This chapter has to hold some record in showing so many plotlines in a significant and entertaining way. From Lola to Law, I'm just pleased.
I'm with Zoro there. How many of these stupid ninjas are there is a good summation of what i thought when they showed up in an already crammed arc. Atleast he's done away with like a third now so that's something of an improvement

I really think Oda has made cutoffs like this specifically for the anime to fill in so that there will be good and natural filler for the arc.

They'll be back.
The only ones from the Oniwabanshu that Zoro has cut down are Raijin and Fuujin (one in this chapter, the other before escaping with Hiyori). They were the only two going for him anyway. The rest probably stayed in that whole mess in the capital. All those ninjas on the ground are just random footsoldiers.
The fact Stephen managed to make the "sunacchi" work in english… I'm impressed but not surprised.
So I decided to count all the graves of the people from 10 years ago, and I gave up after around 100 because I was losing track of which ones I already counted. But I think there's around 120.
Great chapter! Can't wait to see whats going on with Drake. I'm thinking Law managed to get some kind of important word out to Drake during that chaotic battle and Drake is stewing on it. Maybe something about their history and the Barrels Pirates? Though I think it's more likely that in the confusion Drake managed to get his personality swapped. Someone like Sanji could be infiltrating the Animal Pirates while Sanji's real body with Drake's personality is being tied down and gagged in safety.
I actually would have liked to have seen a seemingly related panel of Sanji being restrained by unknown hands and then later we learn he wasn't captured by the enemy at all. Just one of those all according to plan things.

Agreed! I remember I used to lurk around 2007 and a ton of the arguments would always be settled(more or less) with Stephen's scripts. To think that he'd eventually be the official translator is the stuff of dreams.
Hmmm now that I think about it I want Stephen's autograph! Next comicon I'm coming with his first translated volume and a sharpie.
Probably one of the more enjoyable recent chapters to me.
To shorten what I said in the spoiler thread. Momo's inner thought on how all these people just see him as his father and how much pressure he's starting to feel is a great Momo moment. Probably the first time I'm actually starting to like the kid and feel for his situation. Also starting to hate the "citizens of Wano" with their obsession with Oden. Acting like a child can really be their savoir just because he's their old Hero's kid.
Ashura is my favorite Scabbard now. Much better than Kawamatsu completely disregarding consequences of being jailed for all this time for a stupid barf joke. I hope we actually commit to the detail that some of these guys should be 20 years stronger than the time travelers, and it's not just a joke for this scene.
Would've liked a line or something from Killer. If he's just got the normal smile defects, he should've been able to say something. Kidd's more of a wildcard than I expected now, so eagerly await to see how he's gonna play in all this.
I'm really hoping for some fun shenanigans with Law/Hawkins/Drake. How long has Hawkins been part of the crew anyway (also being how long Kidd was in jail)? Week? Couple weeks? Also I guess I can't tell who's the one that's acting weird between Hawkins and Drake. My impression was Hawkins, but others say it's Drake?

They don't necessarily see Momo as their savior, but rather as a goal/symbol to fight for. Him being here, along with the Scabbards, means Toki's words were true after all. Anyhow, after all of this is done, they need someone to lead them, and someone from the beloved Kozuki clan is the best choice to rally them to fight once more. As the title and Hyou both suggest, he represents their future after this is all over. Regarding the savior role, at least in terms of whom they hope can actually defeat Kaido and Orochi, that would be attributed to the Scabbards more than anything due to the prophecy.
I think describing it as an obsession is unfair as well. Oden is evidently a truly great man, its hardly any different from the adoration characters like Fisher Tiger or Otohime received. His era, although it abruptly ended, represents a time when Wano wasn't shit. It's not surprising they would latch onto anything that presents an opportunity for them to go back to those days, which of course includes Momo himself.

It's been 2 weeks minimum since 795.
And Drake is the one that's acting weird, evidenced by him brushing off Hawkins with "it's nothing". Also unlike Hawkins, he was technically unaccounted for, whereas with Hawkins we know that he was busy apprehending Law.
You'd be suprised by the kind of emotions a figurehead can evoke.
Now it's all for the motherland, for the royal family
I really think Oda has made cutoffs like this specifically for the anime to fill in so that there will be good and natural filler for the arc.
If only the anime actually took advantage of that. Instead they usually just pick a random gag and run it into the ground.
Hawkins : tell me your plans, Law
Law: heh heh heh.. I will tell you everything.. tells everything
Law: but do you think that Luffy will follow the plan? You have no idea!
Kid always finds a reason to not fight Luffy. It's entertaining. Wonder what will be the excuse next time. He needs to stop and admit he likes him like Katakuri did.
If only the anime actually took advantage of that. Instead they usually just pick a random gag and run it into the ground.
They actually did a good job in Whole Cake Island with this. Example: they showed how Sanji managed to come back in his room after the meeting with Capone to do the alliance.
Quick thoughts cos I'm still pretty wiped out from a weekend illness.
Chiffon wanting to find Lola is a pretty logical for her as a character, but Lola was last seen heading the opposite way down the Grand Line, right? Going past Water Seven? So yeah, I don't think that's going to work out and the real plot of this cover story will jump us in the coming weeks (and then immediately be interrupted by another Stampede colour spread for the movie's release).
Kid rebuilding his arm is one of my favourite panels of recent weeks from a purely artistic standpoint. There's so much goddamn detail I love it.
The Momo spread sets the stage for the young man taking the throne at the end of the arc pretty well, but tbh King Riku got the same panel 20 volumes ago and I liked his version better. It's a little disappointing that after all the teasing Kawamatsu can't stick around any longer. I hope he transitions into Zoro's plot thread quickly.
The flashback sequence was a good and incredibly necessary one. It's realistic to show the weight of the last 20 years bearing down on the country, and how some absolutely would lose faith because of that. I think it puts the end of Zou into perspective as well: after 20 years of that kind of pressure and uncertainty, when proof that the prophecy would come true did appear its no wonder they were willing to hold to the last man to defend it.
The official explanation for Sunachi is surprisingly clever. I doubt it actually lines up with the Japanese version the same way, but it's great that it could be made to run so smoothly in English.
I'm looking forward to the lines about why it took 20 years to be used as theory fodder. We're being set up to believe Toki specifically chose this time period for a reason. Could she see the future? Or does she know something about a weakness of kaido or Orochi that only comes up however many years?
I think I saw some people upset Zoro got to take out so many ninjas all by his lonesome. Well, that's what they get for jumping him together like that. This is Japanese territory - the Inverse Ninja Law is in full effect!
Aaand Law is the captive. Right when everyone was expecting it to be a weaker Straw Hat, Oda was like "ha, you think I'd give Law a break from his suffering?"
My current pet theory about Drake acting strange is that the camouflage tech in Sanji's raid suit is also capable of illusions and he's used that to go undercover as Drake. Doing that Mr Prince thing for the first time in a long time.
Fun chapter overall, hard to say what could be focussed on next week with so many different subplots thrown up in the air on it. I'm hoping for more Law tho.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
They actually did a good job in Whole Cake Island with this. Example: they showed how Sanji managed to come back in his room after the meeting with Capone to do the alliance.
They also showed the offscreen parts of Brook's encounter with Big Mom, but the way it ended up looking and playing out was super disappointing imo. Sometimes ending on a dramatic point and letting the readers' imagination fill in the rest is a valid tactic for a better story.
You know what would have been a great filler opportunity though? Working some of the Ace novel into his appearance on Wano. Even a background cameo from Masked Deuce would have been a really neat way to solidify some of the psuedo-canon extra material in there. There's like 19 whole members of Ace's crew they could have fleshed out rather than stretching just the existing Wano characters.
Damn, my weekend was so crammed I just read the chapter now. It's a fun chapter. Not a fan of so many cutoffs but it is what it is.
As for Drake, I think Law managed to switch one of SH into him. Seems like a most fun development to me. Pretty sure I'm not the only one who thought of it, but haven't had a chance to skim through spoiler discussion.

That's certainly not the first or second thing that comes to my mind about Kidd.

No the first thing that does come to mind when you think about Kidd is his hilarious perpetrator to victim turn. He's come full circle from nailing people on boards for wanting to go home to being the one who doesn't want to play anymore

Or maybe he switched bepo, shachi, penguin with drake and the other two men behind him. He would need to at least talk with the straw hats so they don't spoil the plan, freaking out when they wake up in new bodies, and I doubt hawkins gave him time to do that. But his crew is all too familiar with his powers so they would know what he is up to without talking in advance.
So that settles Kidd vs. Queen.
He doesn't feel too invested in Kaido himself, but referencing Killer's fate (while leaving the scene tsundere style) sets it up nicely.
And with that said, I hope Kidd will be the one to lose that fight. He's not a real protagonist, he can fail again no prob. Keeping Queen busy during the war is convenient enough, I guess.
One calamity down, two to go.
I think Kidd's target right now is Apoo.
I think Kidd's target right now is Apoo.
But that has almost zero emotional weight?
I mean I'm already not invested in Kidd and his own gang of assholes, but at least I can get behind him avenging the smile'd Killer.
Isn't he going to try and find the rest of his crew?

Seems King is the one in charge of torture, we didn't see queen feed the smile fruit tot someone. So it could be King that gave kamazo the smile fruit. Kidd Flying Magneto style vs pteranodon king.

Queen is the one in charge of torture, at least that's what King implied ("this torture loving bastard").
But you might have a point, maybe feeding people Smiles isn't considered torture, but the natural step AFTER people are broken into obedient soldiers. That said, the smilification might be King's responsibility after all, and thus Kidd wants to go after him instead?

Actually it was Queen who called King a "torture loving bastard". A section from the OP magazine Vol. 6 also reiterated that King loves torture.
That's certainly not the first or second thing that comes to my mind about Kidd.
The first time, Luffy says he'll be the 1 to find the OP and Kid tells Killer that people would laugh at him for that same statement. He was taken aback by it, almost frozen in the moment. An actual rival for the same goal. Killer had to snap him out of it. Even before Luffy said it, he was delighted that he got to see Luffy standing on his square. Now he's pissed at the betrayal and what happened to Killer. Even called Luffy "crazy" for wanting to fight Kaido again. Based on Kid's character, deep down, he respects that Luffy would still fight Kaido after the Almighty L. I would even say, if they weren't rivals, Kid would be more open about it.

Alright, I guess that's it then.
So Queen is open for…?

Queen makes disease spreading weapons, so it fits if he fights the strongest doctor on luffy's side, as in Law? Chopper could maybe help too, same way how nami helped luffy with cracker.
That Leaves jack for? another supernova or mink kings? Stongest supernova after law and Kidd is maybe zoro, unless apoo, hawkins, x drake with betray kaidou. But minks kings still make the most sense, by far. Unless shuten maru will finish his duel with jack.
Jack is full fishman, so jimbe if he shows up, or kawamatsu make sense too.
Screw Fishman Jack. Give us Full Mamooth Jack or Mamooth Fishman Jack.

That's just boring.
In comparison, just imagine Drake fanboying his mind out in Sanji's body, with access to Germa suit.

Maybe the reason Drake is acting weird is that he got to see Germa 66 soldier in action just in front of him. He's star-struck.

Well at first I thought he's just unsure if he wants to be on that side, due to seeing Germa in action and other things.
But then I started considering there's a good chance Law wouldn't have been caught so easilly without pulling a trick or two beforehand.
And Drake recognizing Germa suit is definitely a set up for something. Maybe this.
When there's so many scene skips the possibilities multiply. There's no way of knowing where everyone was at a given moment and what kind of exchanges transpired between characters.

IDK, there's just something about the citizens of Wano (and to a lesser extent, all the scabbards) that really annoy me. I feel like part of it is just all the Momo worship. I know we're not going in that direction, but I'd love for Momo to get fed up with it and yell at everyone. He's not his Dad, he's just a kid, and he's in no way ready to rule, fight, or lead them in the coming war. What matters is removing Orochi, not who leads afterwards, and it should definitely not be Momo. The big impossible wall to achieving that is Kaido and the Calamities, and Momo should deflect their faith to Luffy and his friends to deal with them. After that, there's nothing for the coward Orochi to hide behind and nothing for the alliance to fear. But meh, from my point of view the citizens of Wano are just really unintelligent and annoying.
The minor Oden issue I just have is the more you tell me how great he was, the more you push me away from liking him.
I'm honestly more invested in seeing whatever the supernovas here in Wano are gonna do as things continue than I am in actually saving Wano. Although I do really like Ashura now at least.

I really wanted sanji and zoro to fight queen and king respectively
Although If not Zoro, I would love for Marco to fight king, two Yonko right hand commanders who are also ancient birds and fire users

I've been thinking that King vs Zoro and Sanji vs Queen is going to happen since the moment they were introduced together and insulting each other.

Yeah that seems to happen a lot with there other enemies too, Mr1 and Mr2 and Jabara and Kaku were both like that
This chapter was a decent "cool down" after all the action we had last chapter overall. I have no issue with this chapter.
However, it does touch on something that I feel is a missed opportunity with One Piece as a whole. I'm referring to the page where the prisoners are questioning if Luffy can really be trusted, due to his being a pirate. Only to have Momonosuke end that uncertainty immediately. Now, I understand why Oda downplays the fact that his protagonists are outlaws. But I often wonder what interesting directions this series could go in if that aspect of the story wasn't de-emphasized as much. Attempting to live as a wanted criminal isn't easy, having that as an obstacle for the main characters could present some intriguing conflict, like the example I mentioned before in this chapter. It's not a big deal, the page I cite from this chapter just brings up "what could have been" possibilities I like to think about.
I don't even care about the SH reuniting anymore. I want to see the Scabbards together. They look so happy when they make up. Neko and Inu. Inu and Asura.
Kyoshiro was nonchalant about Yasuie's broadcast in 941 and death in 944. Doubt he's Denjiro

no possibilities are required, because it doesnt matter whether the prisoners trust him or not. all along since the start, most of the villagers the straw hats have saved did not really trust pirates but they still went ahead and did their stuff.
Kyoshiro was nonchalant about Yasuie's broadcast in 941 and death in 944. Doubt he's Denjiro
What if Denjiro was always evil?
I've also seen some suggestions that Kyoshiro is Denjiro's son or has some other kind of close connection with him. So that's something else to think about. Just to confirm, we don't know how old Kyoshiro is, right? (Since I'm curious how old he would have been when Orochi took over.)
I liked the chapter decently well. Nice to have Luffy reunite with Momo and Tama, and we now have Kin's and Inu's more minor current storyline about their conflict with Ashura resolved. I hope we can just stay away from Udon Prison for a few chapters now (unless Act 2 ends within like a couple chapters and we jump to it after a timeskip or something); gotten pretty bored of that. But then again, been saying that for a few chapters now, and it keeps showing stuff there.
Kid's decision doesn't really surprise me. He's much less friendly and open to people than Luffy is, and I don't really blame him for having a distrust of alliances after Apoo and Hawkins (seemingly) abandoned him. (But then again, seeing what his personality is like, I can't entirely blame them, either, for not wanting to stick with him, lulz.)
And, surprise surprise, they skipped over the stuff in Rasetsu Town. Ugh. Well, I'm hoping there'll be some kind of brief flashback or even explanation of what happened, so maybe that'll be satisfactory. Also, since I saw some people questioning it, I got the impression from all three translations that Hawkins thought Drake was acting weird, and not the other way around. Drake is the one who's brushing it off like "It's nothing".
I was a little surprised that Law was the one to get captured again, since that leaves him three-for-three with getting beaten up and/or captured in the major arcs he's been in post-TS. (Not counting Zou, where the only bad things that happened to anybody were in flashbacks before Luffy's group got there.) But I think I can be onboard with it. Maybe he's just smirking at Hawkins saying he'll force him to talk like "Fat chance, bitch"…or maybe he has a plan. The theory that he body-switched somebody (like one of the SHs) into Drake, and that's why the latter is acting weird, would at least be cool if for no other reason than to show that Oda hasn't just decided to conveniently pretend that power stopped existing.
Kyoshiro was nonchalant about Yasuie's broadcast in 941 and death in 944. Doubt he's Denjiro
Kyoshiro is the stereotypical japanese fox-face character (I forgot the official word for it, it's not Kitsune), so I wouldn't put value on anything he does or says.
Speaking of sly characters, I almost forgot about the fact that Hyori is a scheming bitch behind the scenes. All these panels with Zoro really did some work to make me forget about it for the most part.
