Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t there an older interview where Oda said something like “I had finalized all of the major details of Wano during Zou.”? Wano heading for a direction he “didn’t imagine” sounds… concerning.
Oda's Interviews

Sounds like he was more surprised than us to see Big Mom appear.
-
- Oda feels satisfied but worried at the same time when he draws a good arc.
When he drew Enies Lobby arc, he felt, “It will be impossible for me to draw more touching story than this arc.”
Legitimate concern. There were so many well-executed, touching scenes in Enies Lobby / Water 7.
I don't think Oda can top that, not even with Luffy dying. People are mentally prepared for that, at least to some degree.

I've been rereading Water 7/Enies Lobby this past week and yeah, it's pretty packed with emotional scenes one after another. It's also the first time the Strawhats truly went against the World Government and shaked the whole world at its core with their actions.
It also had Captain T-Bone starring, so what's not to love. -
He is totally right about Water Seven/Enies Lobby. I feel like when he wrote and draw that arc he was in a state of grace. Everything about it its perfect, even the little scenes and the little details. It will be probably be always the best arc,i feel like only the ending arc can hope to surpass it.
About Wano 'going in different directions than imagined' i am not concerned at all. When Oda decides to changes,it means he has a very valid reason so i will trust him. And i am glad he has an open mind about changing things unlike some other writers (Carter Bays and Craig Thomas writers of the terrible How I Met Your Mother ending,i am looking at you!)

Yeah I have faith that oda is good at creating a story with a satisfying ending even if he sees the story unfolding differently than ti did originally. Set required points can be an issue as seen in S8 of GoT
-
I can live with W7/EL being the emotional peak of the series. We've had other peaks and plateaus that are good 'nuff. I'm more bothered by the guy who claims to love working out but only hits the gym once a week. He ain'tgonna make it.

I have to think it's concerning Kaido. Mainly how in the hell the good guys can beat such a monster.
-
2004 had to be right before Water 7. How many arcs or even major characters will Oda think up and extend the manga going forward? He has the ending and major points thought up, but I remember reading about the Supernovas and i'm not gonna rule out more of that happening in the future. Highly doubt One Piece ends before 2025

Ace´s death and especially the aftermath reached that though but since then, certainly true
-
Ace's death didn't make me feel anything. It felt like such a plot device to boost Luffy's character, and the immediate reaction was so over-the-top that I couldn't take it seriously. And then Whitebeard gets a badass death like 2 chapters later, so it overshadows Ace for me. The setting up of the timeskip was pretty good tho, as was the reunion in Sabaody. Very different context from what was going on in EL though.

The death of Ace in itself had no big impact, we saw him for a few chapters before in total anyway, i agree, its meaning for Luffy, having him go through 70 chapters of trying to get to Ace and all the struggles, only to completely fail at the hand, and seeing how he questioned himself to that degree, yep for me at least it is on par with Water 7 and Enies Lobby.

What really sucks for Luffy is that the escape should have been a success.
All of Luffy's hard work was unfairly undone by his brother being a fucking idiot.
The whole ordeal was effective at making me feel sorry for Luffy (one of the most believable "mind break" moments in shonen),
but I didn't feel much for Ace himself since it was entirely his own fault in the first place. -

So yeah, Ace made a dumb mistake, but the Marineford Arc only exists because of the exact same character flaw.

Eiichiro Oda: "I finished reading Glass Mask,so now i'm reading Rose of Versailles. Oscar was a woman?!"I dont know how many of you guys know Rose of Versailles, but the fact that Oda is reading it is an amazing news to me. I love it,its an amazing manga! And i would love to see a character like Oscar in One Piece. I hope it gives him some inspiration in this sense :D
-
I just realized i missed an opportunity to shit on Ace again.
Now i feel sad
-
I don't know much about Rose of Versailes, but if Oscar is who I am thinking of, then she being a man never crossed my mind in the first place, lol.
-
Apart from the character of Oscar, maybe Oda is reading Rose of Versailles also for 'research' on the Revolutionaries Army and the Celestial Dragons. I bet Oda has already read a lot of books about the French Revolution, but Rose of Versailles is a manga that describes very well how the Revolution started, both politically and in the streets. And there are also a lot of rough scenes where the nobles act basically like the Celestial Dragons.
-
For me, Oscar is very similar to Cavendish…

Facts. Moreover, we're seeing that EVERY main character in One Piece has a character flaw leading to their undoing. Ace's was that he wouldn't ever run. Sanji's weakness is women. Luffy's weakness has always been (since chapter 1) that he jumps into situations he can't necessarily control without a plan. I think we'll continue to see these occur until the protagonists are forced to overcome them. The only alternative is death.

Thats actually Luffy's strenght for me (and Whitebeard seemed to think the same)

you’re right. I think it’s both.

The broader interview is about The Promised Neverland, but in this talk with former One Piece editor Sugita he talks about playing Pokemon Go with Oda when they had to go anywhere together. In fact, he says it was Oda who got him hooked on the game.
Just from personal experience, I'd say Pokemon Go is nothing but a good thing for Oda's mission to stay a bit more in shape and do some walking every day. Hope there's some good spawns around his studio!

I grew up with it here in Germany, especially watching it with my sister, though it was the pre Dragonball era and before i consciously watched anime.

A mistake?
Things that Ace could have done to avoid being killed:
- Become a Marine like Garp told him to. He'd have been a Rear Admiral or Vice Admiral by the time anyone remotely realized he was Gol D Roger's kid– and they wouldn't have cared. In fact, they would have celebrated having the son of the most notorious pirate being a hero of the Marines.
- Taken the offer to become a Shichibukai when it was offered to him. Again-- they would have immediately forgiven his heritage so long as they could say he was working for them.
- As he knew Blackbeard had some impossible to beat devil fruit-- he didn't have to go charging into an all-or-nothing fight against an opponent he obviously couldn't beat. In fact-- where on earth was the rest of Ace's crew? What sort of "fleet commander" has no fleet? Luffy has a crew to pull him out of the fire whenever things go belly-up for a reason.
- Once he did get free, he didn't have to stupidly stand in the middle of the war with Luffy and just shoot the breeze for minutes on end. They should have focused on getting behind allied lines and then they could have their little chat.
- When Luffy was being attacked, he should have moved Luffy instead of blocking the attack with his torso. Even if he or Luffy would have gotten mildly harmed had he moved Luffy-- it wasn't as though Luffy was going to be in any position to either fight back any better or escape after Ace was punched through the heart.
And those 5 are probably just scratching the surface of really dumb choices that Ace made that brought him to where he was at that point. Any one of those choices being different would have been enough to alter his fate for the better.
-
How can you hold Ace wanting to become a pirate and not a Marine against him? That was a life choice that could have resulted in any number of ways. Both life styles are filled with tons of dangers. Even fighting on the side of justice doesn't guarantee that he'd avoid Akainu's magma fist. See the scared fodder and Aokiji. He could have ended up like Jimbei, not dead but a War Lord still on the receiving end of some lava.
-
Now now people let's just be glad that Ace is dead regardless of the circumstances

Remember you are a mod and people cant ignore your comments (Yes i just tried lol)
-
Ace wasted his dad and sibbling(s)'s efforts after his family begged him not to. I have no sympathy for his death and the trauma he unncesarily put Luffy.
I don't hate Ace. I just hate Ace in Marineford(which is most of his screentime).
-
We'll sadly never be rid of him since he possessed Sabo's body.

Yes its very popular in Europe. Really a great manga and anime.

Today July 22nd is the official ONE PIECE day. Here is my summary of editors’ Live-streaming event aired 2 hours ago
source:-
Oda loves joking before holding a meeting with his editor about chapters via phone.
For example, Oda said, “Hey, there’s a ghost behind you!” -
ONE PIECE Knowledge King Competition (1st Round) is announced.
Jump article about the competition says, “Get together, fans around the world!” , so probably people outside Japan will be able to apply for the event. -
Matt Owens is responsible for the script of OP Live-action TV drama. According to editors, he is as knowledgeable as Greg regarding OP.
In a meeting, Matt talked about a character in detail that even editors couldn’t recall enough. -
Editor Naito loves Carrot. When he started wondering what kind of child would be born if he married Carrot, another editor stopped him from talking further…
Naito insists those kinds of diversity should be accepted with this modern world.:ninja: -
Editors are impressed at the detailed drawing of Zoro’s sword drawn by Boichi.
-
The cover page of Jump this week can be connected with next issue.
Editors said the cover page of next Jump is a bit “unexpected”. Maybe Kaido and 3 Calamities will be drawn…?

These editors sound just awful.
-
Isn't Carrot 15 years old? Holy shit, what a creep. . .
-
I dislike the "as knowledgeable as Greg" part, sounds unlikely and marketing driven.

I enjoyed the show too. Especially the German intro I still like to sing at karaoke.

So you can apply for the One Piece knowledge competition, but will it be multilingual for the sake of anyone who does? I'm no Greg, but I think I'd have a fair shot and a good time in a One Piece trivia thing.
I'm cautiously optimistic for Matt Owens. Luke Cage season 1 was a solid piece of work and none of the others he's known for were at all bad. A live action One Piece isn't likely to live up to the manga, but tv as a medium is leaning hard into the epic fantasy thing after Game of Thrones, which gives me hope they'll respect the underlying worldbuilding. Trying to match manga visuals 1:1 with live action would be a mistake, but the heart and soul of One Piece is ultimately the world. Fingers crossed Owens is actually as passionate as they're making him out to be.
Wow! If Editor Naito never speaks about his personal interests ever again I'll _still_ know too much about him!
-
-
That too. They should have said like one of the OP mania.
-
Looks like the next cover will complete Luffy's face and the rest of the crew or so I think.
-
Doubt Owens is as knowledgeable as Greg, but I am very excited about his involvement in the Live Action show.
Agents of SHIELDS is a show he's written many episodes for, specifically in the last few seasons. That show has generally only gotten better as it's continued and Owens was more involved, so this does give me higher hopes for the OP series.
-
A typical foreigner-foreigner comparison.
I don't think this has anything to do with Greg being a foreigner. Greg has displayed his knowledge of One Piece on HokoTate and he now is the official One Piece theorist/columnist.
-
If hes half of greg thats still great
-
I'd be glad with half of any non-power-wanker member of this forum. My conceit is one and one only, less marvel more jump.
-
I just can't see it working. They'd have to re-imagine and re-write a lot of shit to the point where it's almost unrecognizable from the source material in order to get anything remotely close to a decent result.
Tone.
Character personalities.
Character design.
etc…The action and battles are probably going to be the easiest thing to pull off.
