discuss in which way?
the french one by giamini is at a good quality but i think french language is definitely not made to translate one piece. don't know why but it always sounds awkwards, and that has nothing to do with the translator.
The brazilian one is good in my opinion. Sometimes even better than the scanlation from american groups. But lately the chapter have been filled with anoying mistakes. And they sometimes cut a chapter in half, since the vols. here in Brasil are half the japanese ones to keep a low price so that we can afford it…

You know how other countrys translations are compared to VIZ and the fan-translators translations.

Yep. I think the brazilian translation is quite good. The fact that each volume is made into two issues in Brazil is annoying, but overall I like the translation a lot.
Question for any of you who might know this:
Why do they change the names in the Phillipines translations? Not like Zoro to Zolo, but completely different names. Like Nami is Natalie. Does anyone know? Do they find Japanese names offensive or something?

I wouldnt think that anyone would be offended with Japanese names, its just how they work, I guess. Perhaps its also a way for them to "localize" the characters.
As for the chinese translations…
Tong Li, the Taiwanese publisher of the OP mangas, are okay. Their translations could be better though, perhaps improvement in the translation of certain names and places.
Jojohot, the chinese scanlation group for a lot of manga, I think are good. They also have errors in translation though, but less than Tong Li.
here is a sample Jojohot scanlation: (yeah I know its in chinese)
!
Back again with some info on the norwegian translation:
1. It orginates from the German translation so changed names and attacks comes from the german translators.
2. The distrubutor is Schibsteds forlagene(they are the main manga relasers)
3. We are currently up to volume 16(Drum arc)
4. No major changes in the main characters names, exept Luffy=Ruffy but however many of the side characters and villains have changed names.
Exampels: Ms All Sunday is now Miss bloody sunday(weird but somewhat funny translation, and Schichhibukai is now the Seven samurais of the sea)
Be back later with more.
Seven Samurais is a bitty silly in my opinion… I think that Seven Warlords would be better.
In Brasil they just give the original name and explain it on a note.
Hence, Shitibukai is Shitibukai, atacks from Ruffy are Gomu gomu and so on. Only diference is the name, Ruffy. Some characters name are also diferent, but nothing traumatic. Portgus D. Ace, Duraculle Mihawk and so on. And they really use a wide variety of language gags that only Brasilian Portuguese would allow to adapt while keeping the original intention of the japanese pun. And the swearing has more variety, instead of kick your ass all the time...
Jacareeeeeé!!! (for those that understand portuguese, that was priceless when he said to Croc).

O.O
That is such a cool name XD
"I'm Mr. Zero… Crocodile.. and this is my partner... Ms. BLOODY SUNDAY!!! She'll rip your heart out!!!"
that.... is damn cool.
The french version is average. Some translations are great (Grandline and Shichibukais have been especially well handled), others blow (Pipo for Usopp makes me want to pour battery acid on my eyes), and some dialogues make no sense, like Smoker talking to Tashigi at Alabasta.
It could have been worse I guess.
noxnames, your avatar disturbs me greatly.

I was thinking that too! Miss Bloody Sunday is infinity times cooler than Miss All Sunday. I wish the english translation could have gotten that. :O
Anyone know websites where you can order the french comics/dvds?
I know Taz, thats why i have it.
More goodies from the norwegian translation:
There are lots of name changes, but the baddest has to be Boogey and Woogey(which is the giants Dorry and Broggys name changes), Dr Hiruluk is now Dr Bader, Hatchan is Okta and Don Krieg is now Don Creek.
Another funny thing is that they add accents and catch lines to some of the characters. Kuromarimo says Mon Dieu in the beginning of some of his sentences, Bon clay has a weird style of speaking(when he says a word with S in it, it becomes a Z instead, which strikes me as a french accent)

Though Okta kinda makes sense and I actually prefer Don Creek, especially in the german release because…it would be kinda weird, at least for me, if he was called Krieg (which means War in german).
What I absolutely hate is Miss Valentine becoming Miss Halloween in the german release of the manga and they called miss Fathersday Miss Valentine...what the? At least they didn't make that mistake in the anime.
Many name changes in the german release I really don't mind...Ruffy, Zorro, Lysop and Tony Chopper are okay, imho.
to hyakamaru
there are still a lot of mistakes in jojo version.
in fact, I think jojo's mistakes are MORE than tong li's
(if you put Japaness as the standard).
they often uses more colloquial sentenses in some lines
that are somehow need more emotional expressions
so, though tong li's is simpler, i think it's still have the qualification to name the official translation of Chinese.

what are you talking about?
i lve in the phillipines and they don't change the names dude

I thought his name was supposed to mean 'Krieg'.

你該不會是ptt OP版上的Zawar吧? o.O?
I guess you are right there. They would make more errors since they are rush scanlations, and also bcoz its mainland chinese they are using, therefore they feel more… weird to my eyes, sometimes.
but still, I feel Tong Li needs more improvement in its translations.
I thought his name was supposed to mean 'Krieg'.
Yeah. The Baratie arc is about battling. Hence 'Krieg'. Although you can't measure how awesome, and satirically funny, it would have been if Oda would had gone straight with "Don Battle".
I'll tell you about the danish tranlation. It seems very like it's similar to the norwegian (so is our language), but we got more volumes. We got 31 volumes and One Piece Red.
Names of Strawhats:
Monkey D. Ruffy
Lorenor Zorro
Nami
Usopp
Sanji
Tony Chopper
Nico Robin (Miss Bloody Sunday )
Dorry and Broggy are also called Boogey and Woogey here, and Krieg is Creek. Marimo says mon dieu and mr.2 zays z inzted of s. Seven warlords are seven samurais. Going Merry is "Det Flyvende Lam" (The Flying Lamb). Hachi, Chuu and kuroobi are Okta, Kiss and "Sorte Bælte" (Black Belt).
Hmmm what more can i say? Well i'll just leave it at this for now.

This is said by one of my Anti-Japanese friends:
its chinese koreans and philipins (Filipinos) against japs
in reality, thats not true. ask any chinese, or filipino, about their feelings for japanese ppl. aside from a distaste in their excluding facts from their history books, overall feeling for the japs are okay, if not good.
Probably obvious but the uk version of one piece is the same as the us version but with crapper paper
The Finnish version is published by a company named Sangatsu Manga and while I do have my problems with it, it's generally quite good. Most words that weren't in Japanese in the original - such as Baroque Works codenames - were left as they were.
Unusual romanizations and/or name changes include
-l'Ollonois Zolo (changed to Roronoa Zoro after the first volume)
-Shichibukai to Seitsemän kaapparilordia, "the seven hijacker lords"
-Cooza (for Kohza)
-Musti for Hatchi
One thing really I appreciate about the translation is that they take full advantage of the Finnish language when trying to convey the way different characters speak, which is something not all translations in Finland do. They also do very good job of translating the odd speech patterns of some characters (Buggy, Bon Clay, Miss Merry Christmas…) and the names of Devil's Fruits.
Boogey and Woogey are really awesome names. I'm serious!
I don't think the jojohot's translation better than Tong Li~
You know, they have different background between two places!
I think jojohot has more chinese colloquial language in their translation, not to be good!
I like Boogey and Woogey too. Their awesome names.
