That was a horrible One Shot
So you know, par for the course
Yeah, I guess that was alright (it had dialogue at least), but so many confusing things that made no sense.
-Why would they sentence normal humans to death for touching a dragon?
-Why is Sushi, the dark dragon, allowed to stick around? And why did they just stop fighting it?
-What was up with that resolution with Selby? Virgo seemed to get over it pretty quickly. For that matter, why did the dragon pretend to be Selby for ten years? Some of those dragon designs were pretty cool though.
there were A LOT other things that make no sense ,like
-if that reverse london things is supposed to be secret, why that girl just uses the phone boot in front of him without any regard for secrecy?
Felt more like the first chapter of a series than a self contained story. To make matters worse its even related to Bleach so there is an emotional baggage already attached to what it is and could be.
It was…okay?
Classic arm dismemberment on Ninnie, although the panties jokes definitely brought down Virgo for me. Noel was a little more tolerable than her shrieking harpie of a partner, but neither really wowed me...
It was… meh.
Noel was good enough, the blonde girl was a cute Hiyori (even the bald jokes)... but there wasn't really much anything. The plot seem too much like Bleach to actually feel endearing, it is more like watching a "what if" where Shinigami are witches and Hollows are dragons.
I laughed when Kubo managed to get someone to lose their arm even in the one-shot, the man knows what he likes and will go for it.
I'm going to guess the plotholes were due to it being a one-shot and if this got serialised these would be fleshed out. The biggest plothole for me was why Noel veey carelessly uses her telephone box in front of Virgo and alert him to all of this, especially when it should be a secret.
There were some cool panels and dragon designs, but overall it was pretty stupid.
Putting the actual plot aside… the guy's plan at the beginning was to wait until she was bent over while feeding his dog, so he could lift up her skirt?
That made him really unlikeable and bothered me throughout most of the story.
It was Kubo's chance to get back into his game
But nope.
All he did was show us once again how obviously bad he is at writing and how you think with so many years of experience under his belt he would get off his high horse for once and actually think his plot through without throwing whatever shit that sticks.
He's half ass-ing it like everything else he did near the end of Bleach. Introducing new ideas to see if it'll impress, taking elements from fictional works here and there, recycling what made him famous in a half hearted attempt for glory and linking the Bleach universe on purpose to cater to his dying fanbase.
I looked forward to this but all I can say is lol that's it I'm done you can't have hopes in an author that you can tell on one read lost any semblance of willingness to be creative in his story.
Dude still good at character designs, can't argue with that.
Kubo should pair with an author so they can become the ultimate duo. Kinda like Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata (Death Note, Bakuman, Platinum End).
Cause like it's said, I have nothing wrong with his art or his designs, he just . . . . . isn't a master storyteller.
His art sucks tho. A key complaint everyone had with Bleach was the lack of backgrounds, and frankly, a lot of his sketches and paneling are pretty lackluster. He's a one trick pony when it comes to fight choreography where he only knows how to amp the intensity of a fight with an "attack from behind." He's got, maybe at most, fairly unique character designs, but he lacks any sort of patience when it comes to most anything else when it comes to the actual drawing

That bar is too high nowadays, with what is set by the collaboration between One and Murata. Also Kubo is just a good artist, that's all…nowhere near a great one.
Yeah he's like that washed out singer that used to release a few good albums, probably one of them platinum'd over a few short years but now constantly in and out of rehab
Had a rough week>Checks BtW is out>Comes here and sees 5 pages of ppl shitting overI'll read it tomorrow, but for the looks of your post, must be just as great as any Tite's work.

Kubo is the japanese Julian Casablancas, then? :ninja:
I smiled at the end with the Soul Society West Branch thing, I'd be down with reading another Kubo series
I thought it was a fun read. Interesting premise, odd characters, unique powers, and goofy twist ending. I can't complain.
Should it become a series then we would once again have a kubo and mashima series to make fun of, lol. Will Kishimoto make a better one than the fourth great ninja war or most of part 2? If not then 3 series to lol about.
Although I dropped fairy tail before it finished and have only read 1 chapter of Fairy…I mean Eden's Zero so far, so even hate reading and taking the piss out off isn't a draw for me anymore. To much good shit to watch and read out there to waste time.
Skimming through it again, this panel in particular looked pretty rough:
!
Meh, it was okay. Nothing spectacular, but not the hot garbage that was the last arc of bleach. Worst part for me were the smug faces, the blonde in particular. Seriously, what is it with kubo and smug faces? Also, what's the deal with the humans can't touch dragons rule? And why have a death punishment? Especially since the majority of the population doesn't even know about dragons?

I assume that is his face while drawing his stuff.:ninja:
or carving phrases onto his table

Plot holes that Kubo or his editor didn't think about filling, we're guessing.
That's not really a plot hole, just something that wasn't explained. I think people are really calling everything "plot hole" these days.
We saw a dragon that came into contact with humans become a Black Dragon and we saw the humans who came in contact with them are regarded as dragons, so logical assumption is that both undergo some sort of change after the contact (and the death clause probably comes from there).

Isn't that kinda like how Fullbringers are born?
The rules pertaining physical contact with dragons felt ridiculous and contrived with the existence of disguiser thingy (like how death penalty for Rukia was), but at least it was subverted in the end. Virgo looks like if Ichigo and Keigo switched souls and Kubo's attempt with slapstick comedy using him was as painful to watch as ever.
Still, I don't understand why Noel didn't suspect a thing when she knew the circumstance of Selby's death. I figured that Virgo should have as well, but he's an idiot so..
That was the most "wtf" thing, if you already knew it was a zombie, why let it roam freely for 10 years?
Or at least tell the vague story of "he saved me that day, I have no idea how we both survived!", but straight up "we knew he was a dragon/european hollow, we just forgot to take care of it".
Did the Ichigo girl lose an arm? So Kubo.

So apparently we're finally going to to learn about Shinji's bankai. Not sure if I even care anymore.
"isn't safe to use around comrades"
"everyone dies like flies when quincies moved a single finger"
"nope still not safe"
"gets jobbed anyway without a fight"
"previous 5th captain probably saved hundreds of comrades sitting on a chair"
"why am i here"
Would have been helpful against Thor wouldn't it?
"gets jobbed anyway without a fight"
How did he get taken out again? I don’t remember.

Kubo's writing in a picture.
Final Paper for the Degree of Master of Arts.
!
With a name like that this should have been a One Piece thesis.
i'm surprised the spoiler wasn't a "the heart" page

In a different world, this person didn't give a fuck a just submitted that page as their thesis
I feel like Daz, Glib or Meta could make a good thesis about the bullshit storytelling conventions in Bleach and how to not write/draw a story.

<3
If anything I've learned a lot from Bleach's storytelling hiccups, to the point where in my own works I use it as an example of what NOT to do. These days, though, I'd say my ranting days are pretty much over. Hell I was the only one updating Applied Logic for like, months.
Bleach - if you're not an expert in Buddhist symbolism, you've been reading it wrong.
That is how the 7th level secrets are revealed.
Did somebody bother to read it? I mean somebody wrote a thesis about it, we gotta know what was written so we can point at the person and laugh.
Now's a good time as any to talk about this design.

I read the summary.
It starts decent enough. Until the However, where you start cringing at every word.
I'm kinda hoping she won an epic bet or something.
! Life, Death, and the Path to Enlightenment: Buddhist Symbolism in the Manga "Bleach"
"Bleach" is a manga best-selling in the US and Japan in the early 2000s, published by Shuesha in its weekly "Shonen Jump" imprint; however, in America the "first arc" ("Soul Society Arc") of the story was received to great success, with the "second" ("Arrancar") and "third" ("Hueco Mundo") "arcs" meeting with great derision as "filler material" and plot-recycling. However, I posit that much of this is due to cultural barriers, as the latter two arcs rely heavily on esoteric Buddhist symbology such as Aizen Myo-o and wish-fulfilling jewels, which were set up in the first arc. As such, this paper sets out to show that Buddhist imagery is in "Bleach" and is inherent to literary assessment of the story's value as a whole. It shows that, in "Bleach," seeking spiritual transcendence drives character development, plot, and setting; that the Buddhist Wheel of Life best explains “powering-up” of characters to higher spiritual and physical planes of being; and that the story’s action and resolution depend on a wish-fulfilling jewel, with several characters rooted in such Buddhist archetypes as nagas (dragon deities), the Wisdom King Aizen Myô-ô, and the Sâkyamuni Buddha. The thesis also gives many opportunities for further study, such as with the depictions (illustrations and narrative) of women's bodies both in the religious context and modern popular (boys') manga context; the use of religious epics as a means to success in "Shonen Jump's" most popular boys' manga in the US and Japan from 2001 - 2005; and a possible shift away from "necessary" tragic endings (that signal and uphold values of cultural uniformity) towards "happy endings" (that signal cultural acceptance of personal identity singularity) in Japanese manga, among younger creators and consumers.

I was against shaming the girl's work just because it was about a manga AP generally dislikes but, damn, the academic years in me are shaking by the complete lack of formality in this. It is written as a forum post… and seems to serve the same purpose as well.
I suppose when a fandom start writing their posts as (self-proclaimed) essays, the lines get blurred.
I mean no disrespect to the actual person, she can believe, just like Kubo, that Bleach had an overlaying themes and poetic imagery rooted in Buddhist symbolism instead of being a run of the mill rule of cool thing.
What I meant was more in the vein of wanting to know which bullshit arguments she pulled on this one, so we can make fun of the applied mental gymnastics of it.
Is this true?
Espada 8th or whatever his original name was the 1st 0th Espada but then he divided himself into Yylfordt Granz and Szayelaporro Granz. Supposedly that this was mentioned in the novel and his sketch was drawn by Kubo. So, that’s why Nnoitora said he (Szayelaporro) wasn’t an Espada anymore in chapter 295.
This was because of in his 0th espada form he was unable to control himself. Unable to do his research to the perfect existence. So he split his soul into 2.

I believe that's the same novel that said Kenpachi's shikai ability was making his reiatsu equal of his opponent.
That pretty much makes it non-canon at this point.
Oh, thank you for the clarification.
But, when it come to Bleach, I feel like, the fans and other people like the novel writers care more about Bleach's world and consistency than Kubo himself.
For years, hardcore fans try to come out with many theories and fan-fic just to make sense of everything. Same with the novel writers.
