And i think we'll have a candidate for shortest chapter thread in AP history.

Yeah, I know. I was weak enough to read the spoilers, but I still managed to avoid the scanslations and discussion this time.
Anyway, lots of tiny information, but none of it was particularly standout aside from Orochi's introduction. Although I thought Yasu and Franky were pretty funny.
I'm surprised Hawkins isn't one of the Tobi Roppo. I'd assumed all of the Worst Gen would be the strongest members of Kaidou's crew besides the All-Stars/Calamities.
Tobi Roppo? What's with Viz and the gratuitous Japanese this arc?

That filthy Paramecia?
It's Zoan or gtfo in the Beast Pirates! Kaido knows what's good.
Soon.

What did the scans call them? Checks Jaimini "Flying Six" huh?

Tobi is a good boy.
One thing that this translation does clear up, is that the battleship for Orochi was the payment CP0 made just to see him this one time. They won't be seeing him again without a fight unless they bring Vegapunk.

So they haven't actually bought anything from him yet huh.
The trickle down crumbs we Euro peasants get are ever so juicy.

I like it, because it'd be a little underwhelming if half of the Flying Fighters were composed of Supernova that could betray Kaido at any given moment. And the more strong opponents we have, the better.
That said, it may not necessarily be a statement on Hawkins' strength. He and Apoo joined very recently as opposed to Drake after all, so that could partially be the reason why they're not a part of the group.

Oh, I wasn't complaining. I was just surprised. That part about him and Apoo joined recently is a good point too.
Oda just revealed Fifth Gear.
!
I don't know why we didn't see it coming before. Fifth Gear is going to be Luffy willingly utilizing fire (a la Ace/Sanji/Doflamingo/Katakuri).
It's likely unlocked through passion or the power of your heart (as Oda mentioned in an SBS when a reader asked why Sanji could light himself ablaze). This means that Sanji was the first Straw Hat to unlock it (when he had to protect the people he cared about most–Nami and Robin) and Luffy unlocked it after he failed to protect Ace. Other characters have also used this in the series. Doflamingo uses Overheat and Katakuri uses Burning Mochi.
Well done, Oda.
EDIT: The Fire Festival is the perfect place for this to be unveiled. Combined with Ace’s history on Wano (how does he tie to the card theme—was he affiliated with Kaido at one point?) I’m sure we’re in for an amazing arc.
Oh, I wasn't complaining. I was just surprised. That part about him and Apoo joined recently is a good point too.
Yea I know you weren't, just giving my thoughts. It's even more refreshing since people were getting antsy regarding how strong Kaido's crew is lol
With this new change in policy, and the fact that the VIZ chapters can now be read online for free without a subscription (at least in some regions; I'm not sure whether or not it's available everywhere), I want to hear what you guys think: for those who've been reading my chapter comparisons for the past few years, do you think those are still necessary/do you still want them? I'm happy to keep doing them if y'allz think they'll still be helpful and will enjoy reading them, but if you think that being able to now read the VIZ versions directly yourselves renders the comparisons moot, then it may be redundant for me to bother with it, haha.
The Kanjuro page made me laugh he's a very enjoyable charachter and would love to see him fight but man is he great comic relief.
Orochi's design doesn't sit well with me it's just extremely generic and lackluster for someone we've been waiting this long to see.
Probably this first time I've ever just really not liked a One Piece charachter design.
There are so many big names on Wano right now that it's kind of feeling a bit diced up and lame how we have eveyone serperated on nice little sections I want the fire festival ..I want chaos!

Funny!
My VPN wasn't working earlier for whatever reason, and I actually thought to myself "come on, I don't want to waste time setting up this crap AGAIN … maybe Bellisario shows up soon anyway..."
I still fixed it for pride reasons, but I don't think your efforts are worthless now. At the very least it may be helpful for future discussions, when you hear people basing their theories on certain (mis)translations.
Ultimately up to you though, I don't know how much time you have to invest.

While I enjoyed and appreciated them, I just reread the Viz on official release to get the authentic trans, especially for the important plot panels.
I'm sure others might still find it useful (for the lazy), so really depends on how much work you put into it.
On a side note, Viz does not translate "Tobi Roppo". I assume it translate to "flying fighters"? Is it standard for them not to have some type of editor's/translator's note for words like this?
I personally have no use for them anymore, but I'm guessing those outside the west still may. Thanks for all the comparisons the past 2, almost 3 years!
Why are there lines and how do we get rid of them?
!
Hmm, I didn‘t have those lines when I read it, but then again I used the app, so maybe it‘s only a browser version problem.
Yeah, it's a browser thing. Not sure why they designed it that way rather than having the bars fade out to give us a truer full screen

I still enjoy it, it's really cool to see them all next to each other to compare easier, plus not everyone has access to viz, I enjoy seeing it each week
I really like that Drake's fruit is an Allosaurus model. A T-Rex would've had 2 claws on its hands rather than the 3 that Drake had.
Shows that even if Oda intended for him to be a T-Rex before, he's learned or remembered that particular dino fun fact.
Or he planned for Drake to be an Allosaurus from the start, which would be even cooler.

That front page. Geezus, what's wrong with Nami and Robin's legs? It's like Rob Liefeld drew them.
(Obviously Oda started drawing them at the top o the page and wanted them to go all the way down but misproportioned… but yeeeesh.)

@Kaido:

They're literally in One Piece world's Japan. This is about the only time gratuitous Japanese is acceptable, because it actually fits the setting for a change.

A lot of us can't still access VIZ…
If it not is too much of a burden, I would be glad if you kept doing the comparisons!

I've really enjoyed reading them and I think I still would. It's one thing to be able to read every version easily, it's another to have the relevant lines put side by side. Plus, vitriol in other threads about Viz's new system/the new spoiler policy shows there are plenty of people region locked out Viz.
Why are there lines and how do we get rid of them?
Press control-0 to reset the zoom on your browser (or try control +/- to adjust the zoom). They appear because each of the images is composed of all those little squares as an anti-piracy measure against scraping. If you want to zoom, use the clickable +/- buttons instead.

If drake has allosaur them maybe the T rex is for queen. Each calamity has two strongest 6 healiners under them, queen has spinosaurus and allosaur and he is t rex? Jack is mammoth so he has 2 furries, maybe sabertooth tiger, king maybe is griffon and has some flight based zoans under him?

Tobi Roppo is a term from Kabuki theater meaning:
https://www.japanpitt.pitt.edu/glossary/roppo
Roppo
("movement in six directions"). A stylized mode of walking in kabuki theater. The walk characterizes strong, noble, or heroic characters and consists of exaggerated movements and a swaggering gate. In histories of kabuki, it is said that this movement is an exaggeration of the strutting (tanzen roppo) that young men would do in the pleasure quarters. There are several types of roppo, the most dramatic of which is tobi roppo, or the "flying walk." In tobi roppo, the actor springs and leaps across the stage while vigorously moving his arms and legs in all directions. (from Kabuki Glossary, 1996, Richard Hooker)

I can only thank him for it. ^^;
So, I just switched smartphones and logged into Google Play and it automatically recommended me to install the apps I had on my previous phone, including the latest version of the Shonen Jump app. No VPN, no apk shady file, nothing needed. Great. This new version is pretty damn great. I'm glad.
Regarding the chapter, not a very eventful one, but the point was to introduce Orochi and it did so with a bang. Although his design is really. really. really. underwhelming. It is probably one of the worst designs of an important character ever in OP. Although depending on how we're supposed to perceive him, it might just work out in the future. Is he actually strong on his own? His treatment of CP0 seems to indicate so. Although the fact that he resorted to a gun and threw the line "I have Kaido backing me up" goes in the opposite direction. His stupid belief in the "ghosts of the 9 scabbards" or whatever is also indicative of the fact that the guy is a moron, overall.
I'm also interested in the Kyoshiro yakuza guy. His gang keeps getting mentioned and involved with the Straw Hats but the boss himself keeps hanging around Orochi and not doing much. Can't wait to see what he's got in store, I wonder if his power can be a threat.
Good to see X back. Especially in his hybrid form. I've missed seeing Oda's hybrid Zoan designs! Overall nice chapter, it really shows we're in for a long ride in Wano, since we're still introducing important characters at this point.
@Kaido:
Tobi Roppo? What's with Viz and the gratuitous Japanese this arc?
it's a specific term coming from kabuki plays
As Akagami and Maju pointed out, Tobi Roppo (飛六_胞) in OP is probably based on Kabuki.
Tobi Roppo(飛六方) in Kabuki literally means "Flying Six Ways". Actually there is a ”Happo” (発泡_) Japanese liquor called “Flying Six”(とび六/飛六).
I guess Tobi Roppo might be based on both Kabuki and Japanese liquor. FYI, there is Japanese liquor called Kaido (海童). Kaido’s henchman Scotch might be based on Scotch whisky.
Oda loves Japanese liquor according to Viz interview in 2016.
[hide]
[/hide]The titles of Lead Performers (大看板) and Headliners (真打ち) are based on Rakugo, known as a form of Japanese verbal entertainment.
Oda loves Rakugo so much that he kept talking for a long time in an interview with Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli producer.
To sum it up, Wano arc is a combination of
[Japanese culture] Kabuki, Rakugo, Sumo, (Japanese) liquor etc
[Animals[ Beast Pirates, Mink Tribe
[Trump card games] Sheepshead, Gin Rummy etc
By the way, Straw Hats in Ninja outfits are drawn in the color spread. Ninja is one of the protagonists Oda wanted to draw before he started OP.
Before his debut, Oda wanted to draw pirates, ninjas or witch/wizards according to ONE PIECE Magazine 3.

Thanks for info. btw Orochi uses the term kurushūnai, I assume this is slang did Viz translate it correctly?
@td1:
Orochi uses the term kurushūnai, I assume this is slang did Viz translate it correctly?
The term Kurushuunai is an old-fashioned Jidaigeki variation of Kurushikunai (苦しくない), which means "I don' t feel uncomfortable". In other words, Orochi is satisfied with that exaggerated welcoming style. So I don't think JB's translation "Formalities won't be necessary" is accurate.
Orochi used exactly the same word kurushuunai in the page where Geishas are introduced.
In chapter 818, Momonosuke said Kurushuunai when Inuarashi tried to ask him something. Momonosuke replied in Viz translation, "I don't mind. There is no need to hide secrets from them!"

I would really appreciate if you could continue…
Tobbi Ropo makes more sense than Flying Six, because as far as I know, those Dinosaurs can't fly
Thank you for the valuable insights into Japanese language and culture, Sandman! They're really needed for this arc.
I'd like to ask your input on something, is Ebisu the official name for Okobore? So it was called Ebisu and then people started to call it Okobore when it got poor? I trust VIZ, but I remember that part was different in fan translations so it got me confused.
What is up with zoro and gambling? Did he gamble before, and is he known to be lucky? Some connection to Fujitora?
@Elektrik:

You'll eat your words when it's revealed that they all know Geppo
Why are people assuming that Orochi is a moron because he fears the Nine Scabbards? He is absolutely correct: they are here and they are after him.
He just doesn't know yet what they are, ghosts or something else.

First of all, thank you for doing this for so long. Obviously it's not like you gain something from the fandom for doing it, outside of just being a good poster on the forum. I loved that you did that because it was something I could point my friends that read scans to. To show them "Hey, usually a lot of shit is different. Read the better official".
If I were you personally, I wouldn't. Just because with the official being free and simultaneous, it may be redundant. That said, I'm sure your posting on every chapter has made more than a few people check out Viz.
So my non answer is, do what makes you happy!
Side Note: I love that scanlations that use "yonkou" and "shichibukai" are translating terms in this Japan focused arc are translating terms that Viz is leaving untranslated.
