Chapter 936: Sumo Inferno

Diez X Drake is in this chapter….I'm giving this chapter 10/10
-
Is it me or drake and vinsmokes have similar hair…
-
Sunkist to the rescue yet again.
Nobody can lay a finger on invisi-kist.
But Dino boy does seem to think he can take him
-
My boy Sanji always comes through!
-
I hope Benkei is a high-tier fighter at best.
-
I kept flip-floping on whether or not I liked this chapter, but now that I've read the official translations I think I'm leaning towards "like." The jokes landed better for me here.
-
-
The "Kapapa" of Kawamatsu gave me a whiplash flashback of CP9's Fukuro (Chapapa)
-
Post timeskip Sanji would've immediately died this chapter. Good thing he has grown from Fishmen island.
-
So Raizou probably has Kidd handcuffs keys, no way that it's not gonna have a payoff. And with so many people from North Blue seen Stealth Black, Germa might end being considered and Straw Hat allied country by the end of the Reverie.
-
Ugh, sorry I haven't done one of these in so many weeks. It's been a very crazy past month. But here are the comparisons for this week's chapter (not many this time):
- In both of the scanlations, Kawamatsu apologetically asks Raizo to break him out, while in the official translation, he says "First you must break me out of here, Raizo." Also, in the Jaimini's Box version, Kawa specifically states that the door is so rusty he's not sure if it'll open with the keys, whereas in Mangastream and VIZ, he says he's not sure if "they" will open since "they're" so rusted, presumably talking about both the door and the handcuffs.
- When the audience is cheering about the "death match" about to start, one speech bubble in MS (which seems to be from Luffy) just says "More!", while in JB and VIZ, it's Luffy commenting on how many men there are.
- When Kawamatsu is saying that Luffy better not let Hyogoro die, he says "I'm counting on you, Luffytaro" in both scanlations, but instead says "We need him, Luffytaro" in the official version, which has the added effect of making it clear that he already sees himself and Luffy as allies.
- JB has the comment that it's easy to search a bathhouse, while VIZ instead says that a bathhouse is a perfect place to hide. MS, as is often the case, is pretty vague, just saying that a bathhouse is perfect for "this".
- MS has Drake call Hawkins and their men idiots, while in JB and VIZ, he's calling Soba Mask the idiot that he needs to eliminate, and tells Hawkins and co. to handle the small stuff themselves. Also, in MS, the onlookers refer to Nami's naked body as "supermodel-level", while in JB and VIZ, it's a "national treasure".
- In MS, when referring to the capture of Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin, Sanji says that "They're trying to break out Traffy!", which sounds weird. JB and VIZ correctly have him state that "they" (as in, the bad guys who captured them) are trying to "lure out" Law. What he says after this is different in all three versions, too; he says "We've gotta stop them!" in MS, "We have to get to him first!" in JB, and "We need to get him under control" in VIZ (which makes it sound like Law is already running around rampaging about it).
- After Zoro says he knows Shusui was stolen, the other samurai says in MS "Then hand it over!", despite the fact that he already stole it. In JB and VIZ, he tells Zoro to go away instead.
-
I could never be a translator because there is a 0% chance I pass up the opportunity to make this joke.

I hope Benkei is a high-tier fighter at best.
So he will become Zoro's follower. I wonder if it is one of the characters we heard about or a new one. He doesn't look like any silhouhete. So probably the latter.
If he has 999 swords like the legend it's a good catch -
While I'm enjoying the current plot threads, I think the last few chapters have suffered from the Dressrosa era pacing problems I thought Oda had moved past. What I mean is it would probably have been better to do the bathhouse set piece in one dedicated chapter and the jailbreak in a dedicated chapter instead of doing two chapters with half of each. The pacing, in hindsight, isn't really that slow, but because each of the scenes we're cutting between only has time to take a single baby step, it feels a lot slower than it is. Volume readers are likely to have a better time with this part of the story.
The prison scene had some good laughs this week. Luffy's response to the cuffs coming off was perfect, and yes, I'm among the people assuming he'll just rubberneck his way out of the Battle Royal collar. Still no Kawamatsu reveal makes me sad, but at least Raizo is still fun to watch. Hyogoro's a good guy, asking to let Luffy fight alone. I like the old guy. Wonder if there's something special about him, or if Kawamatsu just thinks he should live because he's influential in the underworld.
The most interesting bit of trivia from the bathhouse this week is that the Koizuki tattoo is specifically a waning crescent. Over in the timeline thread, where the phases of the moon and their consistency were a topic of debate, there was some question as to whether the crescents Oda drew (they were all pointing the same way) were meant to be waxing or waning (since the phases are already too fast, so why couldn't they go the other way as well). A new, maximum power happiness punch was not a call back I was expecting, but I'll certainly take it. I'm not sold on the need for fanservice, but come on, I'm not made of stone. I enjoyed that Nami had the good sense to make fun of Sanji's outfit, and I'm curious to see where him being recognised as Germa goes. I wonder if the rest of the Vinsmoke clan are in the brig of the Queen Mama Chanter right now?
Not much worth saying about Zoro's little scene yet. Good to know we're finally building towards the lore that's been on the cards for the better part of a decade. Anyone think we'll get a retelling of Monsters with the Ryuma history, or will Oda let the original one-shot remain the canon version. The weapon collector has a fantastic character design.
We're about halfway through volume 93 now, which means its a good time for all this buildup to start turning into payoff. Looking forward to next week.

I will repost an interesting fact concerning Kawamatsu which was posted in several areas of the spoiler thread and which was resumed by badwolf1234
@badwolf1234:The clues still points to Otter Mink:
*Inuarashi's flashback when they arrived in Wano shows a shadow beside him with Kasa hat (chapter 920)
*We know one of the 9 Red Scabbards wears a kasa hat
*There is an Otter Yokai that spits fishbones wears a kasa hat and disguise as a human(Kawauso)
*The laugh of kawamatsu relates more to the sounds of an otter -
I thought Otters sounded like a crying puppy.

Am I crazy or do the Beast pirates not understand that someone with proficiency in Haki can use that to defend themselves against the blades in their decapitation collars? Taking off the seastone cuffs was bad enough but calling it worse having the neck chopper on is ludicrous if you can make your neck armored enough to resist, and let's face it, something that small can't possibly have a strong enough mechanism to propel the blades out strongly enough to break through a significantly solid substance (at least if you operate within the parameters of reasonable reality). If they mentioned something like 'even a Haki user can't block these babies!' or whatever, that would be one thing. I know that doesn't do Hyougoro any good but Luffy sure could, and if he had to, he could probably squeeze his rubber hands into Hyougoro's collar and Haki block those blades too, if not rip off the collar while he's at it. I know Big Mom's security staff was incompetent as well but this is really stretching the bounds of WTF.

We are talking about a crew where the captain just homerunned two goons because they told him to not understimate two rookies.

Would it be all right to ask for clarification? We haven't seen Kaido for a while so it can't be him if it 'just' happened so which captain are we referring to here? The pronoun game isn't working for me. But at least this explains how Kidd was able to escape so seemingly easily and Raizo managed to get this far without being caught until just now. Also why the frack haven't we seen any further glimpses of Caesar Clown? He's clearly in there with them, isn't he?

Didn't they parted ways with Caesar back in Totland?
-
Seemed powerful enough to break solid stone with ease. Could probably be presumed to be powerful enough to clip a new worlders head off based on how confident funky obelix is being about his creation.

While using Haki, Luffy was still cut/pierced by Hodi and Cracker. There is no way the PSI of that collar would beat a roided up White Shark Fishman or one of the strongest people in the world but that thing took out the stone pillar like it was nothing. Luffy may be able to resist it, maybe not, usage of armament does not mean one becomes impenetrable.
-

My bad, I meant Caribou.

I guess below a certain tier of user, but someone at Luffy's level? I wouldn't take that chance but that's just me.
-
I think Luffy is gonna pull a "Raiglegh" with the collars.
-
Have we ever seen an indication that Haki could resist something like this? It didn't seem to be an option for Sanji's exploding cuffs in WCI. Amazon Lily showed that Haki isn't completely impenetrable, even against non-Haki attacks.
-
Besides, the crux of the matter is not wether Luffy can tank the collar but how he gets through the match while keeping old man Hyo alive. If he pulls a Rayleigh good for him, but I think the other option where he has to fight while constantly protecting a weakened ally is more interesting. Either way I wouldn't pay much attention to the collar, in the end it will probably amount to as much as Sanji's bracelets in WCI

The thing is, every one of them is dumb as fuck. That's their schtick of being the violent horde of goons.

Like you guys wouldn't have a prison sumo tournament
-
I suppose Raizo has thekey to his friend in the cage. Wth his "but" I am now convinced he is missing some limbs like someone suggested.
It should not be to hard to link the recent return of Germa's stealth black to the recent discover of a new Vinsmoke that work with the strawhats. Also they saw Nami without costume.
The collar thing is pure stupidity. Luffy has proven to be able to fight the jailers with the cuffs. That's how he was escaping. Letting him get stronger when the point of the game is to slowly beat him until he is desperate enough to surrender is moronic.

Like you guys wouldn't have a prison sumo tournament
Only if it doubles as a Queen concert.
-
I think Oda realized that the villains Doffy-like recklessness is easier to justify if you establish from the start that the villain has a death wish.

I don't remember the chapter number, but the name was "Little Pirate Games". As Kaido was with some goons talking about Luffy, they said he shouldn't underestimate him, then Kaido said something like "Or what?" and sent two of them flying with his club.
-
Reminds me of Big Mom telling Kaido she would be over and he was doityouwon'timmakillyou then she arrived with her crew and he threw a fit until King arrived. Life on the edge indeed.
-
Really feel that people are overthinking the whole collar thing.
I know that doesn't do Hyougoro any good but Luffy sure could, and if he had to, he could probably squeeze his rubber hands into Hyougoro's collar and Haki block those blades too, if not rip off the collar while he's at it.
No, I would not say Luffy could "probably" do that, that's a pretty wild overestimation of his abilities.
I suppose Raizo has thekey to his friend in the cage. Wth his "but" I am now convinced he is missing some limbs like someone suggested.
Some have suggested that it's actually the keys for Kid. I would actually lean towards that, because with Kawamatsu, there's alternatives for freeing him. Whereas with Kid, he already escaped, so he pretty much needs the keys to his cuffs now.

Someone suggested it could Kidd's handcuffs key. That idea could be interesting
-
To me Queen's decision to remove Luffy's handscuff adds to his character. Most likely he knows the news about Luffy, but he seems to think: "Ey let's have a good tourney" and good means also a fair one. If you asume he's aware of Luffy strength, he simply has a huge confidence on himself and also doesn't want to take much advantage. It fits a healthy festive mood imo.
And Hawkings didn't see the national treasure coming… Such a powerful punch
-
Zoro fighting Whitebeard's actual son, lol.
-
Hey, so.. speaking of sumo matches. What happened to Urashima? Remember when he was introduced as a big deal and hyped up for a few chapters then disappeared forever? What was the purpose of that character? I mean he may show up again at some point but it's been a while. I feel like Oda has been doing that a lot lately and it's a sloppy crutch: Irrelevant, hyped up one-off characters just there to pad out the story or keep Luffy busy while the clock runs out on another plot thread. See also: Cracker.
-
So no one is talking about Sanji seeing bobs and vagine?
-
So no one is talking about Sanji seeing bobs and vagine?
It's something I try to ignore as best as I can.
Just have to accept that Oda finds it hysterically funny. Or maybe his editor pushes him into these nosebleed jokes, I don't know.
Like someone in the Spoiler section said, it feels like there are two different authors. One comes up with the original and funny gags, like the crab smile user who got outmaneuvered because he can only walk sideways, and then there is someone who insists to play the exact same pervert joke we've seen 50 times already.
-
Never been keen on the "mink traitor" theory, for me it looks like they somehow made a vivre card from Zunisha or have a vivre card of someone there that they got their hands on somehow and use it to locate Zou.
But if it turned out that there is an actual mink traitor, depending on the timeline of Hawkins joining the beast pirates, his crew member Faust(that black cat mink) does seem like a good candidate.

Faust hails from North Blue though. Also I don't see how he'd know specifically that Raizou was there.

I feel focusing on Urashima misses the point of the first sumo match. The point was not that you would expect this new character as a big deal, the point was to introduce sumo as a concept so it could be iterated on with the inferno version, and presumably one more later version towards the end of the arc because narratives love the rule of threes. Urashima exists because if Wano has sumo as a popular sport, it stands to reason they'd have popular and champion athletes to go with that sport. If we were just told sumo was a popular sport, we could assume those characters exist, but it's just a part of Oda's worldbuilding that we don't have to assume that; we get shown it.
It's the same principal as a lot of the minor pirate crews we see not really needing to be a crew, just a captain and a mob of namless mooks, to advance the story, but Oda can't help giving basically every captain at least one named lieutenant to play off of. Just something that's meant to make the world feel populated and lived in.

Do you think the act II will end with the prison break ?
-
Do you think the act II will end with the prison break ?
I very much doubt it. I don't see it taking much longer, and we're also not even yet at Komurasaki's funeral either.
-
Do you think the act II will end with the prison break ?
I think a little after. Act One gave us a relatively self-contained story in Luffy and Zoro helping out Okobore town and beating Holdem, then ended on the big developments of the Kaido reveal and Luffy's defeat. At the minute we have two plot threads that are starting to feel relatively complete, i.e. the prison break and the palace infiltration/bathhouse follow up. But we still need the big development to follow those up and make for an actual finale. If I had to guess it'll have something to do with either Big Mom or the lore surrounding Ryuma and his sword.
Cut back to Komurasaki's funeral after the intermission as a cold open to Act Three. That's my prediction.
