Food Wars - It's In the Trash
-
-
I'd cook up some jokes or something, but if this manga refuses to show cooking why should I? At this point I just wish we didn't have this romance stuff, the only passion we needed was cooking. Erina lost any of that menace she had and is just a doll propped up for the protagonist and villain of the arc to spat over. If the author wanted to have random shenanigans then there wasn't a need for this forced and ridiculous setup. Ugh, I'm pretty much out of steam to make coherent criticisms of this series.

Hey, I also have the right for a vacation. And you would be surprised at how little I care about the current status, I've got plenty of far more entertaining works to read.

Still, it's kinda of illogical to say it would be worse.

Well, yes. One can only hope this upcoming beach trip will focus more on the cooking aspect, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Erina's genius character arc throughout the series
Tsundere -> bland rebellious child who won't eat the food her dad puts on the table for her -> A really nice trophy to win
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Still, it's kinda of illogical to say it would be worse.
Without any focus on the 5-0, it's pretty clear that the story has completely lost its steam, there's no stakes involved, and that the writers are almost intentionally tanking the series, so it puts the whole grand picture in perspective than a stupid sticking point that "this is the one part that really sucks"
-
GUYS GUYS
I get it now
The authors out of ideas and the TOC ranking is making him desperate
So his Azami shounen one on one chefs showdown tournament arc style cum sports style competition that is the generic cliche mixing bowl for shounen success bombed
And now introducing Not Aizen 2/Juhabach is failingSo what does he do next
Of course its time to turn this into a rom-com and desperately appeal to the shoujo demographic!
And also to go back to his roots
Yes this series roots and core is none other thanB O O B S
beach arc! swimsuits! Jiggly puffs!
-
Tosh will certainly enjoy himself, at the very least.
(The nickname of the artist for the series, known for his porn doujins) -
I dont know what annoys me more about this. The sudden romantic turn or the fact that the exams went right back to "expelled if you fail". Apparently they learned absolutely nothing from the Azami arc.

It's cute that you think Azami introduced that. Might want to reread the manga.

I took KzTxL7's comment as meaning they didn't learn that the being expelled for minor mistakes was one of the talking points that allowed Azami is gain popularity with the general population. That take over happened easier because his new rules removed that harsh structure and the students loved him for it because it was the most unfair to the typical student. Hell even one of the beloved top 10 was nearly kicked out multiple times for it. What good does bringing back the rule most people were dissatisfied with do?
-
Heh…Mega Milk.
Also Food Wars is a...romance manga?
-
Shokugeki no Souma is a「 Romance Manga 」
「 Food Wars! in Unbinnable/Not Trash 」

alice in a swimsuit11/10 chapter

I really don't like this "brother sub plot" it is super skeevy that he's even trying to court her. She's only in high school…Plus it's just dumb.
-
Creepy brother pisses me off more and more each chapter. He's gone from flirting and teasing Erina with food to full-on sadistically mocking (and distracting) Souma for being unable to wow her like he does, and obsessively showing up at her office/work/exam venue just to pressure her into dating him.
It's pretty gross, stalkerish behaviour. Also this feels like the premise to an NTR hentai series. Like, author, can you maybe NOT. Focus on the food and fun school hijinks for a while, just move the hell away from "creepy older brother steals Souma's set-up love interest because he didn't confess to her quick enough". It's bleah, and not what I want in this manga at all.
-
I don't think that the brother in the last panel. Also it's pretty obvious that the two brothers will have to team up to take on the next villain.
-
The last page is definitely a fake out and its just Sadatsuka Nao
-
Wow, we are back to the actual school story and I just don't care.
I don't, at all. I feel nothing. I think I'm done.
What a disappointing series this turned out to be.
-
I did find it interesting that "proper" Totsuki makes the elite suffer more instead on top of their privileges.
-
I would rather go back to the "Dark Chefs" than anything involving the brother.
I was actually interested in the exam portion until he showed up.
-
Hey a glimmer of managing a restaurant!
aaaaaaaaaaaaand it's gone
-
Well they did already do managing businesses with the food fest thing when Azami first showed up.
-
I feel like everyone's at a level where all the school exam stuff is a complete non-issue.
-

Yeah we've got a whole bunch of different mini arcs that breathe a bit into the biz, but hey I guess our main focus now is attempting to stick a landing that'll convince all of us that Erina and Soma are a good couple together even though evidence strongly points in the opposite direction
-
In this school, the students/elite 10 hold the power to get rid of the headmaster, but won't abolish their exams to hang out at the beach? Yeah, right.
-
https://readms.net/r/shokugeki_no_souma/278/5332/1
That went from 0-100 really quick.
It also went from sweet to creepy really quick. -
So the plan is to use Escanor and Esdeath to make this interesting again?
-
Did someone say Palace like Persona 5?
Oh neat let me just check right
oh nevermind, it's all of Saiba's """"""Dark Chefs""""""TM
hahahahahahahaha
-
Ah what do we have here? Some nice character interactions, then kinda just zipped past the first day of exams and then suddenly…
Shokugeki no Soma's a kidnapping manga.
Huh, don't much like the looks of that posse. -
At this point I'm reading it just so I can see those two hook up.
Is that a knife shapped like a chainsaw? And what is Colonel Sanders doing there.
-
As someone pointed out on the MS chapter itself, Badbrother chan has Aizen (bleach), Esdeath (Akame ga kill), Sawagejo Cho (Rurouni Kenshin), and Escanor (Nanatsu no Taizai) on his team.
Ahahahah wtf. I swear every chapter I start thinking "hmmm this is going somewhere I like" only to have the twist at the end utterly undermine everything about the setup of the entire chapter. We got some Souma fighting back against his brothers' charms on Erina, Erina feeling feelings for Souma… only for the brother to drop pretenses and CAPTURE HER for no discernible reason? WTF.
Oh god this scene is gonna be doujin'd to death, it's like the perfect setup for an "Erina gets r*ped in a bukkake" doujin. Like seriously, that last panel is rapey as hell, I haven't been this disgusted at a plotline involving a villain being evil to the main heroine since the SAO season 1 (Alfheim kidnapped Asuna plot)
-
I actually laughed out loud and I got to the last page.
-
Can't wait to see how Asashi gets off scott free for literally kidnapping and tying up the principal of a top school who is also a Nakiri.
I will be extremely surprised and shocked if he gets any sort of consequence for this at all. -
Hahahahaha why the hell is shounen jump always having this out-liner manga that goes to trash at a tremendous speed.
-
So we have a cooking nazi now.
That checks out
and Irina and Soma's chemistry is so nonexistent I could almost vomit.
-
Irina and Soma's chemistry is so nonexistent I could almost vomit.
Well, it's more of a very unpleasant dry heave considering how nonexistent it is
-
There will be no consequences because he is actually a nice person. The flowers represent his true self.
-
This manga is such hot flaming garbage now, holy shit.

I disagree, the Erina-Souma chemistry has been there since the beginning. It's just never been shown on Souma's part, until now. It was always Erina starting off hating him for throwing her off with his cooking, then falling for him little by little. He hasn't really ever seen her romantically, only respecting her as a great and a teacher and someone he can trust to taste his cooking… and all that eventually might make him romantically invested (just not quite yet).
The "You look prettier when you smile" thing was just Souma being nice, it wasn't necessarily flirting. He's clearly written to be oblivious to all that. Erina just took it as flirting because... well she's Erina and anyone whose direct with her about her being attractive can make her blush, it's the typical tsundere archetype.
I actually think the will they won't they between Erina and Souma is the only thing stopping me from dropping the series. Everything else, save perhaps Megumi scenes, is utter trash.

I mean, it's got about as much depth and chemistry as any by the number shonen "romance", but Soma has literally no personality aside from "Cook good" and whatever Erina could have had was tossed away in favor of that stupid Azami stuff.
-

Hey I never said it was the paragon of romance writing, just pointing out that it's there, even if it's pretty generic "tsundere falls for cool guy whose focused on winning" archetypical stuff…
Yeah Souma's character is pretty generic, but I'd argue he's no worse than Goku or Luffy. He's basically Shounen Jump's absolute standard protagonist, just like Tsuna or Toriko. Does that make him a "bad" main character? Nahh... Ichigo's a bad main character, Souma is just painfully average. So long as the plot stays entertaining, Souma will be entertaining too. Problem really is the plot's gone really downhill and it's really hard to make him compelling when everything that happens around him is written like hot shite.
-
Soma and Erina have the chemistry of white bread and a cardboard cutout.
In that Erina is a literal cardboard cutout of the tsundere trope and Soma has the personality depth of the most basic of filler food items
-
I'm just wondering when there will be proper romance for the Aldini Bros. or Mimisaka or glasses-kun or bangs over eyes jerky man or the beef bowl club member. Any of them would give Ikumi a decent shot at love, but noooo, she's just another addition to Soma's harem of obliviousness.
-
Never got the craze about Erina besides boo- I mean great character desboobs-ign
I'm more of a Megumi person and those that actually had good development together -

Souma is like the absolute bog-standard shonen male lead. He has nothing that other characters have that make them stand out. Toriko, Ichigo, Naruto, Luffy, Goku, etc are all "shonen leads" but have something that makes them stand out. Souma is like a factory made character, and everything he is has been done better.

What makes Ichigo stand out
-
What makes Ichigo stand out
I literally read the post above you and was going to ask the same thing. I'd also like to know what separates Ichigo from the pack.
-
What makes Ichigo stand out
Nothing. He's probably more cardboard than Soma. Soma at least has the weird quirk of making odd dishes and kinda just laughing off everyone's angst. He's also got a couple of dreams around food.
Ichigo had like no personality. All of his friends were much more interesting especially when he became the ultimate Gary-Stu.
