Eh, they didn't get persona or the next Jump game, I'm fine with steam then.
Based on everything I've read…voice chat and online lobbies will be handled on a seperate smartphone app, not on the Switch itself. Which sounds incredibly retarded IMO.
The details are unclear to me. I know they mentioned "smart device" apps, which I could kinda maybe see a slight use for if you're trying to somehow use a Nintendo Messenger to organize games and such. Or track data remotely. But you have to be just about the biggest moron to make that the sole method of communication and not on the device you're actually playing the games on. You know, so that maybe for a change I can actually hear the game through the same headset I'm chatting with. But hey, it's Nintendo. So we'll find out I guess…
Nintendo: We once again only rely on Mario and Zelda, what else is new?

Relying on Mario? The game that won't be out for a year and they haven't shown in a playable state yet? How are they relying on that? They announced several heavy hitters much closer to launch like Mario Kart, Splatoon 2, and probably Xenoblade 2. I'm the first to call out Nintendo for only giving a shit about Mario and Zelda but this is one case where they're NOT just banking on Mario. Zelda sure somewhat. But if you saw that presentation and said "hey look it's just Zelda and Mario" then you weren't watching.
Consumers: "Nintendo, make more new games, have more third party support!" -> minutes later -> "Not buying until Mario/Zelda/Smash/Pokemon comes out"
Bomberman, Puyo Puyo, and a motley collection of ports aren't really what people mean when they say "more third party support", though. They want multi-plat AAA titles that release at the same time as the other big-boy systems.
They want multi-plat AAA titles that release at the same time as the other big-boy systems.
No. That's stupid and impossible. The hardware will never, ever support the AAA games that release on faster hardware. For the most part the important thing is active and unique 3rd-party support as well as some fresh first-party titles.
That's what people fail to get.
No third party is going to jump on a launch with a huge AAA title. It's stupid in this day and age to invest development time and costs ON A AAA TITLE without knowing what the install base will be.
That stuff will only come after system adoption happens or fails.
edit: not to mention I think the point of my post was missed about how people keep complaining about a system not getting support while concurrently asserting they will ONLY buy it if a hyper specific first-party title happens for it. This makes no sense.
So I just read that Breath of the Wild is a 13.4 GB download on the Switch. Goodbye to half your available internal memory if you buy it digitally.
Mario Odyssey looks pretty great, so does Zelda.
Splatoon 2 doesn't look like it has much going for it to justify it's existence. Maybe if it came with a full-fledged single-player mode, but there's no evidence of that. And also, doesn't a side-step/dodge defeat the point of swimming in ink to dodge?
As usual the Switch appears reasonably priced but on closer inspection it's pretty terrible value-wise. 32 GB of internal memory- why? I'm pretty sure I can buy a PS4 for less too.
Also I wouldn't mind paying for online if Nintendo had a level of service comparable to XBL, but it no doubt won't. Using your smartphone to chat sounds like the most clueless Nintendo-y thing ever.

It's honestly pretty impressive that they kept it so small. I'm downloading Assassin's Creed Unity as I type this, and it's 50 gb

I dunno. To me it's more a testament to the fact that the Switch will be running at much lower specs.

No Miiverse or Street Pass for Switch

The side-step is a special move for the dual-wielding that lets you dodge and focuses both guns for a couple of seconds. And it costs ink to do.
I'm flabbergasted at the prices of some of these it's ridonkulous
!
Nintendo has amazing games sure but srsly this your for games outside of Nintendo is already pretty damn amazing. I just don't know how I would justify the exorbitant price to get in on the game. I really want to though because Zelda looked mad awesome.
Xenoblade 2 is actually Xenoblade Chronicles 2 so that's also hype and Mario as well. + No doubt possible Wii U ports of stellar titles I missed out. The games are top notch. But everything to do with hardware and service seems to be seriously questionable.
My head screams so badly at me to wait it out until the second revision of the hardware(assuming the switch does well enough to deserve one) and once that hits there's probably going to be a good amount of games + the system beginning to hit it's stride like Sony is now with the PS4.
Also joycons look so tiny hope that doesn't matter for comfort.
I, uh, heard doubts that the WiiU Pro controller won't fit with the switch. Actually, I'm pretty sure it will. Thoughts?
I don't get why the pro controller is $10-$20 more than current gen controllers. For the Joycon to cost that much makes sense given the technology involved.
For me I figure the cost of accessories worry is more for parents whose kids will lose/eat the controllers. For most individual people, having two player out of the box just from a regular joycon set and having more hardcore multiplayer games encouraging each user to have their own (eg. spla2n) is a very decent proposition.
Also don't feel the pro controller is that necessary to be honest, but for people who want that I do see that cost as unreasonable.
99% sure the wii u controllers won't work, but who knows.

Good. Or should I say, Good riddance.
I mean yes for the joycons I can kind of maybe understand where the price comes from but I really take issue with that this is where they focused on and where a big part of the console's cost seems to be located at.
Like in the best case scenario the joycons are what's going to sell the system to the casual.(I don't feel that's suuuuuuuuper likely but definitely possible) In the worst case scenario you're paying premium for controller features that only Nintendo will employ and everyone just ignores or Nintendo themselves later dropping any attempts of integrating them in interesting ways.
Hope when the console hits some people more versed with the tech could estimate a cost breakdown. I'm going to be miffed if any arguably non important gimmicky part of the joycons eclipsed higher battery life in priority.

I guess the reason I dismiss it is because it's a concern that happened before but wound up not mattering to people.
When the cost of each individual wiimote was revealed, people were losing their shit about how expensive it was, and how the nunchuck was separate and extra, and how many they'd have to buy and how expensive that would be… but down the line it still worked.
With the Wii U reveal, people were losing their shit about having to buy another controller, and how they couldn't get a second screen if their original one broke or something... and that ultimately wound up being entirely a non-issue.
I think it's the same here. The Joycon is important to the system, but consider that this is one of the first times a system comes out that has two-player availability on the go without having to buy extra controllers. That already is pretty huge. Buy another set of joycon, and that's four players you can support already. For the local multiplayer crowd for Switch, you can get four people to play on your switch on release with an extra cost of $80. Other consoles, Wii included, would involve a much higher cost just to do that from the start.
Its really all about the support for the joycons to justify the price. And I dunno as someone that did not buy a WiiU confidence is low for me after seeing how they utilized that, it's biggest draw seems to be that it was a huge convenience bonus in general but few games seemed to have utilized in ways that amaze. Some parts of the joycons just seem incredibly superfluous. Like do I really need HD rumble? Do I need that sensor that they didn't even highlight in a game beyond showing it can track rock paper scissors as gestures(it's only in one joycon too per set). Also worth mentioning is that 2 sets of Joycons will not translate to 4 players for every game. Arms for example will be 2 players.
Like I think it's pretty funny and all but if stuff like this is will be the extent of justifying many of the extra sensors etc of the joycons I feel like we could have done with something cheaper.(Except in the case that those things are the things that will bring the blue ocean back, in that case yes I'll be wrong and I can see that happening even if I think it's unlikely.)
I think worth mentioning is that some regions are probably right at the high end of what can be perceived as ok pricing.
For me in Germany the Switch being 330 euros(because of tax) without a packin seems bonkers and puts it right over.
The switch right now definitely speaks more to the hardcore Nintendo fans more than anyone.
I'm actually just considering to get a WiiU super cheap if I can for Zelda that somehow seems like a better idea.

Keep in mind though, that this stuff is all tech demos. The really interesting uses and things for hardware come from devs who invest into the hardware. Few games show the capabilities? of course, they just fucking made this. Wait for people to play with it, wait for people to really use the technology. It's like how when analog came out and so many games were doing tank controls and bullshit with cameras and you had things like Ape Escape doing something completely different that worked in its own way too.
For example, we can name a million and one examples of why motion controls are terrible. But then when you look at Splatoon gyroscope controls you have a case of getting controllers to work more precisely in a shooter environment. I know not a lot of people appreciate that because not a lot of people appreciate the innovation of Splatoon, but that's still something.
For the Joycon, shit like 1 2 Switch is what you show a casual college kid to convince them to pull out this thing at a party with drunk friends. But show it to devs, and suddenly you have people comparing what the joycon has to what a lot of VR controller engineers are aiming to make literally right now.
Feedback in an input system is always a great thing. Gyroscope, proper rumble… these things help tremendously in making an experience more immersive and control systems more comfortable. Sure, as a whole people will always like the familiar and that's why if it's not like the 360 controller people lose their shit... but we cannot look at new technology and assume immediately that the old ways are best just because those ways already had the chance to define themselves.
I mean yes I don't disagree with what you're saying I'm just predisposed to not have a lot of confidence in them or anyone fulfilling the promise of the joycons after the WiiU even arguably to some extent for the Wii(and I say this as someone that absolutely adored Skyward Sword). I feel like giving an out of touch Nintendo the benefit of the doubt is not appropriate anymore.
I just see the very likely scenario that nobody outside Nintendo is going to spend extra effort in integrating a lot of the joycon technical functionality to any real effect because it's not going to make financial sense unless the Switch somehow hits it out of the park and does bonkers numbers. I think it's more likely for devs to just call the basic HD rumble API that Nintendo will give them and then call it a day while everything else will likely not be used at all.
Again many things about the Switch are potentially amazing. But after the presentation I don't feel the confidence in them bringing the Switch to that potential. Like the dream future is really stuff like they show cased, us in the west getting a taste of what gaming in Japan was/is like with people just randomly having a Switch and connecting over games with it.
I see stuff like Monster Hunter and other things being rad as hell if this takes off.
But at the same time right now I see too many "buts".
Fair enough, though my fear is more in the market. I do feel the Wii U had software that really kicked it out of the park, namely Splatoon in terms of controls and innovation, Xenoblade X in terms of making a proper open world, and things like Pikmin 3 truly justifying two screen. People just didn't pay attention to these things because most people only respond to the same old things and media as a whole wasn't paying attention to the Wii U for a lot of that.
My hope right now is that there IS media attention on the Switch. So just maybe some devs will figure to work on this, which we know supports unreal and is reportedly easier to work in, instead of investing in the other "potential" fad of the moment, VR, which is bound to be more costly.
But then ultimately we'll see what happens. It encourages me a bit to see so many journalists and devs already pre-ordering it.
No. That's stupid and impossible. The hardware will never, ever support the AAA games that release on faster hardware. For the most part the important thing is active and unique 3rd-party support as well as some fresh first-party titles.
exactly. But that doesn't stop them from wanting it.
As well as actual games you wanna play to come out a year after launch. xD
Also:
I'm patient, I can wait a year. Zelda isn't going anywhere and will probably be cheaper then.
Nintendo games rarely drop in price, especially their flagship.
Hahahahah. I predict wii u lifetime sales maybe slightly more. The switch is basically just the wii and wii u merged together. I just hope they crash and burn for good with this console and finally become solely a software developer bringing out their games on ps, xbox and pc.:ninja:
Btw, the only thing worth at launch and for a long time after that is Zelda and guess what, it still looks like a ps3/wii u title and won't run much better anyway than wii u version probably, which means just wait a couple weeks, buy the wii u version and wait till fall or longer to buy a much cheaper switch.
Cause you are basically spending 300$ to buy 1 wii u game. xD
Holy crap, we're actually getting Puyo Puyo Tetris?
http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/01/14/super-mario-odyssey-will-be-at-e3-2017
Well we got one game confirmed for E3.(unsurprisingly)
I still can't get over the Sonic 06 stuff in that game. I mean gameplay-wise it probably won't be the clusterfuck that that game was, but those NPCs are going to give me nightmares. It's made all the worse by the fact that Mario is a human, interacting with other humans who, for some reason, just have completely different anatomies?
Why didn't they just style the humans like Mario Bros or something? Or why not just use toads? Geez, I never thought Nintendo would make me want for generic toads, but they somehow made something worse.
I'm only getting hung up on this because it seems like such an easy thing not to get wrong? It seems like they're just actively undermining their own art direction, which otherwise looks pretty damn good. The still shots of Mario interaction with humans looks like some shoddy Garry's Mod nonsense.
I think the basic idea is that Mario is going to essentially be visiting alternate dimensions with his hat airship, so there's a world of food and food utensils, a world of Día de Muertos, and yes, I suppose a world of realistic people in a city founded by Donkey Kong.
Why didn't they just style the humans like Mario Bros or something? Or why not just use toads?
I thought people got tired of toads after Paper Mario and New Super Mario Bros.
-Nintendo Switch by default supports up to 2 TB of additional storage via high capacity SD cards (microSDXC), though that size isn’t available yet (you can manage with smaller ones meanwhile).
-Nintendo Switch is also able to support external hard disk drives via the USB 2.0 ports placed on the side of the console’s dock. However, this option has not yet been activated on the system: Nintendo is still considering it, mainly for mobility reasons, as if you save your games on an external USB memory drive connected to your dock, you wouldn’t be able to take them with you in handheld mode, which goes against main feature and philosophy of the new system.
Source.
I'm disappointed it's micro-SD, that's kind of annoying, but at least it will hopefully suffice. Funny that they throw the spec's maximum size out there, even though the highest realistic capacity is 128 GB. 256GB exist if you feel like paying over 100 bucks for it. 2TB won't happen for years upon years. And by then the standard might be dead.
I think it's all gonna depend on how big some of these games are gonna be. I'm keeping with Physical but I do have a large amount of e-shop credit (that I'm hoping is going to be transferrable) and can get some downloads. I don't wanna have to buy a new Micro SD card for every major game just to install the thing on. Especially if I'm going to be sinking £40-£60 per game.
Battery Life I was a bit unsure about but apparently you can use a portable battery charger (I bought one for Pokemon Go. Sneaky Nintendo I see what you did) to charge the thing so it's pretty much not an issue for me now.
One extremely smart thing Nintendo could do… that I'm not sure they'll actually do considering how smart it is, is make the carts for the games proprietary, but able to be written to exclusively by the Switch itself, and have each cart come with extra space. Like, Breath of the Wild is ~13gb. Have it be on a 32gb capacity cart. Then, if they do decide to do DLC for the game later, instead of writing the DLC to the system, write it TO the cart. Just make it readable only by the system the DLC was bought on. If Nintendo were super cool, they could have it be that when you try putting it in another system that isn't the one it was bought on, it makes you sign into an account and then you can access it, otherwise (Let's say you have it used) if you try to access the DLC on the cart without having the right sign-in details, it tells you the DLC isn't accessible without purchase and offers to let you purchase it or delete it from the cart.
They made a big deal about an app to use voice chat, make game session appointments or whatever etc. Have they clarified if those features are actually intergrated into the os of the console itself or really just an app? I wouldn't put it past nintendo to be THAT stupid.^^
Apparently there's no web browser? Booooooooo. Sometimes I don't feel like turning on my laptop.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_game_console_launch_games
Five launch games. In comparison, the Wii U had over 20. Looks like I'm waiting for Fire Emblem Warriors and/or Mario. Splatoon 2 needs more to be justified imo, and so does MK8 deluxe.
And Japan gets the sweeter end of the deal.
I guess to me, using a web browser on a console is so much more inconvenient to me than going to a computer. The typing mechanisms on consoles are horrible, unless you have a keyboard, but I don't have one of those and have never even considered.
Also I read somewhere earlier (could not retrace where I found the link to get it, sorry) that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe won't have any new tracks, so it's probably not going to convince you. I don't know what Nintendo is thinking. Mario Kart 8 is a great game and I would recommend it to those who skipped the Wii U, but for someone like me, I can't justify spending full-price for it again on the Switch with only the inclusion of Bowser Jr., Splatoon characters (I hate Splatoon's designs, I'd much rather they not be in the game, to be honest), and a batlle mode.

The switch has a multitouch screen. Typing should be rather easy if you're used to a smartphone. In theory.
Yeah, I've never used the Web browser in a console, so no big loss there.

A smartphone is still a completely different deal, because it's much smaller and allows for me to have my fingers in the position I want/need them to be. With that said, I still type WAY faster with a computer keyboard.

About the Wii U launch line up, let us remember how many of those titles were system sellers. Zelda alone being at launch is much more notable for Switch than any launch software for Wii U.
The better comparison is the Wii, which had Zelda (also on a previous console) and tech demo the game (which was actually the super popular Wii Sports). But Wii also had a bunch of other games., of which I only remember monkey ball as being good and red steel being terrible
GameXplain answered a bunch of fan asked questions regarding the switch

This hasn't been addressed at all by Nintendo. So far all the info we got is that we'll be able to make online lobbies and voice chat through a smartphone app and that's it. I really wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't do any of those things on the actual console considering this is Nintendo we're talking about.
I actually used the web browser for the Wii U since Youtube worked better on that than the Youtube app. I actually loved the little touch of being able to cover up what was on the TV in case you were watching something you didn't want your parents to see

aside from King Boo and Dry Bones, and the double-dash-style ability to hold two items, it's also got all of MK8's dlc. If you bought all that already then of course this isn't for you, but for someone who only had the base MK8, it might still be worth a buy?
and personally I use the WiiU's browser all the time, mainly for youtube or kissanime while I'm comfy lying in bed, it feels really natural and works great. I don't have a smartphone though, so maybe if I did I'd just be using that instead.
I think losing the browser's actually a big loss. I never use it on the consoles, personally, but this thing is a portable tablet as well, so not letting it access the web greatly limits its utility, since they're going to want people to carry this thing around with them wherever they go.

That's fair, and the mainstream gamer gobbles up Zelda like it was candy.
However, this just makes me more worried for Breath for the Wild. It has so much riding on its shoulders, and months of hype have been combined with "launch game for console people are iffy on". I mean, I'm a shill, and I've never not liked a Zelda game, but still.
God speed Aonuma.
