One Piece Chapter 879:One of Big Mom's Three Sweet Commanders, Katakuri.
-
Wowa wee wa what a chapter
-
Perospero is the villain MVP of the arc for sure now.
-
Yabadabadoo!!!! Pokken has me up late!
-
Looks like the shining moment for carrot might just be fighting and taking down Pero.
-
So Katakuri sees the future on what attack Luffy will make and counters it with a superior version. Can't copy gear 4 though, probably.
-
Perospero for 4th sweet commander.
-
Nice to see Pound again, I assume he will come in the finale and help with the cake and the Lola angle of this.
Wonder exactly why Pudding is so protective of Lola spot.
And man Luffy get wiped by Katakuri was great.
-
Love that Jinbei speech, he (and Luffy) are the only ones thinking rationally right now. Can't wait to see how they attempt to get away from Big Mom this time.
-
The way Katakuri uses his DF is beautiful. Finally, a bounty that matches the name. I haven't seen anyone match Luffy in speed until now.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Love that Jinbei speech, he (and Luffy) are the only ones thinking rationally right now. Can't wait to see how they attempt to get away from Big Mom this time.
Best option is to go for Perospero, BM can't swim but Zeus will come save her.
-
This is the first chapter I've enjoyed reading in a long time.
Perospero getting all of Aokiji's moments was pretty cool but a sad reminder that Oda is just one man, therefore, he is doomed to repeat himself after this long.
So there is no way Pedro is dead right? I don't think Oda would have his death more or less be meaningless in the end.
I did love that the chapter begins with Brook mourning for him though. Pedro was his wingman throughout the arc.
Jinbei getting the helmsman role immediately was amusing.
Luffy vs Katakuri has been enjoyable so far. Although he basically said the same thing Doffy did before Luffy unleashed gear 4. I just hope Luffy learns something valuable from him by the end of the fight. Awakening maybe?
So is there a possibility that Sanji and Jinbei will team up again to take down a big monster since Luffy is around?
I am now fully convinced Pudding will alter Big Mom's memories in some way by the end of the arc.
The way Katakuri uses his DF is beautiful. Finally, a bounty that matches the name. I haven't seen anyone match Luffy in speed until now.
Doffy surpassed him in speed and power too.
-
Outmatched in speed, outmatched in power. Luffy can surpass him in bounciness with Gear 4th but I don't know how that would help.
-
I'm not sure how Luffy's gonna hold him back since the cake's gonna take a while. I'm sure he could delay him in Gear 4 but that's very time limited which is probably not the best choice for stalling LOL
-
luffy is getting wrecked by his own skill (technically) = adding insult to injury. i love katakuri.
that jinbe speech is great too. harsh but totally needed. it's been quite a smooth ride for the crew and they need to be reminded that this is the new world after all.
-
@All:
Outmatched in speed, outmatched in power. Luffy can surpass him in bounciness with Gear 4th but I don't know how that would help.
The springness of G4 is one of the things that makes it powerful. The way G4 interacts with attack. Powerful katakuri punches will bounce off Luffy, his damage intake will reduce significantly but I still have no idea how Luffy does that damage to Katakuri here. This guy's CoO is like a cheat code.
-
So my suspicions about what Luffy's awakening will entail are seeming likelier after this chapter, Luffy is going to produce rubber and start using his abilities the way Katakuri is…
"This is more effective" it's almost as if he's wanting to train him by giving him ideas.
Now that these random soldiers have finally said it we can finally put to bed that Katakuri is THE strongest commander.
Spoilers didn't do the beatdown justice Luffy is getting upstaged on all fronts, his base stats need to improve significantly he can't always be relying on his gimmicky gears that drain his stamina super fast. 90% certain he's going to get a power boost from this fight as of this chapter. -
Great chapter!
Highlight of it was the fight between Luffy and Katakuri.
Damn, he is a pretty badass Sweet Commander! -
Fun chapter, wonder how Luffy'll overcome Kata. Awakening?

His problem in this fight is Katakuri ridiculous CoO. He dodges or blocks everything.
And I agree, this is a hint on where Luffy's power will evolve to. Imagine G4 with many arms. Frightening.

Jimbe giving speeches to keep Straw Hats in line and keeping an eye on the ocean current while manning the helm. Can I get a yabadabdoo?!
YABADABADOO!!!!
Now then, while I'm not particularly sad about Pedro dying(I still don't believe it lol), I am touched by how hard Nami and the rest are taking it. It's so easy for us as hardcore One Piece readers to over look deaths in this series but I still like to take into account the characters perspective on things. I don't truly believe in character deaths but I do believe the characters feelings.
Carrot hopped up in the crows nest and is looking out. I'm sure some folks are going to run wild with that one.

Sadly so, a role I don't see they really need if Usopp is a sniper, imo.
Unless their's some need to have a role filled, trying to fit someone into that is meaningless.
Jinbei had some foreshadowing on being one and needing one.
-
Doffy surpassed him in speed and power too.
But in Doflamingo's case it was quite different, Luffy's gear third was more powerful but lacked the speed which allowed Doflaminfo to dodge it, while gear second was quite fast but not as strong.
Here, Katakuri's attacks are stronger than gear third, and faster (because CoO) than gear second. Maybe gear fourth is still the way to go, but it's certainly not the same case as Doflamingo's. -

Idk it's two major fights now have highlighted how meaningless his base moves are Doffy laughed at how gear 2nd moves lacked power, gear 3rd lacks speed ect. But in this fight Kata is effortlessly blowing him away with all his base moves and is barely breaking a sweat. The scene where he disappears and does a flying kick…Luffy needs gear 4th to reproduce that.
Edit: Coo isn't the only thing that seems superior even his CoA looks to be on another level.
-
Pretty slow chapter, but a nice transitory one.
Now, did Luffy learn a secret technique when he fought his reflection that he's gonna whip out now?
-
Doffy surpassed him in speed and power too.
This is different. Luffy dodge with that insane speed of his and Katakuri hit him in transit. Same way Luffy caught Blueno while he was using Soru. No one has match Luffy like that.
-
So there is no way Pedro is dead right? I don't think Oda would have his death more or less be meaningless in the end.
Except, as Jinbe explicitly stated, it wasn't meaningless. The fact that Pedro's sacrifice only allowed the Straw Hats to get a little bit ahead is more indicative of the Big Mom Pirates' capability. Much like the built-up-for-years Tamatebako. The Straw Hats would have been completely screwed over if Pedro hadn't…died
-
I really love to see Luffy humiliated, excellent chapter. Jinbe's the one with pants at the crew and Perorin <3!!! gave me even chills!
Yep, a very good chapter, great there Oda.
What's doing Pound? I don't know, why leavin'?
-
I don't think Katakuris speed is beating Luffy, it's his CoO more than likely. G2 and G3 were made to look obsolete by Doflamingo as well.
-
@Shobu:
I really love to see Luffy humiliated
At the risk of emotional debate, why is this a thing? I was at another forum today and they were all celebrating Katakuri's supposed "victory". This is a guy that has been beaten, humiliated and bean the risk of dying far more than anyone.
-
Why does not Jinbe attack them with seawater meteors like while taking a warship in impel down
Should be effective against 2 fruit users no matter how strong they are
Or attack them from underwater -
Great chapter! We forget that most of the crew are still kids/young and any "death" of a friend will affect them that much. This chapter reminds me of that. Good one!
-

The thing is and as was highlighted in chapter before, you can have all the observation prowess at your disposal but if you don't have the speed and reflexes to do something about it it counts for naught. So when Luffy whizzed away to avoid the kick Katakuris speed to take his action into account with a speedy reaction shows it's not just his observation that's at play here. Also Doffy blocked G3 attacks with his web barrier or simply avoided it. Katakuri produced a mammoth gun against it and didn't exactly block the attack he pushed him into the ceiling…

This is exactly what is going on. Sanji would have benefited massively from this fight.

I hope he means it in the sense that a hard fought battle feels so much more rewarding when Luffy eventually comes out on top so being humiliated at first makes the finale that much sweeter.

Sanji vs the strongest member of Big Mom's crew…yeah right.
I enjoyed this fight. From the first moment Katakuri appeared, i liked him, and he's proving to be really awesome atm. Even with Gear 4 Luffy will struggle. Even though luffy dominated DoFlamingo with it, he still took every attack Luffy had to throw at him, till the final one.
I hope Katakuri doesn't lose.

I don't get it either, why do One Piece fans actively cheer for the antagonists so much? I swear this is one of the only fan bases I've seen this happen for.

I don't mean fight. Watching alone will help him.
-
Perospero is absolutely terrifying, there's nothing this guy can't do. He's really showing off why he's the firstborn.
And Katakuri's ability is frightening, and he's just playing around.
Also, lol Sai.
-
I'm happy for Luffy though, this fight is a big advancement for him. For someone that learns and evolves quickly in fight, I can't wait to see how he uses the lessons here.

I wasn't too fond of Pero in his initial introduction thought he'd be another pushover but he's proving to be quite the formidable foe plus that 700m bounty reveal, he should be higher than Smoothie!

Cuz the One Piece villains are so cool and well written?

The last time i saw Luffy humilliated was when Zoro stated that he should not go and pick Usopp to put him back at the crew.
Luffy doesn't care if someone laughs at him like Doflamingo did, he doesn't care if he's defeated many times like at Marineford, he cares a little -supposedly- for people like he did at Fishman island and Punk Hazard and when the wall of the death of Ace was too tall for him, it was shaken to the core but it wasn't humilliated.
At the moment, everything still looks like a game to Luffy to my eyes thanks to his upgrades powerwisely, but this… Katakuri, the man that has everything, and even denoted that Mochi is superior than Rubber, he just plays with him with everything Luffy is made and for sure he cares like everyone does.
He's pretty much untouchable, so for Luffy to not being able to counterattack and being mocked, oh boy, i like it. Plotwise, not even Gear 4 should help, Potato sees the future and Mochi is not a fruit that can be destroyed with power. The only thing that Luffy can do, is obtain more power directed to his Haki, nothing more, but that... hard to happen.
That trophy resides with Zoro for beating Daz.
-
Gear 4th is not going to work. Katakuri will have a counter also for that. It almost feels like Luffy's fighting his antagonistic counterpart.
By the way, this is a mirror match that is taking place in a mirror world. It's a mirrorsception!
-
Cuz the One Piece villains are so cool and well written?
Their coolness is boring. I can't imagine getting stuck with someone like Katakuri since chapter one. Gawd, I can barely stand Law after a while. The way Luffy bounces between goofiness and serious mode is what made the journey interesting.
-
I'm laughing at how Luffy said Rubber won't lose to Mochi when on paper Rubber would lose to most devil fruits out there but it's his willpower that allows him to prevail and overcome other's seemingly superior abilities. I love how Oda is drawing parallels with Katakuri's abilities, as if to remind us that even the most pathetic powers in the right hands can be extremely devastating.
-
Cuz the One Piece villains are so cool and well written?
Really? I mean some of them are unique and have cool powers, but I don't see them as any more interesting than the protagonists.

Blackbeard, he has many layers to him than the average villain. His crew seem like they have a lot of banter too.
-
I understand people cheering for the villians. They know sooner or later they will meet defeat, so why not? When I'm playing rpg, I always want the bosses to give me a though challenge.

There is a big difference between celebrating your favorite villains and celebrating the downfall of the protagonist. The later means it's a bad story, it's like the movie Piranha, after a while people started rooting for the fish.

Dude, that movie is a bad joke in its whole. Worst wasted money of my lifetime.
And wait, who is wishing for Luffy's defeat, did I miss something?
