Animation-wise it was an interesting experiment, and the first five minutes are great, but then the rest of the movie is just a really bland cookie-cutter plot.

Dinosaur was fantastic in the first five minutes, which notably, is the part they aired in its entirety for early previews.
And then in the actual movie they started talking at that point and it completely fell apart and became super generic and dumb. If they'd had the daring of Wall-E and just left it silent, it could have been amazing.
Also, they pretended it was all CG, in which case it would have been a beyond astounding achievement for the time in terms of photo-realism, but a lot of it was just actual photography and video. Modern CG movies just about actually hit that level though.
Similarly, years later, we have Walking With Dinosaurs. Which as a tv show, and overseas, is treated as a documentary series with a narrator. But when it got a big screen release… they dubbed in really bad comedians making poop jokes and completely ruined it.
-
That was a good time to be a kid for sure.
It certainly was. That's how Disney got its grip on my soul.

That roughly applies to The Good Dinosaur as well.
-
Guess Don Bluth is still the reigning champ on animated dinosaur movies.
-
I'm honestly surprised they didn't release a new one for the 30th anniversary last year but, then, there's only been one film released in that series in the past decade.
-
Wow, crazy good Robin Williams impression. Way better than Dan Castellaneta.

Yowza, that guy is good.
In further Aladdin news, Disney and Vevo seem to have officially put the entire remake soudtrack on YT. Here are the highlights:

!There's a new song for Jasmine called Speechless:

Why do I hear DJ Khaled and Snoopý Dog?
-
One Jump Ahead…...I don't hate it persay but it is awkwardly sung.
-
Reviews are coming in and…yeah, it's about what you'd expect.
-
^
Even a fair amount of the "fresh" reviews seem a bit "meh" about the movie which is kinda funny; generally going "yeaaaaah…we know the cartoon is better but it was...Okay? shrug" -
Judging from the first round of reviews it's a "love it or hate it" film.
-
My impression is from the clip and trailers only …
It feels small. The scenery feels small. The scene where Aladdin rides an elephant feels small. I am big fan of large landscapes. Large palaces, enormous courtyards. But would likely require the use of CGI backgrounds though, so, dunno.
I want a new Prince of Persia, all alone in a large castle complex. Darker, grittier.
I like the Arabian Night version a lot. Just an overall great melody.
-
Saw the movie, it was decent, but damn can that girl sing….
-
If nothing else it seems like people are liking her.
And a rap version of Friend Like Me for the credits:
!
What's sad is I kinda like this. No, it would have been blasphemy to use it in place of the actual song, but for end credits? Sure, why not?

Genie worked like 80% of the time for me, much more than I thought. Times he didn’twere Sometimes when he tried to capture Robin William’s energy and didn’t (but sometimes he got it) or certain hip hop spins on songs.
I like Nasim Perdad (new character that’s a handmaiden to the princess) and her comedy scenes worked, but her other side story I didn’t buy.
I bought the chemistry between the leads, and yeah Naomi Scott can sing. Her voice is great.
She has a song though that literally halts the movie that feels out of place. Good song and message and her character arc is good, but the song and resolution could be more tightly written.
Have a bunch of minor nitpicks here and there, but the biggest disconnect was Jafar lacking a presence, with a bunch of his iconic moments not in the film, and Iago not having a presence. Rewatching the animated version, didn’t realize how much of a presence Iago has in the Animated story.
It’s cute though. The extra scenes that stood out to me where Bollywood like with extended dance numbers which felt kinda out of place too, but they seemed harmless enough.
-

Well he is voiced by Gilbert Gotfried who sticks out like a sore thumb in any role major or minor.

They had me with that gorgeous first 10 seconds setup and then they hit modern day and lost me.
-
Come to think of it, hasn't Monsters Inc. already done the strange-creatures-living-in-modern-world thing? I mean, that movie worked because it explored the ideas of how a world like that might work and led to some creative visuals. But this movie just seems more like it's "Hey! Mythical creatures, but they're in suburbia! Funny, right?"
Well, I guess we'll just have to wait till more details come out.
-
Yup. Those are lions all right.
So full of personality and expression.
Or as someone on another site put it
[hide]Wow, look at the characters expressions in this incredibly gripping scene. Simba has just lost his father, is wracked with guilt, and Scar comes in for the kill. [/hide]

It's Dinosaur all over again.
I feel like this would be really fun as a short, not as a movie.

Lmao. Oh wow. Yeah I don't know why anyone thought a hyper realistic version of the Lion King would be worth making. Or was a good idea.
-
Pumbaa is freaking terrifying.
Also, its not even like its impossible to get realistic looking versions to emote, because you absolutely can as long as you cartoon them up even a tiny bit, have the eyebrows move a little more, have the ears be expressigive a bit more motion to the jaw. There'sbeen plenty of animated characters,2D and CG, that emote just fine. Having realistic fur and eyes shouldn't be a 100% obstacle to that.
Instead the emotion looks EXACTLY the same in every single shot.
EDIT:Oh wow I'm glad that posted at full size. Not going to tag that, it needs to be seen as is. There's gonna be people seeing THAT on IMAX.

This post is deleted!

Seth Rogan as Pumba would be funny but . . . not like that.
-
BTW, FYI, etc.
-
Yup. That lack of expression is why I believe "live-action" Lion King is the only disney that doesn't make sense. Even Jungle book has Mowgli. I can see how real people can give a different than an animated movie but real animals don't have enough expression we humans register to make an engaging movie.
-
Saw Aladdin today and I'm a huge fan! Will Smith Genie was a success for me, and while he wasn't perfect a la Robin Williams, he more than justified his inclusion. Jasmine is twice the character she was in the original and I thought Speechless was great, even if I was disappointed that it didn't keep any of the musical motifs from the rest of the film. All of the actors were good, including Jafar. With the character we got, who was more compelling than the original for me, I think the performance and appearance of him made a lot more sense than the animated version. Yeah, the animated version is much scarier, but he didn't have any depth or accomplish anything beyond being evil. The only complaint I have is that One Jump was pretty cringy for being too close to the original. Some comedy gags only work animated. Prince Ali wasn't as good as the original, but still really good and compelling, while Friend Like Me, missing the Robin Williams voices, was somehow just as engaging. I definitely got my money's worth and would watch it again. I Much better than any of the other Disney live action Remakes.

Errmmm it might rabbit it might.

Stranger and stranger. Although Disney wisely doesn't show too much to keep the surprises, I'm still not sure I'll enjoy this.
I don't know if we have completely split from the classic Snow Queen, or if they'll use the parts they didn't use in the first (the old lady, the bandit girl, etc.).
-
If this movie goes into exploring the origin of Elsa's powers, then I actually would be pretty cool with that since I think that's something that really needed more explanation in the first movie.
-
At 1:29 is she walking into the set of BRAVE? Wreck it Ralph was just the test, Princess Avengers here we come!
Frozen II is such a dull name though compared to Frozen : Subtitle.
@Satsuki:I don't know if we have completely split from the classic Snow Queen, or if they'll use the parts they didn't use in the first (the old lady, the bandit girl, etc.).
They weren't exactly close to the classic the first time around. Even by Disney standards. Going completely their own way makes sense.

Did anybody else think "Shadow of the Colossus" when the thing went stomping by?

Disney using that little of the original tale made me twitch a little in the first movie (the classic fairy tale nut that I am), so it seems a shame to not use anything they ignored. A bandit girl could easily be put into anything.
-

Which is fitting, since Frozen itself is a dull name.
-
I thought this deserves it's own thread like Star Vs. but anyway…

Apparently after The Princess and the Frog didn't do as well as hoped, Disney decided that "long princessy" names aren't going to get butts in the seats (specifically boys), so they now only use singular "cool" names like Tangled or Frozen.
I thought this deserves it's own thread like Star Vs. but anyway…
Oh my, now what is THIS?

i am surprised, confused and intrigued at the same time.

That had BETTER not be Chip and Dale. OH FUCK NO.
-
The Owl House looks very promising so far. I don't know what to say about the Chip and Dale thing, but it doesn't look good.
-
Oh, what fresh new Hell is this?
Looks kinda like those modern throwback Mickey mouse cartoons.
-
So I don't know how much this particular series has been discussed here but the first episode is up and it was pretty damn good. It's much more serious in tone than the previews made it seem.

-
Saw the Frozen II trailer in the theater. I typically don't set specific expectations for open sequels like these, but I'll be disappointed if we don't get a glorious villain song in this one.
-
Is this even Mulan at this point?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Take it a grain of salt, but if true I won't be surprised.
-
Better that the movie find its own direction than be a needless shot for shot remake. At least its going to be something NEW. Non Eddy Murphy Mushu might as well be a totally different critter…. since even Eddy Murphy himself in the role now would have weird Donkey from Shrek feelings at this point, and anything else would be weird ala Will Smith Genie not being Robin Williams Genie..
And as noted before, Mulan only had 4 songs, and only one of them was good, so taking the songs out of it isn't a big deal.
