In hindsight, I feel like Aisa being "born" with Observation Haki is a bit cheap. The reason why I gloss over it and didn't post this in the critiques thread was because Haki was obviously a concept that Oda was developing and grasping the possibilities and stratifications of over the course of the series (hence why Armament Haki wasn't ever hinted until Rayleigh fought Kizaru at Sabaody). So it's completely understandable. And I don't doubt the possibility that there can be rare cases of Haki being learned at a very young age with all the different types of situations and availability for teaching that can occur throughout a world as expansive and varied as One Piece or even our world. Hence why some people capable of Conquerer's Haki in terms of their bloodline never even learn that they can harness it from not utilizing and refining their willpower to the brink like Luffy.
But… Was she really just born with it? Like, right out the placenta or in her first couple of years as a baby? If anybody has any scans or references to disprove me, feel free since it's been a long while since I've read Skypiea. When I look at all of the situations where characters show their first instance of Haki (Luffy when facing Duval's buffalo and the Gorgon Sisters, Usopp sniping Sugar, Coby at Marineford, Ace during Luffy's flashback) or can be presumed to show it off without confirmation (Zoro's internal monologue of mysteriously knowing where the falling rocks and his swords were at the end of the Mr. 1 fight), there's one notable common thread between them. They all showed during instances of intense stress felt by the wielder upon the pressure of the situation. Whether it was seeing people being massacred left and right, being pushed to the brink of death, and seeing your friends about to be incapacitated/killed, they all promoted extreme amounts of mental trauma upon the user. Which makes sense, since situations like these are where our willpower can be tested to the absolute limit and even break that line to overcome adversity. Like those real-life news stories of mothers suddenly having the strength to lift cars to save their children in a crash or people carrying others who are suffocating out of a burning building without being brought down by fatigue and suffocation. Observation and Armament Haki can be trained at differing rates among individuals due to natural talent and the preferences of the user concerning with type of Haki to train, but actually experiencing it for the first time and fully comprehending the instinctual ability is a completely different thing. Maybe there can be exceptions to the whole stress concept, but I doubt that not having some sort of unique and altered mindset makes it possible for Haki to be grasped.
But that's where Aisa's situation comes across as being weird to me. The idea of her just getting it as a baby without any sort of stimulus feels a bit cheap when I look at what all of these other characters had to go through just to even get a hint of it existing. Especially when it ties into a concept like willpower that thrives and inspires by how it can overcome the odds at even the most dire of moments in a series like this. Like I said, it doesn't bother me that much due to how Oda was developing how Haki would work and how early and minute Mantra was in the series, but it also stands out to me all the more for that reason thematically.
If there any quotes or panels anybody could post to give elaboration on any particular stimuli that Aisa might have experienced as a kid that got her to learn Observation Haki, I would much appreciate it. One theory I have might be that she learned it due to her fear of Wiper, since I remember that being an emphasized aspect of her character to the point that he made her cry as a baby if I'm remembering correctly. Maybe that triggered the stress in her to learn Haki at such a young age from how uncomfortable and intimidating it was to be around such a barbaric individual to her, especially since babies and kids can be scared a lot at that age. Or she may have learned it from the Shandians engaging in battles and dying all over the place when fighting Enel during the earlier years of his reign or the Skypieans, like what Coby went through at Marineford. Whatever the case may be, Aisa stands out to me quite a bit.
