Maybe he will be a saiyen experiment.
Dragonball Discussion Kai: Broly but this time it's not Broly
-
-
Honestly, they can go nowhere but up if Toriyama is behind the wheel, which it looks like is true. They're keeping the design, probably the KAKAROT! yell and redoing everything else? I think it's a brilliant fucking move on their part.
-
You can keep the base form of being quiet and reserved compared to Goku being Goku. Keep the temper.
just throw anything that involves babies and crying in the fucking trash
-
Will his power still be maximum though?
-
it…. seems like toriyama is just taking the basic idea of "big strong saiyan motherfucker" and throwing out the rest, what we've seen so far doesn't look like the same ol' broly that's been kicking around for 20 years and the design looks completely different.
So who knows, this might be for Broly what the new God of War was for Kratos, could be a fun reinvention of a lame character into something better
-
I'm actually curious to see what Toriyama is going to do with this new Broly. And I never really was a big fan of Broly.
-
You're telling me this movie is yet ANOTHER frickin' Broly wankfest?
Ugh…
I can't believe I was looking forward to this film at all. Why do they insist on milking this waste of a character when a better alternative was created not too long ago? Even if Toriyama tries to make Broccoli fresh and different, nobody can deny that the same effort could've been put to create a brand-new face, like Beerus for Battle of Gods.
I honestly don't see what others see in this one-note loser.
-
@Purple:
Will his power still be maximum though?
It will be maximumer
-
side note.
I know it fits the pun better, but seeing "Brolli" and not "Broly" is as odd to me as seeing "Gokou"
-
Akira Toriyama: Hey everyone…so yeah I heard Broly is popular for some effing reason therefore instead of making a new, original and exciting story, we are just gonna milk the Broly cow.
Lmao, as if Super in itself wasn't shitty enough already.
-
If there's one positive I can give about this movie, the art for SSJB Goku and Vegeta looks spectacular.
-
Broly was at his best back when he was played by Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.
-
Poster
*someone sees poster: "oh hell yes, a yamucha movie! yamucha vs broly!!!!!"
-
I wonder if he'll make Cooler canon since Freeza is alive and out in space now.
-
@S.C.:
I wonder if he'll make Cooler canon since Freeza is alive and out in space now.
Wait…Cooler wasn't canon?
-
-
Wait are you saying me Broly is canon now?!
-
This one of those things where people will probably hate it on principle even if Broly is now well-written and interesting/a completely different character, lol.
-
I feel like Broly actually did have the potential to have an interesting arc and motive to hate Goku in his first movie; he's the Legendary Super Saiyan, but he was betrayed and almost killed by his own people and has never been anything but an enslaved tool to his father while Goku, this stupid low-class bumpkin living on an insignificant backwater planet gets to live a (mostly) peaceful life with people who (mostly) love and respect him and attains Super Saiyan and becomes the "face" of the Saiyan race to the universe at large.
But then it all got buried under crying babies, blob monsters, and Broly becoming nothing more than a near-mindless berserker in the next movie. So if Toriyama can give him a shot in the arm like he did with Kale somewhat and improve him ('cause with Broly the bar's been set pretty darn low) then by all means more power to him.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I also imagine that at some point today Vic Mignogna suddenly started screaming and knew not why.
-
-
Wait…Cooler wasn't canon?
It wasn't, but it fits a little easier than some of the other movies.
First cooler movie (5), Bojack (9) and Hildegarn (13) are the only movies that fit without much trouble. Beyond that there's always some continuity hiccup that makes it hard to fit, particularly people meeting that they shouldn't know or be comfortable with yet, transformations, or Trunks being in 7 and 8 at all, or Goku/Vegeta being dead.
-
Might as well make Cooler canon as well.
-
Any movie villain (as in pre Berus) being canon, leads to Hitler being canon.

Still better character than that old brain-in-a-jar scientist of the second movie.

@Monkey:
Hi Earthquake .
No lol this time?
-
Can't wait for the next movie, "The Return of Tao Pai Pai", where it is revealed that Tao Pai Pai has been training for two weeks with "quite a bit" of intensity and been drinking some juice, which puts him at SSGSS level. Thankfully, Goku and Vegeta (and Freezer, because we all love to see Freezer everywhere and everytime now) will get the help of Master Roshi, who also reveals that he's been having some nice, hand picked cereals with his morning milk for a month now, which obviously puts him at SSGSS level, too.
As always, the rest of the gang watches. Well, except Gohan. Gohan gets dodonpa'd to near death for shits and giggles near the beginning of the movie.
I mean, if we're gonna make stupid movies about stupid characters that get stupid strong for no reason whatsoever, at least bring back actual good villains.
And then we can do "The Rebirth of the Demon King", "Raditz: The REAL Legendary Super Saiyan Returns", "Fukkatsu no General Blue" and, last but not least, "The Real Battle of the Gods: Ninja Murasaki vs. Lord Yamcha".
–-----------------------------------------
No, seriously. Fuck Broly. Why the fuck did they create Kale which is identical except she's a girl and has something resembling a backstory, only to go back to fucking Broly again? "Now Broly is canonzzz!", so fucking what? Wasn't Kale fucking canon already?
This is milking a franchise on a whole new fucking level. And, no, Toriyama's involvement doesn't give me a single sliver of hope. DB Minus was terrible. Jaco was as bland as duck shit. His Universe 6 designs were awful. His creativity and spark is long gone by now.

To counterbalance that, I like Beerus and Whis, Goku Black is fanfiction as hell, but incredibly entertaining, I love Ultra Instinct not entirely because of it's design, but because of the nature of it and how it ties into Goku's training with Roshi/Kami.
I did really like a bunch of the ToP characters. Some of their designs weren't great, but I like Caulifla and Kale, I like Ribrianne and the magical girl joke, I like Toppo, Katopesla and the Trio De Dangers. I like Champa and Vados for their banter and personality. I like Hit's powers and his little character arc of lightening up. I even like Zeno, even with how one note he tended to be in the ToP arc.
I loved Freeza coming back in the ToP arc despite initially not being down with the idea and I found Cabba's character arc satisfying and want to see more of the U6 Saiyans. Design is just one part of everything.
I realize this is very much opinion-based, but not only did BoG and RoF have much shorter production time and Minus was kinda just an afterthought, this movie is DB's 20th movie and has had a complete stylistic overhaul (that I hope sticks to further DB stuff), I think if not Toriyama, then Toei will want guarantee it's quality. Out of the DB movies I've seen BoG is my favorite and that is definitely all Toriyama and modern Toriyama at that.
I'm cautiously optimistic.
-
It sounds like Broly's basic design might be staying the same, so I guess Yamcha-Saiyan is a new character. That's what I wanted, so I'm happy.
-
I was going to writte a little more about Brolli, but the neutral dude is just too perfect for my interest of him. While in Latam we were blessed by the mexican dub, the movies were just ignored. We got a tree of might teatrical release and nothing else, so my reaction to Cooler and Broli was just as proto-wiki entries that just keept getting more movies, and I wondered why Frieza-lite and this green saiyan keept taking on movies.
Granted, the two that I really wanted to see were Jameba and Tapion's, as I was more interested in the otherworldly and demonic side of Dragon Ball.
-
When will fan favorite Garlic Jr finally make it back to the big time
-
Gotta bring Cell, 16, Nappa or Raditz back for extra "Freeza revealed for ToP" nostalgia.
-
When is Boss Carrot coming back?
He should become the Dragon Team’s lookout since he can see every threat from the moon.
-
Oh you know what. I was misremembering Cooler showing up with patchwork Frieza when Trunks first appears.
-
I was hoping they'd give Kale more focus. She and Caulifla would make for a great main duo for a TV series.
Nagamine is directing, though, for this Broli should be pretty cool. It's a shame Yama'uchi Shigeyasu didn't get to direct Broli during his prime.

The only way I could see the U6 saiyans being relevant is if Paragus is the King of Salada(it would be a good plot twist).
-
Or maybe it's a Yamcha from a universe where he scratched his cheek just once.
-

This would make the king pretty stupid for not bringing his strongest warrior to the ToP or even the U6 tournament

Maybe he is thought dead and in hiding?

His creativity and spark was a bit suspect even back in day with the manga.
I mean how else do you rationalize Commander Red a dwarf whose suppose to be the main villian of his own arc, who wants the Dragonballs to make himself taller and dies like bitch.
or
Goku losing to Tien in the tournament by smashing into a truck head first.
or
Not knowing what to do with the any character not named Goku, Gohan, or Vegeta.

I didn't care about Kale in the least but liked Caulifla's dynamic with Goku; she's the second child he always wanted.

The Kale and Caulifla dynamic is so good. Kale both boasts and grounds Caulifla's bigger personality, while Caulifla gives Kale the confidence and push she needs to express herself. I think there's a lot potential there to basically take a page from Pretty Cure and focus on the bond of these two women. I wish Dragon Ball would employ the same amount of variety we see from the Fate franchise as of late. There's a lot of talented directors at Toei Animation that could really do something special with those two girls.

The entire point was that was petty and dumb and weaker than all his men, his own subordinates called him out on it. Tao Pai Pai was the real threat of that arc, and after they made a big deal about him being more elite than anyone there, there wasn't much room for escalation. It's not too different from the Pilof gang or Bulma wanting to wish for strawberries/a boyfriend. Also, the series was still largely a comedy at that point.
Goku losing to Tien in the tournament by smashing into a truck head first.
To show that they were evenly matched but it was just luck that cost Goku the win that time (and also keep him from developing an ego from winning too early.) That was probably one of the best fights in the series and one of the only legitimately even matches.
Not knowing what to do with the any character not named Goku, Gohan, or Vegeta.
That's not fair.
He didn't know what to do with Gohan.

Seconded, seconded, seconded, seconded
And also - I hate Broly as much as the next fan (with a brain) but I think the origin of his hatred is pretty funny and should be kept canon. Dragon ball shouldnt be taken so seriously.
-
They should definitely change that motivation. That's the most ridicoulous thing about the character. If you're not doing at least that you might as well leave it alone.
-
I dunno if it'd work as a joke. What would be funny is if rewamped Broly had a personality that had some comedic aspects to it like most of DB's characters.
Then again, the ruthless/creepy villains of the story kinda don't have that… 'cept Tao, I guess. King Piccolo, Piccolo Jr, Freeza, Cell, even Vegeta in the Saiyan arc are played pretty straight, Freeza has a few instances with the Ginyu Force.
Pilaf and some of the Red Ribbon antagonists have comedic aspects, so do Buu and Beerus. Seriously Beerus is probably the best example of serious vs. comedic.
But, ehh, dunno if they can do comedy with Broly here. Doesn't feel like that type of villain. I see Toriyama making him more like the Vegeta/King Piccolo type of villain.
-
He didn't know what to do with Gohan.
Just to be sure Robby we are talking about Gohan and not mixing him up with Goten right?

Seems kind of redudant when we already watched him lose to Roshi which I figured was part of the reason Roshi entered into that tournament in the first place for.
-

Post Cell Gohan is a complete mess of a character.
-
Post Cell Gohan is a complete mess of a character.
Yeah, pretty much.
And Broly should keep his origin, but should get a re-worked personality.
Cell is pretty cool, but the seriousness of HIS motivation is cringey. Very weak.
