Chapter 835: The Nation of Souls

"take souls from living thing A and put it into inanimate thing B"
What is complicated about it?
An animal isn't an inanimate thing.

Tot Land arc is quite good so far, but I hoped for a more original DF for Big Mom…
This Soul-Soul thing is too similar to Sugar's and Moriah's DF. -
It's not about that, it's more about what his personal experience was with them in his past. He could have been driven to piracy because his West Blue Kingdom got destroyed by the Vinsmokes. Could be it's because of them that his skull was fractured. Oda has been teasing some secrets with Brook ever since the Vinsmoke thing hit, Brook's got more to tell than what he's let on.
my guess is that he does not..but we can only wait and see@blackness662:

what turning people into toys has to do with the soul-soul no mi? -
Yeah, the scene where people went into that church was very cultish.
-
Not enough battling for the local, I want to watch battles only resident?
This is still basically an action sequence, so these meatheads bitching about it are strictly bitching because its not a duel, or involving Sanji/Zoro.
-
That woman on the first page getting a piece of her soul taken is the spitting image of Rebecca.
She looks more similar to Scarlet to me:ninja:
-
Ok so we have some mystery behind Brook and his past/knowledge of the Vinsmokes and he can manipulate souls(on a huge scale even) with his music and fruit. We are getting set up for some epic moments with Brook I'm sure! Hopefully we get that moment where only Brook can solve the problem and get a super shining moment.
I can totally get down with that! It's been a while since Brook has had time in the spotlight and just recently he's become one of my favorite SHs. It'll be a treat to see some Soul Solid action for sure.
Cracker Daddy. You never cease to amaze me, Ro.
-
I forgot to mention I had to wait one week and have Oda explicitly say some of those clones were Pudding because I legitimately thought they were all Nami (and even thought last week "omg, they are so similar some of these Namis almost pass as Puddings").
Take that as you want. -
Since this chapter tells us that Big Mom tries to have 2 children before she discards the father. It would explain why Pudding seems to be "good". The 3 eyed girl is most likely her sister.
-
@Fire Fist:
Either Mangastream has a bad translation, or this ex-husband was discarded because he gave Big Mom twins (presumably Chiffon and Lola)? What does she have against twins?
She probably wants more variety so having 2 twins is like wtf

"take souls from living thing A and put it into inanimate thing B"
What is complicated about it?
First off, it's not just inanimate objects. It can also be animals, such as rabbits and crocodiles…but not minks or humans....and neither corpses. (Why can't you transfer a soul into a corpse? Why can you transfer a soul into an animal, but not a human? Is the implication here that animals don't have souls?)
In addition, the fruit allows the user to create these "incarnations", these little separate ghost creatures who go around collecting the souls.
But you can also decide on how much of someone's soul you can take. By the way, a person's soul is connected to their lifespan.
(Then there's whole "leave or life" rule, which seems completely arbitrary...but that's a different topic.)
Compare all this to...Buggy's fruit, Senior Pink's, or pretty much every logia or zoan fruit. Basic concepts that don't require a whole chapter's worth of info dump. (actually, that last part wasn't true. the soul-soul fruit's intro was shared with the mirror fruit, which certainly didn't help make things clearer.)
-
I kinda worried about Chopper. Those woods aren't safe for being unable to move for 6 hours.
And did Big Mom really buried him? I thought he was down there because he liked.

The general idea is still just soul manipulation. Stuff like splitting your soul into little soul ghosts that can collect other souls as well is just a creative application that easily works as a subset of "soul manipulation". It's pretty much a literal deconstruction of the ability.
The only complicated thing is the "animals having no soul" bit, but that's not an uncommon interpretation. In fact, this was once a common belief.
-
Penguins, a polar bear with a crown, Straw Hats getting brain freezes from ice cream, sweet colour spread.
I found the "leave or life" custom funny since it equates paying taxes with sacrificing a part of yourself to faceless blob monsters.
Brûlée & Big Mom's powers are going to be lots of fun. I like how Brûlée gleefully shatters the idea that Luffy & company could just sneak in undetected. Big Mom's awareness of what's going on in her domain reminds me of Enel but stranger and creepier.
"Homie" as a term for something possessed by a spirit is really cool.
I feel very silly for never considering the possibility of the guy stuck in the ground to be a husband of Big Mom. Seems so obvious now.
Oh, and Carrot continues to be surprisingly spunky. So eager to defend people she barely knows. lol
-
Yeah, every chapter of this arc just makes Tottoland even more creepier. And this just signifies that it's a Crapsaccharine World.

-
I knew this was never gonna be a stealth mission, not to mention BM's homies (cool name), her creations, were eyeing the SHs the whole time. The thought of "stealth" went down in flames the moment they sailed over her waters.
-
Great chapter! Can't wait to see more of Nami's new clima-tact.
And given Big Mom's powers, I hope Brook's ability will play a big part this arc.I wonder if the citizens have to spin another kind of wheel when they choose 'Leave' instead of 'Life'.
-

This is a case of Big Brother is watching.
-
love how Nami takes out the climatact out of her boobs lmao
! no wonder it got bigger:ninja:
-
Pretty nice chapter, nothing to comment about, gladly it contained revelations that needed to be addressed sooner or later. Can't wait for whatever is going to happen next chapter.
-
-
I wonder if that church is where the wedding is to be held? With the seats roped off with the flowers and ribbons like that gives me the idea that those are decorations for wedding.
-
Nami breaking herself free with her new baton was pretty cool. Seeing her get physical, especially with acrobatics is always a treat. Very happy Carrot or Chopper didn't break her free. I hope she gets her remote controlled lightning and burns that forest to the ground.
-
There goes that visual cue again that a character has noticed something suddenly. That "click" looks to be coming from Nami. Maybe a hint that her Color of Observation is developing? The way she can inherently sense weather within nature seems to be a good fit for CoO.
-
Visually I think Brulee's mirror ability is fantastic. I was worried she would just stick out her hands like any traditional barrier/window maker and just have a mirror appear.
-
I love how those smug aspirin trees are ready to man handle Chopper until they see his Monster form. Chopper getting praise from Brûlée and daddy Cracker is nice as well.
-
There are clocks drawn on the trees. What if all these weird clocks we've seen everywhere are to point out when that months worth of time is running out. Therefore new souls would need to be sprinkled on to keep what ever it is alive.
-
It does seem sudden that we got an explanation on Big Mom's abilities this early. I'm happy because it probably means that this won't be a 2 year long mega arc and the story will speed along quicker than usual. Not sure I like that the souls can settle into animals but at the very least the Croc and Rabbit are explained. Still is it the soul that allowed the Rabbit to get to a position that looks like he could be one of Big Mom's commanders?
-
So those black blobs are physical manifestations of Big Mom's very own soul. Ok so we have some mystery behind Brook and his past/knowledge of the Vinsmokes and he can manipulate souls(on a huge scale even) with his music and fruit. -
Poor Cracker Daddy, no one cares about him. Don't worry the Straw Hats will find value in you.
-
Great to get the Lola ball rolling with Nami again.
-
3 Sweet Commanders! I wonder if this is the equivalent to Kaidou's top 3 guys or White Beard's Marco, Ace and Jozu? I would have to assume Bobbin would be another and potentially Tomago.
.
Good chapter I enjoyed it
Just to be clear, Cracker is the name of the 10th son, not the name of Chiffon and Lola's father.
Also, since Lola's confirmed to be part of Linlin's family now, does that mean her name is just a nickname, or just a shortened version of a food or cooking-related name?
-

Ive heard its a play on lollipop

See, Perospero's theme seems to be based on lollipops, and I like to think Oda wants to keep each individual Charlotte member's name from overlapping.

Victoria Secret Compartment for the win, and nice going for Nami for not being the damsel in distress this time. And I wonder what is going to happen with Carrot, because I know they are going to show her no mercy.
-
Well i’m a bit disappointed Nami and Chopper couldn’t do more against Brulee but i guess it is to soon for confrontation. I still hope’it is just posponed.
Also Lola’s mum is finally revealed. But we still have no idea what will be the consequences. As I have said she is shown as a daughter who flew away. At least it should definitely put their father on the Strawhat side. Also now they know how to locate Big Mum easily.
-

Right. He wasn't given a name and Lola Daddy and Cracker's Daddy didn't really roll of the tongue.
-
Where did Nami pull all these move from ? First with how she handled Wanda, and now this. And seeing her body could handle doing stuff like blue walk without problem, look like she got stronger than expected during these 2 years. I really look forward to her going all out, please don't disappoint Oda !
-
Why do I have a feeling they are going to have to fight Cracker in order to save Lola's dad, because he seems he would be crucial to helping them?
-
As soon as that guy revealed he was one of Big Mom's husbands, I knew he was Lola/Chiffon's father.
Now what I really wonder is how Nami's knowledge of Lola being Big Mom's daughter will bring the story. Lola gave Nami Big Mom's vivre card to get help from her if they need it.

Maybe nami is like those girls who hate gym class but when they have to can really move
-
Haha people seem kind of irritated that Oda would insinuate that animals don't have souls and I'm over here like, man souls aren't even real. Who cares? I for one am satisfied that Moria and Sugar's powers don't overlap too much with Big Mom's.
Also, I swear to god if another person has the same "epiphany" about Brook and Big Mom - WE GET IT ALREADY.
It's super obvious. And in an effort to not win "grumpiest 2016", it was great seeing Nami and Chopper spring to action and even better to see Carrot continue to be a badass. I'm getting my hurt a little too set on her becoming nakama. I don't wanna get my heart broken though.
Luffy saying "oh you guys weren't just multiplying for fun?" was soooo classic. I love my Luffy-boy. And I love everything Big Mom related so far. Big Mom for best o.g. Yonkou.
-
Just confirming, no Jump next week, right?
-
Right. He wasn't given a name and Lola Daddy and Cracker's Daddy didn't really roll of the tongue.
He's not Cracker's dad. He's Lola and Chiffon's.

I was also disappointed but I'm expecting some stuff from Nami especially since she keeps boosting that she's not weak. Lola's return would be good too.
-
You've got a point there. Hmmm, but maybe she hides the connection by having another name. I mean she has the BM hair and lips like Lola u know
I see what you're saying. Big Mom and Big Eater are more than likely related. Their relation might be why Bonney is free after being captured by Akainu.
-
I love this cover page. The colors chosen are perfect.
Sanji should obviously play where Zoro is playing.too soft on the right, in a match with bb kuzan should ice them easily
-
-
mangastream translator must have known the word inkling last weeks, in two chapters used it 3 times
-
He's not Cracker's dad. He's Lola and Chiffon's.
Oh yeah you're right. Could have sworn he was.
-
@Heavenly:
THANK GODA HES OKAY!!!
-
So Carrot has two claw weapons now? So why did she only have one claw weapon on Zou?
!
Also where the hell did she pull those claws from? Carrot doesn't have enough cleavage to hide her weapons like Nami. -
Very good chapter, brulee looks like she is no joke and now the amount of people needed to be saved in this arc has increased to 3. More explanation on big mom's power although a lot of people already had an idea of it and we learn that goofy looking dude is lola's dad. Wasnt expecting that at all
-
-
What?!?! Lola is Big Mom's daughter???!
O.O
-
I like this theory! Although, I suspect it might also go the other way – Brook could be an infinite well of Souls (he is the Soul King, afterall), making Big Mom want to capture and keep him as an endless source.
While I read through this, something came to mind. What if…. (and I'm just throwing this out there, no theory, just speculation or dumb theory w.e.)
... in the end BM sees the diversity and ties within Luffy and his crew, maybe perhaps while fighting Luffy and seeing his conviction, ambition for PK! Then realizing that part of her dream to have a world of freedom for ALL races, can be accomplished through helping Luffy becoming the PK.
Or then again like I mentioned.. just something that came to mind and wanted to write it down.. .. sorry for taking ya'll time lol
-
Well it seems like the right time for a nice little open discussion about Big Mom's powers.
What's Big Mom's power? Life force gets taken/moved… though if I'm not mistaken, from what we've seen so far, it has to be from submitting (including scared) individuals.
If so-- that is, if the victim has to give in, in some fashion-- is this useful against someone like Luffy? Probably not.
Is Big Mom a threat in any other way, on her own, to someone like Luffy? Probably not (much).
I think Big Mom's power comes from her actually being a Big Mom, that is– the size of her family and the amount of people supporting her. Brulee alone has quite the bit of beastly potential. Even weaker underlings are sneaky and well-informed; and they can be used in Big Mom's strategies for sneaky tricks like taking hostages too.
Throwing Brooke into this whirlwind of words here-- him possibly not being affected by the soul thing doesn't mean much, eh? Discounting any other dirty tricks that may be used, his skeletal body's still vulnerable to any one of the family that decides to smash it while he's outside of it, or anyone who can while he's still in it. That being said, it is still likely his power will be included as a plot device at some point due to the "so-obvious-it's-hard-to-avoid-it" reasoning, same as if someone like Perona happened to be there. -

It is indeed true that Brook stands absolutely no chance against Big Mom's strength regardless of whether or not his Devil Fruit makes him immune to Big Mom's lifespan-stealing powers. At most, it'll be played up a gag or two. But what is interesting is the versatility of Brook's Devil Fruit allowing him to manipulate souls by playing music effects that induce hallucinations and fatigue that causes sleep.
!
!Given how Brook's Devil Fruit powers are loosely defined to fit pretty much anything related to lore about the afterlife, I can see Oda writing Brook's music incantations to be capable of manipulating those incarnations of Big Mom's soul, the soul pieces of Totland's citizens, and maybe even the inanimate objects and animals that were given souls. It might even be through this method that all of the years that the Totlanders have given can be returned back to them by the end of the arc once Luffy and Big Mom start directly butting heads (although there is little-to-no chance that Big Mom is getting taken down this arc). I doubt that Oda decided to specifically leave Nami (who's friends with Lola and was given Big Mom's Vivre Card), Chopper (who loves candy and is exactly the type of unique creature that Big Mom would want to recruit, as well as being a doctor that could play a role in alleviating Big Mom's mysterious illness), and Brook (who is definitively linked to souls and death) on a complete whim, not to mention Sanji and Caesar's obvious correlations with the themes and plot lines in this arc.

A song or something by The Soul King righting all the wrongs done with souls at the end of this arc actually would be a really cool ending or important scene (and potentially epic within the anime). Shame if all the "homies" go back to normal, but he could use it to simply undo other wrongs Big Mom might've done to the crew by then or something.
