Chapter 889: An Unknown Mama
-
Really interesting that none have seen Mama go through something like this and she may deteriorate over time.
And the fact BMP think its sabotaged they may try to stop this cake or something.
Had a feeling there really wouldn't be a fight.
-
The translation on the first page should obviously have been, "rascally rabbit."
-
To think there was a time when people spoke of Oven and Daifuku in a similar breath to Katakuri. These guys are clowns.
-
Sweet!!
I'll check it out later since I have work tomorrow. :)
-
last chap of the year gives us a badass sanji
btw whats her name has two right hands on the cover (the tonts are awesome for becoming pirates, can't wait for theie antics)
-
It also looks like Smoothie is the closest subordinate to Big Mom's fighting style. Giant, physical, swordswoman who can suck away the "essence" of beings.
Also, I like that Oda is keeping the realist aspect at least in check. Carrot taking out a Veteran would have been bullshit, no matter how incompetent or weak they seem compared to the heavyweights.
-
I really like that page of Zeus and Prometheus just flying over the sea, especially with the way Promotheus' reflection is drawn (just a nice little touch). Those goofballs.
Sanji's been surprisingly cool lately. I really liked him this chapter for upholding the whole noble cook thing. RIP Pudding.
Rebecca haters gonna get triggered when they open the chapter.
-
Big Mom has such a sense of the dramatic
-
Also ends the dumb idea that Sanji would poison the cake.
-
Not a lot of action, but the writing certainly made up for it. It's good to see Sanji's philosophies on cooking come to light when a lot of his screentime lately has been focusing on girls. And Bege's expressions are once again flawless. Though I will say, it seems like Pudding has grown out of her dual-personality phase, so now she is pretty boring :(
It was interesting to see the limitations of Carrot's power. I wonder how that will apply to Wano…
The panel where Big Mom gets back into action was fucking stunning, and absolutely creepy.
Also lol at all the people that complained that Sanji had a bit of trouble against Daifuku's genie when it just leveled about a dozen ships with a single swing.
-

How the heck are they clowns? Because Daifuku didn't defeat Carrot really? Only some people thought they were on the same tier as Katakuri after they were revealed as triplets but nothing really proved that they were on the same tier, also Carrot's job was to disable the ships and avoid a fight with Daifuku which she did. Oda could have made those two fight but he didn't want to, nothing here proves that Daifuku is weak or anything seriously unless we see Daifuku in a actual battle the same with Oven don't judge on their powers and call them clowns.

That's pretty much nothing at this point in the story. Bastille was cutting down buildings with his clever.
-
wow last page.. i can feel the murderous intent..

I call them clowns because they're massively incompetent.
Perospero literally called him useless. These aren't my words alone.
-
That was scary from BM.
-
everyone has a weakness it seems big moms is her fighting potential is greatly reduced when separated from her homies (though she can still be a powerhouse).

She just been seeing Sanji be a badass for once, let her react over her love interest, at least the two are not both going gag over each other.

Really how? Because Daifuku failed to take down Carrot, Katakuri failed to kill Luffy does that make him incompetent? The only thing Daifuku made a mistake on was accidentally attacking his own ships, but if you go back to Oven and even Katakuri you'll know that when they get angry their anger will get the best of them.
-
Plus no offence to Carrot I really doubt she could have beaten him, though wonder if he will just have his genie carry him like fan art shows it doing.
-

Who says Sanji would have been able to easily deal with one of Bastille's swings?

Don't ask me. Ask Oda.
BMPs are a bunch of clowns as a whole. Katakuri is the only one who seems slightly competent, and even for him you can point out a ton of flaws.
Plus no offence to Carrot I really doubt she could have beaten him, though wonder if he will just have his genie carry him like fan art shows it doing.
If Carrot beat him….oh god. I would have hurled.
Thank God Oda kept it consistent.
-
With Carrot's speed, I could see it tbh. It'd depend on whether Daifuku has any sturdiness of his own. I mean, I doubt he's as fragile as Cracker, but yea.
That was scary from BM.
Right? Reading the spoiler is one thing, seeing it for yourself… Sheesh.
everyone has a weakness it seems big moms is her fighting potential is greatly reduced when separated from her homies (though she can still be a powerhouse).
Well yea, but we already knew that. The question is how much does her starvation weaken her?

I mean, Daifuku's fleet is a bunch of fodder, so we as readers don't care at all, but in-universe, it's pretty incompetent imo to help wipe out your fleet like that. Just because Daifuku is prone to anger doesn't really change that.
-
Okay so we knew that Leo is a commander in the Grand Fleet. Now we see he's formed his own pirate group and some of the members under him.
Glad to see fan-faves like Wicca there! Cue all the jokes saying we know who will be the navigator! ;)
Other's one the page are Kabu, Bian, Flapper, Bomba & Inhel.
Then there's this curly haired one in the background getting a coat from Rebecca & Viola. I think that's Chao.Interesting to note that Bomba & Inhel have facial scars now. I didn't remember Bomba having tattoos on his elbows but a quick look confirmed that yes he did previously have them.

Carrot was already starting to lose stamina while Daifuku wasn't and we still don't know what else Daifuku can do with his df, and it's possible that the genie will carry or fly him to safety.
-
At least its stated to be a double edged sword so I wonder how much it effects the Inu and Neko.
-
Hmm. I'm mixed on this one.
The story developments are pretty good. We got more detail on the Sulong transformation. The part with Sanji and Bege was good, and Bege saying that "even if we succeed they won't let us leave alive" tells me that Oda is aware of that complaint about the Cake plotline and has knows what he's going. And Unknown Mom is cool as hell.
But the choreography of the whole Daifuku fleet sequence was pretty bad. In the span of three panels, we go from The Genie swinging at Carrot, to Brook and Carrot meters away. Felt clunky to me. We don't even get to see Daifuku reacting to his failure.
Oh, and we didn't even get to see Brook putting that ship to sleep, he just tells us he did. Blah.
-
That transformation seems pretty short to be useful.
-
Next chapter (890), Whole Cake Island officially becomes the 2nd longest arc in One Piece, tied with Skypeia.

Thats why there will be a bit more then just the cake and beyond.

Oh yeah I agree that as readers the fodders in the fleet being taken out isn't really much of a big deal as compared to the in-universe, even if it was incompetent I can't blame him to much because when they do get angry their anger can get the best of them and they will attack both friends and foes. When Oven got angry he was about to sink Bege's ship even tho he know the cake to stop Big Mom was on that ship along with Pudding, and even when Katakuri got angry after Luffy interrupted his snack time he killed three of the chefs and when he went back to fight against Luffy he wasn't focusing to well because of how angry he was. Now compared to both Katakuri and Perospero both Daifuku and Oven aren't as calm as them, especially Daifuku who we've seen have a big temper, just because Daifuku failed to take down Carrrot doesn't make him incompetent imo since the whole point was to disable the ships not to fight but him accidentally attacking his own ships well that's kinda his fault for his anger getting the best of him and not acting calm so in that sense I will say he was incompetent in that part but nothing else here proves that he's weak or anything like that.

Incompetence and weakness go hand in hand.
Oven never threatened Sanji or Bege. Sanji was only worried he'd ruin the cake. That's why he called him an idiot for ruining BM's Cake which was going to help everyone.
-
Thats why there will be a bit more then just the cake and beyond.
Right. That's what I meant to say. It's just nice to see more evidance.

No complaints here. I want stay on Big Mom's wild ride.
-
I guess you could say with Oven now, that the cake was on Bege ship he could have easily thought something was up.
-
Ever since the Tamatebako, this arc lost its flair. Only things I'm looking forward to:
- BM's true fighting style (Guess she was a rival to Shanks/Mihawk)
-
Full scale power of Germa 66. This includes all Vinsmokes together, Judge, fleet/army, technology.
-
Luffy's last Gear 4 form.
-
Big Mom panting…so much for the old power-up routine. Never bought it thankfully.
Perospero and the other children being confused about whether or not to let the Cake pass into Big MOm's mouth. Lovely. Oda setting up all sorts of messy shenanigans for later.
Su Long form is pretty powerful in itself but is basically a stamina and life-span burner it looks like. Pretty strong limiter. It wouldn't do if Neko and Inu can just simply ROFLSTOMP Jack later on in Wano under the full moon.
But Carrot and Brook teaming up to immobilise Daifuku's fleet…and Brook carrying her off like a gentleman. Aww... And Chopper referring to her as his little sister...double awww -
-
I guess he talking about how Luffy will one up Katakuri and beat him.

The spoilers made it sound like Carrot and Daifuku at least had some clash but nope it was just her avoiding Daifuku and disabling the other ships, it was cool to see the genie again and that one attack from the genie's halberd was strong enough cut down half of the fleet so that was pretty cool. I did kinda wish we could see more from the genie because I'm pretty sure it could can do more than just attack with his halberd, I know some people think Carrot could have defeated Daifuku but I doubt that. Carrot was already starting to lose her stamina while Daifuku wasn't and we still don't know what else Daifuku can do, even they actually did battle I don't think Carrot would have won but she wouldn't go down that easily as well and she would have at least put up a great fight. Also that one panel of thin Big Mom with her hair on flames via Prometheus holding Napoleon and riding on Zeus damn she looks scary, also it seems that Napoleon can change the size and shape of his blade and even move his face from the jolly roger on the bicorne to the blade itself.
-
Don't forget that Kid managed to sink some of Big Mom's ships. Doing a bit of damage to a fleet isn't going to matter in the long run, especially in this situation.
@Kai:

What could Oven have done against them? Bege literally unleashed a hit-and-run and so did Sanji but with his identity masked. Oven's goal was to get Chiffon and Sanji and Bege's goal was to get her back, not to defeat him.
-
Isn't Daifuku the 3rd son, not the 26th?

Luffy's last Gear 4 form.
I wouldn't say lost it's "flair" still my second fav arc of new world/timeskip. I do think the constant running and rehashing of the same things do drag the pacing, especially luffy fighting mochi dude again and again. And we see the same thing again and again (with that fight). It's not subtle in telling us "luffy has to beat this guy to grow" yes we know, don't beat us over the head with it though.
-
@Kaido:
Bavarois is the 26th.
That was confusing, since the text "26th son" was exactly on Daifuku's panel
-
Daifuku couldn't resit rubbing himself once he saw Carrot in her sulong form and taking out those fodders lol.
-
I don’t normally say this, but I feel like this whole chapter could’ve easily been condensed into 5 pages. Nothing really happened
-
Theory: The Strawhats talk her into waiting for the cake that's on the way. We cut back to Luffy and Katakuri, when that fight ends the cake arrives on Bege's ship.
I will be quoting this post in the future if the theory is correct. Along with any nay-sayers :ninja:
-
I'm a little bit disappointed that we didn't see more from the genie we know the genie can do more than just attack with his halberd, even tho it seems that Daifuku's fleet is being swept away their probably still safe as none of the ships are sinking except for those that Daifuku cut down earlier. Also there is still that possibility that the genie can somehow carry Daifuku, I do hope that's not it for Daifuku and I'm hoping we will see him again in the next chapter because I really want to see what else the genie can do besides just attacking with his halberd.
-
@Kai:
To think there was a time when people spoke of Oven and Daifuku in a similar breath to Katakuri. These guys are clowns.
And what makes you think Katakuri is not a clown? He's so full of himself and was shocked when his jelly bean get dodged by a cook, struggled for hours to kill one pirate despite his claims and the billion beli undefeated pirate that thought a pile of Moochi is enough to defeat a 500M beli pirate.
They are clowns because they underestimate their enemy.
