Chapter 902: End Roll
-
Glad it ended. Not my favorite arc by a mile.
Sweet spread, though.
-
Actual chapter was way better than the spoilers, I feel like latelt the spoilers have been making the actual chapter sound worse than it is. Then the chapter comes out, and it's executed very well by Oda.
-
Okay, okay, I'll eat both crow and humble pie. I made a fool of myself in the spoiler thread and then got a MOAB-worthy feels bomb dropped on us.
-
Fantastic ending, like holy shit, I loved every single page.
-
I like how one chapter i enough for Oda to tie in so many loose ends.
Worried about Germa and the Sun Pirates though!
-
As much as a lot of this arc has been testing my patience, this was a really strong finisher with tons of feels. I’ll try and retread Wholecake relatively soon.
-
I actually liked the arc. I know we heard big Mom talk a lot about the cake. But it wasn’t as dragging as “señor Pink vs Franky”, “whoops, another string illusion” or “we gotta stop the birdcage”. Luffy “only” beating the commander instead of the Yonko gives him potential growth while still achieving stuff (getting sanji back, getting Poneglyph copy, getting new allies and show their achievements to the world through Morgan). The setting was nice, the characters colourful and well designed; and we had some great worldbuilding. I had fun with this arc!
-
Best chapter ever!
Ok, ok, best chapter in a while. Our dawg Sanji finally got a kiss! Top that Zoro! :ninja:
This is the Oda I like. Taking time to process things, without rushing.
-
Are people still going to consider Pedro's death a "fakeout" like Pell's, Brownbeard's,and everyone else's?
-
I liked the Katakuri part the most.
-
The double spread is kind of confusing, does Big Mom say "Life or Death" from afar, or does she say it when she arrives before them?
-
Are people still going to consider Pedro's death a "fakeout" like Pell's, Brownbeard's,and everyone else's?
If there is any wiggle room, people will. I honestly think Oda has turned a new leaf on the “no-death” policy at this point though.
-
I really like using song lyrics to guide the pace of the chapter.
-
Pardon me if im being stupid, but is Katakuri happy Luffy escaped? Im confused…
-

A "new leaf" where he brings back a character like Moscato, who nobody "wanted" to be alive. :ninja:
-
Not a fan of these singing chapters, the text is super confusing so I have to blend it out to understand the drawings. But I still enjoyed it.
Regarding Pudding, why so inconclusive? Would it really kill us to see a romantic kiss in One Piece. Also, seems like she only cut out the goodbye scene and not all of his memories. Why?
Katakuri smirking and Brulée saying "I knew it". I wonder how other readers understand this, but my initial reaction was "I kinda let him win / don´t mind losing".
I worry a bit that this is it, Totland is over. We won´t get to see what actually happens now that BM arrived, until much later.
I really liked the Carrot & Sanji scene.
-

The last part of their conversation I found confusing as well, who is saying "You would probably think it's great"? Is that Brulee or Katakuri?
-
What a fantastic chapter, a great ending to Whole Cake Island Arc IMO.
Katakuri - Brulee flashback was the highlight for me.
-
Are people still going to consider Pedro's death a "fakeout" like Pell's, Brownbeard's,and everyone else's?
It's still in the exact same boat as theirs. All that has changed is that Sanji is in the same boat as the others as far as their current knowledge goes regarding Pedro.
-

I think it's not so much "I let him win.", it was "I could have fell forward to save face, but I fell backwards instead to truly accept this defeat". Meaning he finally accepts that he doesn't need to do this whole facade anymore, and can just do what he wants.
-

Looks like Brulee said that. I think Kata might have himself a little crush.

The bubble points to Brulee.
-
Yet another guy who thinks this was 20x better than the spoilers. Don't know how I'll feel about this years down the line, but I'm loving it right now.
Loved this arc. Possibly top 5, warts and all.
-
@Galaxy:
The bubble points to Brulee.
Thanks, after re-reading it I think I figured it out. So she's saying that if I told you where Luffy is, you'd be happy. Katakuri asks her half-jokingly can you see the future, she tells him what happened, he smiles and she says "I knew it". Correct?
-
I'm going to miss these guys so much. Katakuri, Pudding, all of them.
@Galaxy:
A "new leaf" where he brings back a character like Moscato, who nobody "wanted" to be alive. :ninja:
But we got a reason for his revival lol
-
Regarding Pudding, why so inconclusive? Would it really kill us to see a romantic kiss in One Piece. Also, seems like she only cut out the goodbye scene and not all of his memories. Why?
Because she wanted a keepsake - she kissed him so she could take that memory to remember him by. It's heartbreaking.
-

Yep, that's how I interpreted it.
-

Yeah, I was gonna say of any near deaths brought back this one had at least the most logical reason. It was even alluded to the very chapter he "died".
Pedro though….if he survives I'm not sure I'll like it. His whole character is about being the sacrifice that brings on the next generation and the dawn of the world. If he comes back, then what was the point?
-
It's still in the exact same boat as theirs. All that has changed is that Sanji is in the same boat as the others as far as their current knowledge goes regarding Pedro.
It really isn't, though. None of those character's had the foreshadowing that Pedro did. He knew it was going to be his last journey and he was able to accomplish his "dream" by helping to make sure the SHs escaped (since he believed they would bring about the new dawn). He even passed on his will. None of the fakeout deaths had as much involved in them as what happened to Pedro.
-
Katakuri is likely happy Luffy escaped since Luffy proved himself at the end of their fight and the fact that he escaped means he’s living up to Katakuri’s estimation of him.
-
The last part of their conversation I found confusing as well, who is saying "You would probably think it's great"? Is that Brulee or Katakuri?
Me personally, I'd be pretty pissed if someone came into my home, beat up on countless siblings of mine, made my mother/captain go bat-shit crazy enough to the point she'd destroy her own territory, and personally whip my ass unconscious too. I know Katakuri's an odd one but if I were him I'd chase him down to Wano with an formidable army, not lay down half conscious smirking about someone more or less ruining your life escaping almost scott-free. Pretty sure he and Cracker are getting demoted too.
-
Definitely better than the spoiler first suggested, but I am not so sure I really liked this ending or not.
It will be depends on the following chapters. The small bit with Katakuri and Brulee was perfect, Oda nailed that part.
Too bad about the Golden Week, we have to wait 2 weeks again…
The color spread was pretty meh by the way.
-
great chapter, bad ending
-
I really like the last page of this chapter. I can't believe the real chapter was much better interpreted than my expectations of the spoiler.

I mean, all things considered, they are winning. Sure not in the conventional win, but everyone is still alive and they still have a fleet. I can see where you're coming from, but they didn't really get off scot free. The BMP have their allies in the Sun Pirates, Mama is up and going, and they will almost assuredly go after the Straw Hats. I think it works, because for right now he can smile, knowing they'll fight again.
-
Oh dear, Oda is a fucking genius at visual narrative. This whole arc is absolutely outstanding to look at, but some chapter are just mindblowing, like this one. That page where the borders of the panels are like a roll of film is just genius. Best ending chapter of One Piece easily. I just love all this wrap up in a perfectly captured bittersweet mood. Lots of great moments in this chapter alone! Amazing, just amazing.
-
I liked this chapter a lot altough I didn't read the narration boxes.
I personally never liked Dogtooth but this flashback with him as kid trying to pprotect his siblings really got me. And with the little kids and how happy they seem and how they actually look like siblings while eating really got to me and kind of like them all of the sudden.
People in that country are enabling psychopathic kids. Seriously… The amount of shit they get away while terrorizing the queen's kid is crazy.
A nice sour moment for Pedro's death. That was nice.
While I enjoythe Zeff and Sanji parallel. Wasn't nourishing anyone no matter what a Sanji thing?I seem to remember Zeff being fine with kicking Ging. Not that I think he wouldn't feed people that aren't a danger like those low pirates.
The fishman sould be able to escape fine. The sea is right there and the strawhats are out of reach. the Germas might be screwed tho.
Are people still going to consider Pedro's death a "fakeout" like Pell's, Brownbeard's,and everyone else's?
I do
-
Now I just gotta wait till the official release, where hopefully Stephen can turn the song into something lyrical that can be understood.
-

No, Katakuri let him win. That was the meaning. All the people screaming that Luffy won is not truth. It was Katakuri decision to fall backward and let him escape. And i was right when others were saying the opposiite.

Here we go again…
-
My understanding of the Katakuri scene is, Brulee won't forgive Luffy for what he did to his brother, as Brulee treat the area that was damage by Mogura. Katakuri smirked meaning did what exactly? Brulee was like I knew it meaning you took this damage on purpose.
That was quite a redeeming scene for the die hard Katakuri fans that swore on their father's grave Luffy can't beat Katakuri.

Here we go again…
I'm sorry but that scene mean Katakuri let him win. There is no other way to swing it.
-
I think there're chances this line of the spoiler is wrong:
In front of Jinbe, Aladding, Judge, Ichiji, Niji, Reiju … Big Mom says "Live or Death" ...
She may be not right in front of them, but just singing the line while comming to meet all of them
-
Woah, 99% positive that the pirates Zeff feeds are the same pirates featured in one of the Romance Dawn one shots that Oda made before One Piece proper.
Pretty sure the captain's name was 三日月ギャリー in Japanese, something like Crescent Moon Gary/Gerry?

No it doesnt….it just means he decided to pass out backwards instead of on his face and just deal with the embarrassment. After fighting Luffy he doesnt care anymore. Katakuri lost lmao.

I mean it was pretty definitive in the previous chapters that he beat him, even if he got better at this point. Same thing with Doflamingo, just because they got up afterwards doesn't mean they weren't beaten.

No ain't that the truth! Recent spoiler threads (as in last 2 before this) inspired me to change my sig! Lately I try to ignore most of the posts there, just go in see first post that usually has spoiler summary and then scroll through pages for early pics. First 5 pages or so tend to be "wah wah wah, chapters no good!" but then the chapter comes out, we read it in full and it is good. >.<

Makes sense. It wasn´t just the reaction to the last panel where she said "after all he did to my bro", it was related to Luffy escaping.
Because she wanted a keepsake - she kissed him so she could take that memory to remember him by. It's heartbreaking.
It´s a bit egoistical to steal a memory like that plus it´s her own face on the film.
Then again, she was shown to be self-conscious and self-hating so having tangible proof of another person´s caring view of her might help her learn to love herself.
