Chapter 957: ULTIMATE
-
-
Chapter of the year for sure. I notice that Sengoku mentioned that the Red Hair Pirates are the most rounded crew of the Yokku. Does that mean Beckman, Yassop, and Lucky Roo all have bounties over one billion beries? I always believed that Ussop would surpass Yassop's bountiy at the end of the series, but now I'm hesitant to make the claim now since I think that Ussop with a billion plus bounty at the end of the series is a little extreme to me.
-
So the chapter makes it more clear that Xebec is dead. I'm sure some expect him to be alive unbeknownst to everyone, but I think for now I'll continue to believe he's dead.

He's literally called God Usopp now, it wouldn't surprise me at all for him to get an extreme bounty like that, Oda certainly has big plans for him. I think us being reminded that his father is a amazing pirate himself further hunts towards that.
-
Usopp will be known as one of Luffy's top guys alongside Zoro and Sanji. I'm pretty sure the story is building towards that.
-
What's the deal with the different names of the pirate island? Scans call it Beehive while the official translation call it Fullalead. I see from the wiki page that it is called Hachinosu in japanese. Can someone elaborate?
I like the overall flow of Sengoku's speech better in the official version. And is Fujitora saying that he was one of the schichibukai or that he was one of the necessary sacrifices to keep them going? It's a bit confusing.
-
I really enjoy the color spread, it reminds me of the old-school color spreads. Don't have any problem with recent color spreads, but throwbacks are always fun.
-
The official translation pretty much cinched my take that the redhair commanders are the individually most impressive. Small scale, better quality and no pushovers in their crew.
The we all used to hang out reveal still feels off, even more so when it comes with a we don't like to talk about it old shame handwave stamped on it. Like i could've lived with BM and Kaido being old crewmates, but why taint Whitebeard with this shit. Oh well it is what it is i guess.

Not sure if they'll all be above a billion, but it might be safe to assume that they're all at least stronger than Jack or Cracker, who'd figure as the weaker parts of Big Mom and Kaido's upper echelon fighters, but given the type of people they are, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually had lower bounties. I do think that whatever Yassop's bounty is, Usopp will surpass it, even if it's an epilogue thing.
Also a question for everyone, how do all of you feel about Fullalead Island instead of Beehive?

You are probably right. Ussop's bounty will probably skyrocket after Elbaf. It just seems surreal that most or all of the SH's could have over a billion beri bounties or close to that after Luffy becomes the PK. Also I'm calling right now Luffy will still not have the highest bounty(I agree with the 5.6 billion figure in the spoiler thread for Luffy)at the end of the series. That honor will belong to his father.

Definitely referring to the necessary sacrifices part.

I don't believe that at all. My guess is that Dragon's bounty is somewhere between Whitebeard's and Roger's, but I think Luffy has to surpass all of them. He's inheriting both of their wills, for one, Roger's by choice, and Dragon's because of logical progression. The Straw Hats have to be the final key to fulfilling the Revolutionary's goal.
-

Sounds more like a town in lucky luke.
Not that beehive had any pirate connotations

Rodger would still have a higher bounty than Luffy EOS due to inflation.:ninja: Seriously though this does make sense when I thought about it. I foresee Luffy, Dragon and most likely Garp will have one hell of a family reunion after Wano. Luffy will probably no see eye to eye with his father at first imo.
-
The chapter flows better with the official text.
Fullalead makes me think of fantasy tale. Just like Laughtale. So I think it fits with the other islands name. Beehive sounds cooler and more grounded.
The scans had me thinking that's where Garp and Roger met but it doesn't seem to be the case. But the official confuse me on what the rocks was. A temporary pact or a crew. Also the handwaving for why it was never mentioned is very much BS.
I do find rocks story interesting. A pirate that wanted to be king and the proto revolutionary. I just don't like all the BS tied to it like having everyone on his crew or how he diminish Whitebeard. Also I find it really weird that his bounty would be lower than Whitebeard with such forces and ambitions.
-
Kaido and Luffy tied important people into their crews, but if that happend in the past it is bullshit? So Rox has to overthrow the WG with civil militia mooks only and no cheating? People are complaining about things you'd never imagine.

This chapter is AWESOME!! Totally a hype chapter for the fans to rejoice, but done just RIGHT. Since I won’t focus too much on it, I’ll just leave a small note saying that I really appreciate how Oda spent big panels for each bounty reveal, they were beautiful to see, very visually appealing. Even better was the nice and slow pace dedicated to the lore being told, always delivering a new punch at each turn of the page, which comes from great understanding of the manga form.
What puts the chapter over the top though is the marvelous infodump, obviously, which brings some deep thematic implications to the narrative, especially regarding Rocks and his gigantic purpose in the story.
By now I suppose that everybody in the OP fandom already knows that one of the main themes of the series is “inherited will”, and Rocks fills up a very special role in this narrative. It’s not an original thought, by I’ll go on my ramble here.
This chapter brings some hints of important similarities between Rocks and Black Beard, as many readers have noticed. At the heart of the comparison is that the nature of their leadership and the essence of their crew are pretty much the same: a lot of powerful individuals brought together by the desire for power, but lacking any personal affinity at all and just about to break apart from inside out. Besides that, there is also the fact that Teach is the new ruler of Beehive, building up his legacy in the same island where Rocks kickstarted his legendary crew. Even weirder is that BB’s ship goes by the name “Saber of Xebec”, making reference to Rocks’ given name even if it’s just a random coincidence.
I don’t know if there is any personal relationship between the two of the them, or if Teach just idolizes Rocks’ legacy, but that’s not the point. What matters is that both are flagships of the same ideology that seizes to take over the world through destruction. In this world of wills inherited through the flow of time, Teach has inherited Rocks’ ideals of dominance and chaotic supremacy.
The most interesting thing is that these two men also carry the name of the D., and suddenly a new pattern starts to show up in the narrative. Teach is not just an exception anymore.
In a nutshell, I believe there are two main ideological faction inside the clan of the D. that are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Therefore, we shouldn’t see the will of the D. as an unified ideal against the established order anymore, but rather as a much more complex puzzle. One of these factions is much more about the supremacy of power, about men conquering men through force and imposing his will over the world; as for the other faction, it is all about freedom and fraternity, about men cooperating with the fellow men with respect in order to build up value and happiness together. Oh boy, right now I wish I had read more neoclassical and anarchist authors, because it seems to me that these factions are the two side of human nature explored by this type of literature, some authors more optimistic and others more pessimistic about the reality of our communion together.
This duality is now represented by Luffy vs Black Beard, and before them by Roger vs Rocks, and in the distant past this same conflict was probably in place between Joyboy and another D.
All that said_, the world of One Piece portrays other ideological forces beyond the clan of the D._, and the most prominent of them all is represented by the TENRYUUBITO through the current World Government. And that’s the main “triforce” of political ideas of this series.
Obviously, there are more shades of grey in the story. For example, the Marines are an organization under the WG to protect the rule of the Tenryuubito as guard dogs, but they also carry an ethical purpose of peace that goes beyond all the politics above them, and that’s when the sense of justice of each soldier shines the most, especially people like Garp, Smoker and Coby that believe that their job is to serve the people, not the world nobility. I’d say the Marines are the fourth most important faction ideologically, yet a little less important than the other three because they are subdued by the dominant order of the WG.
What makes the GOD VALLEY INCIDENT so fascinating is that it is a microcosmos of the whole narrative, a great war of unlikely alliances and inevitable clashes between all these factions. Roger, Rocks, Garp and the Tenryuubito all in the same place competing against each other. Oh, and I bet that the Gorousei were there fighting too, at least the older ones!
It’s interesting to think that the three protagonists of the God Valley Incident were all D., and it seems that each one of them had a different purpose in life. It’s funny that just a moment before I was posing a duality inside the clan of the D., but Garp actually brings a different answer to whatever Rocks and Roger each represent for the narrative.
At last, this chapter makes me think a lot about who is going to be the final boss of the series. The two main candidates were always Black Beard and the Tenryuubito, unless some really weird plot twist takes place at the end of OP. Well, despite Teach being the greatest evil according to the common sense, I argue that the WG was the most prominent entity in the series across all sagas, and the Tenryuubito would be the most emblematic final villain for the story from the perspective of the lore of the series and the political ideas behind the story. However, now that Rocks engraved his name in the mythology of OP, it may be the case that the darkness that Teach throws at the world is the ultimate threat that Oda wants to explore in his masterpiece.
What a chapter! One Piece is awesome!

You don't know how long he's been active. He could have been active only for a couple of years, like Luffy. WB was active for over 40 years.
-
Can somebody point out to me on which SBS we get to know the name of Blackbeards ship?
-
Can somebody point out to me on which SBS we get to know the name of Blackbeards ship?
No SBS, Vivre Card.
-
They say the captain of the Rocks pirates is dead, do you guys believe this?
-
And they are legit?
-
And they are legit?
Well it's a databook, and Oda was somewhat involved in it, so it's somewhat legit.
Personally I don't give a damn about it.
Apparently the Vivre Card of Shanks said he was already a Yonko when he visited East Blue, this chapter said he wasn't. -
They say the captain of the Rocks pirates is dead, do you guys believe this?
Well Roger started another pirate age with the WG still there and smiling. I think he achieved at least the goal of defeating his own Dark D.
-
They say the captain of the Rocks pirates is dead, do you guys believe this?
Blackbeard has Moriah now, so does it even matter?
Basically all translations seem to imply that the Rocks got together for one specific purpose, so I think maybe what we're going for here is some kind of Ocean's 11 thing with Rocks calling all the big names of the time to Pirate's Island and convincing them to join forces with his master plan to overthrow the World Nobles and get all their money.
-
I've been reading the spoilers since Wednesday morning and just noticed last night what the title was smh
-
Sounds pretty strong of a title to me.

Why would Moriah matter? A revived Rocks is nothing to care about compared to the real deal, especially when you need a strong shadow to make use of it.

I believe it. I'd go even farther and say that I'm starting to think that the lurking legend thing and the "greatest enemy" the Strawhats face are two different things.
-

Luffy is already at 1.5B despite 2 year hiatus. And he was the biggest baddest terrorist menacing the world where the yonkos mostly chills in a small corner of the world. Also he was unstoppable until the bestest pirate teamed up with the bestest marine.
An interesting reveal could be that he did have the biggest bounty but they erased it in the cover up.

I would find it weird if at this point in the story I learned the 11 supernovas except Luffy were from the one secret crew I never knew about. I would also not like it because I prefer Law with his connection to Doffly. ANd I would think it doesn't match Kidd personality And I would hate that it robs them from having diverse origins.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
No. I think it's the Im of the pirate world@Shiebs:
They say the captain of the Rocks pirates is dead, do you guys believe this?
-
They say Xebec is dead, but that doesn't mean he isn't irrelevant in the story. If I remember correctly, Moria was captured by Catrina Devon and BB. What if Blackbeard found Rock's body and he or one of his commanders has Moria's DF now.
Edit: I didn't see Sengokusgoat mentioning the same thing.
-
Not a fan of the image the different yonkos have for their bounties.
-
Why would Moriah matter? A revived Rocks is nothing to care about compared to the real deal, especially when you need a strong shadow to make use of it.
What if a new owner of Moria's fruit unlocked the awakened ability?
-

Still we don't know how long he's been active. Could've been active for 5 years doing regular pirate shit and planing his master piece to take over the world.
In his last year he started with his badass plan to take over the world, united all the big shots, and right where he wanted to do his heist, he got owned by Garp and Roger. No need for a new bounty.
Shouldn't have used Luffy as an example, Luffy's bounty raises don't apply to anyone else, they are extraordinary. Let's say Law or Kid.
The Yonko own half of the Grand Line and are feared all over the world. An inte4resting reveal could be that he did have the biggest bounty butthey erased it in the cover up.
Really? For me that's the obvious reason.
-
Fun fact: I don't know if this is mentioned, but a xebec according to Webster dictionary is: a usually 3-masted Mediterranean sailing ship with long overhanging bow and stern.
-
And I would hate that it robs them from having diverse origins.
I saw no Whitebeard in BMs flashback. Being frenemies in Rox's crew for maybe a year =/= same origins.

The Yonko own half of the Grand Line and are feared all over the world.Maybe they existed for 2 months and were a blip on thew radar. But based on how Sengoku presented the information and what information he gave it seems very unlikely and more of a case Oda trying to juggle several hype balls at the same time.
Really? For me that's the obvious reason.
Well that's just headcannon for now which means nothing and it seems odd that bounty is where Sengoku would draw thew line.

I love that spread. It makes me think of just having fun.
I saw no Whitebeard in BMs flashback. Being frenemies in Rox's crew for maybe a year =/= same origins.
Let me try to rrephrase I would prefer if they didn't have interconnected rise to power. I prefer if Big Mom has a her own I destroyed everyonev to my way to power while Whitebeard chilled on a random crew for a couple years instead of we all went to the Rox crew academy for badasses.
I can understand liking it. Sometimes I like brother baddasses at the top of world. It was in Toriko and I really liked it.

Thinking that Act 3 will start next week? Otherwise we may get to see what happened to each Shichibukai when the marines moved on them.
-
Hrm, so official translations has gone from Rox to Rocks. I guess when it was mentioned just once changing it to make it clear it was a name was the way to go, but when it shows up 80 times in the same chapter you don't have much choice.
Has the chapter where it was Rox been printed in physical form yet?
Thinking that Act 3 will start next week? Otherwise we may get to see what happened to each Shichibukai when the marines moved on them.
Not a chance. That's a cliffhanger Oda will let sit and stew for a year before we know any more.
-
First want to point out that Big Mom's silhouette is looking fine in the picture of the Rocks pirates.
!
Also, I think we can presume that Shiki is on the very left of this picture. I've been combing through to see if we could make out anyone else, even someone we don't know, with no luck whatsoever. Looked for both marines and pirates, but Oda was pretty honed in on The big 3 when showing the Rocks Pirates. Would have loved to see a hint of Shakky or someone else unexpected.

I just want more Buggy panels. I agree that Oda will likely sit on the fate of the Shichibukai for a while. We may find out Boa's fate through Luffy and see his reaction to it after Wano.

Instead of Big Mom, she's soccer mum in that picture.

The spoiler thread was way too huge to glance through, so just gonna skip all that and go here.
Can't say I was really as blown away by the chapter as the hype led me to believe. Bounties are cool and all, but most of the Rocks pirate past stuff I just wasn't terribly interested in. Would've rather seen all this in a flashback or inferred it from Big Mom and Kaido's conversations going forward. It was a fine chapter, but the least interesting of the stuff I'm interested in seeing before we get back to Wano.
The Garp/Roger team up is cool and it really connects well with the Smoker/Luffy dynamic. That was the most interesting part to me.
-
I'm glad the official Viz was willing to make the change over from Rox to Rocks.
Too bad the same chapter had them altering Oda's art to go from Teach to Teech, and still using Elbaph instead of Elbaf….
-
What's the deal with the different names of the pirate island? Scans call it Beehive while the official translation call it Fullalead. I see from the wiki page that it is called Hachinosu in japanese. Can someone elaborate?
Stephen explained it on the podcast once; Hachinosu literally means beehive, but the implication is of someone being riddled with bullet holes. He went with the term "pumped full a' lead" to give the same idea.
-
I just realized that Kaido's bit about Luffy and Law's "little pirate games" makes him so full of shit now that we know he was Rock's cabin boy. XD
-
Wait, doesn't that mean that he knows a lot and not to take this as a joke? From what was said, they were attacking each other. Interesting that all of the ideologies were able to fit within 1 crew. WB wants a family, BM wants "equality" in a sense, and Kaido wants the strongest and I guess a thrill from a gruesome fight or war (whatever else is explained later because I doubt he's fleshed out fully).
Maybe Kaido's lust for that battle left him half dead and BM saved him. This would possibly answer why he owes her and he brushes it off because he rather die in a ridiculous battle than live in a boring era.
-
The more information Oda gives us, the more I realize we still don't know…
Why did Roger defend the Celestial Dragons with Garp?
The most likely answer is partly suggested by Sengoku: Roger was inevitably a rival to Rocks, given that they were both(if not already the equivalent to Yonko at this point, which is implied) some of the most dangerous pirate crews. Roger might have already specifically chose this destination to clash with him, because he knew that the Rocks pirates wanted to slaughter the World Government and become King... and Roger had no interest in those mad men becoming the rulers of the world. Garp was simply there to do his job. Garp might have actually less to do with this victory then he would want to admit... Not only because he had to team-up with a pirate to win, but because Roger's crew might have actually carried most of the battle themselves for their own reasons... and for the sake of the Navy's reputation, and the fact that Roger (a pirate) could be the hero in the end (a reoccurring motif of he narrative), he really doesn't want to/can't be made to speak honestly about it.I love that Sengoku is ready to spill all the beans. The navy seems to really hate the Celestial Dragons and World Government, yet are 100% gung-ho about whatever they think is right, or whatever their orders are. I wonder if the admirals will always been left in the dark until the last moment, when in their loss - they realize they were fighting for the wrong side and the right side, all along? Or... will Imu's "side" become it's own independant thing, and the Navy ends up turning against it? (Unless Sword is specifically the cabal being brewed to challenge the WG someday).
-
The coolest thing about Beehive is that it is the "pirate's paradise island" where the Davy Back Fight was created.
Let the theories come.
-

That's my headcannon for why Whitebeard would end up on Rocks' crew, despite having a personality that doesn't gel. Whatever crew Whitebeard was with lost it, and Rocks got ahold of a guy who would go on to be the World's Strongest. There's plenty of alternative explanations, too, to be sure, but I find this one interesting.
-
I wonder what Shanks ultimately did to manifest himself as an emperor. Blackbeard quickly conquered Whitebeard's territories after his death, but it wasn't until the Grudge War that the world labeled him an emperor, so I expect some specific event to have occurred in Shanks' case as well.
Judging by that panel of Roger and Garp facing the Rocks, Roger already didn't wear the strawhat anymore at that point, interesting.
-
Didn't notice Fujitora was travelling through the Calm Belt until now. Meaning he's in charge of arresting Hancock or that the admirals clashing with the Revs was more than just a clash and the Revs were outright defeated and arrested.
Also, is it just me or does Rocks' silhouette look kind of like Dragon?
