Chapter 903: The Fifth Emperor

Seems to me that luffy's "readiness" to be an emperor is irrelevant, no matter how much people argue he is not ready, the reality is his been hype by morgans, he has a fleet and claimed territories(Fishman Island) and within a moth probably less(inside the OP universe) he will be credited with orchestrating Kaido's downfall, inside the op universe Luffy is effectively an emperor and before the hype dies down there will be no Kaido.

As for sanji's raid suit,I hope is just a gag so that whem he caves in and use it, it is just a regular tuxedo with the germa logo and he gets mad.Also I seriously doubt his bounty will be higher than Zoro's for long, I wouldn't be surprised if next chapter there is a raise for Zoro.

One thing I loved about this chapter is how well it all fits together and makes sense even if we with better knowledge don't agree. We know Luffy didn't plan out the assassination attempt but with the way the bomb was in the Tamatebako from way back when it got sent from Fishman Island it looks to outsiders that this has been a long time in the making.

I just remember when GolD.Ace22, Melker, Razh, Watch-Man, Sereques, accesstimeco, SeaofHope, Lord Monkey D, Blissed, otakufan, Megaman and a large list of people in this forum claimed constantly that i was wrong. Raid suit finally is coming! That proves that Sanji needed an upgrade to fight stronger enemies (maybe Admiral levels?). Strawhats are a new generation of pirates more related to technologies (like us Millenials) who takes also the bests things from "old school" pirates. Thanks for the support!

For my part, I was wrong. Mea culpa.

Still don't see how it advances his skill set, though, or why he would even want to use it given his utter disdain for his father/brothers (which the chapter seems to bear out). I'm leaning toward Usopp and Franky getting their hands on it, personally.

Great chapter. This was the most exciting bounty bump since Water 7. The two after that felt small and kinda insignificant for Luffy at least. Usopp reaching 200 million was great, too, though.

Sanji getting a raid suit really belittles everything the vinsmokes have done to him. He's going to wear the suit made by the man that killed his mother? The brothers that tortured him daily? It completely destroys his character and goes against the original message of Sanji not needing them.

People are saying he will have to use it when someones in danger, yet all that training he did for 12 years of his life, and instead has to resort to a suit from the family he hates as a reminder that he isn't strong enough without their help. Plus he loses his epithet that connects him to Zeff. Talk about destroying a character.

Maybe Akainu should send his uniform to Luffy and have Luffy wear that too. Or have Arlong send his Hawaiian shirt to Nami.

Sanji hasn't lost the "Black Leg" epithet. They don't put "Strawhat Luffy" on the wanted posters, they put "Monkey D. Luffy". Sanji has always just been listed as "Sanji" on his bounty poster, all that happened is that they tacked on the Vinsmoke name, which got the focus for plot reasons.

As to the raid suit itself, we don't know what's going to come of it yet, and Sanji's vehement distaste for his father's work seems pretty evident in the chapter itself. Until we're shown otherwise, I'm leaning toward Usopp and Franky dismantling the thing to harvest it for new tech.

About Sanji and the raid suit:
This is a story. If something happens/is presented, it usually is for a reason. This has significance, whether if you like the idea or not - Sanji might be suiting up at some point. I myself would have, prior to this, shrugged off the idea (although not completely denying the possibility).

With that said, I would say the significance of the suit is this to the story:

A) It is a tool for Sanji to use; something to enhance his combat abilities. If he ever does use it, I imagine it would be to save Nami and/or Robin in a serious situation, where lives’ are at stake. That’s just my personal speculation if it were to happen
B) It is a way for Oda to tell us his biological family respects him, and dare I say, see him as one of them? While Sanji, at this time, does not have mutual feelings in that regard, will perhaps at one point ”forgive them”/simply be neutral about their past history. In this case, the raid suit is more of a symbolic thing to the story and possibly won’t be used.

C) Both of the above.

D) Or, the most obvious: it has a 3 written on it. You guessed it. Mr. 3 is about to get even more lit.

I don't think he's papering over their past deeds so much as he's leaving an opening for the Vinsmokes to change their ways. Judge is a bastard through and through, but he's been made to swallow his pride a fair bit with the failed Big Mom alliance and being put so blatantly in debt to his greatest "failure" of a son, so I think he may well be forced to seriously reexamine his worldview before too much longer. That may not result in him becoming a nice guy, but I can see a softening around the edges and a chance to start repenting for his crimes.

Besides, something needs to happen to give Reiju a better lot in life. I'd say she's had it almost as bad as Sanji did, albeit in a different, less overt way.

There might be other non-Yonkou with higher bounties, but they're probably underlings of someone else (a Yonkou, the Revolutionaries, etc.), while Luffy's the "head of a faction" unto himself.

In every sense Luffy is an Emperor already, it feel more like Morgans just acknowledged what Luffy already is than elevated him to this level. Morgans is basically saying "btw, in case you people didn't notice, there is already a fifth emperor on the Grand Line". He is a baby Emperor, but an Emperor nonetheless.

All you got now is the typical suspects who love cool things, Luffy and Chopper, unsurprisingly wanting him to put on the suit. Big whoop. That's not a crime on their part, especially since Sanji never went into detail about his past.

And Judge/Niji giving him the suit essentially symbolizes that all for their bluster post-870, they no longer see him as one. Being handed a raid suit is a big deal, regardless of whether Sanji actually ends up using it, this act solidifies that Sanji never needed to do one last big thing to gain his family's respect before the arc ended. It's just that they'll never admit it with words, at least not anytime soon. I don't really care if Sanji uses it or not, and obviously understand why some are instinctively against the thought of it happening. But at the same time, again, Oda clearly isn't just handwaving it away, as shown by Sanji's current feelings concerning his family.

If people are thinking that it's impossible for Oda to have Sanji go down this route and have it be executed well when all is said and done, clearly Oda feels differently.

There's also the issue of being recognized as such by the public.

Even if he's technically meeting the requirements to be an Emperor, no one will consider him one if they don't know about it. By contrast, if the masses are considering him an Emperor, even his greatest detractors (the original Yonkou, the World Government) will be forced to take him more seriously.

Truth be told, that's probably how becoming Pirate King works too.

As you said his crew doesn't know the details, which is why I feel if they did they wouldn't be so for him wearing the suit.

The suit goes a lot against what Sanji has said about him not needing them and not being a vinsmoke, and being ashamed of what they stand for. So for him to wear their uniform really steps on those words. And then it's like what did he even train for when in the end he has to resort to their technology? May as well have just stayed with them instead of Zeff then.

Sanji probably will wear it, but that's the bad part. The chance of Oda executing this well is zero. He's most likely going to just wave off their crimes and have Sanji forgive them or spin it in some way that him wearing it is not a bad thing.

I think the most important part of being an emperor here is the ability to gain followers en mass and establish territories. Should obviously be able to defend territory in whatever way. I imagine an emperor doesn't actually have to be strong themselves as long as they're influential enough to gain strong followers to fight for him. But now I'm delving into my personal wish that Gol D Roger was secretly weak. But yeah Morgans can see Luffy has the makings for becoming an emperor and is fueling the fire.

I don't see the point in it being a temporary power-up (Reminds me a little about how people felt about Zeus and Nami lol), much less it breaking, but I suppose it's not an impossibility for it to be a one-time thing.

What also distinguishes Emperors from other pirates is that they're the closest to finding One Piece and in that regard, Luffy already surpassed Kaidou and Big Mom. I suppose Shanks is friendly with the Minks and has access to their Road Poneglyph if he feels like it and we don't know how far Blackbeard is. The Straw Hat Pirates are the only ones with two Road Poneglyphs in their pockets.

I guess we'll see just how many people consider him the 5th emperor during the Reverie.

Honestly, I feel like he's gonna keep that bounty for a while. It's already immense and the amount of people with higher ones can probably be counted with your fingers.
