Chapter 878: Mink Tribe, Guardian Chief Pedro
-
i think you might wanna re-read the last chapters..you clearly have no idea what is going on
hey look it's a typical post from the OnePiece thread, das just great
-
@.access:
I find the final text about the future a bit lame since Katakuri's power to see the future have been completely forgotten for the past dozen of chapters. Like in this very chapter where he clearly wasn't able to foresee anything that was going to happen.I STAND CORRECTED
Did you just looked at the drawings and ignored the bubbles? Luffy completely failed to beat Cracker on his own, he only stood a chance because Cracker had a major weakness against water and Nami provided it so he was weakened to a point Luffy could defeat him. Luffy needs to defeat one of the Sweet Commanders or one of the Calamities on his own before he can move to Kaidou.
Luffy x Cracker didn't prove Luffy was on the level of a Yonkou's top commander. Actually it made the opposite, it made it look like he was not ready for that level yet. His fight with Katakuri will be his second chance to cross that line by himself and prove he can face the logical next level: a Yonkou (well, technically I would place admiral as the next level).
If you saw the fight between luffy and crocodile, you know luffy can solo enemies with water weakness. Water is not limited to nami, there was even a river next to them in the forest that luffy could use. And the water only makes the soldiers soft, it has no effect on cracker himself, tankman soloed cracker himself.
You mean the forest that constantly changes it?
CoO.

So you still think it's not necessary for Sanji to bake a cake?

I was joking about Sanji being left out like a moron.
What is typical from this thread is "you clearly have no idea what fernczmsqncoc nlfnrel "

He just used right here.
You're right. I thought he was talking about Luffy restraning his movements, but he was most likely talking about that+everything that was going to happen.
-

well that's a fact when you say things like "they just escaped"
and "sanji 's cake is now useless"i repeat,re-read the past chapters, because you have not a clear understanding of the situation and the plan.

well it's the typical answer when someone says something that makes him appear like he doesn't know what he is talkling about..people tell him he doesn't know what's going on,go figure

I appreciate Oda's attention to detail that Nami being one of the few SHs who's interacted with the minks for the longest, was the one that was deeply touched/affected by Pedro's sacrifice. My bet is Pedro is alive and Luffy will get him out.
Glad the SHs are out of danger and the plot is moving at a quick pace. Outside of its few weakness this and Zou have been my two favorite arcs of the timeskip.
edit: also if Luffy takes down 2 sweets commanders, he'll definitely be seen less of a greenhorn and a real threat to a yonkou.

What have i read, it was a brilliant chapter.
Damn! -
It seems like the story is going for the cake while the Straw Hats escape, which makes things a lot more interesting on how they can wrap up. I just hope to see a sea battle, a bit of Luffy vs Mochi and I guess the leftovers can be left for Sanji to sweeten it up. With Mochi's defeat, it would be harder for Big Mom to send her troops considering her forces have been crippled. This cake better satiate Big Mom for good.
-
Yeah no chance Luffy is beating a sweet commander on his own, otherwise the hype of calamities will be reduced to shit. Sanjii, zoro and the supernovas will most likely have to team up in 2v1s to beat them, it would be terrible if Luffy beats 1 on his own and 1 arc before them. That just makes everyone except Luffy look bad.
-

For real?
The guy who is the main antagonist and who will face freaking Kaidou with a glimpse of hope defeating him, will now not take the next stepping stone.
The captain of the SH crew should be able to take out a top yonkou commander…just like he did already with Cracker.
Katakuri is now the next stepping stone in his way.
Luffy managed like a boss to create a situation he can face his opponent with all his might after promising his crew to come back and you doubt he will defeat his opponent.
Also it wouldn´t take anything away from someone else of the crew defeating a beast like a yonkou commander, not even in the slightest.
Don´t know how you came to such a conclusion to be honest^^ -
i like how luffy seems to mature.
when he see a friend got KO'ed he usually go crazy but this time around he managed to control himself and issue a proper order to his crew to continue with the plan. usually nami or sanji do this but luffy seems to mature enough to do this himself now.

But luffy is special and future pirate king. Oda alredy showed the difference ebtween other supernovas and luffy when he beat doflamingo yet doflamingo beat law.
Zoro and sanji never had enemies on par with luffy. they have yet to even get someone on par with doflamingo.
Zoro will never be more then what mihawk is now, some warlord level guy, swordmen suck in one piece. Its about pirate captains, not swordmen.

Luffy beating some commanders this arc and Zoro and Sanji beating some next arc sounds good to me ?

Great chapter!
But seriously, if Katakuri is just gonna break all the rules to the point that damage doesn't occur, then what kind of fight is that?

http://www.16bitarena.com/Image54.pngYou need to apply cracker logic here. Katakuri is food just like cracker-s armors, so luffy will eat him.
or maybe his mouth reveals something important like jack, that was hiding his fishmen origins. dwarf theory again.

That ain't armor, it's a body. Even disregarding what a cannibalistic defeat that would be, biting off any part doesn't give any guarantees about that part's actions inside him or the rest outside him.

So he is going to beat Kaido next arc, but he can't beat the logical previous step? I mean he beat one already and I'm fine with just Cracker, but I won't be annoyed if he beats Katakuri. I also wouldn't mind Luffy using the mirrors to get to Sanji and then Pudding taking them both to Sunny later instead of him beating Katakuri.
-
Man, this arc doesn't want to end. It feels like it's been on its last leg for months. Hopefully we get a three chapter fight with Katakuri, then Luffy rendezvous with Sanji via mirror and they GTFO.

Brulee powers seem like there limited to the island she is on and Sanji not on WCI and they plane to meet in the middle.
Maybe the fishmen will grab him.

Dat Luffy face….........Holy......shit.
-
This. Was. Excellent.

Yeah, this was one cool chapter. The Pedro flashback was nice, even if I could care less about Pedro himself as a character. I almost thought that Pedro making fun of his pirate crew's own name at first was hilariously humiliating, but then switching that into being "the dark before the dawn" was a cool twist. Carrot's flashback was eh, but I'm just glad she actually has relevant emotional stakes in this arc for once and isn't as happy-go-lucky and derivative of Luffy's personality as she usually is. I doubt that Pedro's really dead, especially since his dream involves wanting to see the Minks persevere towards the light or whatever, but I can at least appreciate Oda trying to sell us on this by having Perospero all bloodied up and having lost his arm (Nami's reaction to that was priceless lol). If Pedro survived, the copout might be that the explosion somehow flung into another area, as ludicrous as that sounds since they were literally strapped to him, since it would be weird if nobody noticed his body still being intact on that coast near Perospero.
Luffy taking charge as the captain was badass though, I can eat up moments like that all day. Trapping Katakuri in the Mirror World was a cool twist, albeit needed so that Sanji baking the cake does not become redundant. I still doubt we're seeing a full fight between them, but there was a reason why Katakuri's Devil Fruit being similar to Luffy's was hyped up. If it lasts as long as even two chapters, I'm good. Luffy needed Nami's help to defeat Cracker, so fighting Katakuri helps give him more credibility for when he goes up against Kaido in the next arc.
If I had to nitpick ONLY ONE THING though, I felt that it was off to see Luffy being able to grab Brulee. It wasn't completely out of nowhere because this is how the soldiers were able to leave and enter the ship, but the only way Luffy could have grabbed her is if she was literally touching through the mirror. And why would she be doing that if all of the soldiers escaped and Katakuri and Perospero were handling the problem? It's a bit odd since Brulee's powers are so precise that she needed to be tied unconscious to a cart touching the Straw Hats so they could travel through the mirrors, so Luffy got REALLY lucky with that coincidence. This could have been remedied however if we got a panel or two or Brulee poking out of the mirror to want to try helping Katakuri escape or wanting to know what the ruckus was with Pedro's explosion supposedly blowing up Perospero.
And last but not least… JIMBEI'S FINALLY HELMING THE SHIP BABY. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. What's weird is how Oda kept trying to draw attention away from this by mostly obscuring the panels from showing him turning the ship's wheel as if he doesn't want to spoil it or something. I hope we get a full panel reveal of that next chapter.
Great chapter!

http://www.16bitarena.com/Image54.pngLuffy was still able to grab Katakuri. So I guess that Katakuri was actually dodging attacks by making holes in his body? I personally hate since it's so unnecessary.
-
Trying to understand where that mirror comes from when it was in Nami's room, I realised (after several rereadings) Mum's crew conveniently put it on the desk previous chapter :-)
-
None of those links work for mobile for me :(
-
Luffy is the best character in One Piece, fully deserving of his number one spot in the popularity polls. This arc has truly opened my eyes to his greatness

How about the explosion shaking BM a bit, so that she gave Pedro 5 years back of his life, which made him barely survive this :)

Yeah, him acting so serious and like a real captain was long needed and felt badass. I was just nodding while reading this ;)
A full fight was now build up so perfectly with them having room to do so, Katakuri will go down.
I expect them to fight for the next 5 chapters (effectively 2-3 chapters of raw fight), while simultaneously Sanji will bake the cake and the crew calming down BM, so that both climaxes will occur for the grand finale. If I had to nitpick ONLY ONE THING though, I felt that it was off to see Luffy being able to grab Brulee.
I would nitpick that Oda reused Nami in his colorspread, she looked similiar in the one, where the SHs were eating ice cream balls.
But seeing the cannon balls being afraid to slam into the Sunny made that already even :) -
Great chapter after the break !!!
time for the fight hype
btw Pedro lives :ninja:.
-
A flawless chapter! Very hyped for Luffy vs Katakuri!
-
Ok. That chapter really elevated Luffy in my eyes
-
I don't think Pedro will come back like Pell did.
From what it seemed like, Pedro only had few years left to live. The guy was 77 years old in that flashback which was 2 years ago(?) so 79 years old.
He had been waiting for his moment to make a difference ever since that meeting with Roger. He finally got it now. No way he comes back now.
PS Kid Pedro was so cute!

I don't expect Luffy to not play any role at all in quelling Big Mom's rage. Luffy is always the hero in every arc. At best, Sanji shares that equally with Luffy, not more than him. Also, it's difficult for me to see Oda write Luffy versus Katakuri in the Mirror World for that long because there's no stakes in the battle. Brulee is unconscious and they're just stuck there. There is nothing that makes the battle suspenseful (aside from Luffy's survival) like the Birdcage in Dressrosa or anybody to impress by witnessing his defeat like the Dressrosa citizens. Luffy's big climactic fights always serve as an inspiring catharsis for audiences in and out of the story, not "just" a fight. So at some point, I expect Luffy to find a way out of the Mirror World to save the day in very much the same way Nightmare Luffy came to help his crew defeat Oars and Moria during Thriller Bark.
Luffy versus Cracker had the stakes of not seeing Sanji, and that was early in the arc so it wasn't a big climax or anything. But Luffy versus Katakuri for the rest of the arc in a contained pocket dimension feels too hollow for how Oda writes Luffy's big fights.

But seeing the cannon balls being afraid to slam into the Sunny made that already even :)lol That was a bit funny. It would've been even funnier if they didn't want to hit Katakuri and Big Mom.

Luffy's line about facing him again suggests they could meet in the future

Great chapter.
I'm not sure about Pedro. I mean after this chapter he feels like to Carrot what Bellemere, Hiruluk or Tom were to their 'youngsters' so I'm fine with him snuffing it if it means developing Carrot in a meaningful way. Tho if she doesn't amount to much or he survives then… yeah cool I guess? Kinda would have liked a little bit more fleshing out of both characters and a little bit more backstory but obviously we are pressed for time since a lot happened in this chapter.
-
Luffy reminded me a lot of Goku in that shot, like when he said goodbye before suddenly transporting himself and Cell to King Kai's planet just before he blew up Earth.
-
The rollercoaster this damn arc proves to be continues. Holy **** that was the most amazing chapter since 850.
I seriously don't know what to think now…:wassat:

Does it?
This shit is way to brief to have any significant importance, imo.
Especially on the lvl of those guys.

Sometimes you have to lean back and enjoy that an awesome fight going to happen.
When Luffy doesn´t defeat this guy, he and his crew won´t be able to escape, that much is clear for Luffy and to keep his promise of returning he has to defeat Katakuri.
But i would agree that Luffy having the last interaction with BM seems necessary, so him feeding the cake to her after overcoming Katakuri is a likely scenario. -

brulee's mirrors only cover WCI..sanji is already out of the island,so luffy can rendezvous with sanji.
maybe he will go through a mirror to germa kingdom..they should still be on the bay of WCI getting invaded. -
Pedro -> Pell 2.0

I like awesome fights and am glad to see that maybe we might get a one v one fight this arc after all even though it didn't need to happen. I would kind of be fine if that were to happen for the rest of the arc if Oda can still come up with a convincing way for Big Mom to eat the cake without Luffy being present lol. I'm just talking about Oda's writing patterns though, and why he commits to them. Brulee is knocked out cold, so even if Luffy loses, he has to wait until Brulee is conscious again in order to escape. There is suspense there, but not as much as suspense as I would expect from an arc climax written by Oda.

This, this and once more this! Whereas the upcoming Luffy vs. Katakuri surely can be awesome, it just does not work as this arc's climactic final battle, because as you said: No suspense, no stakes, no upcoming feeling of catharsis in case of Luffy delivering the final blow. My guess still is that Luffy and Kata not only will enter the baking scenery, but in the end they also will team up in order to deliver the cake to Linlin who then finally has lost the last remnants of her mind completely.
-
WTH is that shark and why is it important ? any ideas ? im sure it wasnt just pulled for some stupid running gag ?

This is what I also believe will happen. Even though it's a bit hard to since Luffy is no Naruto when it comes to Talk no Jutsu lol. I want to see the Big mom Pirates use their powers to help the cooking process because it's one of the only ways to incorporate action and suspense into the cooking process instead of Sanji, Pudding, and Chiffon cooking with ordinary ingredients in a small room and only worrying about a time limit.

It is the Shark Submerge III. It is the submarine Brook and Pedro used to get into Totland. Brook and Chopper were absent for the past few chapters because they had to get it back. Without Franky on board, they apparently had to tie it onto the ship than open a passage for the submarine to get back into the ship.
-
People have probably been saying this ever since last chapter, but this whole Pedro business really seems like the set up for Carrot to join the crew. Idk, it just feels that way but hell I'm probably wrong.
