In manga, you sometimes see people explaining "My name is written with the characters for flower and star" (or whatever). I assume that happens in real life, too.

Yeah, names basically always mean something. Be it "second son" or "cherry blossom" or "sky", they mean something. Just how the language works.
Doesn't mean they're literally being called those things, but its how it works.
But so do English names, we just usually don't look those up and have it pointed out. i mean, take the name Robert. It comes from the Germanic name Hrodebert meaning "bright fame", derived from the Germanic elements hrod "fame" and beraht "bright". But I'm never going to say to anyone "Yeah, my name is Robby. It means bright fame." Or, if I was more religiously inclined, I could say it means "God is my judge" in Hebrew. It's there, it has that meaning, but its also just a name.
I was more thinking It's unlikely your mother or father looked it up to know it meant bright flame before giving it and they don't even have that meaning in English whereas sky or smile or cherry blossom are common and relevant words the Japanese still use in their everyday life.
But I guess it makes sense if most Kanji's have a meanings and you write your name in Kanjis. Thank you for everyone response. It's something I was curious since starting reading mangas.

Jracule Mohawk is the new Laugh Tale

Except one is just an anime mistake
Lol it was just a joke about the whole drama about Laugh Tale

Greg, not an OP question but have you read any of the new series put out by Shueisha?
Like SpyXFamily
-
King is a Karura in Japanese, Garuda in Hindi.
Sanji vs King confirmed
-
-
Nah
It’s Zoro vs King and Sanji vs Queen
-
Since we're brainstorming
Zoro, Kid and Luffy vs Kaido
Sanji, Drake and Killer vs King
Franky, Raizo and Hawkins vs Queen
Minks vs Jack
Numbers, Flying Six, Oniwabanshu and Mimawarigumi vs leftover Strawhats and Scabbards
I honestly have no idea how BM and her crew fit into this. I'm too skeptical of their motives. Maybe Oda put them here to balance out an other allies assisting the Strawhat/Mink/Samurai Alliance. Then there's a chance that BM betrays Kaido halfway through it.
-
how come big mom pirates balance that out
kaido army alone are 30k VS only 4200 from the alliance?
-
Didn't Luffy knockout like 50K fishmen a bunch of arcs ago? We have 2 CoC users so far. Most of that 30K is to illustrate the numbers of a Yonko's organization. I know Oda is making the numbers crucial, but cmon. Would there be a difference if the Alliance had 25K more allies? Less than 10% of that 30K can survive Luffy and Kid's CoC.
If it was just the Alliance and the Supernova vs Kaido, it would be balanced. The possibility of Jinbei, Neko, and whoever their plus ones might be makes it unfair. In the speculative case from post 6223, BM would balance it out.
-
Luffy and his CoC are definitely stronger than they were during the fishman island arc. Even if the average strength of the jobbers in kaidos crew is higher than the average strength of the jobbers in Hody's crew I believe luffy can take out more than 50k of them. Your haki gets stronger when you clash with other strong haki users, so looking at who luffy has clashed with post fishman island… doffy, katakuri, briefly big mom, i think its fair to say that the growth of his haki has been pretty exponential.
-
Nah
It’s Zoro vs King and Sanji vs Queen
King and queen belong to kid and law. Sanji has his family in law, zoro has orochi.
-
@uniaka:
King and queen belong to kid and law. Sanji has his family in law, zoro has orochi.
Lol I hope not, Orochi is pretty obviously the spandam villain, not in Zoro’s league
And who are you saying Sanji will fight? I assume you mean the big mom pirates but I’m not sure who exactly your implying he’ll fight, there’s a whole lot of them there
Well it’s definitely possible law and kid could fight king and Queen I’ll have my money Sanji and Zoro facing them still
I still think Law and Kidd will assist Luffy against Kaido
-
i see, looks like luffy crew are kinda overpowered by them self
-
The only reason I could see Kid vs king and law vs Queen or vice versa is because it’s a shonen series and opponents need to get stronger as the story progresses and if Zoro and Sanji are already fighting over billion bounty enemies and top 3 Yonko commanders there’s not much more upward momentum left after that
-
@uniaka:
King and queen belong to kid and law. Sanji has his family in law, zoro has orochi.
Lol still on that nonsense?

He îs spandam, but spandam with a mythical that îs same class as sengoku, kaidou, marco fruits. Zoro also has kyoshiro as unfinished duel for proper sword battle, while orochi can be hard to cut depending what special powers he has. Like you cut one head and Two grow instead.

I just don't see him as much of a threat, but I guess it's possible
-
Only way I see Orochi as a legitimate battle threat is if his devil fruit gets awakened like those ID jailers.
Will hate it if it turns out he was playing a weakling all along because it would be a cheap trick, designed only to fool the reader.

Last time we had matchups, in Enies Lobby, Oda threw us some curveballs, lika having Luffy fight Blueno first and changing the pairs between the fights (Sanji vs Kalifa then Jabra). Also in Fishman Island it was very hard to tell who would face who untill the final blows. The little muncher fishman seemed to go to Chopper, then went to Usopp. I'm trying to say that matchups are a hard prediction in One Piece sometimes

Nami ended up with the only female one, Sanji ended up with the third strongest one, Zoro with the second strongest one.
All predictable.
Franky and Chopper arguably could have gone either way.Zoro being in the land of swords and samurai and not getting a traditionalesque sword fight would be a huge letdown.

Greg posted some interesting thoughts about the flashback on twitter just before.
He says the world will never know, but I'm going to hold onto hope forever that we might learn about some of the continuity near misses after the series is done.
Wonder if the weird Tequila Wolf detour falls into this category. Looking forward to seeing Oda smoothtalk his way around that in the SBS.
-
I don't believe I've seen this timeline, does anyone know where it is, if it's public?

There's more than a few online.
The wiki, for all its faults, has a pretty solid one.
Greg's personal one really hasn't been updated in a very long time, not since volume 50-something… though his actual personal notes might be more up to date.
http://www.thegrandline.com/frames.htmlI'm more disappointed the pandaman sightings haven't been updated in 30 volumes but the guy's been busy with actual official content, so…
For a real treat hunt around on that site for his old Dragonball site. That thing was great and I went to it 20 years ago! ...holy crap.

Tequila Wolf was in one of the Blue's with Robin right and Oden passed it during the Grand Line or something? Or was it the other way around? What ever the case I don't think that one needs to be explained at all. A bridge thats been under construction for over 500 years could easily be explained by the workers managing to connect it through the calm belt into neighboring oceans. The bridge could have 2 ends being developed at multiple times as well.

Yeah, built in the East Blue, apparently visited by Oden after Water Seven. It being the far end is what I expect to read in the SBS, but it's still odd. The fact that both ends are snowing is a fine coincidence if it's meant to be two different places.
Actually, I quickly flipped back through the postwar Tequila Wolf bits, and this theory might have more going for it than expected. Robin initially rejects the Revolutionaries' offer to bring her to their leader and goes forward with her mission to reunite with Luffy at Sabaody, choosing to travel along the bridge to get there. The dialogue is fairly specific that she's set off for the far end of the bridge, so that's good evidence that it at least points towards the Grand Line. Still pretty convenient that it seems to snow across the full length of the bridge, but that's the world of One Piece for you.
-
I'm confused on how seeing the bridge is weird. Didn't Roger and Oden meet on Rusukaina? If they can go from Calm Belt Islands to Grand Line Islands, why can't they go from East Blue locations to the Grand Line and back. They weren't amateurs like the SH crew. They had over 10 years of experience and were in their prime

Nope! They're similar looking, but pretty distinct from one another.
Aside from the bridge weirdness, everything that's shown about the journey could take place in a single trip through the Grand Line. Even the island where they met more closely resembles the chapter 140 colour spread, which we could take to mean that it's somewhere in the area of Drum or Alabasta. They go from there to Jaya to Skypiea to Water Seven to the actual Rusukaina, to the bridge, to Sabaody and onward through Fishman Island as shown. If it was meant to be a montage for a longer time I would have expected more detours to the blues, or more things out of place. But would also completely buy that Roger could just go straight through the Calm Belts and visit wherever if he wanted to.

Thanks for correcting me on this. All this time, I thought this was Rusukaina and they are clearly different.

Don't we have a timeline thread here ?
Otherwise I would put the crossing between the Blue seas and the Grand Line among the ambiguities Greg was talking about
-
Anything you could tell us more about this Greg? Who was it?
EDIT:
Imagine doesnt show up for some reason.
Oda gave an autograph to a famous foreign superstar, and Oda said he grew up on his/her movies.
https://imgur.com/a/Rwdd5TR -
It's not a big deal. I mean, it would have turned some clever heads, but it was a genuine miscalculation of a minor, minor aspect that sharp eyes caught in time. Might be mentioned in passing someday anecdotally.
-
could the famous superstar Oda met have anything to do with the LA?
-
Greg do you think Oda dropped Kaido wanting to gain info from Oden as a plot point ? Because this is nowhere to be seen.
-

I wonder who he is. Considering Oda says he grew up with his movies,it shouldnt be someone very young

It's not stated whether it's a "he".

What did you think of chapter 970 Greg? many expected more from this chapter, what are your thoughts?
-

Nope. There are some spot-on guesses floating around though!
Loner,
Really? In what way? It's pretty much exactly what should have happened considering the history we know. 'Expectations' seem to be souring some of the foreign fans these days which is why I don't bother with expectations in the first place. I only think about what can logically transpire in a given scenario knowing OP, Oda, and his current style. Long gone are the days where I expected Usopp to upgrade from a slingshot to a bazooka. (^○^)

I can't see a bazooka, but I can see bug or plant based armor like Heracles. Utility belt and all. Chopper, Luffy and Usopp love the mecha and superhero stuff. Maybe Franky can pull some stuff from the Germa tech or kairoseki in the future
-
These non-expectation havers fascinate me.
I am too invested after two decades to stop myself from formning them

What kind of expectations do you have? I have some too, but definitely not ones as thoroughly formed as a lot of the online fanbase.

His story isn't done yet :)
We know that Kaido will still have a very personal interaction with Momonosuke, his origin of fear of flight. Perhaps Oden's 'usefulness' comes to light then.
If I were to venture a guess, between the jailbreak/rescue effort and everything, it may come to Kaido's attention that Oden can be useful as a 'reader' and uses Momonosuke as leverage. This doesn't seem to gel with how he'd end up being boiled if the scenario becomes a action-based dramatic scene but it seems like some form of these events will take place.

Just read your piece on the similarities between Oden and Luffy. definitely food for thought. Luffy has Roger's Will, for sure, but maybe he's more like Oden in other ways and maybe it's a clue to Luffy's mom. And why would Garp name his son Dragon?
-
So Kaido has Jack, Queen, King and the numbers
Is there any chance he has an ace too?
-
Flying Six (only 2 shown) and Numbers are a mystery so far. That guy that held Higurashi has similar pigtails to Jack. If it's Jack's family member, maybe Jack grew up in the Beast Pirates and ascended through the ranks. That can possibly explain why he views King and Queen as older brothers
-
It's not stated whether it's a "he".
I thought it was wrote "i met him". My bad if i remember badly. But maybe is the opposite.
-
Hi Greg, In this ch 970, Kaido says he was at disadvantage at Oden's return and that if Oden and Hyogoro joined it would have been difficult for him to win. It's hard to believe nor Oden neither Hyo nor Yasu realized the same calculation. And so it's hard to believe why Oden chose to be the fool of a Lord instead of fight and try to free Wano. How do you see this Oden's decision? Can you understand Oden?
