Okay maybe I should not have have said that but the person I responded to certainly sounded like that. Expecting the crew to have 1 on 1 fights right now totally is unrealistic. It doesn't matter that they are the "main cast" or the "main characters". Their are too many other important characters right now and Oda can't ignore them no matter how much people would like him too.

I disagree that its unrealistic. I believe that they all can have 1 on 1 fights. Idk if i even want that, idk if i think it will happen, I don't have expectations for one piece but i understand that others do and I don't blame them for doing so.

Wano and taking down Kaido and his crew have been set-up since Punk Hazard, that means in…. 2012-2013. Yep... 7 years ago. The battle of Wano will the culmination of everything that happened since then. I don't expect nor specially want extended duel for each SH but I don't think expecting spotlight and important role for them is unreasonable. They aren't Luffy, sure but they're still the protagonists. When you open a new volume, it's them you see first in the intro boxes. Colorspreads feature the crew 95% of the time.
It's not like Oda has to give several chapters long duel to everyone, I don't think would fit chaotic nature of the war anyway. I believe group fights with important roles for them would be a good way to do it. -
Maybe you should try finding more in the story besides "strawhats" and "1 on 1 fights". Their is much more to appreciate than that.
I don’t only look forward to the fights, I love the story, I love the characters and more than anything the mysteries we still don’t know about, like the void century, will of D, joy boy and his story etc. is what really keeps me coming back for more
But yes I also look forward to fights which have been extremely scarce
But it’s not like I want only fights and that’s it, we don’t need another Bleach
But I personally don’t like when people try to criticize others for wanting fights and think there brainless adrenaline junkies who have zero interest in the other parts of the story as well
The fights aren’t what keeps me coming back and rereading but I do enjoy them
-
I believe group fights is the most likely case scenario here. Also, that would be pretty cool. Especially if the groups were made up of people from different crews. Example: Brook, jean bart, heat, a member of the scabbards maybe some of the remaining whitebeard pirates if they show up. Would be interesting seeing how they'd fight with eachother.
-
I can see you will just complain when you don't get what you expect or want no matter how wrong of you it was to expect or want that in the first place.
Keep being snarky though.
Well you deserved a lot worse after suggesting I "find something else". It's a dumb remark and you should be ashamed for even thinking about saying it, let alone clicking "post" after typing that shit out.
-
While I don't expect one on one fights for everyone, I would love to see the Strawhats work together to defeat Kaido, similarly to the way they defeated Oars on Thriller Bark.
-
Robin doesnt like Docking still.
It'll be the Supernovas only, so itll have Zoro(sorry Sanji), Kidd and Law are going to use their abilities to stick them all together into one single bizarre supernova that cuts with trumphets while sending straw ghost into magnetic fields with rubber dinosaurs.
Kaido is done for.

Hey greg just read your latest column. REALLY like the point you made about the rest of one piece being less interesting if luffy beats kaido 1 on 1, because that would make him the strongest creature. I'm sure Oda has thought about that, and it nearly confirms the fact that Luffy wont be taking kaido down on his own for me. Then again, its one piece and anything can happen.

Ive always figured Kaido would be the culmination multiple Supernova taking him down. Kid/Killer wants to, Law wants to, Drake has wanted to since he arrived in the NW (though, he could have been trying to infiltrate his group seeing as he's sword). Apoo likely has a plan for why he's there too. Will Luffy mostly get a 1v1 with Kaido? Sure why not, but not before the others dp something signficant as well. So i agree 100% with Greg.
If there is a Vegapunk arc and it involves CP-0/Kuma/SSG/Whatever, they arent Kaido, it wont feel like they are a threat (mpst likely, unless CP-0's leader is some pseudo Yonko or the SSG really are the ultimate weapons)
If BM lasts into Elbaf, then I can see Luffy having his first 1v1, and it may not even involve knocking her out if she becomes good again. If its Loki, he's not a Yonko right? So the stakes are lowered.
Now even if Luffy defeats Kaido 1v1, it doesnt mean others cant outsmart him. I can see Akainu, Shanks or others still take luffy for a ride if they outsmart him.
All in all im just excited to see how Oda deals with this. 4-5 years ago I would have denied the possibility of Luffy taking out Kaido right now, just didnt seem like the time, but here we are.
-
well I don't know if shanks and luffy are actually going to fight… personally I hope they don't. I agree though, very excited for the future of one piece as I always have been. I've never been unsatisfied with how oda has handled things, so i'm sure i'll be happy with whatever the outcome is.
-
Several smaller arc villains arent much of a threat oftenly. Bellamy and Foxy for instance, and arguably Hodi Jones and CC.
Luffy's coming out of Wano as the only one to replace Kaido, so there wouldnt be many people getting on his way, but there's always some cocky jackass around
-
I feel like we're past the point of having smaller villains like that. To me, it seems like we're gonna be heading straight towards the end with very few pit stops. I can see the crew possibly dealing with Loki or weevil but other than that I find it unlikely we're gonna be getting a smallish villain.
-

Who knows. I only specify because beating Shanks is one of Luffys goals.
Tbh i hope Kid and Luffy only take on Kaido. Ive been rooting for Kid to be Luffy's endgame rival for years now. This would take the cake and help tie up the concept of the supernovas nicely if they had some major fight on Lodestar or something. Zoro vs. Killer too

Is it? I know one of luffy's goals is to have a stronger crew than the red haired pirates but i've never seen that as him saying he's going to beat shanks. Personally, I think their relationship suggests they won't fight. Roger entrusted shanks with the strawhat, which can be seen as him passing his will. Shanks then gives it to Luffy, again passing the will. Based on other things shanks has said like "I gave up my arm for the sake of the new era" and "I met a boy saying the same things as roger" It really seems like shanks IS entrusting luffy with roger's will. What would be the point of shanks fighting him. Why try to stop what you've set in motion. Also, based on the way Luffy reacts to hearing Shanks' name, example back in sabaody when rayleigh talks about him, he seems to think of shanks fondly. So even if he wants to surpass him I don't think that means Luffy wants to beat him directly. I might be over analyzing these things, wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, but shanks and his relationship with luffy is one of my favourite things in the series. I just can't see them fighting in a literal sense. Perhaps Luffy will "beat him" by becoming the pirate king, and then he'll return the hat to shanks. Even if he has to give it to his grave to do so… but thats a "theory" I have. A theory that borders on fanfiction
-
Sorry dude. I shouldn't have said that.
No probs dude, it’s all cool
I do love about the series that it still has so many interesting mysteries after being around so long, where as other series are all about the fights Oda keeps me coming back for the bigger things
I also love how the crew feels like a family, I can’t say I’ve ever read a series that does such a good job making the main cast seem like people who you’d want to be friends with
-
Oda is VERY good at writing character relations imo. At least, hes good at writing ones I enjoy. Even in the wacky world of one piece, the relations feel very real and very human. Its something a lot of people wouldn't expect from whats, on the surface, a shonen battle manga. The way he connects his characters is definitely one of my favourite things in the series.
-
Weevil is one hell of a cocky jackass for example.
But I'm also expecting the SSG to be some kind of super android. That would work too. -

Luffy has explicitly stated he wants to beat all 4 Yonko in Punk Hazard to Law, WCI to BM and Wano to Caribou/Kid. Hes specifically mentioned wanting to beat Shanks in PH to Law and Wano to Kid. This is pure dialogue that he has declared.
I can provide links/chapters if you like.
-
No, I do recall the scene but i feel its a little more complicated than he just wants to beat him in a fight.
EDIT: actually, the scene in wano where he tells kid that hes going to beat shanks. Please share that one
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
i've gone through scenes in wano where kid and luffy interact, and all I could find was them arguing over who would take kaido down. Then with big mom in WCI all i could find was luffy saying he'd beat kaido and big mom.

He specifically says he wants to take down all 4 Yonko, and prefers Shanks wasnt first. This was to Law on Punk Hazard.
And sorry, he argues with Kid about who's going to beat Kaido, not Shanks. Mixed it up because right before, Kid mentions he lost his arm battling the Red Hair pirates.
BUT, Luffy DOES mention, once again, that he will beat all 4 Yonko to Hyogoro. That was the middle of Chapter 940. And this is "physically" beat, because Luffy talks about training, getting stronger and learning this advanced Haki
-
I thought Luffy told that to himself, since Hyogoro doesnt know what the fuck a Yonko is.
-
Hm. My opinion has changed after rethinking this. I do believe they'll end up fighting, but in a non hostile way like it would be against big mom and kaido. Its probably just gonna be the way that luffy shows shanks hes surpassed him. Then returning the strawhat and finishing his journey without it, like roger did. Basically, its more of a friendly thing. I do admit i wasn't correct to believe they wouldn't fight.
-

Luffy literally explains the concept of the Yonko to him and what he's trying to do. Reread the chapter.
-
Naw, you guys just have to keep in mind that by the end of Wano, Luffy and Shanks relationship will be the GREATEST threat to The Marines and Teach in the NW.
So to prevent this dominance, both Akainu and Teach have to move, or even Oda has already thought of this, which means, Shanks is soon to follow up the fate of his missing arm. -

I dont want to sound cynical, but part of me thinks Luffy's and Shank's ideologies will totally clash. There is a huge sense of mysterious aura around Shanks. This is the same man who, while gaining the respect of Sengoku is totally understandable as an enemy, also can just visit the Gorosei and discuss matters with them. These are the same people who commit purges and are the antithesis of what we call "good" in the OP universe (Im sure there is some great reason for why they do it, be it morally grey or just plain bad).
Not only that, but recently in Oden's flashback, Shank's asks Roger a few questions that we, the reader, weren't allowed to know. Roger answers, and then Shanks cries. To me this is likely, heavily related to his past and motivations. On top of this, Shanks, once finding out that Luffy got a huge bounty increase after WCI, quite literally gives a pretty evil looking smile and comments about meeting him soon finally.
Not saying Shanks is evil at all, but I DO think Oda is going to throw a huge curveball to his character, and Luffy/Shanks will clash on that fact. Thus i still think Shanks is not bad or evil, but he still will be an antagonist for sure. If Mihawk actually joins the Red Hair pirates considering they are his only allies essentially (Zoro will have to face Mihawk somehow right?), then it makes all a little more sense there too. Funny enough, this is why i dont see any other group being the final roadblock, because Zoro has to surpass Mihawk last. Shiliew definitely isnt on the same level, we all know that. I can see Usopp actually fighting his father, knowing that while he massively looked up to him, he probably hates him for abandoning him and his mother. Shit will be personal.
Really, and this is out there I'm sure, but if you ask me, I think Shanks is the full circle character. The manga started with him, the manga may end with him. He could be Luffy's final wall, the person he's supposed to surpass. Who would be the most emotional character Luffy overcomes in the end? Probably Shanks. Blackbeard doesnt hold a candle to that IMO. Or Akainu. Or Im, who we barely know anything about. Imagine the battle ending with Luffy finally returning the hat. I really dont know how that could be topped after. Thats essentially the biggest thing the manga could achieve: delivering the hat back emotionally.
And yes, I vehemently disagree with the idea that Shanks will die by BBs hand or something to that effect, seems way too easy and way too like many other mangas.
Edit: Hell, the "final" battle in this manga might actually be a 3-Way battle between the Strawhat Pirates, Blackbeard Pirates and the Red Hair Pirates. All 3 could have extremely clashing ideologies. We already know BB/Luffy do. On top of this, all 3 have small, powerful crews, about main 10 people. Here i can maaaaybe see Shanks getting killed, but idk.
-
There's really no reason, nor indications for Shanks to get in Luffy's way.
If anything, it seems like Shanks wants Luffy to reach Laugh Tale.
-

Literally gave you possible indications but ok…..
We have no idea what Shanks really wants. If he wants Luffy to lets say, save the world by some method that Luffy disagrees with, then thats conflict right there.
We dont KNOW Shanks's motivations yet. You think Luffy could casually talk to the Gorosei, even with his Grandfather in the marines? These evil people make an exception for Shanks for an unspecified reason.
-
I also love how the crew feels like a family, I can’t say I’ve ever read a series that does such a good job making the main cast seem like people who you’d want to be friends with
Fairy Tail is one such shonen with the theme of nakamaship and family. The Strawhat crew's bond is nothing new to the genre.

I'm pretty sure Black Beard is gonna kill Shanks so I doubt we will get a good fight between Shanks and Luffy

I didn't say the idea of being friends or even a family was something new to the genre I said I've never seen it so we'll done before
The straw hats relationship and friendship and how they interact with each other is so much better than Fairy Tail it's not even in the same ball park, hell it's not even the same sport

Sengoku isn't exactly evil and he stopped a war cause Shanks told him to.
Just like Crocus and Rayleigh, Shanks should be aware that Roger is waiting for someone, I really don't see any reason why Shanks would stop the person Roger had been waiting for. -
Luffy told Shanks that he'd get a crew that even surpasses his. In the Yonko bounty chapter, they went out of their way to hype Shanks's crew instead of just him like Kaido and Big Mom.
So I'd expect that confrontation to be crew vs crew more than separate 1v1s.

Where's the fun in that. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@Monkey:
While I don't expect one on one fights for everyone, I would love to see the Strawhats work together to defeat Kaido, similarly to the way they defeated Oars on Thriller Bark.
I feel like Chopper, for example, has been a missed opportunity so far in this arc. His personal stakes could be a lot higher based on unethical experimenting we have witnessed.
Not only that, this is THE zoan arc of the manga and Chopper understands the ability well enough to have made a performance enhancing drug for himself. Now imagine if Chopper ended up in a situation where he had to use Monster Point in a fight, and someone from Kaido's side saw him eating a rumble ball before that. Suddenly Chopper becomes a wanted person by Kaido and potentially ends up hurt and/or captured. Which in turn impacts the rest of the SH and adds to emotional investment each of them has over this business.
When you mostly leave the fighting focus to Luffy, Zoro and Sanji, you limit the way in which the story could branch out with other crew members.
-
We still haven't seen any exemples after the timeskip of what new discoveries did Chopper make while studying, what new recepies did Sanji learned to boost the crew's power, what did Robin even do the past 3 years… so I'm hoping more on that to have some small spotlight soon.
-

Definitely the biggest criticism i have of the series. I hope it can go down after this and get more personal with the strawhats. We've been on a nonstop Kaido/alliance ride for 8 years now. What would help is if this war did show more. Chopper is on the top of my list for most disappointing character right now lol

I don’t know if you already answer this question but how do you think permanent black blade are forged?
By cutting fire ;)
-
Oh. That's a good one. I've actually thought about it a bit and I think a "black blade" happens when the wielder's "armament" becomes stronger than the blade. It overwhelms the blade basically. The better the blade the harder it is to turn it black.
Maybe only some blades can turn black though and it slowly happens after cladding it in "armament" again and again.

Sorry for shitposting all over your thread Greg. I promise I'll stop once I can start my own thread. :ninja:
-
I think there are so many different ways this could go, but for now I really can't see shanks being a serious antagonist. Someone who actually opposes luffy because, again, shanks sees roger in him. Regardless of what roger told shanks that caused him to cry, shanks still looks up to roger and roger is an important figure to him. I wouldn't understand the way he talked to rayleigh about luffy if he wasn't fond of roger. Its complicated, and hard to have a fleshed out understanding of because Shanks really hasn't been in the story too much. I'm not saying your thoughts are completely impossible, I try not to rule anything out, but I just cant see oda going down that route.
-
Yeah. Shanks being an antagonist is just wrong no matter how much people spin it.
-
I'm still of the belief that CoC is somewhat involved in turning your weapon black.
CoA is so widely used lately, we should've seen more permanent black stuff over time, its weird. Also, since Doula Mongo and Teach teased it, Imma say, the next great saga(and last) will be called The Throne War Saga, fits perfectly both for the Pirate King position and the empty throne at Mariejois and the mysterious current ruler.
-
Shanks and Luffy should compete for treasure, or go on a treasure hunting game.
-
I think it's more a matter of how much time you spend feeding the weapon with CoA. Most people will only "harden" their weapons on a few occasions, with the weapons being only part of their arsenal. Only swordsmen rely on their weapon 100% of the time (hence the intimate connection between them and their swords), so we only get to see black blades in their hands.
-
CoC being involved in turning a blade black makes no sense. The reason we haven't seen that many black blades is because it is that rare. Very few blades and very few characters can actually do it.
It's like "devil fruit" awakenings. Very rare.
