Chapter 889: An Unknown Mama
-
-
Jack and his crew were able to fight minks head on, plus minks where switching. However big moms foot soldiers seem fodder compared to jacks army. Where are katakuris, crackers, snacks or smoothies crews? I don't know if it's just me , but I feel like strawhats are rolling 12th 6 in dice this arc.
Kaido's crew is on a whole other level. Jack seems better than Cracker and Smoothie and he's probably the 3rd weakest Calamity. Big Mom's Shichibukai ally is Jinbe, while Kaido's is Doflamingo. In addition, the Shogun is probably on SC/Calamity level too.
@Kaido:
Yes, the arc's end will very likely feature two Sweet Commanders down
It's not 2. It's 3/4, including the strongest of them all. The only reason people aren't considering Smoothie's demise yet is simply because they can't find a proper 1 v. 1 match against her, which shouldn't even be a point of consideration imo. She's not as strong as Katakuri (this was clearly stated several times), and between all of Germa, Sanji, Firetank Pirates, Fishman Pirates, Jinbe with his ocean advantage, there is enough firepower to take her out.
-
Every time I look at this chapter title a kernel of dyslexia kicks in and I instead read "An Unknown Meme."
-

Strength is relative. A Yonkou crew could look overwhelming against the Minks but not when up against the protagonists.
@Kai:
Kaido's crew is on a whole other level.
No he's not. lol.
-
Would you look at this and think those guys can clash with Kaido?
!
I won't, but apparently those hobos can face him.
-
@Kaido:
If someone told me a year and a half ago that the singing and dancing old woman Big Mom, along with the dopey-looking cloud and sun next to her, would create such an intensely frightening image, I wouldn't have been able to imagine it.
I get that feeling too.
If someone would told me that "the Almighty Charlotte Lin Lin" owner of Haoshoku Haki, a skin related to iron itself, with a fruit that with feeling fear is needed to kill, queen of weather manipulation, owning a database of everything that happens in her island, and able to give life to all things around her… is getting skinny, only screams "WEEEDING CAAIIKKKUUU", and all her minions are doing what they want, she's being lied and finally can't even crush a single ship
I wouldn't believe it.
-
Wouldn't it kind of been more logical to have the majority of Big Mom's crew/children be female, just since she's the only female Yonkou and it would be the best time to make the spotlight for seriously strong fighters be on the women's side for the bulk of it? Bit of a wasted opportunity but there you go.
No it would have been awful. We don't need a crew of women just because the captain is one. We already have Smoothie, Tsuru and Hancock. It's already cringy like that. I'm not gonna ask for more. It's actually too much, I wish Tsuru and Smoothie had guys in their fleet.

Snack's defeat isn't really relevant in the grand scheme of things. So far it's only been mentioned to hype up Cracker and later Big Mom. It's had no effect on how the crew has operated.
With Big Mom now confronting the Straw Hats herself, there's not much chance left for Smoothie to play a big role for the villains' side. The goal of the Straw Hats is to get away from the Big Mom Pirates, not defeat them. Sure, the Firetanks and Vinsmokes might try getting their licks in after the cake is delivered…but Smoothie being defeated quickly, in comparison to Cracker and Katakuri taking hours to fight, would make her even more of a joke than she already is.

The title keeps making me think of
-
@Kaido:

We were specifically talking about the Sweet Commanders. Snack was one, and got taken out right before Luffy went into WCI (Urouge still had his bandages from the fight).
3/4 Sweet Commanders will be taken out within the course of 1-2 weeks if not less. That does not bode well for Smoothie.

Suuuure. Because destroying the ONE ship would surely be a good taste for the readers.

I didn't say all, just a majority. That could mean 3/5, not necessarily 3/4 which would be quite imbalanced. But still.

Actually it reminded me more of Rare games where they stick googly eyes on everything under the sun and call them baddies.

When you come back to the Discussion thread after a weekend away and see there's been a bunch of screenshots posted, you know there's been a great battle! grabs popcorn, goes off to read the trail of carnage
EDIT: Wow, just…so much petty whining! People complaining about silly characters, in ONE PIECE, seems like trolling at this point. People complaining that the BMP haven't slaughtered the Strawhats yet seems like trolling at this point. People saying that Jinbei could just grab everyone and they could get away through the water seems like trolling: "Hey guys, let's flee from a woman IN CONTROL OF A LIVING THUNDERCLOUD, by swimming through this here conductive-ass seawater!"..."Brilliant!" Big Mom'd Zeus their asses to kingdom come! X-D
If he takes them under where she can't see where they went, how's she going to find them to hit them with an accurate kill-shot? The amount of damage she would have to do to get to them with lethal enough damage, just by chance, and cover a wide enough range to do it would take out her entire fleet and, while she's in that mental state, sure, she doesn't give a rat's ass if she kills half her brood and their ships and crews, but Oda wouldn't let that happen any more than he would allow her to butcher the Straw Hats. And there's nothing stopping Jimbei from just jumping onto another ship after they go overboard so they can take control of the relatively unguarded (after Carrot got through with them) Big Mom crew ship(s) for a big game of 'keep away', which is really the point, they're just buying time, they don't need to beat her or even fight her. But it looks like they're going to stand up to her, and I respect that. But from a strategic standpoint it's probably not their best option. Actually, there would be even more merit to commandeering her other ships because then she'd be blasting her own ships and people and further crippling her forces so that any of them who would try to prevent the Straw Hat escape would be severely reduced. If Jimbei is maneuverable enough to play a rigged game of Whack a Mole with her, that could be entertaining and crucial to their escape plan.
But that's how feminist/minority/etc. representation is SUPPOSED to go. A great female character is one that could have easily been a guy with no effect on the plot, but was made a female simply to have different types of people in the story (except in the case where a story is written around the fact that a character is a woman, which is clearly not the case here).
Wait, why would a female character be great if she could have been replaced by a male with no difference to the plot? Wouldn't they have to be irreplaceable in order to be considered great? Or is that considered a limitation, being irreplaceable? I don't study literature so maybe I'm missing something.
-

Yeah okay, but were you really expecting anything ? It's a shonen manga after all. I mean, were you expecting Oda to go full feminist all of a sudden ?
And we've had interesting female characters nonetheless. There are plenty in this arc. Maybe they're not all fighters or strong fighters but they're here and there are way more than we had in any other arc. -
Friendly reminder to not expect spoilers anytime this week.

I won't, but apparently those hobos can face him.
God, it cannot be emphasized enough how much they look like a pack of hobos, right down to their captain. LOL! When Oda reintroduces them to the story, he's gonna HAVE to give them a visual redesign so that they don't look like the fodder of every crew we've seen for the last 900+ chapters.

Well you can't aim electricity through water–it goes everywhere, lightning fast. I was just pointing out that Jinbei taking them into the water makes them all sitting ducks: An Almighty Thunderbolt to the surface will take them all out (I didn't think about damage to her own forces, but Big Mom doesn't seem to be in the state of mind to think about it either). Granted, since electricity is the second most-harmless lethal substance in the One Piece World (the first, of course, being explosions*), the crew would probably still be fine, but they would be defeated, at the least. I can't imagine how they can possibly stand up to her at this point, at this range, but I guess that's part of the fun...

No, a great character should be written as a great character–then you make it male or female. Sometimes the characters identity is integral to the plot (think of the show "The Handmaids Tale" or the movie "Moonlight", where being a woman or being Black, respectively, drives the plot). But if it's not essential to the plot, then their identities should just exist without any special fanfare in the story. Otherwise you have women stopping the movie every 5 seconds to go "I'm a strong Independent woman that don't need no man" or Black characters going "What's live, shive-chucka!" or Asian characters speaking in terrible exaggerated broken English shudder
*EDIT: For the curious, the rankings are:
1st Place: Explosions
2nd Place: Electricity
3rd: Poison (!)
4th: Fire
And 5th: Bullets (somehow) -

I just figured there's no way Oda would be comfortable throwing around that level of indiscriminate collateral damage, especially with so many DF users who can be drowned if their ships blow up. But if Jimbei just jumps them into the water long enough to creep onto one of her other ships, it can be a more controlled chain reaction of her trying to get them, and she'd end up taking her own ships out one at a time in a more 'Luffy smashing the fighting deck on Baratie' way than a 'Advent of Thunder to obliterate Skypiea' way. That's why I compared it to Whack a Mole. If she just jumps from the Sunny to one of the other ships they climb onto, and tries to come down on them with her sword, it'll probably crack the vessel in half and force them to flee to the next ship but at least then she'll have further crippled her fleet than just having no steering wheels, but her crew will at least be able to cling to the floating, mostly-intact pieces to keep from drowning.

Okay, that makes more sense now. While it's possible for a great character to be linked to their identity, it should stand on its own so it doesn't have that limitation. Kind of like Ivankov, great character but it kind of depends on him being an okama to really get the most out of it.

1st Place: Explosions
2nd Place: Electricity
3rd: Poison (!)
4th: Fire
And 5th: Bullets (somehow)I know it's a joke ranking, but did electricity ever kill anyone? Enel genocided Birka, but it was through destroying an island itself and we don't know if he actually killed anyone. From what I recall electricity has 0% effectiveness contrary to explosions that have Hiluluk at least. Also, all jokes aside, bullets ares surprisingly lethal in OP world, causing substantial chunk of OP's important deaths, surely faring better than swords and alike for example.

Yes, bullets are the only thing that have actually killed, that's why it's so low on the ranking of being harmless lethal conditions. Thanks for the reminders about Hiluluk (the shame!) and swords. The reworked rankings would be:
1st: Lightning (has never even killed mooks, to our knowledge)
2nd: Poison (probably killed prison mooks in Impel Down, but we don't count them)
3rd: Horrific Blood loss (to account for bladed weapons. O hai Fisher Tiger)
4th: Explosions (Hiluluk says hello. Ranked lower because explosions might have killed scores of mooks during Marineford, but we'll never truly know)
5th: Bullets (only kills when dramatically convenient)Falling from great heights would probably deserve a good ranking if not for kuina.
Honorable Mention: Stairs (#neverforget)
To get back on topic a bit, could Monster Chopper AND Jinbei possibly redirect one of Big Mom's swings so that she doesn't end up killing everyone and everything with it? I think the point of emphasizing the (lack of) distance between Big Mom and the Strawhats last chapter was to show that they are gonna have to get themselves away from her themselves. There is physically not enough space for anyone to intervene without possibly damaging the ship.
Maybe a Germa 66 Black Bug to the chest MIGHT budge her…
-
There some spoilers on baidu, nani??
-
Why can’t we get the stickies right lately?
Enjoyed this chapter and what it means for Big Mom’s development as a threat. Nothing is ever as realistically scary as the unknown.
-
Falling from great heights would probably deserve a good ranking if not for kuina.
I think the danger of falls is actually grossly exaggerated. Considering the feats of strength and durability pretty much any combatant worth 50 million is capable of the force of their bodies colliding with the earth at terminal velocity should be easy to take.
-
Wouldn't the ground itself also factor in? Like falling on sand would probably be less harmful than falling on solid rock. Or metal.
-
Sorry to be that guy, but I'm assuming no chapter this week?
-
I really like that page of Zeus and Prometheus just flying over the sea, especially with the way Promotheus' reflection is drawn (just a nice little touch). Those goofballs.
Sanji's been surprisingly cool lately. I really liked him this chapter for upholding the whole noble cook thing. RIP Pudding.
Rebecca haters gonna get triggered when they open the chapter.
LOL I thought those were Nami and Robin on cover page…

However kaido wants to start the biggest war .maybe he gathered enough strength to surpass other yonko? Ps. Germa tech may was important for big mom just to keep up with kaido?

Inuarashi said that the tides would turn in their next battle when the Minks activated their trump card, which is probably Sulong. And dealing with a flying demon rabbit when you're on a bunch of ships is a tad different than having open warfare on land.

What's going on? Pudding does Amaterasu? What is Luffy trying to say?

Is her eye just for show or is there more to it? Did they ever mention that yet or is it still up in the air?

The three eye tribe is supposed to be able to see something related to either the Poneglyphs, Raftel, or something alike.

Huh, so it seems likely she'll tag along with them if they need her to help locate the one Kaido's hiding; maybe Carrot has more competition for next nakama than I thought.
