I actually (and finally) got to try out Odyssey at Gamestop today. Mario controls well, although I thought rolling was a seperate button; it seems you have to hold the input after you long jump? So glad to have triple jumps, long jumps, and side jumps all back again :)
Also, it seems X and Y use Cappy, while A and B make Mario jump.
lol.

I wonder if he realized that the game he was kickstarting had already been released.

lol.

You fucking naive fool.
Wait, what's the true sequel to Super Mario RPG?
Paper Mario. Its original title was Super Mario RPG 2.
Paper Mario. Its original title was Super Mario RPG 2.
I mean, the working title for Dead or Alive: Beach Volleyball could have been Super Mario RPG 2 and it wouldn't have made it a true sequel [though, now that I think about it, wouldn't that have been great?].
Say what you want about the Paper Mario series–in my case, meh–but think the point is fair that there's not been a similarly written or executed game or even in that same universe (have Mallow and Geno showed up in any non-cameo role that I don't know about? I'd assume not, since Square made the first game and all). Even then, think Superstar Saga is a closer approximation than whatever happened with Paper Mario.
That said, HAHAHAHA, why did this guy think this Kickstarter would work?
Okay probably just an Easter egg but super fucking awesome
!
! but seriously will they have other kingdoms as Easter eggs too? Like bean bean kingdom (mario and luigi super star saga) or Rouge town (paper mario and the thousand year door),Yoshi's island (Yoshi games) D.K island (donkey kong games), random wario game places, like diamond city and syrup island (from wario games)
Also again can't wait to see Broodals get more time to shine, whether it's in mario kart, mario party, or maybe even smash bros. Idk why I like these guys so much but I really do

!
! This all but confirms the ability to travel to Peach's Castle, and the Mushroom Kingdom is on the map. So the same should go for Isle Delfino.
! However, I think you are getting ahead of yourself by bringing up those locations from spin-off series. The reason why Peach's Castle and Isle Delfino are in the game is likely because they are from previous 3D open-world Mario games like Odyssey. A lot of the features in Odyssey gameplay and level-wise are straight-up inspired by those games, so it makes sense to recreate levels from them. Nintendo themselves have recognized and hyped up Odyssey being similar to Super Mario 64 and Sunshine by releasing this timeline:
!
! But maybe there might be a Yoshi or even Wario reference somewhere if New Donk City has so many easter egg references to the Donkey Kong series. I wouldn't expect full levels straight from those games though.

! question, after this game comes out how can they keep adding to mario's world, once it's already been completed. I mean they can't show a whole world map and then in the next game say things like, Oh no these are new undiscovered areas that didn't exist before right? in basically kills off there chance to keep making more games unless they just keep using the same areas and levels….. which would ruin it

Oh, as an aside - finally found out the identity of the singer/Pauline's VA. Kate Higgins (Davis). She voices Lissa in Fire Emblem, and loads of other anime/game credits.

Have you never played the first two Paper Marios or what the heck lol. Yeah, I'm gonna go with that because goddamn this post is bewildering.
Hey, everybody, let me write an extended response to Monkey King so that we can engage in a civil and hahahahahahahah no.

RPGs can be numbered and not necessarily connected by story or main characters. Just look at Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. When you think about it, it literally is a 2nd RPG starring Mario, so it's as close as we're ever likely going to get, Geno or no Geno.
The battle system of Paper Mario, like its predecessor's, is designed around the Timed Hits mechanic. The town and dungeon areas have new mechanics for Mario to exploit (based around the new art style), but the core gameplay remains the same.
The games are different, but it's like comparing Super Mario Bros to Super Mario Bros 3: the two have far more similarities than differences.

To me, it's more like SMB to SMB2, except in this case the series thereafter followed the pattern established by the second. Definitely shared core gameplay, but abandons quite a bit of the first–like almost all of the non-SMB characters, the larger party mechanics replaced with partners, stripped-down/simplified combat, the switch to 2.5D--which then became the base for the games that followed. But I'm pretty much quibbling over matters of degree here, so, eh. You're right.
On the Timed Hits point, I was just thinking about that the other day. Was that the first turn-based RPG to really incorporate something like that [as well as initiating combat through punches or jumps on the larger map]? Only thing I could think of was something to the effect of Sabin's blitzes in FFVI, but that was one character and one mechanic out of over a dozen.

All of the characters are SMB characters, I really don't understand this.
Are you saying that Geno and Mallow are special because they're not based around a pre-existing species or enemy? Because that's a really minimal difference.
And one that isn't even true as a difference going into Thousand Year Door, where of your party both Vivian and Flurry are in that same mold.
And that's not even going into bosses and NPCs. Yeah the first Paper Mario is heavily based around the traditional Mario world of the time, but again Thousand Year Door…no. In fact it's even less so than RPG was.
he larger party mechanics replaced with partners,
This is true, but the party mechanics of RPG are so incredibly basic that it really doesn't end up feeling all that dramatic a difference. Both games are insanely simple RPGs where mechanics really don't play a huge role.
stripped-down/simplified combat
So both games here.
the switch to 2.5D–which then became the base for the games that followed
Both actual Paper Mario RPG games are 3D games full stop. Especially the first. Which yes is a difference, but stuff like calling them 2.5D is making me think again you haven't played them. Or we have different ideas of what 2.5 D means, because I'm thinking Yoshi's Story or New Super Mario Bros.
In both RPG and the two Paper RPGs, you explore a 3D plane. One using the classic SNES top down slant with 2D graphics, the other in 3D with a fixed camera.

And that isn't even true in the first one. The "paper" graphical style just started out as that, a style. In Thousand Year Door they started playing with it a bit, before the whole series stopped really being RPG based and drowned itself in "LOL PAPER" crap concepts.
No one ever gave a fuck about "LOL PAPER", the style was cool because it had a classic SNES pixel art feel. But I guess the game developers never realized this and are dumb.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/10/17/sony-to-publish-nintendo-switch-games-under-new-label-unties
Sony is going to publish Switch games via Unties
That's a misleading summary/headline.
Basically Sony just opened a small publisher whose intent is to support indie efforts regardless of what platform they go to. It's not a matter of them investing in the switch as much as it is them investing in the indie market.
So ever since the Switch launch, I've heard people constantly saying they'd wait until a Mario bundle came out before buying one.
Well, now there finally is one, and it's shit-tastic. What is with these bundles that cost MORE than just buying things separately? "Oh yes Mr. Nintendo sir, I'm totally okay with my physical bundle having a digital download code for the game, and I SO want that barebones carrying case; it's totally worth the extra money!"
Whatever happened to bundles just including the game for free? Or at least selling at a slight discount as a way to move units and hook players? I guess Scrooge McTendo realized it can get away with anything now, but at least they could have avoided the insult of making people pay EXTRA.
It's extra cheeky when so much of the price of a game includes the whole cost of production and shipping, and they still feel the need to charge you the ENTIRE cost of the game in the bundle despite the fact they don't even give you the physical copy of the game.
It is literally free for them to make download codes for a game. But instead of taking that into account and having the bundle cheaper to hook people into buying a console, they prefer to take advantage of the consumer's good will and charge more.
It's getting consistently harder and harder to not see or hear about bullshit business practices from Nintendo, which is sad because it sours any moments where they might have clean designs or innovation ideas.
Yeah wow… at bare minimum it should be the same price as buying the system + game.... that way they can say the cheapie case that comes with it is an extra of some kind....
As it stands, there's no difference cost wise between buying the system, a digital copy of SMO, and any $20 carrying case you want...... Is it convenience? Do they think just packaging it all in one convenient box is enough to justify a bundle?
I honestly think they just do it because the NES and SNES classic situations helped them realize they can really just do anything, and if slapped with the "low supply" sticker it'll sell anyway.

I think Iwata was the main force keeping the greedy investors at bay.
I finally got to hold a pair of JoyCons at a kiosk, and all I can say is, man are they tiny…

Lol this is exactly went I through. Even went to the physical Nintendo store in NYC and asked an employee "what's up with that?"
He didn't have an answer except that the carrying case is really nice or something. But I dislike digital downloads over discs anyway, so moot point.
So I bought a Switch at Gamestop and it's sitting in the box until Mario comes out :P
I've been skeptical of Nintendo's relationship with its fans ever since Twilight Princess was pushed to a Wii launch title. Judging from them doing the same thing with BotW, seems pretty cynically strategic.
I sensed problems during the Wii U era when we were asked to rebuy the same games on the 3ds/Wii u virtual console and only a few eshop games offered crossbuy at a time when the market leader (sony) offered crossbuy for nearly every game.
There was also the time Nintendo spent real money to produce an animated Fuck You to Mother fans.
@CCC:

I'm pretty sure it's just official one with an Odyssey design. And the official ones are the most simple, plain thing ever. It literally just holds the Switch in place. I bought a 3rd party one for less, which is only slightly larger but includes things like pockets for extra Joycons/cables and little slots on a flap that hold games and SD cards.

I'd take it out and test it ASAP just in case. It's almost definitely less of a hassle to return something to Gamestop than it is to send a broken unit to Nintendo and hope they don't blame you.
Besides whatever updates and dumb stuff modern consoles have to do.

Xenoblade 2, a couple of lvl24 enemies while you are 20.
Most interesting thing about that video is they brought back fall damage.
Got myself a switch this week and borrowed zelda from a friend.
It's weird… I really want to enjoy this game, but everytime I boot it up I get bored. I've never felt like this with a zelda game before, not even with Skyward Sword (the first and only zelda that I dropped).
The world is way too large and too empty. There are a few monsters sprinkled here and there, but other than that it's just walking and climbing non stop.
Someone told me that they had the same feeling at first, but that the game got better once they unloked all towers, so I tried to do that. While playing this morning, I set a target in the map for the closest tower and started going there. Walked through another empty path and just had a few mountains to climb. After several minutes, when I was almost at the top, it started raining and I couldn't continue. My only options were to:
a) Go somewhere else
b) Wait for the rain to stop
I didn't want to waste the effort it took me to get up there, so I just left the switch there and picked my phone to do something else while I waited for the rain to stop. After a few minutes I realized that that was stupid and turned off the switch.
Up until last week, I had heard nothing but praise for this game, so I can only think that I must be doing something very wrong. Did I miss something early in the game that could be making my experience so different?
To show where I am in the game, here's a map screenshot I took yesterday:

You didn't miss anything. The game is disgustingly over-praised and I agree it's not actually a Zelda game. I had an overall positive experience despite finding it very flawed, but if the random exploration with little tangible payoff isn't something you enjoy, it just might not be for you. And yeah fuck rain.
That's odd. The towers were designed to be umbrella like so that you could climb them even while it's raining.
But yes, what Foolio said. Enjoying the game means enjoying random expression and discovering little things that make you go 'woah cool' even if they don't really do anything to the story.
That feeling sustained me for about a couple of weeks, but after finding all the shrines, getting and upgrading all the costumes, and finishing the main story, there's not much left to keep me interested in the game.
The journey there was tons of fun though.

Not at all. Rain affects you even when climbing the towers.
Not at all. Rain affects you even when climbing the towers.
That simply wasn't my experience at all.
Having the game myself, I decided to verify this.
At Dueling Peaks tower, while it was raining, I decided to climb the tower.
No slippage occurred.
I only tried this with one tower, so maybe there's a tower somewhere that gets slippery in the rain, but I just don't think they'd do that.

The game went downhill for me after I found and activated every tower. I finished the four dungeons and went to Hyrule Castle to confront Gannon… who was a complete pushover.
After that the main sidequest is collecting 900 pieces of shit, I was never seriously going to do that.
I wasn't climbing the tower itself when it started raining, but the rocky mountains that the tower was on.

So those 4 dungeons are all there is? I finished one of them, but I thought some other kind of dungeon would show up after those.

There are 120 mini dungeons that reward you with orbs. Aside from those, that's the entire game.
Majora's Mask also had only 4 dungeons.
I wasn't climbing the tower itself when it started raining, but the rocky mountains that the tower was on.
So those 4 dungeons are all there is? I finished one of them, but I thought some other kind of dungeon would show up after those.
Ah, that explains it. That would be a really bad time for rain.
Yeah, there are four main dungeons, but to be honest, I had more fun finding and solving the shrines.
A lot of shrines act as rewards for exploring the world around you. I remember one of my favorite shrines is:
! While exploring Faron woods, I wanted to scale a cliff but it was raining heavily. Then I noticed there was a waterfall nearby, and immediately wondered if I could just Cryonis my way up the cliff (this was before I had Zora armor).
After several minutes of climbing Cryonis blocks, I made it to the top, and I noticed a faint accordion sound playing in the distance. This would be my first encounter with Kass, and it felt so awesome because I was rewarded with a shrine simply due to random curiosity.
! >! To uncover the shrine, I equipped a metal weapon and just let the lightning hit me (using up a fairy in the process), because for whatever reason, it hasn't crossed my mind that you could just leave a metal weapon on the ground.
That said, some of the shrines do feel a little lackluster (I'm looking at you, Test of Strength shrines…). If exploration and discovery isn't your thing, then I can see the game being kinda boring.
@Bond:
If exploration and discovery isn't your thing, then I can see the game being kinda boring.
Or even if discovery is your thing. It's kind of a sparse world.
Think for me the problem was front-loading all the stuff that makes an impact on problem-solving. It's neat that you theoretically can do most of what the game has to offer with the tools given to you at the beginning, but it makes everything…same-y.
Don't think it's a terrible game, but the breathless "GotY, perhaps GotALLTIME" stuff is way out of line.
Majora's Mask also had only 4 dungeons.
Really dude? First of all, MM needed more dungeons too. But that aside, those are fulled-fledged Zelda dungeons, also tied to Great Fairy rewards. Literally incomparable to the 20-minute generic affairs that are the Divine Beasts. The Gerudo Hideout is more of a dungeon than a Divine Beast. Ikana Castle is more of a dungeon than a Divine Beast. The two Skulltula houses are more of a dungeon than the Divine Beasts.
And if you're going to go and make that comparison, MM also has a much smaller map packed with much more content. In BotW you explore and find Korok Seeds or generic orbs from mostly-generic shrines. MM has a truly living world with many ways of making you feel rewarded through the sidequests and all the masks etc.
I still haven't played very far, thanks to all of the other games out right now. One day I do want to get back to it and try to at least beat the main stuff.
