Chapter 928: Introducing Komurasaki the Oiran
-
Kid is true man. Not surprising he lost his arm to Shank's crew since he was gunning for him.
I like Komurasaki. Takes quite a lot of balance to walk with those ridiculously tall okobo.
8/10 from me.
Right. I'm leaning towards her being Hiyori and has a connection to Tama.
-
Wooo, official release!
"Oh, btw, Kid has also run into all the emperors in the new world. It's not just Luffy doing the crazy" is a little forced.. but I guess the NW is entirely territory claimed by the emperors.
Not really thrilled with Caribou being there. I guess we saw him last chapter and all but bleh. ANd still no follow up on bonespitter.
Komurasaki… kind of a nasty one ain't she? But she's a pretty lady so Oda will probably redeem her post haste. Very much seems like Hancock 2.0. ANd those shoes! Oda's setup here seems to indicate that maybe she's Momo's sister?

As someone said in the other thread, at least the majority of it is stuff that's happened or we knew about ages ago. So it's really hard for me to see it as being forced when it's not like it's all coming out at once. And really the only exclusive thing Kid has done that several of the other Supernovas haven't is fighting against Shanks' crew beforehand. Which I actually like, as I wasn't expecting another layer regarding him wanting to take down Shanks. Of course it's not purely based on revenge, but is almost assuredly a part of why he's targeting him.
Oda's setup here seems to indicate that maybe she's Momo's sister?
I still feel like he's making it _way_ too obvious to fully buy into it just yet, so I'll wait for something more conclusive. In this arc alone, I'm already especially wary after the recent assumption of Luffy thinking Law was Shutenmaru that led people astray. If I go with the logic that Oda wants to give us a good reveal/twist concerning who Hiyori is, neither Tama (who we can safely disregard now) or Komurasaki would qualify IMO.
-
It was an okay chapter, but I hope we will get some spoilers for the new chapter before the year ends…
-
Great chapter!
I love how the "refresher" of Caribou is probably the worst summary of an old character. "He was a rookie pirate who tried to fight Luffy in the New World. It didn't work out". I'm assuming/hoping the anime -when it gets to this point- will do a Wapol-esque montage of his adventures in the cover stories.
Kidd has balls. Not two arms, but likely two big ass balls to go against 3 of the 4 Emperors at this point. I was scared reading at first because I thought the conversation about "he went against Big Mom and had his arms ripped off" wasn't still in context to Kidd. I thought "oh shit, did Jimbei get dismembered?".
But Kidd has been on a roll since he's been back in the story. I'm wondering which of Big Mom's generals he fought against.
The Komurasaki and old man story was a nice way to portray, once again, this anguish and corruption in this country. Normally I don't like these detours from the Strawhats, but this was played up very well.
Tama is definitely not Hiyori. My fear IS that the Komurasaki is going to be her though. I do think it is possible that Hiyori being brought up right at the end of this chapter COULD be a misdirect. If it is her, is this an act she's putting up? Is it that she's fine with screwing over the people of Wano for the bigger goal of removing Orochi and Kaido? Is she actually just jaded and became a bad person to be redeemed later?
Now time for the yearly holiday slump of breaks. And right after a great chapter for the first official free weekly release!
-
I also enjoyed Komurasaki's introduction. I know Oda will redeem her, I just hope she has a yakuza/delinquent attitude by the end of it.
-
Finally!
How do you get rid of the grid lines though?
-
Chapter 925 would be perfect between 2 breaks, not random old evil fodder flashback. Like you can't see the reverie, kid vs big mom pirates and red hair pirates, but random fodder flashback? on panel!
-
Umm how do you change the page the link is just stuck on franky image for me.
edit: nvm it's back to front

The wording was kind of weird since brulee herself said that he was defeated by one of the sweet generals but the rumors almost make it sound like he challenged big mom directly.
Unless by Big Mom, Stephen meant the entire group as a whole.
-
I enjoyed this chapter very much.
Komurasaki's introduction reminded me of old school One Piece, taking its time, presenting someone that is over the top in its main characteristic, but that holds a strong presence and a clear concept that lead to good stories. Nice!
By the way, Komurasaki is obviously Hiyori and she will play an important role in this arc, so I hope Oda makes it special. I can't wait to see her interactions with Robin.
-
Now that the chapter is finally out i can officially be amazed that Shanks dismembers people.
Makes you wonder what he would've done to Hiruma if he hadn't been eaten

I'm sure it will come up with Stephen in the manga recap of the next podcast.

I would have loved the chapter even more if more panels were spent to Kid rather than the old scammed guy.

They were there more for Komurasaki's character than anything else.
-
It is a little weird how divorced the samurai stuff feels from the Kaido stuff. At times it feels like they are just two unrelated stories stapled together. I mean i know i've been grumbling about the Japanland stuff but right now i feel like it would be beneficial if he could just pick a lane and stick with it. And the samurai story atleast seems to have some guiding force to it, topple the usurper, relatives of the old king out for revenge and all that stuff. Or it could just be that i don't much care for Kidd with only one d.
-
Two things stand out right away about Komurasaki:
1, she's obviously Momo's sister. So se probably won't be.
2, she's obviously a bitch. But she's hot, so she'll surely be redeemed via sad backstory

In one chapter I'm already more invested in Komuraski as a character than the dozens we got fleshing out Shirahoshi and Rebecca. I agree she's going to be "redeemed" in the end but I hope she doesn't lose this bite, I love that she's weaponized the only thing she has left in a country that appears to have robbed her of everything else.
The issue with so many of the other princesses since Vivi has been a generic story arc: they start in this disadvantaged state and Luffy helps them overcome whatever obstacles in their way. Vivi (and Komuraski so far) were shown to be empowered right off the bat. We're obviously not supposed to like Komuraski right now, but we're invested because she's already a strong character.
One negative takeaway though: I don't think the last bit with Momo was necessary unless Komuraski is going to be a red herring which Oda (thankfully) usually steers clear of. A bit too much handholding with the readers for my taste.

Now that the chapter is finally out i can officially be amazed that Shanks dismembers people.
Why? Because he and his crew got weak and don't headshot anyone anymore and yet became Yonkos?
Edit: Also
Sorry, this website is not available in your country.
Welp, I guess pirating rules.

Reminder that Lucky Roo killed a guy in the first chapter

Meh, I could easily see him getting stuck on something during his fight with them, and the only way of saving his life was cutting off his arm.
Maybe there's just no reason to hide Hiyori's identity at all, and that's why we got it all so obviously portayed, Tama in the other hand, might actuallly be related to Komurasaki in some way, but she's not a random civilian to me.
P.D. Maybe stick a VPN along with the official release, so lots of people don't get trolled with; Sorry your third-World country doesn't get to read One Piece. Message

Clearly he did it for fun. A party trick.
That's why Hawkeye doesn't want to party with him anymore.
Shit gets crazy at a Shanks party.
Sorry your third-World country doesn't get to read One Piece.
Story of my life. It's weird to think that like 10 years ago the world was at your fingertips. Anything you could think of could be found through torrents or what not. And now you have to be forced back into a box where you have to wait 6 months to receive content the US had since like early summer. Talk about regression. Like when you heard oh they are going to add streaming services and subscription services like this it sounded sweet, like fuck yeah i'd get a hulu or a viz or whatever, but nope it's US only US only US only and outside you can scurry around looking for scraps. Forget flying cars and sci-fi i'm still waiting for the obsolete region locking system to go the fuck away already.

Consolidated opinion of the chapter:
-
This forced rivalry between Luffy and Kid that Oda took out of absolutely nowhere is simply not working for me. Sorry, bye.
-
The more I reread the chapter, the more I like Komurasaki. REALLY! I said in the spoiler thread I would like her to be a true villain if it turns out she really is Hiyori, but I take it back. After seeing the disproportionate hate she is getting in many places, I really hope we can revisit this chapter later under a different light and she makes everyone eat their words.
That said, I really hope once we find the truth about her and is revealed she is one of the good guys, she remains this cold badass manipulative bitch instead of turning prim and proper. -
Oh, and I hope she and Kyoshiro have some sort of romance/partnership/friendship going on instead of him just being a VIP client. Both of them and Toko are the characters that instantly caught my interest in Wano, so it would be good to have them all being connected. Just add the witching-hour boy in the group and I will be 100% happy
-
Long John Silvers Rayleigh suggested on the spoiler thread Komurasaki/Hiyori could be Tama's mother. It would fit the purple color theme and Hiyori would be 18 when she became a mother (so an ok age to show pregnancy in the manga). But most importantly, if Tama can't be Hiyori herself, being Hiyori's successor would justify she sharing the Momotaro theme with Momonosuke, something I am struggling to get.

Yep the whole Kidd have serious beef just annoys me in how scattershot it feels. It was already annoying when the whole I attack Big Mom wasn't a precursor to his future target but at least you could say t was just minor skirmishes. But this clearly establish KIdd has having major beef with each emperor. He straight up fougt Big Mom Lieutenant, lost body parts to Shanks and is now a prisoner of Kaido. I want focus not "I definitely have valid reason to have a major confrontation with all yonko's that feels they should get follow up". But Kidd has always been the weirdest supernova to me. Lots of hype an unearned reputation.
I was in the side of the old man until they sold their family. If you are selling your family I have big trouble having sympathy for you. Also I join my voice to the others that believe the courtisan is Hiyori. I just continue to find the image weird of Little sister Hister Hiyori having a tearful reunion with her kid brother. Boggles my mind.
-
Old Man Hyou has the same haircut that Ace Devil Fruit. I'm sure he knew him a long time ago.
-
But it's not a new rivalry?
Just about their first interaction was when Kid, Luffy, & Law first "competed" to one-up each other outside the Auction House at Sabaody.
When Kid tried to offer to clean up the marine forces for the others, each of them, offended, told the others that they'd be the one to take care of it, in ch.504.
And when Luffy proclaimed he'd be the man to find One Piece shortly after they wiped out the marines, Law & Kid both reacted to it.It's been some time since we've spent any time with Kid, but these three pirate captains definitely see each other as rivals. Kid & Luffy boasting at each other is plenty in keeping with how they've behaved before, and will probably continue to play out in One Piece's long game—temporary alliances aside.

Luffy passed his bounty his first week in the NW. And now he is the fifth emperor and has 3 times the bounty. I think Oda dropped the pretense.

I expect that we will see that the reason her upper face is hidden is because she is crying when manipulating those people.

Nice of Kid giving Shanks a new arm.
-
I know I'm the minority here but I'm really hoping that the straw hats get there own 1 vs 1 fights like in Albasta/Enies Lobby

I still like Law more as rival then Kid. Since they are both Ds and that will be way more important for the main story then both having CoCs. And there is also the thing that Law doesn't wannabe the new shanks.

I second this sentiment. This face to face rivalry seems a bit unnatural, of course I like Kid's go getter attitude and Shanks crew still being badasses. I actually enjoyed the Raizo and Hyou bit a little more than Kid stuff. Just me though.

Komurasaki may be the woman Oda was talking about in “26th Log” book published in November, 2017.
He said, “I should make a beautiful woman appear in there in the future.!!”
Oda also said he loved strong-willed woman. Here is my full translation last year.@sandman:
Question: What characters were hard to make their designs?
Oda: Hancock and Shirahoshi. It really bothers me to make designs of beautiful women since the amount of female faces I like are limited considering the long serialization of ONE PIECE.
I can make designs of male characters as many as I want. I can draw various female characters' faces such as Amazon Lily women,
but things are different when it comes to "beautiful woman".I hyped up my audience that Hancock is incredibly beautiful although I didn't specify her detailed designs before she appeared.
It means I had to convince my audience of Hancock's beauty once she actually appeared in manga.
I managed to find a solution about what kind of face the most beautiful woman in the world would have.
I was relieved to see Hancock became a popular character. However, I hyped up my audience again thoughtlessly that Mermaid Princess is as beautiful as Hancock!!
One more female character as beautiful as Hancock..!? Actually, I'm kind of a person who can expect my potential in the future.
Then, I produced a beautiful character named Shirahoshi. She was the first woman during my more-than-10-years-serialization whose eyebrow was downward-sloping!!
(the eyebrows which make her look like as if in trouble)
I hadn't drawn a woman like Shirahoshi since I love strong-willed women, but I enjoyed the drawing process of Shirahoshi, thinking, "She looks nice than expected."Now then, I should make a beautiful woman appear in "there" in the future…!!

That would be the best case scenario, not every one the person needs to have a morality so well defined in black-n-white. This is a manga about pirates after all.

Agree with both, that would fit very well.

Fun things happening @ Viz, but like most of the time quite a few countries are left out. Have fun with those new possibilities, guys. Collini…out.

I recall people speculating last week that Caribou had already had a hand taken for stepping out of line, just on the basis that his hands were out of the frame. But here we still can't actually see them. Thinking on it, have we ever actually seen Caribou's hands? They're always in his sleeves, even when he's, say, operating a gun. It's like the mystery of Doflamingo's eyes, except nobody cares.
I'm glad Komurasaki's reception here is a bit softer than over on Reddit. No one here's spamming the word thot like it came up on their Word of the Day Calendar. The old dude sold his family; he's not the hero of this story, no matter how shitty Komu's attitude towards the poor is. Of all the Hiyori candidates, I'd say she has the best odds, but it'd be a mistake to call it confirmed so soon. Pretty decent chapter overall, even if it's a little flat to be the last one of the year.

Nobody comes out looking good from that interaction. She's a shitty enabler who'd gladly profit from the misery of others and he's the type of man who'd throw away the lives of his family for some pussy. The only difference being that everyone agrees that the old man is shit, but some want to downplay the shittiness of her.

That's because we know Oda, so we can tell it is very unlikely this chapter can be taken at face value. It is safe to assume the old guy will not be redeemed later as he probably was meant just as a plot device to introduce Komurasaki, but we are definitely going to see her a lot more and, based on what we know of this manga, it's very unlikely there won't be a twist.

Oh yea. I wouldn't call it out of nowhere, but it is certainly underdeveloped and presented in a generic manner. It's like Oda's heart is not on it.
But it's not a new rivalry?
Just about their first interaction was when Kid, Luffy, & Law first "competed" to one-up each other outside the Auction House at Sabaody.

Yes, you are right that the rivalry was established back in Sabaody, but I think the dynamic of their relationship was not in the same wavelength as it is right now. Of course, it is understandable how their attitude got to this point ever since Luffy came to the prison, but the fact that Oda offscreened their initial interactions (and hasn't written anything special yet) is a problem that justifies that it feels out of place.

What does this even mean? The Supernovas are rivals and since their introduction, Oda has been treating Luffy, Kid, and Law as special in that, even more specifically bringing up differences between Luffy and Kid. I'm legitimately interested in how you think it's out of nowhere?
edit: Wanted to point out that I think Komurasaki's design is pretty great and probably Oda's best beautiful woman besides Nami and Robin. She looks distinctive enough that I can't imagine ever getting her mixed up with others.

Well Fuhranky for instance got to be exactly as much of a dick as he appeared to have been to Usoppu. He and his gang beat and robbed people so he could use the stolen cash to build a boat. Even if he's one of the Strawhats now he did what he did and some dick moves can't be undicked. Old dudes family ain't gonna be any less sold into slavery cause she joins the home team y'know. But yes most likely she'll be Hancocked soon enough
