Emilia Clarke is lucky she landed the role of Daenarys, for which her acting fits. Outside of that every movie she has been in she is boring and one note as hell. She is not a good actress overall. Great personality irl from the interviews I have seen, but super one note actress.

Saw Solo and that was fun.
It had problems, definitely not top tier Star Wars, but it was good and I enjoyed it.
Despite loving Rogue One, I kinda feel this lives up to the promise of the "A Star Wars Story" sub-series more than Rogue One did. The Empire is there obviously, they rule the galaxy, but they were not the actual antagonists of the movie nor did the actual Rebel Alliance show up at all either. This was just "A Story" that happened to take place in the Star Wars universe, but it didn't go towards or support the narrative of the Fall or the Republic or the Rebellion in any substantive way.
I thought Rogue One was good, but it definitely felt like Episode 3.5. Like, it naturally fits right before Episode 4 to the point that you can put them together and the opening scene of 4 will read as the just the next scene after the end of RO. This one is 100% its own thing and I really like that.
Anyway, I agree with the critical consensus. 7/10. Fun movie that isn't going to amaze anybody, but for what it is, is pretty good.

So Solo isn't exactly a bomb, but it definitely underachieved to the point of barely recouping production and advertisement costs, if at all. What do people make of this?
Personally, I think it's kind of the one of the best-case scenarios. By all accounts the movie isn't bad, just generally unimpressive and hamstrung by its predetermined protagonist character. It's not essential in the canon and it's still very watchable. Hopefully the box office disappointment is enough of a warning to Disney that they'll treat the franchise with more care.
-
A) Disney won't be able to put out 2 to 3 Star Wars movies a year like Marvel without some severely diminished returns. One a year in December is ideal, try to keep the "Episodes" as special events.
B) Rein in budgets and expectations on the Star Wars Story movies. They don't all have to be large scale blockbusters. And try to get a little more creative and freewheeling with the premises, timelines, etc. But standalone movies like Rogue One and Solo are still a good idea, just don't get ahead of yourselves.
-
The best way to sum up Solo: It was a movie that I watched.
I liked some things and disliked others. I laughed at some things and cringed at others. I don't feel like it was a waste of time, but I know there were more productive things for me to do.
After reflecting on it for a day, I would probably rank it as the best among the four Disney films so far (although that was a very low bar to clear).

Saw Solo tonight. It had issues, but it was enjoyable throughout and I had a lot of fun.
! To start off with my biggest surprise, Alden Ehrenreich did a phenomenal job as Han. He's no Ewan McGregor, but it didn't take long into the film for him to feel completely natural in the role, and even his appearance felt fitting. Lando and Beckett were strong co-stars, and the script was dynamic and appropriate for the film's setting while still retaining the appropriate amount of Star Wars ham and cheese. Also, the text at the beginning was very much appreciated, and the film's beginning felt so much smoother because of it.
! I never really put any thought into the Kessel Run before this, but if I had expectations for it I'm pretty sure this film would have met them. It was probably the highlight of the film for me, and the whole Maw scene was beautifully done.
! The film also had a tendency of making me think "Hmm, what happened to this element" and then bringing in that element soon afterwards. However, that also leads to my biggest criticism of the film, and that's the jarring shift towards the climax. I had wondered when Beckett's words about trusting no one were going to pay off, and sure enough they did in the climax, but in a way that completely turns a story that seemed to be about finding true companions in the lowest depths of society into one about watching your back and surviving at all costs. When thinking of other films, Solo reminds me the most of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Pirates also combines teamwork and treachery to drive its plot, but unlike Solo the betrayals actually fit organically within the story and don't suddenly yank the film to an entirely new focus. Solo's climax almost felt like a completely different movie because I could barely see traces of the first 3/4s of of the film that was almost entirely team driven.
! A big example of that would be the leader of the masked pirate band. I could find the revelation of her real identity easier to swallow if she had any real impact on the film prior to that point, when before she was nothing but a generic obstacle getting in Han's and Beckett's way. Her motivation comes entirely out of nowhere, just like a bunch of the other motivations that manifest in the climax. We only knew Han's, and didn't have a whole lot of reason to think that Beckett and the others had vastly different ones that wouldn't receive main character influence. I think it would have been very possible to show indications of each character's goals that would have given their true color displays much more buildup and weight. Beckett, Enfys, Vos, Qi'ra…Qi'ra leaves me quite unfulfilled. I do like the fact that she didn't pick the obvious route of turning good and going with Han (not that that would have worked with the rest of the story), but the problem was that the only goddamn buildup she got to becoming the new crime boss were vague statements about "things she did" and the mark on her arm. What did she did? Why she evil? Again, as I said earlier, it would have been very possible to show her committing actions that raise a few eyebrows and help serve as buildup to her turn.
! I love Darth Maul and his cameo really excited my inner fanboy...but what's next for him and Qi'ra? While Star Wars is always going to be this sprawing, multi-medium extended universe, it still feels rather cheap to leave important ends untied in a standalone movie. I think if Qi'ra's turn had been more organic, I might not have had as much of an issue, but since it was so sudden it feels so much more like a cliffhanger that'll get relegated to a comic or a TV show. And I have similar reservations about Maul, because I know that the guy meets his end in Star Wars Rebels. And not like a Phantom Menace Disney-death end, an actual, ends-tying, symbolic and peaceful death. So part of me is torn in excitement to see what could be next for him (and I am probably being completely delusional, but I even got a few Snoke vibes during his cameo), and unsureness about what role he could fill well with his (extremely likely) end already staked out.
! A more minor criticism I have is that the Kessel Run & Gun was so fast paced that it ended up feeling overwhelming. Like, I get that this depiction is true to how chaotic a fight for a gunslinger would be, in contrast to the Force bringing serenity, but still, a tad too much for me. Though to end things on a happier note, I quite enjoyed Lando and Han's "I hate you" "I know" exchange. Very subtle and clever. To me the film kinda felt like the opposite of Rogue One. Rogue One struggled to get on its feet at first but then rocketed into quite the climax, while Solo started off running but stumbled a bit towards the end. I don't think the Star Wars franchise would have been better off without Solo, and would definitely be inclined to watch it again, but there is still a lot of room for the franchise to grow.

I finally saw Solo last night, and I liked it. A couple of non spoiler complaints: A lot of the movie is filmed really dark. Lighting-wise. The beginning feels
a bit disjointed and takes a while for it to feel like it's found its footing. There were times when I felt like something was missing, but it's hard to put my finger on it. The second half got a lot better. I don't know what would make anyone upset, though, it's a very safe SW movie. -

The internet sucks sometimes (OK, a lot). Especially since there's no valid reason to hate Kelly herself.

That's really sad. Writing issues aside, I actually thought she was adorable. If you have problems with her role in the movie, take it up with the writers and directors, not her.

Their problem is she's female, and Asian (while not looking like an idol singer, these sorts would have been all over that).

That's true of most films in general these days; it annoys me how many films are deliberately made dingy looking and washed out in post.

The Star Wars fanbase has easily been one of the most toxic ones out there for decades now.

The movie sucked, but there's also no denying a huge contingent of the online naysayers are alt-right garbage people.

The main characters are mostly minorities, so yeah. They'll look for any flaws to jump on the films.

All my male friends basically said that. The first part sentence. Which made me really sad.

True, but Star Wars has never really done that, as far as I can recall.

The Story films have reportedly been shelved for the time being.
The Rian Johnson trilogy is apparently still on. Sadly. -
As far as I'm concerned, this is great news.
-
I actually wanted to see an Obi movie. Never cared about Solo though, nor about Boba Fett.
-
Obi Wan should have been the only movie done as fanservice, everything else, new characters and preferably time period like old republic for example.
-
I would've been down for a 12 Years a Wookie movie that ends with Chewie meeting Han.
-
-
Interesting take on the First Order. Seems like it points at the current moviemaking process as a problem. Like in trying to make Star Wars easily consumable/enjoyed by all, certain aspects have been watered down.
-
Yep, definitely a more overall hollywood problem.
-
So we're getting Siege of Mandalore properly.
-
Great to see the clone wars getting the chance to end on its own terms. Great series.

This is so awesome. Hopefully, if this does well for them, we get more of the unfinished stuff.
If not, I hope we at least get the Bounty Hunter arc here. Cad Bane is awesome.
And I'm really happy to see Obi-Wan and Anakin in their ROTS looks finally.

If Disney wants to just go ahead and pretend nothing has happened in Star Wars since 2014, that'd be perfectly fine by me.

We can keep Maul's death, right?

Why would we want to pretend the best Star Wars movie didn't happen?

I hope so too. The bounty hunter arc seemed the most interesting of the unfinished arcs to me.

@Cyan:

If we toss out all of Rebels, then that scene can be redone with Clone Wars assets.
Why would we want to pretend the best Star Wars movie didn't happen?
I liked Solo, sure, but it was hardly the best Star Wars film.

-
Why would we want to pretend the best Star Wars movie didn't happen?
I mean, nothing in that sentence made any sense.
And yes, all of disney wars so far is so irrelevant. Force awakens was a remake, last jedi had barely any plot and rogue one showed us shit we basically knew already.
Disney Wars sucks so far.
-
Rogue One took an entire film to do what the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars special did in one scene but still managed to do nowhere near as good of a job as that special.

The comics (at least the issues I've read) are good. Can't forget about Thrawn back in the canon. I'm looking forward to Thrawn Alliances.

I liked Thrawn Alliances.
General thoughts
! Enjoyed both time periods. Anakin/Thrawn (& Padme)'s story was a great mystery that linked nicely with Vader/Thrawn's story. Liked the other POVs we got. I hope to see more of Commadore Faro. And the First Legion commander surprisingly wasn't a huge jerk. Also liked the camaraderie between the First Legion.
! The tension between Thrawn and Vader was great. We finally meet someone else in the Empire besides Tarkin and the Emperor that Vader has to talk to and not just choke and walk away.Ending
! They did a good job setting up the Gysks (with some Chiss help) as a future problem). Most likely they'll be a post ROTJ problem. Vader force piloting the Star Destroyer was cool. Still want to know if Thrawn ordered that navigation guy to adjust his seat beforehand, ha. Vader in a tie defender was nice too. I thought Thrawn was gonna reveal he was force sensitive as a child.
! That anti-Jedi clone armor, baby. Be nice to see that but it won't happen now. Liked Padme's POV chapters a lot. She's so smart and capable. Sucks what happened to that planet at the end. Anakin screwed up big time. Oh, yeah, Thrawn! He was on top of things like always. Great seeing him tackle problems without dealing with Rebels plot armor.
! I guess we'll get another Thrawn book, but that'll have to take place after Rebels. I certainly won't mind a Thrawn/Ezra book. Doubt they'll do a TV show about them. -
Doctor Aphra.
Been reading her comic series. Why isn't Disney pushing her as the next big Star Wars character? Where's her movie or show? She's amazing. -

-
She could be the next big EU star, up there with Thrawn. I'd say with her comic, along with the Star Wars and Vader comics they could make something similar to Clone Wars set post ANH.
I get Disney wants to capitalize on nostalgia, but they also should build up new characters and lesser-known fan favorites. So much potential to be found there.

The third segment of this video (starting at about 15 minutes) is seriously perfect and is something I wish anyone who either is in the group that considers TLJ the worst thing ever or has interacted with someone from that group, would watch. (tl;dw: You're allowed to dislike it but certain very outspoken people have crossed a line into being 10000% toxic about it and that is very much not okay.) -
Yeah I know a few folks who genuinely disliked the movie but werent assholes about it and not for asshole reasons. I feel bad that they can get lumped in with the assholes who dislike it for asshole reasons.
