I was hoping that we would have 3D2Y by now
-
I still think the producer (or whomever it was) misspoke and meant to say Heart of Gold…

Such a shame, 3d2y was much better than that lame special
-
I believe it was Josh Kocurek (who was the brand manager for OP at the time) who said that. I thought that interview was from before Heart of Gold was even announced. I don't think he misspoke, just that they didn't go down that route for whatever reason. Who knows whether or not they still plan on dubbing any specials in the near future.
-
That’s what I’m saying. I think he was talking about how they were acquiring Heart of Gold, but he got the titles mixed up.
-
I know what you're saying. What I said is that the interview was from well before HoG was even announced in Japan, so there's a good chance that nobody at FUNimation knew about it at the time. I don't think he got the titles confused, and there was intention to dub 3D2Y at the time. Why that fell through is beyond me.

Oh. Your side is proven if it's true that the interview took place before HoG was announced.

Speaking of, their facebook page just posted a gif from a scene in the sixth OP movie. Mean anything? Probably not, but one can dream.

Link, please?
I wanna see it for myself.

Never mind I found the post you were talking about and I also saw this comment.
OMFG!
There are so many red flags on why that guy is wrong. But I don't wanna turn it into a what's popular or not contest.
So I'm just gonna say that this guy's an idiot and does not represent America or the united states fanbase. lol
I mean? If that comment was true? One Piece would stop dubbing at episode 204 back in dark ages of dubbing. (after Toonami died but before its revival.)
The comment just rubs me the wrong way.
-
He isn’t entirely wrong, just greatly overstating it. If One Piece was gangbusters, we’d have gotten all the films years ago. I think OP episodes are a good investment for Funimation, but the fact is that they would’ve released the other movies if the property was doing extremely well.
And we don’t honestly know how much an old film costs to acquire. So how can we say whether they’ll definitively make their money back on them? I mean, they haven’t released the films for a reason, and I’m not convinced it’s because they just haven’t gotten around to it.

It does seem weird that they post a gif of one of the best Zoro scenes from movie 6. But I guess you could say that they either A.) found a clip of it on Tumblr and posted on their Facebook site or B.) they may have the license but they are not allowed to reveal it due to legal reasons.
Because legally they could get into trouble by Toei Animation if they found out. But since they posted it on their official Facebook page.
It might lead to hints that some of the movies may come to the US?
Plus, wouldn't the films be cheap nowadays since they came out many years ago apart from each other…
I don't know much money they cost. I'm just speculating on the whole subject. I mean Funimation did have to censor a statue of the colossal titan in one of their DVD interviews due to legal reasons and is an IP of a different company. (Even though Funimation owns the US dubbing rights)
Could be for any reason why they posted the movie 6 gif animation. But they did post a gif animation of Strong World. So maybe they just wanna fool with us quite a bit.
-
I wouldn’t look into it or get any hopes up. If it was a video clip, I’d suspect they owned the content, but a gif not at all. They probably just googled “Zoro gif” and liked the flashy animation there.
-
Eh? Maybe your right. It's not like they would hint bomb an announcement by posting a gif and having the rights to movie 6.
They are still dubbing the show and by the time we get to Dressrosa, it would be 20 years in American dubbing in 4 to 5 years.
After they are done dubbing the catch-up? What else are they gonna do?
-
Meanwhile, the UK got movies 1-9 way back in 2014, but still no news about Film Gold, and it's been almost a year since the last TV series collection… Guess the One Piece anime is dead in the UK again.
It does seem odd that licensing costs would be an issue when a much smaller market was able to churn out 3-movie-packs for £18 (the equivalent of $25 USD) a pop; OK, no dubbing costs there, but you'd think that the lack of a dub would also put some people off. If Funi does get them, I wonder if Baron Omatsuri will be released as a 'Hosoda Collection' edition? It fits the bill, but would be the only one that's part of another franchise.
-
Hosoda’s best movie, in my opinion.
-
I don’t think we will ever catch up. I think funi feels comfortable with this gap we have in the series at current. And would like to keep it that way. Just my opinion.

Indeed. The guy knows how to direct movies. If you give me a role in directing a Disney film? Millions of people will cry like gangbusters worldwide

I will say I'm happy they've been great about dubbing the the "Films" as they've been releasing, since those were a pretty pivotal change in OP history from the old "Movies" with Oda actually having more to do with them. I always felt like them dubbing Movie 8 was more like them giving the finger to 4Kids when they were being stingy on the rights of the first 130 episodes. Maybe someday we'll get these things but I definitely want the episodes prioritized. Joel said they'd be caught up in around 3 years and I already don't see that happening, but I don't want to be further from that goal.
It's an even further stretch but I'd still love for them to dub Strong World Episode 0. It would've been nice if that could've replaced one of the Toriko crossover episodes in their DVD release or something.

Not that it means anything for us, but apparently the Korean dub just started airing the Punk Hazard arc (from episode 579) and apparently they dubbed "We Go" (they had previously just used the Japanese version for eps. 517-578). Maybe Avex is loosening up on letting international dubs cover openings?

Hmm? Maybe.
I don't remember if they were an official word from Funimation or Avex on why they stopped companies from dubbing their songs. Kinda stupid and missing the point of an International market.
I know Japan is Xenophone? But still…

There's never been official word on from any party, be it Axev or Toei, as to why many Toei properties suddenly stopped allowing foreign entities to dub opening, closings and insert music, as had been standard for several decades. All we know is that something changed around 2012 (and coincidentally when Toei introduced a new director for handling international acquisitions).
Here's hoping that we have a chance to hear some dubbed themes again. I don't have a twitter, but if one of you guys can get Mike McFarland's attention again about reintroducing the dubbed openings, maybe we have a better chance this time?

Unlikely this will happen, but someone get on this pronto. (I also have no Twitter.)
-
Guess so.
Pray that the new guy gets fired and is replaced by someone else. lol
-
Wow, and I'm over here worrying that the whole reason Punk Hazard is delayed is because they are having trouble getting the rights to put "Hands Up" on the DVDs

@Elektrik:
Wow, and I'm over here worrying that the whole reason Punk Hazard is delayed is because they are having trouble getting the rights to put "Hands Up" on the DVDs
Inconsistencies with the songs (IE: the first 4 being dubbed and the rest being subbed) annoyed me at first. However, I have since got used to it and it doesn't bother me that they aren't dubbed anymore. However, hearing that Hands Up! was a difficult one to license and pretty much no international company managed to get it, pisses me off. Even FUNimation Simulcast didn't get it. That makes our chances that it will be on the DVD, slim to none. I know CrunchyRoll had a few episodes that used Hands Up! (which I am unsure how they managed to do that) but all-in-all, I am okay with them not dubbing any more songs, but I don't like it when they skip over opening credits. Especially songs that I actually really like and wouldn't mind owning on my DVDs.
Even the songs I don't like, I would still be annoyed if they skip them… Sort of like how they skipped Ending 14 on their release, which really annoyed the hell out of me. It is not about the songs, it is about having it complete like the Japanese Broadcast and disc releases that I like.
-
yeah Crunchyroll was able to get it for part of their stream
soo maybe?? it will still be possible to get it on the physical release? Plus CR/FUNi are kinda working together now so who knows, the episode it starts on (591) should be on the second voyage of the PH arc so hopefully we'll find out later this year
-
I've never been too worried over whether Hands Up! since Crunchyroll was able to license it. Crunchyroll was unable to get the license for several of the OP/EDs, whereas the only one FUNimation didn't was Mirai Kokai, so I think that's pretty promising. I do find it interesting that FUNimation got Crazy Rainbow but not Mirai Kokai, considering they're both by Tackey & Tsubasa. Does anybody know the status of these two songs in other dubs?

Neither of these two songs were skipped in any of the other international dubs. In fact, the skipping of openings and endings has been really inconsistent over several dubs. The German dub skipped Share the World, Kaze Wo Sagashite, and Fight Together, while the French dub hasn't skipped a single opening.

No new One Piece in June, heres hoping we can start Thriller Bark in July

I think you mean Punk Hazard
-
Yes that is correct, i meant Punk Hazard lol
-
As expected. No big deal yet. Really crossing my fingers hard for July though; I doubt we’ll get it that soon. They haven’t even announced the license.

They stopped doing licensing announcements with Season 8. Now they just announce them through their solicitations so don't worry about that
-
I'm expecting / hoping Collection 22 gets announced next, usually they put one out once the voyages are 4 sets ahead
-
Just got Season 9 Voyage 4 in and the commentary features Brynn April (Shirahoshi) and Troy Hughes (Manboshi) and the Pop Up Moments feature has one of FUNi's copywriters, Godswill, Brynn April and Kyle Phillips talking about moments that happen on the set while watching them. Kyle was the one I suspected would take over for Joel with directing the series and considering that he's in this bonus feature (despite not directing any of the episodes on this set) instead of Joel makes me think that my theory was true. Guess we'll find out soon
-
I got Season 9, Voyage 4. I have to say I'm still enjoying the dub of the Fishman Island arc more then when I saw these episodes originally.
-
FUNi did a cool little promotion with DeviantArt that includes a really interesting interview with Mike. Definitely worth a read and it also seems like they're now referring to Mike as the sole ADR Director: https://go.deviantart.com/journal/Fan-Art-Feature-One-Piece-730052763

That was a really good article.
-
Good on Funimation and DA for promoting the recent DVD of Season 9, Voyage 4.
-
I have finished Season 9, Voyage 4. Zeo in the dub continues to be great in my opinion. Also the dub continues to be great as usual. Now I can't wait for the next set, which is going to have the introduction of Big Mom, Pekoms and Baron Tamago as well the return of Smoker.

I'm SALIVATING for the next set.
-
Might want to clean that up…
-
Voyage 4 has only one audio commentary, and it features Bryn Apprill (Shirahoshi) and Troy Hughes (Mamboshi) with no direction. Troy is a veteran sports radio personality from the Dallas area.

Season 9 Voyage 5 Trailer:
-
As usual, the trailer is pretty meh. I also found it odd that it included an audio clip of Luffy saying one of the episode titles at the end of the trailer.
-
Yeah, trailer was meh. Why not tease certain SUPER IMPORTANT character introductions that take place on this set?
-
Episodes 564 and 565 are available to watch on Funi's website
