DON!! XD
Okay…I am speechless about this and when I mean speechless, I mean literaly o_O..
Uh, where the foosh is our live-action movie, that's what I wanna know. >_<
this is supposed to be a straight forward version which….....
What's left to do though? They really should have left it alone…
The funny thing I just watched a marathon of Eva over Labor Day.
Well, they've already been running that alternate-reality Evangelion after the end of the original….
.....I actually liked that one, too. The alternate reality. Rei + personality = win.

Yea that was interesting.
Oh god….and here I was paitently waiting for this series to die off cause its popularity re-awakened recently (I blame the news of a live action movie).
Well, just like the actual NGE series I shall never EVER watch this. ^^
Overrated crap, FTL!
(But from that image it looks like its just gonna be some lovey dubby thing to cash in on all the fanboy/girls of Rei)
What's left to do though?
It's a do over. Gainax is going to reanimate the series in high definition with CGI. >.>;
The live-action movie is an ADV sponsored project; Gainax only gave ADV permission to do it. I heard Robin Williams will star as Gendo Ikari. XFD
I dunno, redoing it might not be too bad. Some parts could probably be done better, especially if they spend more time, effort, and money on doing it better.
I mean, Eva might be overrated sometimes, but it's NOT that bad. I'd watch through it again if they redid the animation.

Once again, I say is that really necessary? Like I said before, I had just watched the series again in the spiffy platinum, director's cut whatever the hell it is. It doesn't show its age at all. I mean back in 1995, there was nothing out there that could touch the animation in Eva. Of course every series could be "better" and they went back with a larger budget to make everything shiny, but they really should just leave it alone.
are you sure it's not a hoax?
well, anything evangelion-related is good for me, as long as shinji is not around, bragging like a brat.
I thought Anno was done with Eva. I mean didn't he make End of Evangelion just to piss off the fans or something?
Well I'm happy.
Evangelion is my favorite series ever, but the budget problems really screwed up the ending. But with a better budget, this could be good. Just as long as Shinji's character isn't changed. I prefer originality and flaws as comparred to generic optimistic brave characters who exist only to meet the god damn personal preferences of the masses.
It feels like 1996 all over again. ._.;
Yay for a better time period.
I'm sorry but I'd pick a guy with balls over a emo any day.
How you people can watch this shit with such a annoying main character is beyond me.
Agreed, I wanted Shiji to die in those episodes where is life was on the line.
They better not make Unit-01 into CGI > : (

Shinji is, by far, one of the characters I hate most….
But Asuka is a goddess. She makes up for him. Mostly.

Abusive loud cynical braggart, hubba hubba.:wassat:

Anno's not behind this, apparently. It's a guy named Toshimichi Ootsuki.
asuka ruined the series even more with her bullshit. I couldnt watch Berserk because Caska had the same voice actress. That is how much i hate asuka

HEY! I can smell the nice copypasta in the morning, friend.

I'd actually watch that.
Ok, so what is actually going on here? a remake, or a spin off, or what?
I do agree that EVA was over hyped, but I still liked it. I liked Shinji, I liked Asuka, I hated Gendo with a passion. I liked how Rei was quiet and kept to herself too. There was something soothing and calming about her personality. I found in that little altered reality thing; that her emotional personality was just wierd and didn't suit at all. That's just my perspective though.

The guy who did the Revolutionary Girl Utena movie is doing Eva?

I never cared for her until we saw her past.
Evangelion is a decent show. It is only at the end of the show that it really started to get psychological and trippy. I was sort of unsatisfied at the ending, but the series had its share of good points. Adding CGI would not be a horrible idea since I remember several scenes in the series where the animation just stops. Specifically, there are some "extended" scenes in the elevator and when Shinji is being clutched by his EVA.
Speaking of Shinji, the character isn't a favorite of mine, but he was the template for a number of anime protagonists to follow. He has historical significance if nothing else. Besides, would it really be any better if he was like this:

Gendo never really got much development, so I never grew to love or hate him. Heck, he has more personality in this single flash than he did in the entire regular series.

Anyway, I'm willing to bite and at least check out the first few episodes to see how the series was modified.
@Cap'n:
Shinji is like the worst character ever
So true, so damn true…
Quick question though. Is this a remake of the original or the alternate universe?
It's a remake of the original.
Besides, would it really be any better if he was like this:
Yes. Then we'd all be "gar" for Shinji.

Seriously I don't get what people had against the TV ending. I liked it compared to that crap End of Evangelion.

According to this this is gonna be 4 seperate movies, it will take place in the same timeline but wont be a remake.
Oh god….and here I was paitently waiting for this series to die off cause its popularity re-awakened recently (I blame the news of a live action movie).
Meh, Eva never really died in Japan. It's like a Dragon Ball. Sure, the only place you might see it is pachinko parlors or UFO catchers, but it's always creeping around somewhere. ^O^
i wanna see pen² again!
So are we going to have this remake/alternative universe anime Evangelion and a live action movie or has the live action movie been canceled?
Actualy a don't give a damn about Evangelion, the only thing i like in it was that damn penguin anyway.
But if Shinji dies at the end then i will be happy.

And one is going to ba a preguel, i wonder if this will be good?
I like Shinji. And, while not a big fan of the series itself, I really dig the original animation much more than animation seen in most of japanese cartoons today.
They're movies? Yeuk.
Yeah, I, uh, pretty much hated everyone in the series except Kaji. >_>
Never saw the animated movies, and after hearing about them, I don't think I ever will. Just give me giant, live-action bio-mechs beating the snot out of the each other on the big screen, and I'm good.
I thought the EVA series was decent, although though the ending wasn't that good. I did however enjoy the alternate universe. I mostly liked EVA because characters had real flaws and personal issues . It was more about dealing with depression than giant fighting robots, which to me, seperated from a lot of other generic robot anime. Haven't seen the movies, but I don't think I want to because of what I have read and heard about it.
This anime was awsome i can't wait for the movies been a little while since i have watched this though
Yeah, I, uh, pretty much hated everyone in the series except Kaji. >_>
I liked everyone in the series except Kaji (and Misato, too); I cheered when his arse became grass.
The title for the new film series is "Evangelion Shin Gekijou Ban", it will consist of 4 parts with the first part arriving in Japanese theaters in early summer, 2007. Staff include General Supervisor: Hideaki Anno, Director: Tsurumaki Kazuya , Character Design: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Mecha Design: Ikuto Yamashita, Animation Production: Khara (Color) Studio. The scenario of the 1st part will be written by Hideaki Anno with storyboard by Shinji Higuchi. Key points of a supposed interview which may or may not appear in the forthcoming edition of Newtype attributed to Toshimichi Ohtsuki of King Records have also been circulating. According to that information:
-The content is quite different though the time base of the story is the same as the original TV series.
I'll wait until I see these to critique them. Evangelion as a whole is my favorite anime series of all time. The original Star Wars trilogy was a masterpiece too, but between all the shitty CGI remakes and the terrible prequels its legacy has been tarnished. I hope the bit above about not being purposefully "difficult" isn't what it sounds like to me. The Godard-esque subtitles and bold directing choices were what made Eva stand out for me, and I'd really rather not see it sink to the level of a typical borefest contemporary anime. Anno being involved makes me hopeful, but I don't think the man is infallible.
So for now, the official stance is optimistic trepidation.
(Ironically enough, I haven't owned the movies since I bought them on VHS in Japan in 1999, and this evening I bought them in a boxset at Borders despite having no inkling of this new development)
I liked everyone in the series except Kaji (and Misato, too); I cheered when his arse became grass.
Strange. Guess I just liked the fact that Kaji was basically the only one who didn't whine the whole time or had next to no emotion. :/
Actually, I take it back. My characters were the Eva themselves. XD
Strange. Guess I just liked the fact that Kaji was basically the only one who didn't whine the whole time or had next to no emotion. :/
I hated Kaji/Misato/Gendo/Ritsuko/Naoko because I'm big on sexual morality and those five were so carnal I engraved their names in stone on my bash list.
On the other hand, while the Eva children are not among my most favourite anime characters, I accepted them as emotionless/angsty/emo because negative feelings are a predominant theme in Eva. If I wasn't curious in seeing how those people acted, I wouldn't have watched the show in the first place.
Not everyone had the benefit of reading about Eva before watching it like I had; I would imagine people "forced" to watch the series without knowing anything about it would have been totally alienated by Shinji/Asuka/Rei's "dynamic" personalities.
they better not fuck it up. evangelion was my first anime series which was not dbz, saint seyia or city hunter and it's still one of my favorites. basically for the reasons stephen pointed at. i liked all the characters even if they were all depressed, that made a very particular mood to the anime. at least that was not boring. just look at tanabe from planetES, she's so straightforward that it becomes annoying after 2 episodes.
I swear, this series is only popular cause it was one of the firsts for many anime fans.
First of Four Evangelion Movies due out Summer 2007. According to the October issue of Newtype (Japan) (On sale September 10), four new Evangelion movies are in the works. The four movies will include a prequel, a mid-series movie, a sequel and a "final" movie. The prequel movie is due out early summer 2007.
While the new story will be set during the same time frame as the original TV series, Newtype states that it will be an entirely new project, not be a remake or improvement of any sort. Newtype also mentions that viewers will not need to have already seen previous Evangelion material in order to understand and enjoy the new movies.
Hideaki Anno will write the scenario for the first movie and will be the general director and manager for the entire project. Kazuya Tsurumaki will direct the movies while Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will provide character designs and Ikuto Yamashita will provide mechanical designs. Shinji Higuchi will provide storyboards for the first movie.
Khara, a new studio that shares office space with Gainax, was recently set up and is seeking production staff to work on Anno's new project.
From Animenewsnetwork…
So Anno IS a part of it? As I said I thought he gave it up.
Speaking of EVA. What was the evangelion anime supposed to be about anyway?
