Oh yeah so that guy is Sam's dad. I didn't know his introduction last season was gonna be relevant anyhow.

There aren't any core narrative benefits to showing the Lannister/Tyrell war.
Yeah but why bother with it and make it look like the lannisters are outmatched and then to just make it back easily and in 2 episodes like that?
Just let Olenna die with the other tyrells in the sept…
-
Then we wouldn't have gotten the best scene of the episode…
-
Yeah I guess we needed Olenna telling Jaimie she was the one behind the poisoning. I guess he'll tell Cersei he hurt her very bad before killing her. Or maybe Jaimie and his soldiers will get crushed before returning to King's Landing.
What about Braavos btw ? They have a very strong army of mercenaries right ? If I recall right.
But they endorse Cersei, so will Daenerys go there for a hike with her dragons ? Something has to happen in Braavos at some point in the story. Will we see the Sealord of Braavos ? Will the Faceless men have a role in this mess ?
Aren't we gonna see Jaqen H'ghar again ? -
Indeed. Olena couldn't be done in by just fires from hell. She had to expend her saz one last time in order to die.
Again, the show cheated with the Tyrel forces, they should had the bigger army as their forces where only used at the battle of blackwater, but whatevs, I can buy Tarly getting everyone to turn just because even if they recognized Olena as the Lady of the Reach, the Tyrells would die with her.
But now Danny is the "underdog" again, on a technicallity, because as long as she has the only air force of the world, she should be able to take Kings landing at any moment. Teleporting pirates be damned.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
The Bravos thing bothers me, the city was founded by escaped slaves, and are very anti slavery and anti dragons.
Danny would be 1+ and 1- to them if they focused on the anti-dragon part and could push them to work with cersei, but no, they are slavers now because everyone loves fire breathing lizards?
-
Why are they anti-dragons again ?
And I thought Cersei implied they had no slaves within the city but actually were benefiting from them with the slaves outside of the city. I mean, the slaves are still part of the economy.
-
Then we wouldn't have gotten the best scene of the episode…
Im with you there… but she was going down way to fast... she could also not die in the sept but just in kingslanding with the same result as now...

Wait so. were there more Tyrells alive??, I thought that was the reason as to why The Reach split, with all Tyrells dead, some Tyrell characters not even being in the show and Olena not being born a Tyrell, that's why The Reach would find in Randyll its new leadership, and barely few people actually defended Highgarden, the only strange thing would be how the people of The Reach don't mind at all going against an ally of a three dragons princess, but it was either that, ot face Cercei I guess.
Come to think, the only ones who actually were contributing a Westerosi army, were the Greyjoys, Ollena didn't have much, and Dorne is currently Lordless, do the sand girls had an army for themselves?? cause if not, why would the warriors of Dorne listen and follow the people who murdered their heir?, worst allies ever. freaking Varys.

The showrunners also needed to give Daenerys allies and take them back to make it look like she was losing.

Anti Dragons: Not really present time spoiler but just in case
! The Bravosi were escaped slaves from the Valirian people, their homelands burned and conquered by dragons, from many different lands, they escaped, and they hid, and they grew, and they prospered, without slaves, and managing to hid from the dragons untill the Valirians were destroyed.
! I don't think that we know what was the Bravos-Westeros relationship during the Targaryen rule, we do know that Littlefinger's grandfather is from there, and through his conections he hooked up Robert with the iron bank and that is the original cause of Cercei's current debt.Westeros is supposedly slave-free, mostly thanks to the faith of the seven, as it predated the Targaryens, but medieval servitude is not that much of an upgrade.
-
The showrunners also needed to give Daenerys allies and take them back to make it look like she was losing.
Yeah, but why not make her lose that with a politcal maneuvre of Cercei and Jamie with Randyl Tarly and using the vacuum the Tyrells have left?

Wait no, the other way around, Olena was the last "Tyrell", aparently the biggest family, and the ones who lost less in the last 10 years of wars had no cousins.
Elaria as a bastard assassin and Olena as the widow of the last lord shouldn't have inherited, but then again, neither should Cersei. The point was that the dornish seemed to agree with Elaria's insane plan, and Olena just sazed her way to avoid any lord from taking her shit. And Cersei just took it and no one dared to say no to Gregor.

Aren't we gonna see Jaqen H'ghar again ?The fact that the iron bank was introduced is alluding to Braavos throwing their hat in the ring. If not for anything else, but to protect their investments in Cersei. If King's Landing were attacked, it would be in their best interest to defend it, if they still deem Daenerys unworthy. As for the Faceless Men, they could probably be dispatched to handle specific political figures. Like if they decided to assassinate Daenerys, now is as good time as any.

It seemed like the Iron Bank not only lost investments with the disappearance of slavery. But also, I think it would be unreasonable to assume they wouldn't give money to states with slavery. Since they are located in Essos and everybody were involved with slavetrade there. While it could be illegal within Braavos' limits, I don't think that makes the banks more willing to put money on Daenerys at this point at least. It doesn't make much sense for them to let ideology come before good investment. Maybe they'll just take the money and go "Kay thanks" and then bet it on Daenerys, anyway. It all depends on how they view the outcome.
-
Does House Tarly become the lords of Highgarden now in addition to wardens of the Reach? if yes then they would officially be the new strongest house in westeros
-
These past few episodes have been great, truly. But they are also easy. All these characters meeting up, that is bound to draw a reaction from any crowd. Martin laid down the groundwork, and the showrunners get to capitalize on it.
While the Tyrell's being taken off guard so easily in time of war is odd, could've been done/shown better, I have no interest in watching another siege. What bothers me is the easy at which three of Daenerys' allies were disabled. I mean, screw the shrewdness of the red wedding. And I get it, fewer episodes, much to do, but, as they kill of individual characters (still alive the books) because its easier than having them around and give them screen time, they similarly seem to be killing of entire kingdoms.
The amount of balls George is juggling is unbelievable.

Are the Dragons supposed to be fully grown at this point? thats kinda meh… i was hoping for them to end up like FREAKISH huge.

The older the dragon gets the bigger he grows… so they grow there whole life... and the oldest dragons was i think 200 years old, Balerion the biggest Dragon of Aegons 3 Dragons...

Folks are having nerdy geo-political discussions about the Houses and the supplies in the Highgardens and I'm here, happy that I remembered who old geezer Tarly was.

Has show Jaimie been portrayed as a skillful tactician? I can buy Euron as the master of the seas but I don't really see Jamie as the equivaland.
-
Things just had to look like Cercei actually stands a chance, they have just gotten rid of a bunch of useless allies(except Varys), based on trailers, it seems the Dothraki and the Dragons are gonna turn the Lannister army into ashes, and this may make Bronn, Randyll and even Jamie reconsider the side they're fighting for(if they all survive the battle of course)
-
Bronn might actually flee and go back to King's Landing and eventually deliver the bad pussy and give her the antidote.
Jaimie is riding the same horse he'll be riding during the fuck up against the dragons so it's probably for next week.
-

I sea what you did there.
Anyway, didn't he say in the episode that he got the idea from when it was done to him by Robb, and gaining wisdom from mistakes (hence Olenna's burn about him surely being very wise by now)?
-
That's true, that was a good burn. Cersei seemed very certain of his prowess before that but then that's just Cersei.
-

Part of Jaime's general arc is that he needs to think more now that he can't get by on swordsmanship. He's no genius but he's decently smart and has been making an effort to learn. His education undoubtedly included military history (but his mind may have been cough elsewhere).

Just caught up on this season. Some thoughts:
- I wish the showrunners would think about the logistics behind these battles and the inter-continental travel a bit more. All this teleportation kinda shrinks the scale of this epic fantasy into more of a standard drama. For example, there was no reason to show Euron's ship in the battle of Casterly Rock. It would have been perfectly believable that the Ironborn fleet was split in two or something, with one half hanging out on the Western coast of Westeros.
- I might have misunderstood the scene, but the Iron Bank wants to reinstate slavery? What.
- I liked Bran and Sansa's interaction. He probably has no idea what he's saying, perceiving so many things at the same time.
- Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke really are some of the weakest actors in the cast. Pretty unfortunate that their characters ended up being the most important. The Lannisters are still great at least.
- I liked the Hound's scenes with the brotherhood. Glad they took the time to slow down and show some of that. His vision in the fire was pretty awkward though.
- Great ending scene with Olenna and Jaimie
- Dany is being seriously stupid not just taking King's Landing. She could literally just fly to the Red Keep and annihilate everyone inside, without harming too many citizens. Effectively crippling the Lannister cause. Meanwhile she just lets her allies die.
-
but not bending was the wisest thing he did.
if had bend the knee, then that means swearing loyalty and complete obedience to her. which of course means that she will prioritize her war with ceresi and use his forces for that war.
which is something that the northerners will never agree upon because a) she's an outsider invader to them, b) they're already fighting a war of their own with the nightwalkers and c) the last targaryen they knew about (the mad king) was their enemy!
jon made the most logical choice, why fight for someone you barely know in a war that can be postponed while you have a much more dangerous war coming to you.If he didn't bend because he believe the it would cause trouble with the leaders in the north he might be slightly more intelligent than I think. I would say coming back alive with permission to mine dragon glass would help with the trust issue but it is a fair worry.
But he seems to stand his ground on some idea that Danny should just come fight the walkers because it's right thing to do. And with him only the right thing matters not compromise. Danny seemed fine enough to let him do whatever as long as he bend. So him staying in the north playing with imaginary zombies wasn't really a problem. I doubt she wanted to move them in the first place since it seems hard to move in winter and it would be hard for them to return to their homes after war i the south. For some reason he also think it's better to talk about the walkers which he has no proof of rather than his death that has witnesses and 14 marks as proof.
There are good reasons to not want to ally to Danny(mostly she is a targaryen and from the south) but the reasons he didn't want to didn't seems related to that. I don't mind it much since it is consistent but I expected it to work for him rather than against him for once.

! Are we gon to remain silent until sunday, even tho the whole chapter got leaked??
-
It's in low quality and water stamped, so I have no intention of watching or reading about it. Put it in spoilers if you want to talk about it.
-
Yeah, if you're going to discuss the leaks, put it in spoiler tags and clearly label it as a leak spoiler.
-
-
Man this is only episode 4. Things are ramping up.
-
That's a pretty deep lake. He was pushed like what … 1 meter from the shore?
And poor Meera. She just wanted a hug, Branbot!!!
-
okay now that's officially out, MOST EPIC CHAPTER SO FAR!!.
yeah, screw Bran!
-
Davos caught onto Jon having the hots for Danny, but he didn't immediately start wingmanning? Super out of character moment if I may say so!

I like how Arya or Sansa completely neglected to bring up Rob or Rickon or Catelyn in their conversation especially Rickon whom Arya has no way of knowing is dead. Great dialogue writing there.
-
-
Yeah, Jon really needs it! His only trick, taking a girl into a cave, didn't work out this time. Probably because there was no pool.
But Davos was too busy with Missandei … and who could blame him?
-
I didn't expect to shit my panties when the Dothrakis and Daenerys showed up.
-
- I might have misunderstood the scene, but the Iron Bank wants to reinstate slavery? What.
Sobering reminder that early modern capitalists were the ones riding the rl slave gravy train, even if they otherwise seem comparatively enlightened and modern next to all the medieval feudal lords.

I confess I've never swam in armor before but I imagine Jaimie is quite heavy. Golden arm, too. He won't die, but he'll need Bronn to save him.
The reach of Bran's power is peculiar. If he can see even in the throne room, is he then able to see his attempted murder? As Brain said, there's a lot of information, and he's still sifting through it and, eventually he'll see the moment Littlefinger betrayed their father. Though, he might not even care. Sansa and Arya will.
"Chaos is a ladder" was epic. Jon openly said he'd kill him. Sansa's getting wiser. Bran's like whatever dude. Arya just showed she can kill anyone she wants. Littlefinger is surrounded by quite a few formidable Stark's, ha!
I still don't think Jon will kneel. Mance Rayder didn't kneel, and I don't think Jon's forgotten that.

Just because it wasn't said on screen doesn't mean it was never said. Rob and Catelyn have been dead for a couple of years now, what's there to say but the obvious.

I for one dont need to see the show play the "Rickon is dead" beat when all its going to be is Bran or Arya just looking all sullen about it for five minutes before immediately getting over it.
If this show was just people reacting to things, it would never end.

^That meme was the reason I totally cracked up as Dani actual said it in cave. Dammit internet XD
Awesome episode btw.
-
If we speak about the teaser. Shall we use spoiler tags ?
! I think the Tarly will bend the knee.

Quotes for the pantheon of failures.
Oberyn Martell: Today is not the day I die.
Jaimie Lannister: We can hold them off.I think we cal also add Theon's speech before getting betrayed.

A good episode, clearly answered the complainers about skipping fights.

Are you guys serious? It's her baby brother. God forbid characters be written organically. No no, we have to think about ratings and the audience attention span.

Maybe he can pull off something like this?
