya'll may prove me wrong yet
Any examples for episodes when Fujiko didn't try to use her charms?
By my recollection although I could be wrong.
Episodes 19, 22, 25, 34, 42, 48, 50, 51, 52, 66, 69,125, 137, 143, 145, 148, 151, & 152.
There's even at least one episode where she has the temerity to get pissed at Lupin for not trusting her (eventhough she convinces him to answer a challenge that nearly gets him and Jigen killed).
Have only gotten to episode 118 myself (stupid corona restrictions for amazon) so i'll have to take your word for the late entries. But out of those i had seen most times she seems to be either under disguise as someone else or too pre-occupied with risk of own death or death of close friends to flirt. But then again i didn't put any exceptions on it either so fair play.
Episodes tend to run together when you watch a bunch, so I don't know off hand. There was an episode I can remember where Lupin mostly is just trying to help a kid out, and it's the kid that betrays him, and he helps get a bad politician in trouble. And another one where he helps bring some guy and his family pretending to be Superman to justice because they're mad that a big supermarket was taking their business. There's another one where even though they're stealing something, they turn the proceeds into money to give a little girl that Goemon befriends back her eyesight.
I remember some episode towards the end of the season where they were saving Fujiko the whole time and I don't recall her being flirtation or backstabbing in any way.
Oh yeah, there is one where they're stealing something from an ex-girlfriend of Jigen's, and Fujiko offers her help, doesn't flirt at all, takes pity on the woman because she's ill, and just lets Jigen have what was stolen.
