Dragon Quest thread : DQXI on PS4, 3DS & Switch

anyone on ap getting 11?
I will when I am done with my coding boot camp (Oct.).
More on that later.
-
I'd import DQM Joker 3 first.
-
yeah was definitely asking for the people that can read JP. Was just curious DQ11 is going to be my summer game.
-
I'll pick the Switch version of it up I imagine.
-
About 10 hours into DQ7. Just got Ruff into the party, (yaye, wolf boy!) and have started monster island. No real recruitments yet, (I really want a Choppy Hopper) and no character job classes yet… though I've been a little spoiled that doesn't come until after I get the next character.
I can see why this game is a million hours long. Lots of forcing you to run back and forth on fetch quests, and lots repeat areas you just did in order to pick up fragments, basically visiting every single location twice in a row, or more if you missed a thing. That adds up quick. I have no idea how bad it was in the original, but it seems like something they reeeeally could have trimmed back on a little.
Same sort of backtracking problem NinoKuni had. Artificial adding of playtime by redoubling the same areas. Ah well.
-
Finally playing DQ4 right now. I also want to play 1-3. Which are the best versions of those games? Are the Android versions good?

Super Famicom and Gameboy Color had the best versions. The android versions aren't bad, but they had things removed.
-
SNES versions /w fan translations are the best, though I recall the III translation not being amazing.
Defo don't bother with III on mobile, it had no Pachisi. urgh
-
Going to have to resort to emulation then

The GBC version of III also had some extra stuff, like a medal collecting system and a new dungeon with the Sword of Rubiss as a reward (if you can collect all of the medals and beat Grandragn).
-
True. Although the ice cave was a pretty short dungeon (I think it was mostly ice sliding puzzles from memory), so I'd still go with the SFC version which had those lovely late era snes graphics using the dq6 engine.
-
About 25 hours into DQ7 now, currently on the Al-Balad story line with the face of evil. Trying to figure out where the river serpent is. I assume as usual it's a "missed talking to that one NPC" issue.
Have job classes finally, but still don't have a fourth party member which I was expecting to because job class games kind of require it. Well, that's going to unbalance things a bit later. Sending hero down the fighter paths, Maribel down the magic path, and Ruff down thief/sailor/shepard. Will mix it up more later but getting through those and then the fusion classes they unlock should take a while yet.
Still don't quite understand how to activate the monster classes, though I do have a healslime heart.
-

If a character is holding a monster heart, that monster class will be available as a choice. The game doesn't really tell you, it just shows up as another option in the list at Alltrades Abbey.

"In 2018"/ So… January? June? December? Wish they narrowed it down a little bit.
Oh well, Nino Kuni 2 in the meantime.

The 3DS has a huge install base and is still selling extremely well. I think we'll definitely see the 3DS version.

That's actually a good argument for why we may not get the PS4 version. Square Enix doesn't seem to care about properly promoting their products in the west, so unless Nintendo pays to localize them we tend to miss out.
Nintendo is almost definitely publishing again.
-
It's not a good argument - it's a piece of evidence from over a dozen years ago and TWO lengthy console generations, which is ancient history. They've brought over all the flagship DQ games recently, plus spinoffs. Why would they not put it out on the system with the most sales momentum? That's idiotic.

Nintendo brought over the Dragon Quest 7 and 8 remakes because Square Enix wasn't going to. SE did publish 3 spinoff games on the PS4, but none of those are RPGs. Dragon Quest X for PS4, the first flagship title to come to a Sony system since Dragon Quest 8 on PS2, went unpublished in the west.
But what about all the spinoffs from this generation they decided not to bring over? For the three we did get, I count NINE that were never westernized: Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Professional, Dragon Quest Monsters Wanted, Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light, Dragon Quest Monsters Terry's Wonderland 3D, Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key, Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 3, Dragon Quest Monster Parade, and Dragon Quest of the Stars.
-
Dragon Quest 10 was also a full blown MMO. Of course that didn't make it here, it wouldn't work at all here. We can agree that it was silly of them to not bring the DS ports over sooner, but leaving 10 in Japan is ABSOLUTELY the right decision, 100%. It would have been a huge mistake to even try. It would have lost so much money it might have killed the franchise forever.
And,.. of course they didn't bring over all those spinoffs. DQ isn't a huge franchise here, it can't support that many titles. Even Assassin's Creed can't support that many titles and spinoffs.
If they want this franchise to ever be successful here they're going to push the biggest and best looking version. THey made a legit push back when 8 and 9 came out and those both did well, but they've been the only new games to really get a push. We'll probably be getting botht he PS4 and DS versions.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
The PS2 had a huge install base and was selling well, but we didn't get it's version of 5.
The port of the game that was at the time 12 years old from the Super Nintendo era, in a sea of other PS2 rpgs, that would have come out within months of Dragon Quest 8 which was getting a real push and looked vastly superior.
It's pretty easy to see why that decision was made..

I agree, it would've been a costly mistake. I was just responding to Stephen's claim that "They've brought over all the flagship DQ games recently, plus spinoffs."

It still would've been nice if they'd released the third and final DQMJ game. We got the first two, and the 3DS has the largest install base of any system this generation.

Well the first one sold 150,000 units in its first year and 40,000 in it's second. The second game sold 40,000 in its first year. Pretty easy to see why they didn't.
Meanwhile over in japan they consistently sell 1.3 million.
-
The news of the western announcement kind of made it hard to focus on the fact that today's the launch date in Japan.
Next week, the Japanese charts will absolutely nuts (naturally). -

Joker 1 was properly advertised, Joker 2 had no advertising at all. Only the hardcore fans even knew it existed.

I just figured it was in line with Square's established flakiness towards releasing the series in the west especially since they didn't much an excuse for having Nintendo publish 9.
-
All I can do is cross my fingers and hope that the Western release will have voice acting and an orchestrated soundtrack like what happened with VIII. It's a tall order, I know, but let a man dream…
-

Plus the hardcore didn't even want it, we wanted Professional.
-

That's… sadly true. I was one of those people who held out for Professional until Joker 2 was 20 bucks. :(
-
I got joker 2 and I honestly dislike it. Monster size restriction ruined my fun in making any kind of party. joker 3 did supposedly fix that by allowing you to have giant monsters downsized with nerfed stats but it came out early this year and this year has just been churning out a+ games I never had a window to go back to it.
-
Size restriction is the stupidest thing ever and kinda killed the series for me. I want to end the game with three uberbosses.
Like I think in DWM I ended up with Darkdream and 2 x Deathamoor3, which was awesome. -

Like I think in DWM I ended up with Darkdream and 2 x Deathamoor3, which was awesome. You and me both.
I think it's even more amplified since DQM is a solo experience for me. I don't care for online battles all I want is the journey to the most op monsters.
Also I kinda remember DQM J2 endgame being annoying not sure why anymore but it totally dropped that game after getting through the story.

To the shock of no one, DQ11 sells a boatload in Japan. ABout 2 million copies in 2 days.
http://kotaku.com/goodness-dragon-quest-xi-sold-a-buttload-in-japan-1797457176?According to Famitsu, it’s estimated that the Nintendo 3DS version sold 1,130,468 copies at retail, while the PS4 version sold another 950,338 copies at retail. These figures do not include download sales, and the reason why the first are only for the first two days is because DQXI’s release was at the end of the sales week.
To put this in context, the Switch and Wii U versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold a total of 230,981 copies during the game’s first three days out. Splatoon 2 had a huge launch with a estimated 670,955 copies sold at retail in its first three days out, and Pokémon Sun And Moon sold 1,905,107 copies at retail during its first three days.
-
11 is the most charming game I probably played since ni no kuni. It has a lot of the usual dumb problems of old men designing things in a bubble.
Zone is a more varied system than psyche up but at the same time it's negated and becomes insanely dumb cause it's all RNG leaving you no agency/knowledge of when someone goes into zone until it happens. Battles are slightly slower than 3ds DQ8 with speed up.
It's just Dragon Quest really. With all the good and bad. I'm having a blast though.(PS4 version)
-
Are there any plans for a PSN release of Dragon Quest 1-3, 6 and/or 9? Now's the perfect time, and almost all of those have been released on iTunes and Android.
-
Pretty far along on DQ7 I think. Have most of the puzzle pieces filled out and islands unlocked, about 50 hours in…. though I still don't have a fourth party member.
But just did one area that was suuuuuuper annoying.
Go through portal, cross bridge, go to town, town tells you to go through monster infested cave to a church on top of a mountain to check out a magic statue.
Go to church, get cinema, they tell you to go back through the monster infested cave to town
Go to town, they tell you go check on something on the bridge.
Go to bridge, cinema happens where magic statue gets broken, and they tell you to go back through the monster infested cave to check up on the priest in the church.
Go back through the monster infested cave, to the church, cinema happens, tells you to go deal with a thing in town and help defend it.
On this one trip, suddenly the cave isn't monster infested, but its still a trip through it. Go back through the monster infested cave, to the town, trigger a cinema, then go to the bridge,
Pick up statue, then go through the town, through the once again infested with monsters cave, to a spot behind the church that you might have already visited earlier anyway.
Start to do a super simple task that a braindead monkey could do, get interrupted by a boss fight.
Fight boss. Probably supposed to be challenging but at this point it's really not. Eventually hurt the boss to a point where you trigger the arrival of a NPC to do the braindead monkey task.
Continue fighting boss, except now you hurt him a lot more and he does zero damage to you. Zero challenge at all.
(Unlike a similar event earlier in the game where you fought overpowered bosses once then weakened them to maneagable but tough... here the overpowered boss was maneagble and his weakened state was pathetic.)
After that, head down to the city again and...I don't even know, I saved and stopped there. Because even though it was surely over I'd been running back and forth between the same three spots for an hour and a half. I may have jumbled the above sequence a tiny bit because it all strings together, but yeesh.
And that's not counting the fact that as soon as this IS done, I'll head back to the future, and have to repeat the quest to the church through the monster filled path at LEAST one more time, if not both up and down.I can't even imagine how frustrating this must have been in the original version when the monster battles were random. I'm okay with a little backtracking and fetch questing but this was ridiculous. There's no excuse for this when even the teeniest bit of streamlining could have made it a done-in-one pass. Cinemas could have been merged. There could have been a fade to black and then you appear back in town with the next cinema trigger. Or they could have just not made you go back up to check on the priest, prior to him sending you down and you having to go back up ANYWAY.
And the entire game has been loaded with this sort of thing, lots and lots of spots where they make you re-trod over a location when really it should be a quick cinema cut. Revisiitng towns in the future is time filley enough, but this is just dumb. I can see why the original game goes for 120 hours. It ain't because it's solid content. I've tolerated it up to now but this town was just reeeeally pushing it.
-
Were other RPGs of the time that bad? I haven't actually played any PSX-era RPGs, but I remember a lot of games advertising a hundred hours or more of gameplay.
-
Almost any RPG is going to have you backtrack and do some pointless fetch questing, but the good ones keep you on a constant forward momentum… This was not in any way a typical flaw of the era. ANd if they do make you revisit a place three or four times... they try to space it out so that you do those visits 10 or 15 hours apart, so you don't do it ALL IN A ROW.
The Chrono Trigger port for the DS, the game plays and paces exactly like the classic the entire game and igt's great... and then you get to the new area where.... they make you repeat the same little bit of map... 5 or 6 times in a row. And it's awful and pace breaking and ruins the experience and feels like its just there to pad time.
(Similarly this is an issue Final Fantasy 8 did was constantly making Squall do things you JUST did with Laguna.)
DQ 5,6 and 8 didn't have this issue, so I'm not sure what happened here. Especially considering this remake apparently REDUCED the drag, and made monster encounters dodgeable instead of random. Just.... yikes, this must have been awful in the original.
(Side side note, I'm dissapointed job classes don't entirely stack. You master a high tier job class and then switch you keep none of the bonuses... making you feel like you'd be better off sticking to the old class where all the powerful spells and abiltiies are. But, gotta grind through for the Hero class....)

1-3 should be on PSN at some point (they're coming out in Japan soon).
They seem to be the mobile versions based on the SNES version and had extra work done, but the sprites now look ugly as hell.

They could've just released the virtual console games. Why spend extra money to turn them into the fugly FF6 remake?

is DQ 11 as big as 8 was?
The game just came out, so I don't think we know yet.
You can transfer your save data from the 3DS version to the PS4 version and vice versa. The games support a password save feature, similar to the one in Dragon Quest 1.
-
Finally got the damn fourth party member. Given his level and the job classes, I think I was supposed to pick him up sooner but had missed some NPC dialogue somewhere along the way that was needed to trigger the events to get him.
….And I know there's still a fifth character to go yet too.
Only 7 missing shards remaining though!

Everyone after the starting three practically joins you underlevel though once you start grinding classes on the DLC maps it becomes a moot point.

11 was a true blast I like it more than 8 which it resembles the most to. It's a super long game though I platted it and ended at 130 hours. And there was still a few other things to do despite that.
The cutscene direction and animation is insanely good and give so many of these characters that aren't necessarily that much more complex that much more depth and personality. -
You're fast. Hasn't it only been out for 2 weeks?
