I really like how Illegals adds to the original story, going further into the world workings and how its society and hero community works, plus expanding the characters like Ingenium and not-Stain. But I wish it would move a bit with its own plot… 14 chapters in and basically the only development we had in the drugs plot was meeting the bee girl.

Like the idea of C.C. being Stain's debut kill but it might be too early in the timeline.
Our first named US hero is a jackass, of course. I'm curious how high his rank was, "top-ranking" could mean almost anything.@.access:

Agreed. I wanna learn more about the main characters too. We know next to nothing about Knuckleduster and Pop Step. Makes me wonder if the creators are spinning their wheels on purpose, waiting for Hirokoshi to introduce a character they need, reach a certain plot point, or finish the Trigger/Overhaul arc in the main series.
At least the series is now bi-monthly.

@Count:
More likely soap given how the moment was played up for laughs. And acid in somebody's eyes would be a bit too morbid for a hero to get away with (which makes me wonder how Ashido's powers are going to be handled if we ever see her in the field).
Rereading all the discussion thread, and I figure he'll have her control the corrosiveness of it, if she cajt already althogh he has played fast and loose with it so far, she mostly uses it for speed in sliding around, she hasnt really had to fight someone with it

OK, finally caught up on Illegals. Haven't read the last three updates.
…When is Pop Step going to get a character that doesn't revolve around "wants Koichi's babies?"
I want to like her. I want her to be something other than fanservice. I want her to be relevant to the plot in ways that doesn't focus on her "plot".
Having a fanservicey character isn't always bad as long as they have depth to balance out the sexy, but…she's so awful. It doesn't help that as the "girl" of the group, she's useless in a fight and thus relegated to reconnaissance and directing people to safety.
-
It's not like Pop Step's quirk is efficient in battle.

It's not like Pop Step's quirk is efficient in battle.
And giving her that quirk was the author's decision.
-
It's not like Pop Step's quirk is efficient in battle.
Even if you cut the author slack for coming up with a non-offensive Quirk, she could have still gotten a weapon to compensate akin to Aizawa's bandages complementing his Quirk Erasure or Stain's blades in accordance with Bloodcurdle. Or she goes all Super Mario on any fools that cross her.

Isn't this an important position to have either way? She's the one who coordinates where the two guys go, based on what she sees from above. I'm sure they can expand this role. Besides, we've only had like, 13 chapters, many of which barely focused on the main group. She'll get her time to shine, perhaps once they get to the meat of the first arc.

I still hope the league manages to snatch her. So a quirk that rewinds things to a state before quirks talk about broken. And the girls appeared but had their fight totally side screened what a let down.

! Anyone else wishing the girls had stayed off screen ? I hope they still have a role to play beyond this …
-
It seems we celebrated too early… well, the fight should be over in 1 or 2 chapters, I will wait until then to draw any final conclusion.
Still, very good to see Eri saving herself even if she wasn't even doing it consciously. The fact her power is rewinding pretty much assures us Mirio is getting his powers back once she learn how to control her quirk properly but I hope that's something that only happens in the last chapter (I can see Eri pursuing the hero career herself).
Anyways, she will probably be in trouble for an arc more since Compress' clone is there. -
Aside from the fake hope of the girls showing up and doing something being dashed, there's just something really wrong structurally when during an intense climax of a rescue arc, the author feels he has to shove in all this exposition to explain the motivations of the victim. This is stuff that should have been established beforehand so that the final scenes could be carried on with visuals and simple dialogue alone. Imagine if in Enies Lobby, Robin's whole backstory was shoved in just as she was saved by Franky.

I've been liking this arc, but I really wasn't a fan of this chapter. It just didn't flow well for me, and everything happened way too fast. I like the idea of Eri awakening to her quirk and that helps out in some way, but it felt rushed and forced in a way. In the end, it fwas like two or three chapters worth of content was crammed into one instead, where a chapter dedicated to the outside fight would've been nice, then have a chapter focused on Eri which ended with how this chapter ended.
-
This whole arc narration seems a lot like HunterxHunter, I wonder who will narrate this in the anime, maybe Deku? Still I like that at the end Eri was able to save herself a little bit, it gives deep to the character aside from being a kid in danger, how she was willing to sacrifice herself for other in the previous chapters was also great.
And I hope that the girls still do something else, I mean, the combo was cool and all, but their fight never felt dangerous compared to the other ones and the author almost didn´t show anything of it. I liked how Toga manipulated the state of the fight with Overhaul though.
-
Yah, the action and jumping around in time is poorly paced. Make the fake deku show up before we knew were deku was, explain eri's deal, show the fight with the thug (even if I think that the dragon submission was enough to stop him if they already knew his quirk).
The arc has been flowing strangely since the beginning.

can't say i like the HxH style of narrative, since i'm more of a "show don't tell" kind of guy..but as of now, it hasn't yet reached the extremes of HxH..so it's fine
I suppose that since the girl can rewind powers too..she can probably rewind lemillion's powers back
i wonder though..what nighteye saw exactly? did he saw this future and something terrible will still happen,or he wasn't able to predict the interference of the league of villains? or maybe he just stopped looking before the interference happened?

He's been breaking action sequences like that a lot in this arc.
New healer joins the good guys then? She's like Orihime.

Maybe Hori doesn´t want the fans to get the wrong idea like lots of people did with Deku´s 1 Million % Smash and that´s why he is overexplaining things…
And I think that the Toga/Deku would have worked better if they showed us the girls fight some chapters before and a shadow figure appeared screaming Uraraka, we wouldn´t know who it was and it would have served as foreshadowing.
-
I am a big fan of this style of HxH-like narration, so I really like Horikoshi is starting to use it (specially since he doesn't overdo it like Togashi). I'm all for it.
But that aside I agree the structure is off sometimes this arc. Going back in time to see how the girls got there seemed very important at first because it seemed like it was going to lead to something relevant happening, but no. The conclusion was just what we got in the last chapter and, with that, the whole scene ended up feeling like forced there because Horikoshi was trying to justify himself for keeping the girls absent this whole time.
Plus, if the scene was supposed to make up for their absence, it did a terrible job. Finding out the whole group was indeed just struggling against a single of the 8 Trash guys this whole time just because he got a power up - when Nejire alone should be easily enough to take care of him judging by her peers (Suneater defeated 3 on his own and Lemillion 2 - admittedly they were not powered up, but still) -, actually made them look bad.
-
Sun eater might have permanent physical damage. She was struggling, but was nowhere near full power, back against the wall as mirio or sun eater were. And the dragon lady had it under control.
-

well the author it's at his very first true long running series, since before that all he has done are one shots or very short running series (don't know if they were designed to be short,or they got canceled), so it's early to know if he was doing this specifically for this arc or if he is just now having a bit more freedom from the usual shonen formula to express himself…especially since now the series is gaining traction in both japan and the US, and this might have gave him a bit more bartering power with his editor and the higher ups at jump.
-
To be fair with the girls, they were fighting against a dude that grows stronger while making their opponents weaker, so it´s normal that in such scenario they couldn´t show her full power and struggled a little. Plague Bane´s power is similar to Ban´s power from Nanatsu no Taizai, aside from the getting bigger part.
-
This chapter was quite awkward to read. It was difficult to follow the action of where Chisaki was and who the real Deku was yelling at to protect Nighteye, although I assume it was the girls. I wasn't bothered with interpreting how out of place fake Deku was. I'm not sure why anybody else seems to be confused about that, I thought it was obviously Toga given the time placement. But if Toga can only transform into Deku for that single instance, that feels like a really underwhelming result of that twist. Where did Compress' clone even hide? Chisaki only got Toga and Twice, right? Unless Twice can summon clones wherever he is and not in proximity of the original. Which is even more overpowered. Twice and Toga trying to capture Eri by using their Quirks for deception would be much cooler.
If the girls couldn't get their own full fight in this arc, they never will unless they team-up with a guy or maybe fight against other females. I think we have enough evidence at this point to make that unfortunate assertion, so I'm just calling it here so I won't be disappointed. I really need to stop getting my hopes up for female representation in shonen, and I knew something was fishy ever since we never saw how Ochako and Tsuyu got their internship. I still remember giving Horikoshi praise for Ochako's fight against Bakugo in the Sports Festival even if she lost lol. And I just knew that "Bane's" Quirk wasn't super strength. We can't have pretty faces getting brutalized like what the guys endure after all. Although I suppose some credit can be given only for not making him similar to Rappa, I guess.
Huh? The villains just… dug their way out? When they're in a labyrinth and none of them have any Quirks relating to tunneling, permeability, or super strength? No shovels? Not even a prison spoon? ...Okay. And I thought that Twice said he could only make two copies, right? He made ones of Rappa and Toga earlier in the arc, but a copy of Compress is here. Unless that means he can make two copies of each different person, and even with the stamina decrease, that's still a bit overpowered for my taste when I think of the possibilities, assuming I am correct.
"Plus Chaos"? That totally needs to become the League of Villains' catchphrase. It's so wonderfully cheesy.
Eri's flashback almost came out of nowhere. So her Quirk is rewinding things like Josuke Higashikata's Crazy Diamond. That is cool. I was worried that Horikoshi would throw a random extra ability to reverse Quirk Factors, but this a premise that can work for proving Overhaul wrong. I guess. Still too convenient to reveal at the last minute right before she saves the day. That could have been hinted at more instead of only having Eri's Quirk modified into bullets that make her Quirk impossible to figure out aside from nullifying Quirks. But I will still take it. But wait... if she can reverse things then does that mean Mirio's getting his Quirk back? Boo, boo I say. Not a fan. Not at all. Although maybe Horikoshi will still have the Quirk erasure be permanent just because. I hope so.
Overall, the chapter was mediocre. I wouldn't exactly call it bad, but it was certainly disappointing on more than one front.

As you said, his limit is 2 clones at a time and he already had two before, so Compress' clone was made after that.
As for how they dug their way out, that's what Compress was for: he kept compressing parts of the ground… it worked as digging.

This is the conclusion I am so reluctantly getting. I so wanted this manga to not go that way, but sadly I agree with all you said. At this point it's very safe to assume this manga will be just another shonen when it comes to female representation. We may still got one or two scenes at some point later, like Sakura x Sasori, but that will be all.

I'm confused as to what the expectations were for the girls. They crashed through the ceiling with Bane last week, all that was left is to explain how that happened. Not like anybody can touch Overhaul to begin with, Hori had to conjure up Eri's power for that alone.
The chapter definitively felt jumbled though, doesn't help that it's a slangstream translation, I'll reserve my judgement until VIZ is out. About Eri, I hope her power doesn't end up giving Mirio his powers back or healing Nighteye. Especially Nighteye, because I think his power is the biggest mistake Hori made and I want it gone. -

Oh, I get it. That isn't as overpowered as I thought. But it bothers me in the sense of plot convenience though. Since what is stopping him from spawning Mr. Compress for cheap easy captures, or Shigaraki for single contact one touch kills, Dabi for giant fire bursts, or Blackmist for easy portal access (if Blackmist can even get measured accurately lol). It is much more exciting and engrossing for any arc that Twice is in to focus on him only being able to clone the chess pieces that are on his side, or maybe incapacitated enemies as well. Otherwise, his Quirk feels like it's used for quick plot convenient shortcuts we can never really predict from any actual build-up.
Maybe he cloned Toga-Deku before her transformation ended and he's lurking in the shadows as a contingency.
As for how they dug their way out, that's what Compress was for: he kept compressing parts of the ground… it worked as digging.
We both know how dumb that sounds whether it's true or not. Sure, he stored a piece of Shouto's ice, but-Actually, how much stuff can he store? If there is no limit, that's another overpowered ability, unless, he kept dumping pieces of the earth elsewhere before taking out more.

What if Bakugo versus Ochako WAS the once in a lifetime Sakura and Chiyo versus Sasori fight of this series lol?

Keep in mind that Lemillion and Sun Eater got their own flashbacks either in full or scattered snippets that made their relationship meaningful, while Nejire is a random high school classmate who became friends with them because their Quirks are popular. We know almost nothing about Ryukyu either while Fatgum and even Aizawa have gotten more focus.
It's all quite underwhelming, to say the least. And he should have built-up Eri's power instead of pulling out of thin air in the very same chapter she saves the day.
-
I've been having more and more trouble just following what's going on in this series. Shame, since it's pleasantly straightforward in the more school-y arcs.
Feels a bit to me like Horikoshi doesn't really know exactly what he wants to do with the larger world of the series.
-
What I understood from this chapter (after reading a comment on reddit) is that Eri's quirk just let her rewind people conditions; the bullets rewind a person's quirk before it manifested. She can't bring Mirio's quirk back because that would be fast-fowarding someone's state.
But she'll probably save Nighteye.

Yeah, that is a valid explanation for why that can't work, I suppose.

True, but that's what I meant, at the climax of this arc Hori wasn't going to put much attention to the girls no matter what. A lot of these shortcomings build on some of the other mistakes from this arc, I wasn't exactly happy with some of the other fights as well. I appreciate a lot of the ideas and development some characters got, but this whole thing is just very poorly structured.
It's always difficult to manage a lot of characters, this is something even One Piece is failing at right now (for me at least), but it gets even more difficult when you try to do a fast chase while cramming in development for characters who have been introduced just now.
There should've been a proper mini arc for Mirio, Suneater and Nejire before all this to show them beyond their most surface-level qualities. Merge Kirishima's flashback with his fight against the spike guy and ditch the whole Rock Lock bit and everything related to Nighteyes quirk. With that done, focus more on the villains and some other neglected characters. There really isn't any need to focus too much on characters like Fatgum and Ryuku, since the backbone of this story are the young heroes to begin with. They should be there to make the operation more believable so that not just some kids alone take out the yakuza by themselves, but lean on the big three the most since they are very competent to begin with. -

Nah, both Oumagadoki Zoo and Sensei no Bulge were cancelled, in fact, the second one was cancelled so fast that Horikoshi thought of abandoning the mangaka´s career.
The series has been so good in a costant way until this arc that I forgot that Hori never had a long series before this, well, not at all arcs can be good after all, so it´s not really a problem. The thing with the girls actually is, but I still have hope that the female characters will have time to shine, there are various options:
-Uraraka and Tsuyu actually having a good fight, where they get hurt and keep going
-A Nejire´s flashback and a good fight with her
-Shimura Nana´s flashback and his fight with AFO, it can be really cool even if she dies at the end of it
-Ashido and Kirishima fighting together against the giant villain from that flashblack
-The third ranked hero (now second ranked) being a female character and good role model to the girlsSeriously, Hori has the talent for making all her female characters likeable, don´t giving them time to shine outside cute scenes and fanservice one is such a waste.
-
With all the dudes messed up good now, there's still a chance girls will be left to defend them from some new development on their own.
Not that I expect it.
-
Why did the villain alliance start digging a hole anyway?
-
This chapter was a mess action-wise. Skipping over Hadou's fight (even though it's presumably static, but that's by design) and keeping Tsuyu and Ochako on the sideline is bad enough but I had trouble figuring out what was happening in the second half of the chapter. Just cluttered and messy art :(
Though people suddenly hating on this arc because of a messy chapter are definitely wrong. Yes, the girls have been frustratingly left out and the villains could use a tricksier plan, but by and large the arc has been pretty dang good. The fights have been excellent and emotional, the villain is legitimately terrifying, and the stakes feel real. One ugly chapter doesn't change that.
Why did the villain alliance start digging a hole anyway?
They wanted backup to keep Chisaki occupied. It also gives them their own way out.

Possibly to reduce the structural integrity as well.

Imagine if in Enies Lobby, Robin's whole backstory was shoved in just as she was saved by Franky.
It would be impossible to explain those motivations without revealing what Eri's Quirk was. Otherwise, Eri escaping from Overhaul's grasp by rewinding his fusion would be easy to see coming. The most appropriate way to reveal such a game-changer power would be if it was used to… well... change the game.
It would be like if Nico Robin's backstory was revealed all the way back in Whiskey Peak. Or having Law's backstory revealed back in Punk Hazard. The present needs to build context before the past can be explored.
-
Though people suddenly hating on this arc because of a messy chapter are definitely wrong.
What if we were already "hating" on it? I can't speak for others, but this arc has felt very meh to me, especially after Mirio's fight had ended. Goes without saying that this chapter did very little to change that.
-

That's on you then. Just seems to me that more people are being more critical of the arc as a whole just based on this chapter when just a few chapters ago we were praising how invested we are in Mirio.
-
First, I gotta agree on this overall feeling that fights are still this manga's weak(est) point. For every action bit that gives me hope, 2 more appear to remind me that no, Horikoshi still can't bring his A game during "dynamic" scenes, and if "weird" powers are involved it's like he just can't make it work, visually speaking.
I'm disappointed because up till now, the fight scenes lacked impact, yes, but they weren't that hard to follow. The past 3-4 chapters though, action wise, are a HOT MESS. It doesn't help that I can't fully understand how Overhaul's ability works, and I have this feeling that Horikoshi didn't quite know how to translate these abilities into exciting action either.
And, yeah, I also feel this messiness is spreading into the very structure of the arc. And this newfound penchant for nonstop narration, even at times where it completely disrupts a scene's flow and sense of tension? Yeah, not a fan.
And finally, I personally add as a negative the fact that the bits with Twice and Toga are doing nothing for me. Like, nothing. At all. Maybe it's slangstream's translations, maybe it's the fact that I don't particularly like them, but everytime they appear I just get slightly confused as to what they're saying/doing and, more importantly, REALLY adding to the arc.
Loved Suneater, Mirio and Red Riot/Fat Gum's chapters, but overall this arc is, imho, not this manga's best. Not by a long shot. So far, at least. . .
-

Well I can't speak for here specifically (for the most part), since I haven't been keeping up with this thread all that much until like a couple of chapters ago, but the mixed reactions certainly did not start with this chapter. Additionally, people liking the stuff where Mirio is at the center, myself included, doesn't necessarily mean we're enjoying everything else. For myself, it's just a bright spot in this arc, but to be frank, I've personally been ready for this arc to just end already.

Overhaul's powers is FMA's alchemy. Destroy stuff, and maybe rebuild it.
-
And invent a new race, rebuilding joints and nerve endings from scratch!
Still don't see the point of his palm-mouth.

It's definitely an arc that would be immensely improved with the anime.
Also, with the art of this chapter, I'm not surprised that it's messy. Horikoshi is very obviously tired or sick, and has been taking many breaks lately.
-
At least, at the very least give me Nejire VS Chronostatis. Please…
I won't count the other girls out yet, just consider them "damaged" along with Deku. Still some fight in them.
I usually follow the fights better with Viz's clean scan and better translation so not much of an issue. Love Clone Compress joining in, he's got to do something significant. I'd say Eri or Overhaul (and the bullets he's holding) gets taken.Overhaul ain't done yet but it's do or die now. Either fight to get Eri or cut his losses and run. I like Eri saving them, fits with her character. She's looking more like Deku's future sidekick than Kota but hey, why not both? Or, she can be Mirio's sidekick. Not sure how I feel about Mirio possibly getting his powers back, but he's a hero with or without them, I won't be raging.
