What makes Ichigo stand out
His appearance and overall attitude: being more "street" and punk than either Naruto or Luffy made him stand out as the more "mature" (and we are talking years ago). His darker powers and costumes helped give him that vibe.
Ichigo was even worse than a cardboard cutout.
Being only a few steps away from being Ebony Dark'ness.
I think Ichigo is just a much worse version of Yusuke, right down to the being multiple races and stuff. As dumb as Yusuke being half demon was in Yuyu Hakusho, Togashi pulled it off much better than all the races Ichigo ended up being.
Ichigo was fine starting off, at the very least. It's not an exact science, but a lot of shonen protags fall into the category of "dumb" or "punk".

I remember when I was first getting into the world of anime/manga that were available online,
and Bleach was one of my first anime that I watched without reading the manga first.
At first, I really loved the "Ghostbusters meets swordplay" concept, and Ichigo did strike me as a cool guy with his "Um, no. Fuck ya'll" approach to the protagonist prompter (Rukia) when she first showed up.
I liked that he wanted to do his own thing. But of course, as soon as people were in danger his MC instincts kicked in and the ball started rolling.
In fact, from the beginning arc to the end of Soul Society, I thought Bleach was a bloody great watch.
A lot of the humor landed with me, I dug Ichigo's punk attitude (My parents are punks/rockers themselves, so maybe there's some bias in there),
I thought the fights were great for the most part, I thought the soundtrack was the bomb, and I loved the variety of character designs.
I got really invested in the Soul Society arc and followed it intensely as I watched through the episodes.
But then I got very bored during the Bount Arc and dropped the show lol
It was only much later that I discovered it was a filler, at which point I caught up to the manga.
Which… yeah... It's pretty obvious that Bleach would have been a much better story if it was kept short and sweet, ending after Soul Society.
I'm not a terrible person because I warned my roommate to drop Bleach after soul society
I'm not a great person because I roped him into hunter x hunter instead and have condemned him into the long wait for Hunter x Hunter (2032 anime)

I'm fairly certain that Soma and Erina were chit chatting in that last chapter on the night of the first day followed immediately by her sudden abduction, so I don't believe the chapter went back in time.

They then get handsomely rewarded for taking down the leader of evil chefs.
The best would be that soma didn't do it for justice, Erina, his father pride or public safety, but because in prission he can't say no to his shokugeki challenges, and he'll love the oportunity to not eat the gourmet prission food.

Here's an idea… why not make Souma distraught that Erina seems to have disappeared, to fuel the B plot of her being kidnapped and the developing romance?
You can then have that affect his ability to cook fast and effectively, his reputation with the elite ten is damaged, and because of his worrying for Erina the group only barely passes by a smidgen! You then have Souma actually going through a story arc, ending this part at the lowest he's been in a while.
He then gets to have his redemption arc by saving Erina and defeating his brother, and happy ever after. End of.
But noooooo 800 servings every hour for 8 hours and everyone's seemingly forgotten about Erina even existing.
Someone took a page out of Bleach and Naruto with absurd numbers.
Oh well, with this glimpse into the good ol' days done with back into the annoying plots.

The appeal of the series before it went to shit was the grounding of cooking and restauranteering concepts. Yes the characters and the aesthetic of the cooking are over the top but all the dishes made sense and could be replicated and a lot of thought was put into not just making the food good but how to suit the needs of the customers or how to run your business efficiently and successfully. Soma did a lot of great arcs in the past where Soma had to beat a competing restaurant or making a struggling business successful, it involved exploring ideas like making the product appealing to customers, devising ways to cook food efficiently but still delicious, time management, changing the reservation system of a restaurant, a lot of cool neat things that didn't boil down to just making the food good. Now it's all we just cook our food super good and fast and can make 6 mill in 8 hours and fart the amount of customers needed out our butts, all of whom will happily eat our complex, not suitable for eating on the street food without a single complaint.
Tl:dr, this series was great as a sports series but as a shonen series, it sucks.

Evil """"Dark Chefs"""" in the Underworld steal the sacred tradition of food duels, and it's up to the newly minted Elite 10 to deal with them. One dark chef steals the premise of a Neuro villain at a hot springs resort and is subdued by Megumi
The top dog Dark Chef is actually Saiba's son/Soma's brother. Or adopted son from America who he'd occasionally train or something, idk. Anyway, he refers to himself as Saiba.
Soma's dad, Joichiro Saiba, gets beat by dark chef Saiba in a 5-0. Soma's brother Saiba takes Joichiro's knife from the victory and heads to Japan
School finds out Jo lost and that Saiba's headed to the school. Coincidentally, there's a new foreign teacher that's been hired at the school who definitely isn't suspicious and is talking about winning over Erina because only his cooking is good enough for her or some shit
Soma challenges new teacher because I guess Erina's tongue is his or something and loses handily, literally ending up in a trash can
New teacher continues to really be persistent in trying to woo over Erina for an extended period of time with no one suspicious of him being Dark Chef Saiba even though that was one of their worries immediately after Jo lost
Next exam on a beach to make money, Elite 10 start off with a handicap of a shitty place. New teacher comes to Soma and tells him that Erina's gonna get taken far away from Soma which sounds metaphorical
Soma and Erina talk to ram in forced romantic chemistry, and then immediately after Erina gets kidnapped by New teacher who, gasp, turns out to be Saiba and is brought to his hideout with his dark chef associates
Elite 10 overcome handicap and pass because the plot needs it before any of them realize the most important person in the school is kidnapped

The worst thing is that Erina was actually somewhat reciprocating (blushing and stuff) at Saiba's advances, what with him acting like a superior version of Souma that is actually into the damn girl and brings her flowers and treats her well… But then Saiba decided to jump the gun and kidnap her for some completely unexplained reason. Like, what the hell, you were already winning the romance battle, doesn't kidnapping her undo all those 3 months of effort wooing her :getlost:

No romantic interest, just the fact that he is obsessed to make her admit his food is good. I'm not sure Jealous is how I would describe Soma's thought towards the situation, more frustration with losing and stubbornness on his part. Some will claim Soma showed romantic interest because he said Erina looks cuter when she smile, but I call bull on that. Seeing someone as attractive does not equal being interested romantically.
With how insane everything has been, I was hoping the chapter went a completely different direction when they noticed everyone disappeared. Either everyone was abducted by aliens and we switched to a cooking competition on a random planet, where everyone was handicapped due to using ingredients they never seen before, and then somehow that makes them become better then they come back and wipe the floor with the underground chefs with their new experiences. Their food would literally out of this world.
Other thought was that the rapture happened and the manga just ended, or the series continued in Hell, so we could have literal Hell's Kitchen with Gordan Ramsey as the devil. Every chapter he would yell at Soma how bland he is.

Soma's only romantic interest is cooking good shit, which is what we need a lot more of. Manga was at its best when we had cool ass dishes every two to three weeks and real shokugekis.
Soma showed more interest in Hayama when he was briefly a bad guy lol.
I kinda want Erina to say something first but she's easily flustered. Soma is just too one track minded. He's only seeing her a friend and a taste tester so he can be better. He's clearly not ever phased by her appearance in any state.
Honestly he shouldn't even care if someone wants to marry her. Not like she'd just stop cooking or helping out by tasting dishes. The author really needs to actually give Soma an epiphany soon. Cause this could go on forever. It'll wind up like Toriko in the end lol.
