Sanji vs Page One - Episode 925
lol @ Sanji not actually defeating Page One.
Great episode. I like that the anime expended on this fight and that they actually show how Sanji escaped from Page 1, since it was offscreen in the manga.
Loved the animation of the fight and the expansion of it. The last kick was just beautiful too.
Got some neat confirmations on the fight too. Page One was not KO'd, which confirms he's pretty damn strong, and that is a good sign because we need some tough competition on Kaido's side aside from him and his commanders. I'm also glad they didn't taint this episode like the chapter was tainted by you know what. Pretty much all Soba Mask!
lol @ Sanji not actually defeating Page One.
I haven't watched the episode yet and don't know how the anime handled the ending… but I really never understood the headcannon of the community that Sanji had defeated Page One.
It was a possibility, sure, but definitely not something set in stone.
Sanji not defeating Pageone is a good thing. Its consistent with what we know about ancient zoans and their insane durability. It foreshadows Sanji's need for stronger attacks in Onigashima. It doesnt kill off Pageone's character just for Sanji to show off. Though, an issue that arises with Pageone being fine at the end of the episode, is that Sanji said he intended to take him out of the picture. So maybe Toei should have made it more obvious that Sanji wasnt aware that Pageone was still conscious. A classic closeup to the claws and a slight twitch would have been fine. Or instead, since Drake was supposed to arrive at the scene afterwards (assuming Toei planned to show that in the future), leave Pageone unconscious for this episode and reveal that he's alive at that point.
Great episode! No complaints here.
Sanji!!!!
Awesome

Because that’s what he said he was going to do going into the fight. He said they needed to lessen the enemy forces whenever they could. Then he proceeded to whoop the guy’s ass. It cuts away before we see the finishing blow, but since Sanji is fine later, we assume he succeeded.
Yeah, I was pretty surprised to see him flee the battle at the end. If he can’t even beat a headliner with that gear… would’ve made more sense if he was forced to retreat when he saw the backup arriving. Oh well.
Other than that, this was a really great episode! Enjoyed it a ton—especially the second half, once Komurasaki started her song and we saw what was going on with Robin, worst spy ever.
Here’s hoping they verified with Oda that Page One is fine. Would now be weird if he failed to show up again this arc.

True, at the same time though, it did make sense for him to want to leave the fight, noting that if they continued struggling, they'd likely decimate the entire capital.
This was great! That final kick was the weak point because it shows page1 just fine after it, I would rather if they go the manga way and not show page1 after that kick. But still great, still feels a bit different from the vinsmokes transformation.
Isn't he also using DJ in that last kick?
Animation was awesome. Fact that he did not beat Page 1 was lame imo.
In manga he is suggested to land an attack on Page 1 - same type of attack that KOed wounded Luffy during Whole Cake Island arc. I am dissapointed with anime outcome.

Plus there was no reason for Oda not to spare a panel to show his defeat if it was true.
I really loved this episode, it felt like it enhanced the manga chapter considerably. The anime was now reinforced the durability of ancient zoans and their strength.
The music towards the end of the episode was amazing.
I know it doesn't make sense in terms of power scale, but a Sanji vs. King fight would be epic dual in the skies.
I know it doesn't make sense in terms of power scale, but a Sanji vs. King fight would be epic dual in the skies.
Yes it would but he will be Zoro's
Sanji will get Queen instead
Both make no sense so far per power scale but we know it will happen
Really fantastic episode overall.
Absolutely gorgeous animation all throughout. Naotoshi Shida's work, despite being formulaic, is nevertheless very satisfying and appealing to watch, especially for henshin scenes.
Tetsuro Nireki's has proven to be a force to be reckoned with since he animated Kaido's blast breath and his work here is no different. Some of his cuts really reminded me of Ryo Onishi.
There were many non regular animators, Takahiro Watabe from FGO, webgen animator Mitchell Gonzales whose use of smears was gorgeous, webgen animator Ron Deseo, AoT's Meng Sun who also initially animated the raid suit sequence in the opening and finally bloody Shuu Sugita, all did an absoluely tremendous job.
Katsumi Ishizuka was just flabbergastingly amazing. He came again proving loud and clearly why he is the greatest action animator on One Piece. he's really embracing them Kameda brush strokes now and I absolutely love it.
While also supervising the episode, Kenji Yokoyama did a very impressive job. This man is in his 70's, he has been the most consistent supervisor who has continously been working on the show since episode 3 and he's still managing to outdo himself. Crossword my man, you're don't give this awesome animation supervisor enough credit.
This episode was also young female assistant episode director Nanami Michibata's debut as an episode director. The direction wasn't perfect (well because it's her first time ever directing an episode duh), but it was very competent for a first time because directing one of the most anticipated episodes of this 2nd act of Wano was for sure a very difficult task and kudos to her for putting together such a tremendous episode.
Don't hesitate to check each individual animator's work here:

Maybe because the anime knew that Page One wasn't defeated and Oda gave them this info beforehand.
! The anime staff also knew about Kyoshiro being Denjiro.
At least we have confirmation that Germa 66 invented A.T. Fields
You know what's strange Law calls the suit is from the comic and that he is recognizing it but in the than it shows it to be yellow… LOL
I'm sorry to be the boring guy here, but the episode was disappointing to me. First of all, just to be open with you guys about my relationship with the anime, I gave up on the anime a long time ago, and since then I have only watched a few standout scenes, usually on youtube, so this episode was the first one that I've watched in its entirety in a looooong long time.
I know that the anime has been raising its game since WCI and especially since Wano, and I'm happy for that. IMO, the current art style is pretty cool (I enjoy the thick lines) and the animation is usually awesome.
This is episode is no different in this regard. All my compliments to the animation team! Eye candy visuals in many parts.
But the directing was not immersive at all to me, like the feeling was just out of synchrony. The delivery of the dialogues were dull to me, especially in the comedic moments where the timing was kind awkward and poorly executed. Most of Sanji's "character moments" throughout the episode didn't hit the right notes to me, as if the director didn't really get it. Also, the soundtracks didn't support the scenes very well (in my opinion), even though they did something cute at the end using the shamisen song that Komurasaki was playing to end the fight.
And it's not like I hate the anime or anything, because I actually enjoy the anime from the early days of One Piece. That's why it is so weird that a well animated episode with a decent pace failed to win my heart.

Again, this week's episode director just got started directing for the first time and she is completely new to the role of episode director. Very few people are capable of pulling off flawless direction from their first time, especially an episode of this caliber.
One Piece Episode 926 Preview
I see the Oniwabanshu went to the Naruto school of insconpicous ninja get-ups.
After rewatching the episode a couple of times, here are my final thoughts:
The direction and storyboard, especially for the action, were great. The added visual details, like the A.T field-like barrier or the japanese painting style they chose for Sanji's bathhouse joke or the "to be continued"…they were all great. The animation was superb. Kenji Yokohama went above and beyond my expectations. I never thought i would see such a good character animation from him like when Sanji did his little Soba Mask act. Considering his age, he's a beast. Regarding the highlights of the epiosde, i must say i was left speechless at times. Shuu Sugita's scene made my jaw drop. The choreography, the effects, the art...it was great on all fronts. Gonzalez's scene was just as detailed. As was Meng Sun's terrific debris and smoke effects. The anime has been steadly transitioning into the realm of modern anime and we can see that with the frequent participation of webgen animators.
As far as adaptation goes, there are good parts and questionable parts.
The good parts:
-The scene with Luffy in Udon and the setup of Kidd escaping the prison.
-Showing the final kick against Pageone.
The questionable parts:
-Franky apparently being aware of the Germa raid suit.
-The final scene with Pageone. I like the fact that Pageone was fine, it makes scene, but i dont like the way it was portrayed as well as the fact that they made Sanji escape even though he was aware that Pageone was still conscious. It makes a bit of sense because, like others said, Sanji was careful not to destroy the capital but at the same time it contradicts what he said before the fight when he declared he would defeat Pageone.
Overall, i was very satisfied with the episode and i'm hyped for the upcoming fights. If Toei is giving relatively minor fights like this so much attention, i can only imagine how good the final fights are gonna be. You got my attention Toei, good job
The only problem I have is how unfazed Page One was after the kick. I definitely think that wasn't Oda's intention, but the episode was so enjoyable otherwise that I don't really mind. It's always the year of Sanji!!
Also, some manga spoilers coming up:
! This episode was a good demonstration of the work Oda has done with Hiyori. She has to put on the mask when playing that song to hide either unbridled rage, sadness and tears, or both. Watching the anime along with reading the manga is a phenomenal way to enjoy this arc, it seems.

Sure, but I'm not talking about the episode not being "flawless". My complaints are much broader and my point is essentially that her emotional vision for the episode was off to me, so I had a big disconect while watching most of the scenes even though the animation was good. The gags especially didn't land properly (and I had enjoyed them reading the manga).

It's true that some of the comedic bits in this episode didn't land properly, obviously do to the ED's lack of experience and believe me, comedic timing (or comedy in general) is one of the most challenging things to pull off successfully as a director. Even some of the more experienced ones fail to do so sometimes. But for example I liked the part where the music started to melt when Sanji talked about sneaking in the Women's bath and then also talking about how he'll save his friends at the same time. So not all comedy has been ruined in this episode.
Still, page1 completely unaffected from all those crazy attacks of soba mask makes page1 look like kaidou, and raid suit kinda pointless.

Well a bit strange but who cares… It was fantastic and Sanji hasn't used his own movement speed it further abilities.
Can't wait for the redesign

I was thinking "wow, that's some Kaido x Luffy level of tanking". That was good in the sense the non-Calamities Beast Pirates are in dire need of some hype right now, but at the same time I don't know how much of this we can take seriously. I assume something like Sanji leaving before the fight actually went anywhere is something they had to be clued on by Oda, but the details of the fight I guess would be up to them.
Honestly, this Page One tankness reminded me of Water 7 when the CP9 were pretty much invincible. Even Blueno was kicking everybody's ass. And then we were at Enies Lobby and suddenly the Strawhats were kicking a lot harder.
Can be, but to be fair it wouldn't be weird if he was as strong as he looked here. He is ranked the same as Drake, after all, possibly Apoo too, and above Hawkins (although that probably has less to do with Hawkins' strength than he being a very recent addition).
Either way, for those of us who didn't even thought of the possibility he was not defeated by that attack, seeing he actually coming up unscathed was a shock. If this is really what Oda had in mind, I wonder why he didn't showed it… it wouldn't require more than half a page and it would have done wonders for the BP depiction.

Great point, I was constantly wondering prior why Oda didn't show the panel like the anime did.
Because he didn't show the panel and also because later on
! Drake is looking for Soba Mask, therefore we know that Drake spoke to Page One, but Drake and not the both of them are looking for Soba Mask, leading us to assume that Page One is incapacitated.
Or maybe I'm taking this too seriously and Oda really just wanted to draw his Sentai Power Ranger main character doing cool things for the sake of doing cool things.

He might be strong, sure, but this kind of depiction can't really be expected in Onigashima or later in the arc.
The thing is… there is no time in the story for every number or flying six to have this kind of over the top resistance. Will every minor fight take multiple chapters in order to take them down? Obviously not. They'll just be defeated in the ordinary time, and many of them will be down by an OHKO for the despair of the fandom, not to mention that some villains will just be offpaneled or forgotten.
That's why I think Oda will pull off a CP9 treatment here.

! I mean, Hawkins got beaten pretty much off panel as well.
I'm sure it was okay because it was an homage to a Japanese painting I'm sure, but Sanji's mental musings had the most nudity One Piece has ever had. lol
I don't agree with the liberties being taken here, at all. Be it in one direction or the other.
But apart from that the episode was just crazy good eye- and earcandy.
At least some justice for Sanji, especially when we remember how little effort went into his clash with Vergo
!
Anyway, favorite part was the gesture Osoba Mask made after the transformation (where he acts like he's eating with chopsticks). Someone should make a gif out of that.
"Overtaken" deflating during the bath fantasy was the best joke in the episode. I was honestly surprised when the following shot of Sanji declaring that he'll protect all his friends showed all the guys in there too, even if they were really tiny and in the background compared to the four girls (the subtitles just happening to cover up Zoro only added to the joke).
Though I still don't like how the Raid Suit was handled narratively overall the episode was certainly a showcase of Oda's jangling of the sentai keys paying off. Lots of cool eye candy in a fairly stacked episode. Shida returning to do his thing and round off the Germa transformation sequences, Ishizuka adding yet another spectacular entry to his lengthy portfolio of cool Sanji scenes, Yokoyama surprisingly turning out some of the most fun and fluid sequences he's done on the whole show (Sanji posing; lots of great, subtle animation touches there) outside of Sanji vs. Mr. 2, and then my personal favorite was that fantastically-choreographed bit after Robin's scene ends that was by Shu Sugita and Mitchell Gonzales. Both of them, plus Takahiro Watabe, are names that I would never expect to show up working on One Piece, but the anime's living in strange and exciting times these days. I don't know if Skippy mentioned it in his video since I haven't watched it yet, but the episode was also storyboarded by a veteran director from PA Works so this episode had people from all over. Looks like next episode might have some fun animation too, though obviously much more restrained than this week's.
As for the ending, yeah I agree it's weird. Showing the final blow in full instead of relegating it to a background afterthought like the manga did is obviously a good thing and what I always expected the anime to do, but even if Oda intends to bring Page One back for the Onigashima battle and the anime team knows this showing him appearing to be completely unfazed by the attack is a weird choice. If they had to show him still awake, just keep Page One stuck in the rubble conscious but obviously suffering from the effects of the attack. I think that would've been a good middle ground that wouldn't've taken the wind out of the Raid Suit's sails.
Yeah. The ending struck me as, “wow. So the Raid Suit is flashy but really weak, huh? Sanji didn’t get much of an upgrade after all. Or at least he’s still leagues below Zoro.”

Thats a pretty odd conclusion to reach after he spent the episode hitting Page One around like a toy.
Perahps it would make more sense to view that Page One is actually quite tough.
Perhaps also, your initial perception of Page One, as someone who isn't particularly strong, also effected how you viewed Sanji's performance this episode?

He kicked him around without causing an iota of damage. I assume page one is at supernova strength. Sanji couldn’t inflict any damage whatsoever to a supernova even though his attacks landed for a half hour. That’s not good. Landing a kick doesn’t mean anything if the villain receives no damage.

That just means he needs to find a way to increase his DC. In all other areas, he was dominating Pageone. He has a goddamn AT field shield now
I guess the last hope is for the live action netflix to do sanji justice.:ninja:
Sanji couldn’t inflict any damage whatsoever to a supernova even though his attacks landed for a half hour.
When he was landing the invisible kicks, he spat out drops of blood, therefore he did. Granted the blood drops were very subtle but regardless.
Honestly you guys are acting like Sanji was absolutely outmached even though he was superior in strength, combat ability and was dominating Page One 95% of the time. And I'm very confident into believing that Sanji didn't even go all out. Not to mention that he doesn't even fully master his raid suit.
The braindead obsession with power-scaling that has infected the community lately continues to make me facepalm.

Eh, Sanji has fought sturdy opponents that weren't damaged by his kicks before(like Jabra for example, who recieved no real damage prior to Diable Janbe).
The episode even went out of its way to highlight that Sanji in the raid suit was stronger than Page One, literally adding a line that basically said "ancient zoans are really powerful, but thats not enough to beat stealth black."
I think that clears anything up about who would have come out on top of that situation. Especially considering Sanji was also not injured during the confrontation(as well as the fact they added stuff like him completely speed blitzing Page One the entire fight, as well as using his cape to totally nullify attacks against him).

I'm not sure when we became Dragonball fans, but I don't like it.

Yeah, yeah. Generally I don’t care about it either. I still don’t, honestly. But the changes made to the end of the the fight change a good bit of what Oda intended, so it’s worth discussing, even if it trends power-scaly.

TBH, we don't really know what Oda intended…
We don't know exactly how the fight resolved...
